Re: [RBW] Large saddlesack simplest and/or cheapest way to mount on a bike without a rack and no eyelets?

Speaking of Hoss: I'm in the market for a good used one, or even a Med
Saddlesack -- I assume that a used Hoss would be cheaper. This for the Hon
Solo -- plenty of space there!

It's a stretch (about 23 miles each way), so I usually do it only about
twice a week. However, it's a really pretty ride; even when the weather's
against me, I still have an enjoyable commute. Which is more than I can
say about your wife's daily trek. Ugh. Can't imagine driving from Tysons

Re: [RBW] Large saddlesack simplest and/or cheapest way to mount on a bike without a rack and no eyelets?

2016-02-28 Thread Patrick Moore
It will probably be hard to find enough space for a Large without a
support. My 58 c-c 26" wheel custom (wheels slightly under 25" in overall
diameter) had *just* enough space for a Medium; without the stiffener it
would have dragged on the tire. Note that this was with bare tires -- no
fenders. Note too that I buckled mine directly to the Flite's rails.

That said, I carried 35 lb*on this setup with little trouble -- no
dragging, no rear brake interference and no untoward handling problems.

Note further that the Sackville Medium has an effective capacity (ie, can
hold as much miscellaneous groceries) as the Hoss, whatever the respective
theoretical measured volumes are. I'd say that, if you are not going to
carry hugely bulky or heavy loads, a Medium is all you need - it carries
more than I can fit in a single Ortlieb Back Roller.

I expect that a Large would carry almost as much as a pair of Ortlieb Back
Rollers, no?

Me, if I'm going to use a rack, I prefer panniers for volume flexibility
and ease of removal. The whole point of saddlebags, *for me,* is to forgo a
rack.

(Aside: The Hoss did very well strapped to the Turbo's rails, on my
erstwhile Ken Rogers BRT (nicely restored early '80s model). Without a
center rear wheel to interfere, the saggy (by comparison to the Sackville
design) Hoss could use all of its volume without interfering with anything,
and -- very nice! -- even a very heavy load had no effect on handling, and
-- even nicer! -- the trike never tipped over. The only annoying thing was
that, without some sort of parking brake, the trike tended to roll away
from you while you were trying to load it.

* I tend to measure the weight of particularly big loads -- not because I'm
compulsive but for reasons of scientific wonder. Right?

[RBW] Re: Off Topic, but perhaps not by much: Mac and Ubuntu compatible music manager?

2016-02-28 Thread sameness
Assuming you want roughly the same user interface and features across both
operating systems, I would recommend Tomahawk
.

Assuming you are trying to share the same local music library across two or
more computers, I would also recommend you move them to a NAS drive.
Tomahawk is good at rounding them all up, but it's always nice to just
point your player to a network device.

Assuming portability of the music files you are creating is not a primary
concern, I would lastly recommend you rip the music files to FLAC, not MP3.
You can always convert individual tracks or albums from FLAC to MP3 or AAC
or whatever later.

[RBW] Re: Off Topic, but perhaps not by much: Mac and Ubuntu compatible music manager?

2016-02-28 Thread Kieran J
Hey Patrick,

What are you trying to do, just rip CDs into digital files?

I still use iTunes because the OSX alternatives I tried don't sound as good
using my digital streaming/DAC/stereo setup. I agree that iTunes is a bit
ogre-like at times, but I always reluctantly come back to it.

It's probably outdated information as I have been using it for years, but
for converting formats, and for ripping outside of iTunes, I use XLD (now
called X Lossless Decoder
). Don't know if
it's Linux compatible.

As you can imagine, there's a ton of discussions about iTunes and its
alternatives on computer audio sites - probably your best bet.

[RBW] Re: Off Topic, but perhaps not by much: Mac and Ubuntu compatible music manager?

2016-02-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the information so far received. Let me make my request more
precise by describing the limitations both of purpose and agent.

I'd like to be able to insert a CD into the slot and have the application
automatically, or with a few button pushes, download the CD into a discrete
and discretely identified collection, even if it names the collection
"Downloaded by idiot at 4:33 pm on May 22d, 2016." I don't need it to look
up album art or relate it to something in an online store collection, or
give me biographical details about the artist.

I'd like the app to play the entire collection when I click on the
collection name or icon, and to play individual tracks when I click on the
track name or number.

I'd like to be able to copy collections from the original download
destination to another hard/software compatible device. (Right now, the
devices in question are a 2014 Macbook Pro and an otherwise discarded 2008
Macbook, both now running whatever the latest Mac OS is, but perhaps with
Ubuntu eventually on the 2008.

I may one day use a discarded iPhone as a cheapskate's iPod.

I will back up my collections, so loss of data is a risk I'm willing to
take.

Lastly, I will put my 14 1/2 year old daughter to work in doing the scutt
work of downloading, so discount my obvious impatience and irritability
with the whole process.

Thanks again!

Jeff Hagedorn: Is Tomahawk pretty forgiving to technological idiots? Will
it be gentle to someone who is doing this for the first time?

Kieran: I will keep your caution in mind, and look up XLD.

Thanks to both.

[RBW] WTB_ 8cm and 9cm threadless stems

2016-02-28 Thread jeffrey kane
Hi all -- pardon the cross-post from the internet-bob list ...

Am looking for one of each in 26.0 clamp size & 0 rise ... or -17 or 73/107
... or whatever term describes a level stem off an approximate 73 degree
head tube (you know what I mean).

I'm not terribly picky here -- just looking for some fit options for a new
fork, though silver would be preferred. I've got a fairly deep parts bin if
trades are of interest but for the sake of efficiency, I'm happy to just
shell out some cash so I can get moving on a new build.

Oh, and I could use a 1 1/8" to 1" steerer shim, too.

thanks! jsk

[RBW] FS: Tires - Big Ones, BG Rock/Roads, 650b Knards

2016-02-28 Thread David Banzer
Selling tires I'll probably regret in a month, but they're not on a bike,
so off they go.

Paypal Personal on these please, or cover fees. Shipping is NOT included.
As they're all folding beads, I think I can fit each pair into flat rate
padded envelopes.

1. Schwalbe Big Ones - $70 - Liteskin version, used about a month for daily
commutes, fits large Clem with SKS fenders, probably will buy these again
at some point, but want to try something different first

2. Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads - $60 - 700c, black sidewalls, used by another
lister, I never used them, one tire has more wear, rotate it to the front
and good to go

3. Surly Knards - $50 - 650b x 41 - used less than 10 miles, I'm back to
mostly 700c wheels

Would trade for Maxxis Torch (29x2.1) or 700c Schwalbe Super Motos.
Thanks,
David

Ubiquitous = Mp3. As long as the bitrate is decent (256kbps and above) it

Unless you are having big problems with it, or you have mega-audiophile

Thanks; I will investigate Tomahawk, but perhaps turn my daughter loose
first on iTunes and let her figure out how to group things by album, and
have the albums show up in some logical order and in a visible way. For all
I know, my problem comes simply from not using the View options wisely.

Tomahawk seems pretty sophisticated for my needs, which are a sort of Timex
watch for mp3 files: 1 button and 3 hands. Perhaps Vox? UMPlayer? Will
continue to research.

 shoot for in my opinion!

You brought up two related question. The first is about your tires. The
Nano/Knard combo will be fine. Anything more than 40mm is unnecessary.
As the second question is about bikes/tires, I'll add that like Mike
mentioned, some light knobbie tread will be really appreciated. So
whichever bike she brings I think she'll be happier with the tire that has
some knobs. That and whichever frame she will be most comfortable on for
six+ hours. Oh, and gearing for hills.

I don't think goatheads are going to be a big problem. I've been
pre-riding with my my road bike on Challenge Eroicas, which are pretty thin
rubber. No problems. So don't choose a tire just for puncture resistance.
Pick the tire for the terrain: 30 miles of roads, and 30 miles of hardpack.
A few short sand sections. As insurance, taking out the valve core and
putting a couple ounces of Stans wouldn't hurt at all. I'd do that before
tire liners. In fact, that is what I do!

So don't know if that helped clear things up for you. I hope some.
Anything else, definitely let me know!

Was out in the hills today, and it's beautiful!

Re: [RBW] FS Compass Stampede Pass 32mm tires

2016-02-28 Thread Bruce Smitham
I have 38mm XL Barlow Pass tires on my Ritchey Breakaway Ti Cross and
really like them. I rode up this big gravely fire road behind my house
yesterday and made it easily with these tires. I should take a picture so
you can see what they can handle. They get a bit sketchy going downhill on
the steep slick sandstone/hard pack clay. The Compass tires have also been
difficult to seat on my Ritchey Zeda II tubeless ready wheels. But they
perform nice once mounted. So I do like Compass tires. I know for sure I
don't like tan sidewalls. Go for the extra light with Compass and they are
certainly more durable than I expected. Now on the the Schwalbe Kojaks.
They feel almost the same just a little more stable. But I compared the
Kojaks to the Stampede Pass on my Rivendell Rodeo. I just think Rivendells
ride really well with Schwalbe tires. Another example of this was my wife's
55cm Rivendell Cheviot. I originally had 650b Grand Bois Hectres and the
bike rode a little weird. I remember riding my sister-in-law's Betty Foy
with Schwalbe Marathon Greenguards and it rode really nice. So I switched
my wife's Cheviot to the Marathon Greenguards and it rode great like a
Rivendell should. One last example about Rivendells working better with
certain parts (but not tire related)- I once built my 56cm Sam Hillborne
with a Shimano 105 groupset and it rode OK. It didn't have low enough
gearing for all the hills around my house so I switched to a more typical
Riv build. I went 9 speed Sugino triple, Dura-Ace bar-end shifters XT FD &
RD, Connex SS 9X chain, XT 12/34 cassette and it just works awesome the way
it should. Yes, I've bought & sold & fiddled with too many bikes in my
lifetime but I did get a chance to ride and test them all so I think I have
a good reference point. Give them a try. If I wanted just one tire to get
the job done for commuting, touring, all around use and fairly light, it
would be the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 40mm.

[RBW] not so simple simpleone

2016-02-28 Thread Steve Greco
I had, for a very long time, wanted to add a Quickbeam to my collection but
just barely missed the last batch of silver beams. I eventually scored a
nice deal on a Simpleone, which is a fantastic ride. I quickly began to
wish I could get some gears on it, and went about scheming the best way to
do it. I understand that adding gears to these Riv single-speeders is often
viewed quite negatively around here, and so I'll apologize up front for all
those I may offend. My goal with this build was to have a do-it-all ride
that I could easily change up, and that I would not be paranoid about
taking places, locking up wherever, etc. as I am with some other bikes.

I tooled around with the idea of a bolt on derailleur hanger for a while
but eventually decided to go all the way and braze one on. For shifting, I
added a single water bottle mount brazed on to the underside of the down
tube onto which I bolt a cable stop if I am running bar end shifters or a
paul thumbie. I also added a tiny triangular "shelf" just beneath the upper
drive side rack mount which allows me to bolt on a down tube shifter to the
seat stay. I mostly do this when I am running flat/city bars that don't
have much room to allow for a shifter on the bars. I machined some little
cable stops to bolt on so that the cable routing is clean when running
gears and virtually disappears when running a single/double cog set up.

I wanted to be able to simply swap rear wheels to go between single and
geared set ups and so it was important to me to avoid spreading the rear
triangle. I had a set of Velocity Dyads laced to Shimano Deore DX hubs
sitting around from a previous build which were spaced for 135. In order to
get this rear hub spacing down I purchased a Shimano DX BMX rear hub which
are 120 spaced and transferred the narrow cassette body to the Deore.
Theres a ton of these hubs laced to BMX wheels which you can get for cheap
$$ from the ebay. The narrow BMX cassette body was perfectly compatible
with the wider MTB hub and allowed me to fit a 6 speed cassette without
spreading the rear triangle.

I love the way this ride turned out and have been using it as my commuter
and travel bike for over 2 years. I usually ride it set up with a bar end
shifter on albatross bars most of the year and then switch to single speed
in the winter. If I'm taking it somewhere I'll usually throw some Jitensha
bars on it and relocate the shifter to the seat stay or keep it single
speed, depending on the terrain. I had to strip the paint to get all the
braze ons and so it was refinished in clear powder coat over a nice even
bead blast.

It's currently got some old Campy Nuovo Record bits that I moved from an
old Serotta Club Special that I had to part ways with. The crankset has the
outer teeth machined off to act as a chainguard. The fenders are VO
Zeppelins that are powder coated to "match" the clear. Jitensha rear
taillight mounted to the non-drive-side rack mount and an LED MagLite
mounted to the Nitto Campee mini front rack. The LED Mag is an awesomely
cheap front lighting option if you have a front rack and no dyno. The mag
is 1" on the front and 3/4" on the back. I bought two appropriately sized
P-clamps from Mcmaster-Car, stripped the rubber off the rear one and
replaced it with bar tape. This way the front clamp holds the light, and
the rear enables it to spin so you can simply twist the body of the light
to turn it on/off. Also, if you are a shop nerd like me, the Klein Tools
5102-14SP is a perfect fit for the smaller Wald basket.

Always really enjoyed the RBWOB, it's been a great resource over the years.
Thanks to all who contribute.

Cheers,

- S. Greco

[RBW] Clementine / Cheviot comparison and random questions

2016-02-28 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I have no business even thinking about it but I am considering a 59cm
Clementine complete or a 60cm Cheviot frame and building it up. Either
would be 90% city use (and fun and exploring) and potentially involving
multi-modal travel at times (bus rack, light rail, etc.). That said, local
transit rules state that no bike shall be longer than 80" or higher than
48", and the bus racks state a maximum wheelbase of 44". I might never use
the bus racks except in an emergency but the light rail is useful for
getting out and away from the city.

Random questions and a need for comparison...

   - Would a Clementine or Cheviot fit within those specs or even close?
80" total length, 44" wheelbase... I am suspecting not but wanted to at
   least ask and not assume.
   - Can anyone who has ridden both (a Clementine and Cheviot) comment on
   the ride differences?
   - For what it is worth I have a PBH of ~89cm (usual saddle height of
78cm) and am thinking the 59 Clem (not ...tine) *might" be too big, though
I always prefer bikes that are slightly too big versus going down in size.
   - I must be getting truly old, or maybe wiser, or both, but the idea of
a low mount/dismount height for a city bike makes perfect sense to me,
hence the Clementine/Cheviot fixation. That said, a Clem, if it fit would
   still be an option.

Just looking for any observations on the ride differences, maybe even
utility differences, if people have ridden both.

All help appreciated,

Bob
