He took out the camera and took pictures of my bike. Maybe we'll see it in
the Bombadil page on the website!

As for the size, after discussing the situation, Grant came and checked out
the fit and said it was the right size. Keven took me out to test ride the
56 frame, and I had to agree that while there was quite a lot of clearance,
the frame felt too tight horizontally. I could certainly ride it and
probably get used to it, but getting back on the 60 felt much nicer
 immediately.

That pretty much settled it for me and I left very happy after purchasing a
set of the new grey Sackville Saddlesack medium and Trunksack small for my
commutes to replace the pannier I use.

The advantages of keeping the 60 are several:
 - Love how it fits when riding it.
 - Can swap wheels with the Homer.

The potential disadvantage is limited stand-over clearance in certain gnarly
situations, but then again, I'm still keeping my dual suspension trail bike
and will test how aggressive I can (comfortably) mountain bike with the
Bombadil vs. trail riding like most people in this list do.

Time will tell if I made the right decision, but I do feel very comfortable
knowing that I addressed my concern directly with Grant, Keven and Mark, and
that after testing the 56 frame, I immediately confirmed their assessment.

I do appreciate everybody's great input on this topic. You can check the

Another one who is totally jealous of your bike and build. That deep
green is beautiful. For some reason, my now favorite color on a
Bombadil is green.

As to sizing, when getting my Atlantis, decided to go small. Probably
too small. Grant would never have let me do it. Wanted enough
standover with Big Apple tires. With the possibility of putting on
knobbies and going off road. With Albatross bars, it's a veryfine
bike. Although there are times I wonder what would have happened if
had gone one (or even two) sizes larger.

We built this bike with a little more rando attitude than our

since a lot of people are used to STI shifters, that choice worked in

[RBW] Re: Correct Bombadil size...

2009-12-19 Thread Mike
Rene, I just now looked at the pictures of your bike and it looks
beautiful. Proportionally it looks right. Sure, I can see how riding
a bike with a little less SO height could be concerning but unless
you're riding super technical trails I think you'll be fine. That
green color on your bike is perfect.

I know next year I'll be adding a bike to the stable, and maybe
letting go of one. I was initially thinking an LHT, then figure why
not go for it and get a Sam Hillborne especially since they'll be
stiffer and apparently have wider clearances. I also want to see what
the Atlantis replacement looks like although it'll probably be more
than I want to spend on the frame. And then... uggh... I noticed that
you can pick up a Salsa Fargo frame for $475... man, that with some of
their new Woodchipper bars... a tour worthy, dropped bar, mountain
bike... h... Furthermore... you can pick up complete Salsa Fargos
for like $1550 which isn't bad at all.

What I need to do is step away from the computer and head out for a
ride in spite of the rain...

I think Andy is at work today...

I had the same question earlier with the choice between wide Paselas and
knobbies. He said the Paselas would be fine.

Judging by the pix he
tookhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/wwqandy/sets/72157622922980908/,
I'm betting that extra 10% width from your Paselas will be appreciated by
the end of the day.

Weather is projected to by sunny and in the 70's by noon.

If you plans allow it, hope to see some folks out there tomorrow!

[RBW] Re: A poll: Long distance riding with uprights?

2009-12-19 Thread doug peterson
Personally I can't handle more than a couple of hours with upright
bars before the lack of hand positions causes things to stiffen up. I
tried Moustache bars for a while but didn't care for the wrist twist.
So back to drops. OTH, my wife dis-likes drops and does up to 50
miles on flat bars on her road bike and is perfectly comfortable.
Among my touring buds (mostly crusty old geezers set in their ways) we
have a guy who recently changed to flats on his Trek 520 and still
uses the stock bars on his converted MTB which he uses for much of his
touring. A couple of guys like the trekking bars for the multiple
hand positions coupled with being able to sit upright. If you look
around camp at cycle touring bikes, my rough guess is 2/3 drop bars
and 1/3 other. It's really a personal comfort and bike control
issue with no clear cut answer.

I have upright-style bars on Atlantis right now (flat bar with rise and Ergon grips), a 64 cm bike whichmeans these bars are pretty far up above the seat.

I don't think I can do it for any long distance. Shoulders and neck start hurting. Shoulders and neck hurt anyway, but this set-up aggravates it once mileage gets long. I'm going to switch to something else.

Re: [RBW] Headed out and rode.

2009-12-19 Thread James Warren

Yes, Bruce the Ram is awesome, and I see the Roadeo as finally being the bike to come along and take its place, but ifone already has a Ram,he/she might be all set. That red 63 cm Roadeo at Rivendell was tempting me a bit, but I am100% over it once I realized that in this size, my Ram and that Roadeo frame are only negligiby different in weight. If I want a Rodeo-style clubster in this size, I can do it; it's just a matter of hanging different parts on the Ram. If I were to get that Roadeo frame, I'd probably put a Sugino triple crank, an 11-34 in the rear and Jack Brown tires - uh, it's close to the bike I already have, but withthese differences:

-the stem would be threadless
-a 43.5 cm chainstay instead of a 44.5 cm
-BB would be 4 mm higher
-43.5 mm fork rake instead of 42.5 mm
-One fewermount for water bottles!

But I'm glad that Rivendell complemented its line-up by re-introducing a road bike similar to the Rambouillet but giving it some slightly racier tendencies. Is it fair to say that the sprectrum used to be Ram-Saluki-Atlantis, but now it has widened a bit to Roadeo-AHH-Bombadil with the center point being pretty much the same?Happy Road Riding,

Re: [RBW] Headed out and rode.

2009-12-19 Thread Bruce
I think you've said it well here.

I also have a Saluki and use different wheelsets/tires for a wider range of
purpose too. I can't quite make it into an Atlantis, but with sturdy wheels and
40 mm tires it can go lots of places. I took it on tour this year with about 40
lbs of gear (5 front, 35 rear) With lighter wheels and 32 mm pumped up tires,
and no luggage, it's reasonably quick. So, there is overlap based on equipment
with each bike, but each bike has a range that the others do not extend all the
way to. The current line up seems wider as you say, and has some excellent
offerings, but those of us with passe model names need not fret. Our bikes will
keep up with the new models just fine.

2009-12-19 Thread Esteban
I had Albatross bars on my Protovelo when I first got it.I loved
them. The more I rode the bike with other people, and the longer
distances I rode, the more dissatisfied I became. In other words, when
I began to use the bike for different purposes (riding harder for
longer), the Albatross bars weren't helping me do what I wanted -
Noodles are very comfortable. The other thing I found is that the
A'bars were working my quads more than other leg muscles.

I have Albatross bars now on my Kogswell errand bike, and like 'em a
lot.

So, I think they are good for distances, but I didn't like 'em for
more spirited riding.

Albatross on my Atlantis. Have done 60 miles on them without a major

And my Brompton has upright bars. Did a 40+ mile ride on that bike
this summer. In San Diego. Am sure jealous of that weather right

Last week, built up a Surly Long Haul Trucker and had flat bars
installed. Rode it for 25 miles today without a problem. Well,
except for the cold weather (22F when heading out with about a 10 mph

Am not a fast rider by any means. Don't mind being less aerodynamic.

Re: [RBW] Re: A poll: Long distance riding with uprights?

2009-12-19 Thread James Warren
Another answer from me: I don't know if this counts as upright but...

It was moustache bars at seat level on an XO-1 that for me has a very short top
tube.
I did well on a full day of riding, probably about 65 miles, no neck or
shoulder problems. I did take advantage of moving hands around and did use
dummy levers near the stem. I never rested my hands fully on the dummy levers.
At times, the heal of my hand was on the dummy lever near the stem while the
rest of my hand was forward on the bar. In general, it was a very good set-up.

I have Nitto Promenade swept-back bars on my cargo bike, but find that
I am signficantly less comfortable on longer rides than I am with drop
bars. I suspect it's not the lack of hand positions per se, but the
fact that I am sitting more upright most of the time. Drop bars let me
have more of a difference between upright on the tops, down low in the
drops, and in between (where I am most of the time).

[RBW] Re: A poll: Long distance riding with uprights?

2009-12-19 Thread Mojo
I am with James. Drop bars offer variety, with positions ranging from
upright to aggressive. For me this is less about getting aero (though
there is that). It is about being able to pull on the bars during
strong efforts such as climbing, and have multiple hand/body
positions. Cycling is repetitive enough without being locked into one
position.

For me an upright bar is great on my Towny for towny rides. But the
drop bar is a wonderfully versatile thing, no less so because it is
common.

Beth,

As I (my back) ages, I have found myself using Albatross bars more. I
have done 40+ miles on Albatross bars, and 40+ miles on the Brompton,
but would generally prefer drops. Depends upon how my back is feeling
at the time.

In the big sceme of things, I feel fortunate to be riding and I'll
ride what ever bars are comfortable.

One MTB = flat bars
One Bromton = whatever you call those things, but they are not drops
Four Rivendells = 3 drops, 1 Albatross
One Santana = drops

Originally about 30 miles, it got expanded due to popular interest.
Andy assures me that the expanded route will consume all available

flat boring) miles and mostly high quality stuff.

Riv content: 2 of 3 Atlantis' we know of on OC will be attending.

Re: [RBW] A poll: Long distance riding with uprights?

2009-12-19 Thread Horace
I've used Zoom Brahma bars on rides up to 100 miles, but I'm not sure if
that is the kind of upright you're talking about. It's more of a flat bar
with a built-in extension. I also have H bars on the front of my tandem,
which I've also ridden on rides up to 100 miles.

Most of my bikes have drop bars, though.

Horace.

[RBW] Honolulu/Kapolei/Honolulu on my Quickbeam

2009-12-19 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Today was the first chance I had to take a longer ride on my new Quickbeam.
Last weekend I had a cold so I'd not had a chance to do more than my usual
commute for the last 10 days.

I decided this morning, on the spur of the moment more or less, that I'd
ride out to my sister's home in Kapolei. I'd never done this ride before and
I thought there was a bike path most of the way (there was). However I
wasn't exactly sure where to find each leg of it.

The whole ride turned out to be about 58 miles from my front door back to my
front door. Some of the ride I was familiar with, but once I got as far as
the airport I was in new territory as it were. Of course I'd been out that
way a thousand times, but never on a bike.

Most of the way was on marked paths on roads or on designated multi-use
paths. It took about three hours for me to do the 30 or so miles to my
sister's place as I was forever checking the map on my iPhone to make sure I
knew were to go in-between legs of the path. Unfortunately there are very
few bike route markings so once one leg ends one has to cast about for the
start of next bit of path. Oahu isn't exactly bike friendly, though it
should be.

The highlight of the ride was the path around Pearl Harbor. It was much
nicer than I expected, though admittedly I wasn't expecting much. At times
it hardly felt as if I were in the city at all. Here's a link to the almost,
but not quite, useless map of the area from the Oahu bike plan:

http://hawaii.gov/dot/highways/Bike/oahu/Pearlharbor.htm

And, here are some shots I took along the way. It was a view of Pearl Harbor
I'd never had before and I've lived on Oahu most of my life. Sigh.

Now for the real good stuff.

The ride is mostly flat with just minor inclines so it was perfect for a
first long ride on my Quickbeam. I was able to really ride the bike without
having to think too much about whether I was going to make it up a hill or
not. I know I can ride 50-75 miles so there wasn't any question there
either. The only question is how would the Quickbeam do.

Fantastic.

It's a 66cm to go with my 95 PBH and it was comfortable for the entire 60
miles. I never got numb, stiff, or felt a bit uncomfortable. The I found
enough hand positions on the moustache bars so my hands were in good shape
the whole time as well.

I kept my ears tuned to hear any odd creaking that would signal that
something was coming loose and never heard a thing (besides my new Brooks
breaking in).

My 700x35 Paselas soaked up the bumps. That's important because local roads
and bike paths are...um...let's just say you understand the value of decent
tires. The wheels Rick built have been great as well.

All in all it was great ride, even if I take a wrong turn or two on the way
out (and only one on the way back). The ride back, even though it was into
the wind was much faster because I knew the way, though I'm not a fast rider
(nor do I want to be one particularly - I like stopping and seeing what's
what.

Really the QB is the perfect bike for that sort of ride. I got spend a lot
of time simply riding and enjoying myself and none worrying about the bike
or which gear I should be in. I ran the standard 40x16 all the way out and
back (flat I tell you, flat).

Just as important to me as comfort during the ride is how I feel afterwards.
Sometimes things feel fine while riding but afterwards one realizes all was
not well. None of that today. In fact after getting home and cleaning up a
bit, I went back out on some errands adding a few more miles to the day.

In fact, so far the only thing I can imagine changing on the Quickbeam are
my bags. I really didn't need the large Sackville Saddlesack today. I used
it because it was already zip tied to the bike and because I thought I might
do a little shopping when I got back into Honolulu. I didn't. However I
never felt held back it either. But, I'm going to get something to go on the
front soon; I just haven't decided what. The big saddlebag is great for my
daily commute when I might carry a laptop and stop for some groceries, but
it was overkill today.

That's pretty much it. I love my QB. I'm looking forward to seeing what it
gets replaced with in 2010, but I'm really, really glad I didn't wait. I
can't imagine the replacement being better, as good? Sure. But better? Hard
to imagine.

Aloha!
