[RBW] Re: Used Bike Pricing - General - Mindless.. Dribble
I feel your pain. Buying is easy, selling sucks. I have a Dave Kirk Terraplane, Joe Bell paint. An incredibly fine bike outfitted with Campy Centaur alloy and a nice Campy wheelset. The last time I checked, the frameset alone is 3800. It's not really an outlier size (59/58.5) and I can't get close to the less than 3k I was asking. I would rather stare at it sitting in my office than sell for less than that... ~50% of cost. On Friday, September 6, 2013 1:08:34 PM UTC-4, Kelly wrote: So this is subjective and my opinion and thoughts. or questioning thoughts... I recently attempted half heartedly to sell a couple of bikes. Only posted here and being 68cm I figured that since I was asking a fair to me but not great deal on price it was a long shot on selling. Then I see a 68cm Orange RAM sell for 1300 or so bucks complete. My thought was this guy is nuts... he should get that for frame alone. Then thought.. jerk makes it harder to sell mine.. :)Anyway the way I have purchased and looked at things are savings and value to me. So if I get a frame and repaint it with total cost being roughly half of new then I have essentially a new frame at 1/2 price. I tend to add 500 to the cost of used frame in my mine for the repaint then take half of new and go from there. shrug. The build or builds I do usually range in the 1500 to 2000 on top of the cost of the frame. Sometimes less sometimes more.. (like why my RAM will never sell) I also look at the 68cm frames as being rather special and worth more than say a 56 cm or other common frame that fits 80% of the people in the world. So tall people unless you want a got no reason song song written after you quit giving bikes away. Note to person selling me the 68cm Atlantis .. disregard as this will be a good feeling sell and giving away is OK this time only. (if only he was giving it away) Anyway I would usually just buy new if savings aren't that great, but since 68cm frames are far and few between one must get what they can. Which seems to be my mistaken belief. That because they are rare, no longer made, no other alternatives that offer the same benefits unlike smaller frames... surly for example... that tall folks would covet and jump at an opportunity to grab them up. Back to me buying an Atlantis I don't really need since I didn't sell any of my other bikes. Does it really fit, I've convinced my self that my perfect number of bikes is 3. (4 if you add in a unicycle or is that 3.5) Tour Bike = Bombadil - Albatross - SON28 New Dyno on front - Phil on back - Velocity Atlas Rims 2mm straight gage spokes. Event Bike = RAM - 48cm Noodles, SONdelux Dyno on front -Grand Bois HIgh Flange Rear on Velo Orange Raid Rims with 1.8 / 1.5 double butted - Rene Herse front crank triple.. sweet for me.. only bitch.. I miss my kickstand. Day Bike = AHH(difference in the day bike and event bike is bigger tires, fenders, racks and room for large saddle sack and camera equipment... not to mention kickstand. Ideally replace this with the Atlantis. Built up with New SON28 and White Industries rear with Velo Orange Raid Rims. Lots of love for this bike.. been a go to for a long time. Century rides etc. None of my bikes have taken on as many roles as the AHH! I've toured with it. Built it as my event bike and now have it as my semi tour day bike for photography. The 700x37 Panaracer tires are really comfy. Just is always right there to fill in for any role I choose to set it up as. So the Atlantis really isn't needed.. it's wanted for bigger tires the AHH just can't fit.But since no one will buy what I have .. I need a role for the Atlantis. If it carries the load as well as the Bombadil I would add my bombadil to the sell list to get back to 3 bikes. Some combination to fit the Tour / Event / Day Bike (go to bike so to speak) My quickbeam rides alike a charm. I just don't ride it enough. I like to ride my bikes not look at them or work on them all the time. They get dirty and paint gets scratched. (thank god for ease or repainting) So if I keep 5 bikes I need a unique role for each so they get ridden or sell 2. Quickbeam of course. However I am not will to give them away.. (make sense?) (answer: not much of this post makes sense - drink or smoke something and try again) Just thinking the Panracer 700x37 feel doggie and thinking about going back to JB's ... may have to use it for a 60 miler on Saturday and see if it's me or if they are just really comfy and smooth thus feel slow or if they are really slow.. I'll find out while chasing friends. The large saddlesack is such a dream bag. Though I have a Luxos B - I like my edelux just because it completely turns off when not in use.

[RBW] 14 Sep - DC Area Atlantis Ride
We talked about it a couple weeks ago, hopefully it still works for a casual meet up and ride! Here is what I'm thinking but I'm open to suggestions, Date: Saturday, 14 Sep Time: 0900 meet up Place: Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navy_%E2%80%93_Merchant_Marine_Memorial) Route: 'Arlington Loop, clockwise' (Google map to come tonight, but basically it's the MV-4 mile run-WOD-Custis-MV) Long range weather: 72 deg, partly cloudy Maybe we grab lunch and some college football afterwards! Oh and it's not an Atlantis exclusive event... That was just the start of the discussion as I was looking for a smaller Atlantis to try out. Let me know if you want suggestions for car parking or directions to the memorial. Hope to see you Saturday! [RBW] Re: Talk about the rules
I live in the hill country north of San Antonio. Standard ride from my house is down to the creek bottom, follow the creek road, then climb to the next neighborhood park - it's a 20-mi round trip (ends in a grueling climb for me). People haul their bikes from San Antonio to ride it - the parking lot in the park fills up and people also park in downtown Bulverde and make the ride. It's also worked into a lot of club rides. But every time I ride it, I see a quorum of cyclists. Today I took notes. Most people were on late model aluminum frame road bikes. Saw a couple of other steel road frames, and a couple of uprights. But the togs were split about half-and-half between lycra and baggy nylon. So there may be hope... [RBW] Ride/Camp Report: Carbon River Valley, Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park, 29-31 August 2013
Hello folks! Right before Labor Day holiday weekend, my friend Ed and I took Amtrak from Portland to Tacoma, and then rode 50 miles to Ipsut Creek campground on the Carbon River, in the NW corner of Rainier NP. To get to Ipsut Creek, one must access a pretty rough five mile road that's closed to car traffic. Despite crappy weather at the outset and bike breakage at the end, it was a good time. That has to be one of the nicest bikes ever posted here. I will be interested to read your review in a month or so to tell us what kind of commuter it is. I am flat bar guy and I love White Industries cranks so you hit the sweet spot for me. What size of tire did you get they look like Schwalbe Marathon 35's? If by chance I ever see you on the road, I would love to try out your bike, if you were to permit it. It's not like us Toronto people ever get to test drive Rivendell's and if I remember correctly your bike is a 55 which is what I ride. Thanks for the compliments, I'll be certain to post impressions after about a month, first 20km ride today was nice, I've always regretted selling my simpleone, this is a quicker and lighter version of that. Not yet sold on the flat bars, they look great and for rides up to 20km work well, not sure how the hands would feel on longer ridee. If I run into you, you're welcome to take it for a test ride, I live in the Beach area and mostly ride along the lakeshore bike paths between Scarborough and Etobicoke. [RBW] Re: Talk about the rules
Tongue in cheek humor or otherwise, some of these rules could be taken seriously. #77 is one of them. Now, I have don't necessarily have anything against discarding the peelings or cores of eaten fruit along a ride, because they are biodegradable. But do they have to be just dropped right in the middle of the road or trail?? I used to always be able to tell where the racing types took their training rides out in the county because I came across their banana peels in the middle of the road. Was it too difficult to at least flip it over to the ditch where it's not so unsightly? I figure it's either because 1) they never learned to ride without hands on the bars and couldn't manage to sit up and toss it, 2) they dropped it there on purpose to let YOU know that THEY had come this way, or 3) I'm, like, dropping this wherever I feel like and it's in your face if you don't like it, dude! Hmmm...sounds like an additional rule or two might be in order. On Wednesday, September 4, 2013 10:55:28 PM UTC-5, Manuel Acosta wrote: By far one of my favorite bike blogs to read. Looks like a fun trip even with the rain and broken bike. The rSogn was never intended to be a touring bike BTW. Skinny tubes and lighter weight tubing. OK with a light front load but not really designed for that use. Even the larger sizes have tubing lighter than a Hilsen for example. [RBW] + 1 more for Stan's and the F Freds
I don't want to make myself a bore on the subject, but the combination is, to my mind, as big a benefit to all rounder -- ie combination dirt/pavement -- cycling as clipless pedals and modern dynamo lighting to the sport generally. More miles on the Fargo this morning, half dirt. I came across a cyclist flicking the goatheads from her tires, stopped to offer help and was told that the tires had sealant. So the goatheads are thick and nasty. But no flats at all. ~ 40 miles so far of local bosque dirt (plus more pavement) and, not only no flats, no need to add air. I can tell I've lost a bit of pressure as air escapes while the sealant does its job, but just barely enough to notice when I squeeze the tires. And this with wonderfully fast pavement rolling. I do notice the usual wind resistance when riding into a stiff headwind, compared to, say, 35 mm Kojaks -- all 2+ tires that measure ~29 are like sails compared to skinnier or shorter tires, at least IME. But that aside, the Freds roll wonderfully on pavement and firm dirt or gravel, and do well enough in sand that I don't miss wider, softer tires too much in sandy areas. -- *RESUMES THAT GET YOU NOTICED!* Certified Resume Writer http://resumespecialties.com/index.html patrickmo...@resumespecialties.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/patrickmooreresumespec/ Albuquerque, NM -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqa with Albastaches
Yes - I went from an older MTB stem (early 90s) with 13cm length on a ~25 degree rise to a 10cm Nitto Dirt Drop stem. It's a similar height at the wide, flat grips, and the front bends are in approximately the same place. I'm sure it's different by a few millimeters, but I wanted to get the front of the bars to a similar point from the seat. Re: [RBW] Roadeo as Commuter
I wholeheartedly recommend using your best bike to commute with and to run errands with. I commuted for several years 15 miles across town on a custom Riv that I had a local builder fixify. I had the bike built in '03 as a derailleur gofast to match the '99 Joe-built custom fixed gofast but found it was simply hanging and gathering dust. It easily accepts 32s and fenders and with rack and panniers or a large saddlebag it handles medium (it is happy up to, say, 30 lb in the rear; it doesn't like much more than 5 in the front, so I don't bother with front loads) loads happily. I have no regrets in turning a custom into an errand bike and, now that i work at home, it is still my most ridden bike (though the Fargo with new tires may take the lead). If a significant part of your riding is utility riding, as mine is, then IMO you should use the best bike you can afford, and that you can keep secure, to do it with. I love the gofast (a hair over 17 lb) but the errand Riv which apart from useful additions like lighting and baggage is near-identical gets many more miles. (The errand Riv weighs only 23 1/5 lb with lighting, rack, bell, cages, and fenders but before any bags or bottles -- ie built but not loaded. 17/19 t Dingle in rear, 48 in front, 32mm/25 actual 559 bsd Kojaks. A ride in the classic Riv style, showing off the best the Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond hills have to offer. My thought is that we could congregate at a local coffee joint, the Fellini Coffeebar (attached to a restaurant called Pizza Moda), on the corner of University Avenue and Acton St. around 9:00am for coffee and pastries. Fellini is three blocks south of the North Berkeley BART station, and there is ample free parking in the surrounding neighborhood for those that have to drive. Around 9:30 or so we'll swing by the BART station to pick up any latecomers before heading for the hills. My idea for the route is start in the south, heading up the classic East Bay road climb of Tunnel Rd. A good warm-up and great views of the whole Bay Area. From the top of Tunnel we'll hit up the trails in Sibley Volcano park, descending down to the bottom of Fish Ranch Rd. From there, it's more road climbing on Fish Ranch and Grizzly Peak Blvd. to the summit of Grizzly Peak (great views of Mt. Diablo!) and the upper reaches of Tilden Park, before descending on trail down to the aptly named Inspiration Point on Wildcat Canyon Rd. From there it's more trails down through Wildcat Canyon, heading north. Depending on the time and how punchy we're feeling we'll loop back by climbing up to the paved Nimitz Way Trail, which returns us to Inspiration Point, and then back to Berkeley via Wildcat Canyon Rd. and Spruce St. If people are interested there are tons of great options around Berkeley for post-ride refreshment. Truth be told, I haven't taken the time to map this out or calculate mileage or elevation change. The route is probably short on mileage (maybe 30 or 40 something ?) but big on climbing (at least 2000'?), with most of the climbing happening in the first half of the ride. Definitely bring food. Luckily, there are many places along the route to refill on water. There are also many easy spots to bail back to Berkeley or Oakland if you need to cut it short for whatever reason. The route is totally doable on any number of Riv-ish all-rounders. Definitely bring something with low gears for climbing. The off-road portions are mostly fire trail, but can be quite steep and washboarded, so wider tires are definitely recommend. I'll be doing it on my Long Haul Trucker with Alba bars and 700x42 file treads. Please let me know if you're planning to come along so I have a sense of how many to expect and who too look for. -Jeremy Till Berkeley, CA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Roadeo as Commuter
I wholeheartedly recommend using your best bike to commute with and to run errands with. Definitely. For the most of us it is the bike we that gets the most mileage. Make those miles count. Love the Rodeo as a flat bar single speed. Looks great. On Sunday, September 8, 2013 4:06:34 PM UTC-5, Patrick Moore wrote: I wholeheartedly recommend using your best bike to commute with and to run errands with. [RBW] Re: Who's drinking the Kool Aid?
I have drunk the Kool Aid and I'm proud of it. My Atlantis is the perfect road bike for me, a sixty plus trundler of a cyclist who enjoys riding and couldn't give a hot buttered stuff for racing. My other bikes are a Specialized Shark beach cruiser which is essential as I live on a beach in Australia and a Birdy folding bike for which I'm waiting delivery. The Shark has a Brooks B68, King Cage and a Carradice and I'm planning a whole lot of other Rivendell bling for it and the Birdy. Wollongong is a rust belt city by the sea that used to be a steel town and is fast becoming a University town. We have a wide range of cycle styles meeting down by the beach for an espresso. However, the serious lycra set meet at Diggies café and the rest of us meet at the North Beach Kiosk. Both cafes are part of the same building and run by the same management but serious lycra does not speak to the Others. That is their problem and their Kool Aid, I would include the rather earthy Australian retort for these people but it would probably grossly offend a lot of innocent people. It has something to do with inserting their bicycle pump in the most inappropriate part of their anatomy for reasons of self gratification. But you must realise that Australians have always been rather blunt and to the point. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Who's drinking the Kool Aid?
It took George's note from Australia to motivate me to respond. Aside from the bicycle pump, Wollongong and Indianapolis sound similar, even down to a bit of rust belt heritage. As I read the earlier responses I kept thinking that I have never had anything but compliments about my Hungapillar, but then I think the only riders that might want to disparage the bike, seem to ride on Tuesday and Thursday nights - and then only as a group off to themselves, whereas I am a commuter and not a pack animal...If I were an ethnosociologist I might find all this really interesting.
