[RBW] Re: Rack Mounting Question
I was looking at some photos of the installed XC cantis, and they are definitely made for a short saddle cable. It looks like, though, if you extend the pad position toward the max, you can use a bit longer straddle cable and still have good braking load. [RBW] Re: Rack Mounting Question
As others have eluded to, the M12 canti-stud mounting method is not a plug-n-play with Suntour XC Pro cantilever brakes. The issue here is that the brake mounting bolt is recessed, while the M12 requires a flat platform to attach to. So you can try any brake that does not use recessed mounting bolt, or use a spacer to take up the space of the mounting bolt head. I've successfully completed two installations of this type: 1. https://flic.kr/p/iPMjx9 2. https://flic.kr/p/ihitRG You'll need a M6 spacer of enough height to make up the brake's recessed space, plus an extra millimeter for clearance. Then you can use a long M6 bolt to bolt all of that down. I ended up with a M6x35mm but YMMV. One complication is that the M6 spacer's outer diameter should be narrow enough to fit inside the brake's recessed space. Most proper M6 spacers have an outer diameter of 13mm whereas I found that I needed 10mm outer diameter M6 spacers. Essentially, I was looking more for a sleeve than a spacer. These can be hard to find but they are available on eBay. For example: http://r.ebay.com/4BrnOh (no affiliation). The Paul Component also offer a rack adaptor kit that is essentially like the Nitto adaptor but with a built-in spacer. It's a bit pricey and I have no idea how tall its spacer is. It is designed expressly for their cantilever brakes that use recessed mounting bolts. Re: [RBW] From Noodles to Albatross ~ Stem length?
For me (YMMV) the length between drops and Albas didn't change. What did change was height. I went from a 100mm Tech Dlx stem at seat height to a plain Technomic to get the added height above the seat. Cheers, David it isn't a contest. I don't have a lot of miles on her yet, but I have been amazed so far at the fit, the ride, the whole package. She was only born a week ago, but in that short time has been ridden unloaded around town, loaded on the trail, and commuting to work. All great experiences. And talk about experiences. I went to RBW HQ to pick her up as I have family in the area. The care that Brian put into installing accessories that weren't even purchased from Riv was above and beyond. Mark plied me with so many espressos I could have ridden a century that afternoon. And I was there as the custom was being built up and got to see it and meet Liesl. Yes, the people on this list are real! Both her bike and mine are beautiful in their own ways. The paint on the custom has to be seen to be appreciated -- it is really stunning. From Walnut Creek, it was back to Portland on Amtrak and then after only a few short days with my new bike, I delivered her to Amtrak again for the trip to Florida, where she will get to fulfill her true destiny as a loaded tourer. [RBW] Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue
I’ve been a Rivendell member since 1997. I’ve outfitted my bikes in Rivendell-inspired ways with many Riv-bought parts, and during the time that Rivendell frames only came out at a trickle and there was a year long waiting list for the Longlow I wanted in 1999, I even used Riv specs as possible on my Mercians. But I’ve never actually had a Rivendell frame until now. On Friday I took out for a first ride the Sam Hillborne 62cm in Sage Green that I picked up recently. I built it up with parts on hand as possible, and it came out as Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue. Something Old The first talk I had with Grant in 1997 was about how I just couldn’t relate to index shifting and 8 speeds – and I was indignant that there was 9 and rumors of 10 speeds about to further complicate my life. He suggested a Phil 7 speed, 135 oln hub for the bike I had then. I’ve built that hub as both a 26” and 700c wheel for a few different bikes over the years. It still rolls very smoothly and, a new 13-28 freewheel cluster, I’m glad to bring that first bond with Rivendell on board this bike. Something New I’ve been told that derailers have improved in the last twenty years, so have current models of Deore rear and CX-70 front derailers. Sam also has the long reach Tektro calipers that made him possible as a non-cantilever bike (not that I wouldn’t have preferred him as a cantilever…). I also am so far liking the new Barlow tires. Something Borrowed I had intended and still may someday use a Sugino AT crank I had squirreled away, but it turns out a 107mm bottom bracket comes with the Hillborne. In order to streamline things and utilize this bottom bracket already in there, I borrowed an old Ritchey Logic crank from the Vigorelli , and cleaned up 46 and 34 tooth rings for it. Fits perfectly! And will probably stay until I need some lower gears for a camping trip. Almost Blue Yep, it’s just got a nice ring in it to say almost blue. Also, the color seems equally greenish-blue as bluish-green to me. I’ll call it Almost Blue. I’ve always liked Moustache Bars and wanted to start off this bike with this maligned and recently abandoned bar. I’ve found over the years that when I’m tinkering with bikes, they tend to shed barends, noodles, and especially albatrosses, in favor of Moustache Bars and DT shifters. Unfortunately, Sam doesn’t support downtubers, so we’ll see how that works out. First ride was 15 miles of positive. I need the bars a little higher/closer than the stem on hand allows, and I’m not sure about the plethora of cables to reach through to get to the front bag (even though I like the non-aero Superbe levers otherwise). I also need to get that saddle back a little farther. Good Times! Re: [RBW] Re: Latest in Fenders!
When I needed my full-coverage VO Zeppelin fenders the most during this seemingly never ending parade of polar vortices, the weight of any single garment I wore exceeded that 75g in magnitudes and I would no more consider riding to work without one of them either. I am sure my current mudflap exceeds that by a good amount, but it is what didn't break when slop-loaded below zero. Watch here for droplets. Once I saw that in the video, I realized this was a project carried out in the complete absence of reality as I know it. If the perceived problem is defined by solution, the target audience cyclist should just stay inside on the roller; riding outside and the full spectrum of tire-flung slop is going to be a real disappointment. Like showing up in a Speedo at a poolside cookout instead of trunks. [RBW] Re: Old and New Hunqapillar Tire Clearences
Updating my experience after riding the 2.25 Smart Sams on more technical terrain. Positives: Front tire is fantastic! They handle the terrain beautifully. So much more confidence on the loose stuff than I had with the Dureme's (as expected). Mud and sod areas no problem (not suck you in and keep you till you die mud). They ride wonderfully. Negative: Chain and front derailleur rub for the rear tire. Clearances are fine everywhere else. I bent the front derailure away from the tire and that worked fine, but the chain line in low gear is far enough over that it has a propencity to rub and that startles me (and is bad from my bludgeoned brain). Solution: I'm now running the 2.1 as my rear tire. We'll see how that fairs. With abandon, Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Old and New Hunqapillar Tire Clearences
It's not an ideal solution, but one could move the crankset outboard a fraction with a longer bottom bracket to achieve clearance for the chain/tire. The solution is not ideal, as the chainline may be less optimum, but for the investment of a longer bottom bracket (give or take $30 for a Shimano unit) and a little tweaking of the front derailleur, it would be a worthwhile experiment to run the wider tire. [RBW] Re: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue
Thanks for the kind words everyone. The Sam Hillborne is indeed a handsome bike. I believe I got the last 62cm in this color, with the next batch, in the standard blue I'm told, not arriving for a little while. Today I went for a spin with the seat set back a little further and found it closer to where I usually set the saddle. I like a lot of setback, it helps me to balance my upper body without putting too much weight on my hands and arms. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS 50 cm Silver Quickbeam -$1500
Barely used, about 500 miles or less. Local sale only on SF Bay Area craigslist http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/4400140766.html This is mine and I'm trying to raise funds for my pooch's upcoming surgery... But I'd rather find another way to pay for surgery than sell this bike too cheap cuz I really like it. Can you tell I'm torn about selling?
