[RBW] Re: OT: Going to Bespoke Bicycle Show - Need Camera Tech Device

2010-05-13 Thread Philip Williamson
I use the P "program" option on my Sony 828 ("vintage!") to force a
higher ISO. Lighting at bike shows generally blows, but museum
lighting is much better.
OT on your OT - I've learned to try to shoot the builder's name first
(headbadge, downtube or booth banner), then a full bike picture, then
the details. The full-bike picture usually has a blown-out highlight
right across the builder's name ("Biloxi? Bildung? Bilenky?") I'm
always surprised by the cool stuff I completely missed when I was
actually standing in front of the bike.

I also like to take pictures (bandito portraiture) of people at
museums and parades, but I've never done it at bike shows.

Re: [RBW] paul's racer brakes vs cantis questions

If I was getting a new bike, I'd definitely get the braze-on models.

The one downside I should mention so as not to seem biased: Once you try
them, you'll never want any other kind of brakes!

Really, they're just great. Thanks for making 'em!

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread Joe Bernard
I hear ya, Ginz. I got hold of a '92 Bstone catalog (still have
92-93-94) and fell in love with the XO-1 mostly because of those M-
bars. I ended up with a '94 XO-3 when they closed their doors...and
hated those bars with a passion. I still think they're gorgeous..as
long as I don't have to touch them.

Re: [RBW] paul's racer brakes vs cantis questions

2010-05-13 Thread Paul Price

Hey-

Thanks for that. We're pretty proud of our brakes. If you ever get a
chance the braze-on version is really nice. It adds a level of
stiffness and aesthetics.

The Racer M(edium) is poised to kick butt on anything out there. It
just adds power the stronger you squeeze it, and looks cool too. I
have a Salsa Cassaroll with them and 45mm fenders and 32mm tires with
absolutely no clearance issues and no fender squeezing either.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread cyclotourist
I hopped on the B-stone bandwagon just as they were shutting down in '94.
Always wanted an XO-1 as I missed out on the BOB firesale. Was able to get
a new MB-2 on dp discount from Beverly Hills Bicycle. Damn fine bike
BTW. I also had a used RB-T as well, which was tremendous amounts of fun to
ride on the fire roads. In fact, my All-Rounder is kind of a beefed up
version of that. I almost spent some silly money on a used XO-1 at one
point, but luckily realized that a 59 was just too small for me!

So long/short, I like seeing folks buying these and using them. I think
$1500 or even $2K for a brand new one is a good purchase for a iconic yet
usable and versatile bike. Would buying a Sam be a better investment?
Probably so, but it's pretty cool having a NOS orange B-stone!

Here's two of 'em being ridden as they should be:

[RBW] paul's racer brakes vs cantis questions

2010-05-13 Thread J C
Hello hip listers,

Do any of you use the Paul's racer or the racer m(edium) brakes? How would
you compare them to the neo retros? Do you know if the racer m brake works
if the centerpull is a bit skewed to one side or another- eg is the spring
tension on the brakes adjustable on both sides? They look like it in the
photos.

Do you have any brake squeal issues using the racers? Have you seen any
chain stay mounted versions- are they just glorified u brakes? Would you
buy them again? Are you using them on 700c wheels?

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread Ginz
My nostalgia is at this level:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/theginz/3560678107/in/set-72157618745798282/

I think that the exuberence for the '93 XO-1 is held mainly by the
urban bike nerd. Having personally ridden a m'stach bar, bikes
equipped with Rivendell-supplied parts, and an orange frame or two, my
lust for the XO-1 is pretty low. I certainly do not lust for the
loose bearing bottom bracket and squealing Dia Compe 986 canti's of my
XO-2.

I still say that if the XO's were not orange, the exuberence would be
far, far, far lower.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge XO fan. But, for my money, I'm headed
for Hunqapillar-ville. For now, my XO-2 rests comfortably in the
basement.

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread swenindy
I wanted one badly when they came out. It was the time I was getting
into serious riding and, wow, I wanted a 59cm orange one just like the
one in the auction! Didn't have the money then, passed on a chance
around 2000 to buy a NOS frame and fork for $400 (seemed too
expensive, now I wish I'd sprung for it). I'd still love to own one,
but I'd buy that Canti-Rom also on ebay right now for a bit more today
without question. I'd be happy to drop $2-300 on a cool Bridgestone
bike if I found one. I'd build it as a vintage rider (RB-1 or RB-2, a
tall-framed MB-1 or 2, a cool XO of some kind, etc.), but I'd do the
same for many cool late 80s and early 90s Japanese built bikes and
would surely buy an early Specialized Allez or Sequoia just as fast
(especially those first years when they were built by 3rensho!).

swen (looking for an early Allez or Sequoia in 59 or 60cm)

Re: [RBW] OT: Going to Bespoke Bicycle Show - Need Camera Tech Device

2010-05-13 Thread Eric Norris
See if there's a "party" or "indoor" setting under Scene. I use that setting
often when photographing indoors with other cameras (Nikon and Canon).
Experiment and see what looks best!

[RBW] Re: OT: Going to Bespoke Bicycle Show - Need Camera Tech Device

2010-05-13 Thread Jim Cloud
Joel,

The "Auto" setting on your Olympus camera will generally render
results that are acceptable. The other settings you've mentioned are
P: program (similar to Auto); "A" Aperture Priority, you select the
aperture setting and the camera will automatically set the appropriate
shutter speed; "S" Shutter Priority, the opposite of Aperture
Priority; you set the shutter speed and the camera provides the
correct aperture; "M" Manual, you're on your own and must select the
correct aperture and shutter speed.

In general, "A" Aperture Priority is used frequently for landscape
photography or Close-up photography when you want to control the depth
of field. "S" Shutter Priority is used to obtain stop action or a
deliberately blurred effect for action photography. "M" Manual
setting is for control freaks who want complete creative control (but
you better be experienced enough to know how to use this setting).

Depending on your camera, you probably can find fairly comprehensive
information on the controls by looking at one of the digital camera
website (e.g. http://www.dpreview.com/ or http://www.imaging-resource.com/).

Good Luck,
Jim

[RBW] OT: Going to Bespoke Bicycle Show - Need Camera Tech Device

2010-05-13 Thread JoelMatthews
Heading out to NYC for the weekend and first part of next week.
Definitely plan to visit the Bespoke Bicycle Exhibit at the Museum of
Arts and Design.

Last year someone gave me an Olympus digital camera. In one of my mad
recycling binges, I must have recycled the brochure, as it is no where
to be found.

There is a knob on top with picture settings. On the knob is the word
Auto (which is how I have always used it) But there are also a P, A,
S M, M in some sort of a box, and Scene.

A lot of you here seem to be quite camera handy. It seems to me
perhaps one of these settings may be better than the other for taking
photos in a modern museum setting. But which?

Well you probably do not want to buy a set of Pari-Motos.

>From the posts Kirk wrote on the 650 forum it seemed pretty clear to
me he did not mean the tire for off road use. (mine have still not
arrived so I cannot opine, but I see where James says his are very
soft). Kirk has an off road tire already. As far as I can tell, this
tire is intended for riding fast however relatively speaking on
pavement.

Finally, as best I know, I imagine there were a lot of other things
Kirk could have done with time to make money than putting together
this tires. It is a tad harsh to suggest anyone is trying to build
marketing hype around something that may not do much more than break
even.

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

Mine is - none whatsoever. By that time ('92-'95), I was out of
cycling with serious hand issues. It also did not help that the local
Bridgestone dealer was a store I preferred to not patronize.

I do see them out there in the Twin Cities, and appreciate the bike
for what it (and the other models) stood for. But not really
interested in buying one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?

2010-05-13 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
I have all three tires; Hetre, Cypres, and Pari-Moto. The Pari-Moto is lighter
and softer than the other two. It's more like a Vittoria CX, than any other
Panaracer I've ever had.

I still think the Hetre's are the funnest tires in the world to ride on.
Cheers!

the durability of this tire will be the deal-breaker for me. i
understand folks wanting a tire just a bit smaller than the hetre to
make things work better on particular frames. but a 38mm tire begs to
be ridden off-road, wherever that might take you. so far, the hetre
is more than up to task on this front. if the pari-moto is too
fragile for some rough stuff, my pre-order will be my last.

maybe grand bois will fill that void.

[RBW] X0-1 Nostalgia

2010-05-13 Thread Ryan
Interesting question...

Still ride my 93 X0-1 a lot. It's old enough to drive now.I love my
Rivendells, but in some ways this bike is still my favourite

This latest auction is interesting; one thing I noticed is that this
59cm X0-1 has a Tange MTB tubing decal. As far as I know, I thought
all of the X0-1s were made with Ishiwata 0XX tubing (22,24...etc).
That's what the catalogue indicates,
anyway...although the large 59cm size might have required something
sturdier.

The X0-1 is an iconoclastic bike, and love it or hate it , it seems to
spark passionate debate. So orange is an apt colour.

If mine ever got stolen or destroyed, I would mourn a unique,
irreplaceable bike and I doubt I would seek another for the prices
it's been fetching lately. Mine has 17 years of history...and some non-
stock parts...I don't get why this fellow scoured ebay, etc for stock
parts, because a lot of the stock parts were good but not remarkable.I
think the frame, for a production frame , was really quite well done.
It's not a custom Riv or an early Riv all-rounder. That I grant you.
But it has an aesthetic I really admire

The bike's a rider and keeping it totally stock doesn't make a lot of
sense.

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?

2010-05-13 Thread Bill M.
For me, an 'event' would mean a century or a brevet. A long ride not
necessarily ridden as a race with sharp accelerations and sprints, but
where comfort and efficiency would be at a premium. Where the tires
might carry a bit more than a 15 pound bike and a 140 pound rider, but
not a touring load.

I would call the P-M an 'event' tire along with other "supple, high-
performance" tires like a Challenge Parigi-Roubaix, as opposed to
'everyday' tires like a Marathon or CdlV that trade weight and
suppleness for durability and puncture resistance. We'll have to see
if it lives up to that expectation.

I had hoped to have mine in time for a 100k charity ride on Saturday,
but hope for that is fading fast. In the absence of the P-M's, I
haven't decided whether to ride the 650b Maxy Fastys, or just mount up
the skinny-tired go-fast. It's nice to have options.

It was not uncommon to age tires. I did it myself with tubulars. I

I did it on a B68. I used a hacksaw to cut the bolt most of the way

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread Joe Bernard
It's probably a good thing I'm married and have the requisite "there's
no way you're spending that much money on a bike you won't ride"
limiter inherent in such arrangements. Even though I mostly ride a
recumbent now (Riv pedals, clothes & bell), I have huge nostalgia for
XO-1s, and would pay stupid money for one. I love the orange of the
'93, but the original white '92 with sidepulls is probably the one I
would pop for. A CB-Zip, or replacement for my stolen '94 XO-3, would
be nice, too.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto Bullmoose Bar

2010-05-13 Thread Jim M.
If you're talking about the latest Riv/Nitto bullmoose, they only made
50 of them in the first run, so there aren't a lot available to be re-
sold. I love mine and it's not for sale. I know they are working on a
version with a longer extension, but I don't know when they'll have
some more in stock.

I did not need a spacer for my fender. However, I do have the Riv
Portuguese cork grips. I put an ever so light coating of amber
shellac on them. Just enough to bring out the grain (cork is part of
tree) and give it a bit of a tan.

Amber shellac and cork are a winning combination!

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread James Warren

When I got mine, I was guilty of the nostalgia a bit, but since I've owned it,
it's worth to me has come not from its craftsmanship, but its functionality. I
have an Atlantis, and the XO-1's versatility has definitely competed with the
Atlantis's.

[RBW] Re: What do you think is behind the new limited sizes at RBW?

2010-05-13 Thread William
I assumed this thread was going to be about all the new 4-size models
(Hillborne, Hunqapillar, initial Bomba offering), not the 10-size
Atlantis.

They (RBW) still have the historical Atlantis geo-chart up on the
'Frame Specials' page:

http://www.rivbike.com/images/static/upload/RBW-GeometryCharts.pdf

That chart has all 10 Atlantis sizes described, including 64, 66, and
68. Give them $1000 (half-deposit) and wait a couple months and you
should be able to get what you want.

2010-05-13 Thread GeorgeS
I just packed a 56cm Surly Crosscheck in the hard box that Bilenky
sells. It was a tight fit. I also had to remove the fork from the
frame and I had to take the tire off the rear wheel to get it in.
Pictures are here.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Choburger/AdventureOfTravelingWithABikePartI#
I did not have to remove the RD from the frame. This is not a job to
do if you are rushed. Patience is required. Transcendental
meditation if you've got it could help.

but what makes the "pari-moto" an "event" tire compared to other
supple, performance tires? is the rubber compound made partly of
crushed paint chips from old singers and herses? is the casing woven
with hair samples from the world's great randonneurs?

and does "event" mean "fragile?" because it makes zero sense to have
a 38mm tire that you can't ride off road and beat up a little.

none of this is directed at you, Joel. just general musings on this
whole "event" marketing thing. and i totally understand wanting to

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread JoelMatthews
Probably a lot of these eBay bikes benefit from actual collector bike
price spill over. People see a 1973 Masi, an authentic Herse, a
Singer made by Singer, or an old Eisentraut go for a bundle on line.
Rather than focus on the bike pedigree, they focus on steel lugs and
age.

The psychology is understandable. As a result the buyers are either
paying too much for a riding bike or making a bad investment in what
most likely will never be a collectible.

I've had many bridgestones (93 X0-1, 92 RBT, 91 RBT, 90 MB2, 91 CB-0,
93 RB1, 94 RB1, and a few other CB-x's passed through too) -- I agree
with the assesment that these were pretty poorly constructed bikes,
especially at the bottom bracket. I'm pretty sure they were machine
brazed at the bottom bracket, and I'd love to hear Grant throw in on
that, though I can understand why he wouldn't.

That said, to this day, the RBT is still my all time favorite
production bike -- a sensible, fast, light, tough bike that takes fat
enough tires and has good-enough tubing. I race my 91 RBT at the local
CX races and I take it trail riding multiple times a week. I love it.
I have two RBTs and I abuse them, hack them, and repair them to no
end. They're great bikes.

I understand why people seek out XO1s too, for the same reasons: a
great bike with a set of features that you simply cannot buy off the
floor of any LBS today. I personally love the concept of road bike
with 26 wheels and standard tubing. I wish the XO1 I had was a 55; I
wouldn't have sold it. I secretly keep my eye out for the 1st Gen Riv
all-rounders in my size. That said, for $1000-- you can easily find a
good-enough builder to TIG you up a copy of the XO1 and paint it
orange.

If I were king of the world, I'd find the most pristine example of a
93 xo-1, put it in a bike museum, and then tax all other xo1 owners
that didn't ride them regularly. I think these bikes should be ridden
hard to be fully appreciated.

RE: [RBW] 650B Quickbeam? (was: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?)

2010-05-13 Thread Frederick, Steve
I almost missed it myself! The last (silver) run of QB's had two smaller sizes
than previous runs, a 50cm and 52cm. They featured 650b wheels and Silver
sidepulls rather than 700c and cantis. I posted to the 650b list that I wanted
suggestions for a 650b fixed gear "like a Quickbeam," and a helpful fellow (Ron
Lau, I think) gently pointed out that there was just such a thing--a 650b
Quickbeam. I ordered the very last 52cm they had the next day!

I usually ride a 54cm but it was easy to adopt a 52cm QB to fit me--didn't even
need full quill extension of a Tech. Deluxe stem...I can't even use Tech
Deluxes on some of my 54cm Rivs--can't get the bars low enough with them! As
far as I can tell/recall, the geometry is the same as other QB's-just scaled
down a bit for the two smaller sizes and smaller wheels.

I've shared them before but here's some pics of it:

Just a few years ago I would probably have been bidding, but my
'level' has dropped significantly. If I found one at a yard sale or
the like I would sure buy it, but I am no longer looking for any older

Yikes!

Now I feel like a real jerk... I am about to begin building up my
Rivendell 'Bleriot', AND my next custom [if and when I get a 'next'

This thread reminds me of seeing the movie 2012 a few weeks back, any
chance the government will put a couple 650B rims, tires & tubes on
those fancy Arks?

Well, I am not an event sort of person, so am not really the right
source to ask.

However, I note the Rene Herse site says a fair percentage of its
bikes are ordered with Paris-Brest-Paris in mind. Presumably some of
those people will want to use the Pari-Moto. I believe Kone, and
elsewhere Peter Weigle both suggested as much in discussions on the
tire.

Again, what do I know? Organized rides are absoulutely not something
I do.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?

2010-05-13 Thread rswatson
Mine will be "event" tires. I'll use the Hetres everyday, and save the
Pari-Motos for big brevets, personal record attempts, and other special
occasions away from the thorn-infested streets of Albuquerque. I might even
enter an honest-to-goodness race on them!
Mind you, I'm basing this on the assumption that they'll be more delicate and
wear out faster than the Hetres. And that they'll they'll offer some advantage
over the Hetres in terms of speed and efficiency, whether real or "in my head"*
I originally thought the Hetres would be "special event only" tires till they
turned out to be so durable and long lasting.

Agreed 100%. I had a 1993 XO-3 (lugged, Japan-made, same geometry as the
XO-1 with slightly heavier triple-butted tubing). Actually, I had two, and
broke both in exactly the same way: BB shell broke at the base of the
seat-tube lug.

I enjoyed the bike well enough for a while--it was my first attempt at an
allroad bike, and I built it up from the frame with my own selection of
components--but I've ridden much nicer production bikes since then, my 1984
Sequoia foremost among them. The XO-3 was very stiff and seemed to transmit
even the smallest road vibrations directly into my body, even with 1.75"
tires at 75psi (this was long before my eye-opening experience with 650B
tires at 55psi).

I also had a '92 RB-1, which I miss far more than the XO-3. Even with 28mm
tires at 95psi, it rode much smoother than the XO-3, and just had a springy
want-to-go-FAST feel entirely lacking in the other bike.

So, like Tim, I have very little nostalgia for the XOs, except as a
praiseworthy attempt to do something completely different in production
bikes.

If any Bridgestone could tempt me these days, it would be the '92-'94 RB-T,
which has very similar geometry to my Sequoia. And no, I wouldn't go for
the nostalgia build--it would be the normal mix of old and new stuff I have
lying around: TA or AT cranks, modern Shimano 9-speed drivetrain, Ergo
brifters, BMX pedals, etc.

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread Tim McNamara
I bought my wife a 55 cm 1993 XO-1 from the Bridgestone Owner's Bunch
sale in (IIRC) 1994 when B-stone was closing up shop in the US. It
was an engagement/wedding present. She loved the bike and rode it
lots. Unfortunately it met its demise at her office one day. It was
locked up in front of the building when a lady apparently confused
the brake and gas pedal while parking (note it was a Toyota, so who
knows). The car surged over the curb directly at the front windows
of a beauty parlor on the first floor, ran over the bike and the sign
to which it was locked, was diverted by this the accelerated down the
sidewalk parallel to the building until it struck a tree. You could
see where she continued to spin the wheels until the car died. No
one was hurt but several people- the driver, the beauticians and
their customers were of course terrified.

The bike was destroyed. Every tube was bent except the head tube.
The wheels were mangled. Almost nothing was salvageable. The
driver's insurance company (State Farm) was a complete PITA to deal
with (and lost our auto and homeowner's insurance business as a
result). My wife was distraught, not only for the bike itself but
also its meaning.

Here's why I tell about the tragedy. I replaced the bike with a
Heron Road with full Superbe, building it up over months at a
friend's shop and sneaking it into the house while we were out on
Christmas Eve with the help of neighbors. She was shocked and
delighted and, more than 10 years later, rides the Heron lots. But
when I received the Heron frame from Rivendell and examined it
closely and compared the two frames, I realized something about the
XO-1.

It was crude. The lugs were not attractive. They were not filed or
thinned. Tube mitering was not good. The brazing was sloppy and
incomplete around the BB shell. The paint was not well done. The
Heron was a *vastly* better made frame. My nostalgia for the XO-1 as
a bike vanished (although my nostalgia for what it meant- it was
basically our engagement ring- remains).

The XO-1 is an iconic bike. It's a unique moment in bike history
with nothing really like it before or since from a major
manufacturer. But there are better bikes to be had (and Rivendell
has a lot of 'em). For the price these go for on eBay, I'd rather
buy a better bike with that money.

So my level of nostalgia for the XO-1 as a bike is pretty low. I'd
pay maybe $350 for one in near-mint condition. Obviously I won't be
winning any auctions...

they are also a full 38mm wide, so comparison/competition with the
Hetre is inevitable. which makes perfect sense because the pari-moto
it's simply a high performance superfat tire, just like the hetre.
and, to my mind, the size was chosen to not solely for performance,
but to fit frames on which the hetre was a bit snug.

anyway, this "event" tag is ridiculous. if anything is an "event"
tire in 650b, it's the grand bois cypres. but, what the heck is an
event? a race? nobody is going to be racing on these. they're fat
performance clinchers, just like challenge parigi-roubaix's, grand
bois tires, etc. ride 'em. enjoy 'em. wear 'em out.

about a half pound lighter per set too.

grand bois pulled the plug on its baby hetre project, which was a
smart move.

but, I predict that as soon as BQ does further testing regarding fast/
fat tires - specifically, where the performance ("performance" in a
rando sense, i.e. speed *and* comfort; because narrower tires are
still faster for flat out speed) benefits of supple wide tires levels
off - Grand Bois will introduce a new tire.

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders

2010-05-13 Thread Rene Sterental
Thanks Doug,

I placed an order for a Nova from Wiggle in England. Free shipping and cost
of the rack is only $115 compared to $150+ here in the US. I think I'll go
with that one and then reassess from there. I have yet to find some time to
call RBW, but I'm likely going to be returning the Nitto Big Front Rack as I
believe my needs will be well met by the Nova/Nitto Mini combo for now.
Still... maybe I'll keep the Nitto just in case... :-) It's a beautiful rack
and Ray's P-clamp solution is a good one as well. I still have my Tubus
Cosmo that the Nitto Big Rear rack replaced, and haven't been able to decide
to sell it. It's also a beautiful rack and I like it a lot as well. I used
to have it on the AHH, and then removed it when I decided to go with the
Sackville saddlebag medium in gray for my commutes. Unfortuately, I don't
think that bag goes very well with the Nitto Big Rear rack, but will have to
try it. I was using it on the Bombadil with the Nitto R-14 and it worked
very well this way.

Now if I can just find more free time... :-)

[RBW] What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-13 Thread William
I'm sure several of us are watching this XO-1 auction with interest on
a NOS 59cm 1993 XO-1:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300424850980&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I watch with interest just to the extent that it is interesting to see
people willing to pay more than retail for a 17 year old bike. Of
course, getting the equivalent of that bike today would cost even
more, a lot more, but still.

The thing that got me thinking was the title, including the text
"Rivendell fans rejoice!". The vibe I have gotten from my short time
on this forum is that there is not a ton of deep seated nostalgia for
the XO-1, even though none of us is all that surprised at XO-1's going
for $1500 to $2000. I don't think many from this forum is rejoicing
at the availability of that particular XO-1 either. Sure, some of us
own one, or have owned one, and like(d) it just fine.

So, I guess my question is: Do you keep your eyes out for
Bridgestones? Which one(s) do you look for? What would you pay
relative to retail to get one? Would you restore it, or resurrect it
into something else?

For me, I always liked the RB1, and got the opportunity to buy a 1992
basically unridden for $600. I bought it and keep it at a vacation
place where the riding is flat. I'm happy I did. The XO that I am
nostalgic for is my 1993 XO-2, which had dirt drops. It's long gone
but I'd love to get another one of those. I'd probably pay $400 for
that or a 1994 XO-3. I almost jumped on a 1993 XO-3 on ebay last
month, that went for $300 or so, but I would have ended up replacing
nearly everything on it.

[RBW] FS: Campy Record Crankset and BB

2010-05-13 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi Everyone,

I don't know what the interest level on this list might me, but thought I'd
offer here first before heading over to ebay.

Campy Record Crankset 9 speed 175mm arms with 53/39 rings (square taper). Arms
are in great shape with some pitting in the oxidation but you have to look
close. The rings are used, but have lots of life in them. The cranks are the
silver aluminum with one spider arm hidden behind crank arm.

The bottom bracket is the Record 102mm square taper ti spindle with english
threading, also in great shape.

I'd like $120 for both plus $10 for shipping.

Thanks for looking,

Joe

[RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?

Different not superior.

I believe in some of his posts to the 650B forum, Kirk specifically
said these were not meant to compete with the Hetre. The Pari-Motos
are skinnier and lighter. They are meant for events, if that is what
you do, or for nice day unloaded speed riding.

The Hetres are the every day, distance, I want a great ride, don't
care about being up front of everyone tire. I Have two sets of
Hetres, and two sets of Pari-Motos on the way. The Hetres will get
most of the work. Assuming the PariMotos live up to the promise, they
will see sunny summer afternoon duty.

RE: [RBW] Re: Pacenti Pari-Moto 650B Tires?

2010-05-13 Thread Frederick, Steve
They're meant to be what Hetres were originally supposed to be--a 38mm slick.
The hetres turned out to be a bit fatter than that and don't fit as many bikes
as a 38 should. I have Hetres on my Quickbeam but the PariMoto's will be a
better option for my Saluki!

I think it's great that Pacenti is getting new tires made (see the
recent discussion about 650B tire choices and the apocalypse), but I'm
still a little unclear on how the new Pari Motos are different from
(or superior to) the Hetres. A little skinnier and a little slicker? I
have to say the Hetres are hard to beat. Plush, light, durable,

Curious to hear from folks who've ridden them both.

[RBW] Re: 650B dead or alive?

The owner of the of the first Bicycle Shop I worked at told me that he
kept note of the religion of his neighbors. The reason was, he knew
that devout followers of certain religions were encouraged to
stockpile food for the apocalypse and aftermath. He didn't spell out
his backup plan, but just made the statement "when all the food is
gone, remembering where it's hidden is valuable information"

Ken, can I please have your home address and the PIN for your alarm

Love my Bullmoose bars. Beautifully made and super functional on a
nice cruiser bike.

You might also check out the Rawland version...bar and stem are
separate pieces. Not cheap and not as pretty as the Nitto version, but
it might be useful for some folks.

Now I feel like a crackpot, which isn't an unfamiliar feeling for me,
in case you were wondering! My original post suggested a modest
"stockpile" of two rims and four tires. Not exactly a lifetime supply

temporary shortage or the inventory bottlenecks that frequently affect
the supply of bike parts (it was nearly impossible to get 27"/630
tires of ANY kind in the summer of 2008, for example).

Tires and tubes will keep for a long time in a cool, dark, dry place.
I think it helps to keep them in a plastic bag, too. I have heard that
some old Italian racer types would "age" their sew-ups under
controlled conditions for a number of years, as they would a bottle of
wine, apparently because they believed that aging improved the tires
in some way.

[RBW] Schwalbe Big Apples, 622X60

2010-05-13 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Fewer than 1,000 miles, vg condition, no sign of tread wear, $55 shipped the
pair CONUS.

Note that these measure a true 60 mm on 25 mm rims.

Will trade for good quality smallish rear pannier.

I just bought Walbike's last two Liteskins -- nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.

[RBW] Re: What do you think is behind the new limited sizes at RBW?

The Atlantis sizing chart on an old flyer I have shows 61, 64, & 68 in
the larger sizes. Since the basic design is timeless, maybe post a
"wanted to buy" & see what pops up?

[RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders

2010-05-13 Thread doug peterson
Rene:

I have the Duo but have not used the Nova. My reason for the Duo is
the 2 pieces are separate & it makes easier packing for shipping. My
total front load is usually under 25 lbs. From the pix, the Nova
looks to have some adjustment, so there may be latitude in the eyelet
placement. With the Duo, there are 3 sets of mounting holes on the
mid-fork bar so they eyelets have to be spot-on. On
theTouringStore.com website, there's a big caution about the need for
specific dimensions on the eyelet placement and a warning that not all
mfgs are consistent. I saw a couple of Surly LHTs last summer with
front racks where the pannier attachment bar was at something like a
30 degree angle. Front racks can get complex.

2010-05-13 Thread doug peterson
Lisa:

The Nitto Big Front Rack gives you a lot of options and is a wonderful
rack. In my case, when torch first touched fork, the bike was already
six years old, with plenty of paint abuse in evidence. You not
wanting to re-paint a brand new fork is understandable. Eyelets are a
nice convenience but clamps do the same job.

yes. works like a charm! i have a very clean fenderline with

[RBW] Re: 650B dead or alive?

2010-05-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Now I feel like a crackpot, which isn't an unfamiliar feeling for me,
in case you were wondering! My original post suggested a modest
"stockpile" of two rims and four tires. Not exactly a lifetime supply
to get one through the apocalypse, but enough to get one through a
temporary shortage or the inventory bottlenecks that frequently affect
the supply of bike parts (it was nearly impossible to get 27"/630
tires of ANY kind in the summer of 2008, for example).
