My wife set up half of our basement as a bike workshop for me – Christmas gift.
It's a great place to build/tinker/etc. She had GarageTek storage wall cover
installed on three full walls, which supports all kinds of modular storage
pieces. I use a variety of their storage units, but the most useful are shelf
brackets/shelves, on which I place Rubbermaid plastic storage containers in
several sizes. The shop also has modular grease-resistant and slightly padded
floor "tiles" installed. Bought at BJ's, I think, and cut with a knife to fit
at the edges. I love this flooring – if an area gets damaged, you just pull up
that 16 or 18 inch square piece and install a new one, which costs a couple of
bucks (I have an extra half dozen pieces squirreled away) and takes about 30
seconds.

She also ceded to me a bar with stools and a wash-up sink, where I clean old
parts and build wheels. There's even a bathroom down there!

Here's a pic that shows two sides of the shop, one where I have GarageTek bike
holder brackets and long holders on which I store tires and fenders, and the
other (the back wall) which has GarageTek small piece bins, in which I store
various size bolts, nuts, washers, fender and other hardware, etc. You can
sort of see how the storage units slot into the GarageTek modular wall
covering. Very flexible – I like it a lot:

And here's a pic that shows the third wall, where the shelf units are installed
with the plastic Rubbermaid containers, in which I keep by category all sorts
of parts and accessories:

That latter pic shows the line of demarcation between my half of the basement
and my wife's half – there's a pretty stark difference in the degree of clutter
(or chaos, depending on your point of view) between the two.

This final pic shows the difference, as well as the parts-cleaning and
wheelbuilding bar (you can see the Park wheelbuilding stand on the bar in the
right background), and my freestanding wooden bench (with two vices), which is
a really useful place to work:

I feel lucky every day to have such a nice shop.

Subject: [RBW] Show me your Garage/Workshop/Cave/Storage Spaces

for the first time in my life, i am moving to a place with a garage. 1.5ish car
size, stand alone, all wood. i have been gifted the use of it by my spouse, who
just asks that we keep camping stuff and luggage up in the rafters. im very
excited, but also in need of some ideas and inspiration for how to make the
space great. I figured that there must be some crossover of people who
appreciate rivendells and people who appreciate a nicely designed and set up
workshop.

it'll house 4-5 bikes and i want to set up part of the space for working on
them. but also have an area for sitting with music, maybe a mini fridge, and a
general making/tinkering area minus any large power tools.

i'd like to see pictures of your space first and foremost, but im also
interested in...

-small space problem solving storage things
-bike storage techniques and specific brand recommendations
-general style points or clever add ons
-workbenches
-links to sites highlighting this sort of thing
-other stuff im forgetting.

in the past, all of the things that would fall into this category have been
housed in bedrooms, closets, porches and cardboard boxes, so im flying blind.
