[RBW] Old Raleigh Riv-ification

2010-08-13 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I'm spending more and more time in Hilo as my folks are getting on in
years...at least that's what I tell myself. In truth it's great to get away
from Honolulu and spend some time doing nothing. But it was getting to me
that I didn't have a bicycle and after a day or two I start getting antsy.
The solution was to get a bike and leave it at their place. I sincerely
couldn't justify buying a new Riv and riding it only a couple of days a
month so I looked around for a used bike. I got really lucky (I hope) and
found All Kine Bicycles here in Hilo (http://www.bicyclehawaii.com/). It's
most a used bike shop and the owner has boxes and boxes of parts in the
dungeon. He's really a great guy and loves cycling...if you ever need
something in Hilo I'd start with his place (which apparently had moved
around over the years).

Anyway he had this old wreck of a Raleigh there at a price I couldn't pass
up (no it wasn't garage sale priced but hey, I don't begrudge him a living
either).

The tires were shot and I didn't like the old Avocet seat. The stem wasn't
right and the cabling was ancient. Still it's a real lugged steel frame with
a working 10-speed SunTour drive so...I gave him my money and went back to
Honolulu for a couple of weeks, but now I'm back...

Added:

New cables
New bar tape (yellow but not cloth/shellac - that'll come in a month or two
when I come back with moustache bars)
Brooks B-17 (a spare I had in the closet)
Grip Kings (bought for something else and never used - though I did repack
them immediately after I got 'em)
10cm Nitto Dirt Drop (the bike is touch smaller than I'd have bought from
Rivendell so I though this might work - seemed fine on the ride home)
Pasela TG 28 (yes I know...but I was worried about room - do I hear 65OB in
the future?)
And a cheap saddle bag to hold stuff till I get things completely sorted
out.

I'll probably add a moustache bar next time I'm out - I fell in love with
those when I visited Rivendell and have one on my Quickbeam. Next year I
expect I'll strip it all down and have it powder coated...someone did an
atrocious job of painting this thing, even covering the head badge. The
paint is bubbling up now (years later I expect) and I suspect there might be
spot of rust (this is Hilo after all) so I'm not going to put it off for
long, but the frame seems solid otherwise.

So it's not a Riv but it is being Rivified.

I rode it the 3 miles home, mostly uphill though not particularly steep, and
it was really sweet. I've got a couple adjustments to make to the fit but
that's tomorrow. :-)

Anyway, here's are some shots of the whole thing as it stands now.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157624714161228/with/4886854747/

Tomorrow I'll give it a better workout and see about making those little
adjustments.

Aloha from lovely Hilo, Hawaii!

Bob

Re: [RBW] Trangia experiments

2010-08-13 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Excellent report. I love my Trangia which I got myself for Xmas. I've only
taken it out once on a 3 night trip to Oahu's North Shore to ride this
year's Haleiwa Metric Century (great ridereally great ride). I didn't do
any major cooking, lots of hot coffee and tea, and instant oatmeal. I also
made eggs in a bag and heated up some canned stew - nothing creative but it
sure worked well. I'm hoping to get out again this year for at least an S24O
or two.

I'm definitely keeping your recipes on file for those.

Aloha!

Just received mine in the mail yesterday. While flipping through,
noticed a very nice ad by Renaissance Bicycles on page 16. Beautiful
photo of a perfectly built up Sam Hillborne. That, along with a
Rivendell ad a few pages later means twice as much Hillborne as normal

Will read the magazine after finishing The Lost Cyclist.

[RBW] 650b tire swap-Hetres for Motos?

2010-08-13 Thread Frederick, Steve
I have a set of lightly used Hetres, black tread, tan sidewall that I'd swap
for a set of similarly used all black Pacenti PariMotos. I like the Hetres
fine but I'd like to try Pari's on this bike (650b Quickbeam) and I think it'd
look good with black tires...

Sorry for the cross post, fellow multi-listers!

Thanks, Steve

Thanks Eric for the complements on the Ad and the Sam Hillborne.

Like Rivendell, we are happy to support the Adventure Cycling
Association. We believe in their mission and appreciate the wealth of
touring oriented information that they readily provide.
For the next year or so, we've pledged 1% of all of our sales go to

[RBW] Re: Trangia experiments

Anne:

Here's a site where reviewers mention the same issue I've described -
some stoves leak and others do not:

http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/trangia-spirit-stove-reviews

Here's a quote from the FAQ's from Trangia's site that probably helps
to prove your stove is defective (http://www.trangia.se/english/
2937.faq.html):

11. If there is some residual alcohol in the spirit burner after
cooking, can the alcohol be saved in the burner (with the lid closed)
for the next day?

The fuel can be stored inside the burner for the next day (or the next
couple of days), provided that the lid is properly closed and the o-
ring is undamaged. However, it is essential that the burner have [sic]
cooled down completely before the lid is closed. Please note that the
alcohol must not be stored in the burner for a longer period of time.

Seems like the person who emailed you didn't read Trangia's own
literature!

It IS a bummer to have a leaky Trangia. It's frustrating. They are/
were? designed to be carried with fuel in them and it's a nice
feature. Luckily, the burners are about 12 dollars. I replaced my
leaky burner 2 years ago and have over 150 field days with the stove
without a leak. Storing fuel in the stove over a month or more hasn't
been an issue either, though I'll acknowledge there's really not good
reason to do this.

Hope this helps,

Dave

It's my understanding that the production version will have the same
curved dropout as the Quickbeam.
I recall Grant saying identical to the Quickbeam except made by Maxway
in Taiwan and not Japan.

One thing that often tempts me to get my older Rivendell repainted is the

[RBW] Re: Latest Adventure Cycling Magazine

2010-08-13 Thread doug peterson
Kudos to whoever put the ad together. I quickly thumb thru AC cover
to cover but the orange Sam with full rackage brought me to a quick
halt. Before yesteday I had never heard of Renaissance Bicycles
(granted, my univerise is small) but I dropped everything to log on to
see who are those guys?. The Soma, Riv VO logos at the bottom got
thinking something's going on here. Looks like they've found a nice
niche to fill. Love the concept.

[RBW] Is this rim wear unusual

2010-08-13 Thread carnerda...@bellsouth.net
My 650B Sam Hillborne has Velocity Synergy rims and Shimano Deore V-
brakes with the pads that came on them. Since new the front wheel has
had a little tick with each revolution while braking. I assumed this
was a slightly raised joint line that would flatten out with normal
wear. Over the last two weeks I have had three12-15 mile rides on
gravel and chip seal roads which include some steep sections with
multiple pot holes and required heavy braking. Between these rides I
had the usual short commutes to work. I noticed that braking in the
front had become much more uneven to the point that firm application
of the front brake caused an unpleasant thump with each revolution.
I decided it was time to clean the braking surface. When I did I
found the front rim to be fairly deeply scored and in a pattern where
the deepest scoring corresponds to each spoke hole. This is the same
on both sides of the rim. The rear rim does not have this pattern. I
have never seen this and can't find mention of it on the internets.
The links below are to pictures I took to try to show the pattern.
Am I doing something wrong to cause this? Should I change to
different brake pads? Should I be worried about this?

Re: [RBW] Is this rim wear unusual

2010-08-13 Thread Tim McNamara
I would look at the braking surface of your brake pads. From the
looks of it, you've got bits of aluminum or other abrasive material
imbedded in the pads.
