If anyone out there is contemplating an Atlantis, this one's nicely spec'd out and priced right. The 58 cm size must be really wrong for the seller to give up after only 200 miles but stuff happens. No. If you access this group via email, it would seem to be a simple thing to delete a Subject line to start a new thread. However, it does not start a new thread thread on the web interface, so what may have been a good-intentioned act to start a new thread may not appear that way to those accessing via the web. I'm inclined to give Bruce the benefit of the doubt. There have been a few discussions of non-Riv models recently, which I think is not particularly helpful to the specificity of this list. Bruce's post was clearly labeled, and I find it to be the equivilent of anyone posting a non-Riv product to the list. Honestly, given his position in terms of active frame builders who were doing it before a good many of us were born (or at least actively cycling), I have a hard time coming down on him posting - my personal opinion is that I would like to see him be financially successful as a framebuilder. He's earned that in my book. On the other hand, this list is about Rivendell products, and I think a number of us are guilty of diverging from that, particularly in the last month or two. Patrick ear wide open (and what an image that is) to learn of a road bike that will take 65 mm tires plus fenders Moore Definitely will! I have the Bruce made version - the Rock 'n Road. Bruce actually understates tire and fender clearance. I am currently set up with Schwalbe Supremes 700x40 with SKS fenders. There is a lot of space between the tire and fender - Big Apples will fit easy. The thing I like the best about my R'nR is how over built everything is. Heavy tubing. Rugged chain stays. Extra thick powder coat. Even the threads for the rack and bottle cage mounts are thick and precise. Nevertheless, the bike has a nice and - for a tour bike - lively ride. Arguably not as pretty as the Atlantis. But who wants to worry about the occasional scratch or knick while on tour? I already had a full set of Tubus racks, so I did not go with the BG set. I prefer the design of the BG front low rider to the Tubus Tara. The BLTs seem to be a real deal - nice looking frames and racks fro a very good price. [RBW] Re: Atlantis on the Great Divide Route?
When I rode the Great Divide, there were stretches when I was riding with people on full suspension rigs and bob trailers, and they had to limit their speed on descents, otherwise their trailers would fishtail and become unstable. I used front and rear panniers, and the bike was solid, even reaching a top speed of 49mph on dirt. I think the Atlantis would be a great bike for the ride, the bombadil that I rode has the same tire clearances, but I would recommend using at least a 50mm tire to make your life on the washboards easier. Using Marathon extremes on my Surly Big Dummy (another worthy GD bike!), but they aren't available in a 700x50mm yet. If they were, they would probably be half a pound lighter than XRs, but just as puncture resistant. I could have turned around and ridden the GD again with the same set of tires if I wanted, they are overbuilt! The carousel bags seem really cool, if you have the ultralight gear thing down and are willing to forgo most luxury items. I have spent the past several days reading through the journals of others who have ridden the route, and the over-whelming bike of choice is a hard-tail mtb with suspension forks. What is max tire width I can use on my Atlantis? The RBW site no longer spec's that, just a recommended minimum. By the way, I realize that a Bombadil would fit the bill nicely.
