[RBW] Re: need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-18 Thread mike
Both VO and Soma have a few bars that are albatross like, but
narrower. Actually, so does Riv, the Dove Bar -- classic 3 speed
bars. Cheaper than Albatross too!

Soma has that Lauterwasser bar that's sort of half drop half
moustache. There seem to be a lot of choices to try!

I recently tried the Nitto u-shape bars B-617 Promenade Handlebar.
Mixed feeleings about it. It's narrow - 45cm. I think it needs to be
either higher or farther away than is possible on this particular bike
so that my knees are well clear. It's comfortable on the grip
portion, or to grab it on the horizontal part near the stem clamp.
It's still a 'possible' for the simple-one that is hopefully coming
soon.

I like the albatross. I like drops too.

[RBW] Re: Hello folks

2011-05-18 Thread Joes Calendar
Hello Scot,

I'm fairly new to following this list and haven't posted before. I've
owned an Atlantis for about 10 months - love it! - and use it daily on
a 30 mile round-trip commute. I've taken it on a couple of short
tours and have a longer one planned for the end of June. The first
Rivendell I saw in person was an Atlantis on my commute the day mine
arrived at home. There was a guy riding it on the trail I commute to
work on and he had had his about 7 years. It looked as beautiful as a
new one.

I am located in Northern Virginia, but spend time in Clearwater fixing
up (just about done) the condo my parents lived in for many years, so
in about 2-3 years when I get my bike down there I'll be able to say
I'm from the Tampa Bay area.

to get and ride my bike. I have been drooling over the Rivbike website
for a few years now and I came into the opportunity to get one and
took it. It was a little bit of a gamble as I have not actually seen
one in person. I am going solely on research and reputation. I have
seen and ridden a Grant designed Bridgestone and I am fully confident
in his work and Keven was very helpfull in my parts selection and
 sizing.

I am also a member of the Surly Owners Group and i own and ride a
Surly Long Haul Trucker. I have put allot of miles on my Surly and
have also lost over 70 pounds riding it so My Riv is a bit of a reward
for reaching a short term fitness goal and will hopefully keep me
motivated to reach my long term goals of further weight loss and
fitness as well as replacing my cars whenever possible.
I have already gotten some good info from your group here and have
some more reading to do. If there are any other Tampa Bay area
Rivendell owners on here please say hi.

I dont like being on non-drop bars for more than 30 miles or so, personally.
I did run a Jitensha bar for a little while...but they also hurt from the
lack of hand positions eventually.

I think I'd rather stretch regular and get more flexible than ride on
non-drops during a tour/brevet.

Re: [RBW] Cycling Breeks aka knickers

2011-05-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
At GB lb 110 for each pair of plus fours -- that's $183/pr is dollars.

You can get something as useful if not as elegant by simply cutting a
nice pair of wool trousers -- not flannel; good twill, say-- off,
hemming it and installing velcro straps. Or, a tailor can taper and
put a band with buttons at the hem.

As for the elastic: that's what I did with my Swobo knickers to make
them into plus fours: insert sturdy elastic into wide hem. But wool
will give you that Tintin look as stiff cotton won't.

[RBW] FS: Riv Custom 63.5 cm plus Campy Wheelset

2011-05-18 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi Everyone,

I have decided to part with my Riv Custom frame:

Here are links to the spec sheet and pic after it was repainted 2 years ago:

http://thesaltycyclist.blogspot.com/2009/07/rivendell-road-spec-sheet.html

http://thesaltycyclist.blogspot.com/2009/05/blog-post.html

The fork steer tube was replaced with a threadless steer tube when it was
repainted at Joe Bell's shop. The frameset will include the Chris King headset
and a Thompson Masterpiece silver seatpost, and a frame pump that was painted
to match.

The frame is in excellent shape. There a few nicks here and there which have
been touched up (most are in inconsicuous places). The frame is still a
stunner.

If you have questions, please ask. I'm asking $1200 plus shipping

Also:

Campy wheelset- Hugi 240 hubs laced to Mavic Open Pro (both hubs and rims are
silver) built by Joe Young. Excellent condition. -$250 plus shipping (less than
the cost of the hubs alone).

Thanks,

Joe

with a good-sized address label (handwritten, typed, or word

[RBW] Re: How to remove black anodizing from aluminum handlebars?

2011-05-18 Thread williwoods
I doubt that short (30minute) dips would do anything bad. I have never
had a problem with pitting even after an hour soaking in draino gel.
While I have never done handlebars, I have done chainrings, brake
levers, cranksets and frames, etc..never had a problem. I wouldn't
hesitate doing a handlebar myself. That is not to say that I am an
expert or that you shouldn't be careful. Oven cleaner is another
story, I have seen that eat at the surface of aluminum after an hour.
Wasn't pretty, and turned the part black (black came off if you
scrubbed it gently)

I have had discussions with smarter people than me about this stuff
and the consensus was that the draino gel isn't strong enough to cause
issues for the short durations we are soaking our parts. Still if its
your first time maybe try a junk part and see for yourself. I really
don't think its an issue, but am happy to be corrected by someone with
experience with this sort of thing.

A separate issue: I have never had a problem with the finish over a
long period of time due to oxidation, although I believe that is an
issue, maybe it doesn't show itself for 10 years or more. I just
haven't seen it pop up.

[RBW] Re: How to remove black anodizing from aluminum handlebars?

2011-05-18 Thread williwoods
One more point I should clarify in my instructions: when you dip the
part check on it every 10 minutes. you may find that you only need the
part in there for 20 minutes or even less before you pull it out to
rinse the first time, if you have scrubby brush you can scrub the part
gently and see the finish come off even while its soaking in the
draino, that will speed the process up a little. I am not sure how
even the finish will be if you can't dip the whole bar all at once,
but wouldn't be a big deal if your wrapping most of it in tape
eventually.

Cyclotourist - give us your report if you do your bars.

You can get something as useful if not as elegant by simply cutting a

hemming it and installing velcro straps. Or, a tailor can taper and
put a band with buttons at the hem.- Hide quoted text -

[RBW] Davinci splitters for cockpit swap

2011-05-18 Thread Zack
Hey All -

I have a Sam on the way, and am strongly considering trying to set up
the davinci splitters so that I would be able to swap between Noodles
and Albatrosses (Albabtri?). I am going with bar end shifters and
canti brakes.

I have heard varying reports on how difficult this is, and am
wondering if anyone that has done it can share some insight into
setting them up.

How long did it take?
How did you do it? (particularly, how did you account for the added
complexity of needing to cut the cables for the two different setups)
Where did you make your cuts in the cable?
Did you have cantilever brakes? Does it change how I would do things?

I would really appreciate some help/insight/instructions. I have
googled around and searched the groups, but most of what i have found
simply says it's awesome to do this and be able to swap cockpits but
haven't found anything that talks about how to actually do it. The
instructions I have found are all geared toward using the splitters
for the intended purpose of being a travel bike, so they aren't
concerned with the extra complexity of a different cockpit type.

Thank you in advance for weighing in and helping me (and maybe others)
out. Appreciate it.

meh - with the rest of the build - I dunno an hour or two of looking
at it and thinking a bit.

How did you do it?  (particularly, how did you account for the added

Where did you make your cuts in the cable?

setup one set of bars with just a full cable, get the bars right, get
the shifters/brakes right, etc.

then cut the shifter cables under the downtube in the lower bit somewhere
cut the rear brake cable in the middle of the toptube

then when you go to setup the second set of bars - just determine
where to cut the second based on where the rear part of the first one
comes up to.
remember to account for the room to thread the connector together.

give yourself about a cm or less of cheat-room on the cable and you'll be fine.

oh and buy a few extra cables just on the off chance you miss a few times. :)

Did you have cantilever brakes?  Does it change how I would do things?

yes cantilever - rear brake done with splitter. front brake done with
just the straddle cable carrier.

Hi Everyone,

I have decided to part with my Riv Custom frame:

Here are links to the spec sheet and pic after it was repainted 2 years ago:

http://thesaltycyclist.blogspot.com/2009/07/rivendell-road-spec-sheet.html

http://thesaltycyclist.blogspot.com/2009/05/blog-post.html

The fork steer tube was replaced with a threadless steer tube when it was
repainted at Joe Bell's shop. The frameset will include the Chris King headset
and a Thompson Masterpiece silver seatpost, and a frame pump that was painted
to match.

The frame is in excellent shape. There a few nicks here and there which have
been touched up (most are in inconsicuous places). The frame is still a
stunner.

If you have questions, please ask. I'm asking $1200 plus shipping

Also:

Campy wheelset- Hugi 240 hubs laced to Mavic Open Pro (both hubs and rims are
silver) built by Joe Young. Excellent condition. -$250 plus shipping (less than
the cost of the hubs alone).

[RBW] Re: Cycling Breeks aka knickers

Also found on the CTC list, this might interest those of you living in
rainy climes (I wouldn't have a great deal of use for one living in

This is a modern version of the much beloved Greenspot jacket often
worn by the CTC set. Obviously not cheap, but as the saying goes...
(You get what you pay for..).

Look under breeks and in special instructions
 specify they are for cycling.
