Re: [RBW] Re: Stem sizing for Albatross and Moustache bars

2011-07-02 Thread clyde canter
Shorter for the 'stach and longer for the 'tross, definately. I've tried
both and the only setup that felt good to me was the 'tach bars on a bike
that was too small, ie short top tube and an upjutting (40 deg) stem.
Problem there is getting them high enough. The tross bars came close on my
Hillborne, but there's something about those bars at speed that's
disconcerting for me. I'll borrow the term squirrley. That's a good
descriptor. The at speed part got me to thinking the albatross might be a
good bar for a fixed application. Hitting my top cadence in their upright
position was interesting to say the least. Also, I almost crashed when
reaching all the way down there for a bottle. All this has me fondly
remembering my more flexible lower back of years past. I now have my 48
noodles a whopping 2 1/2 to 3 inches above my saddle and that is my mostest
favoritest set up for everything. I should note that the only bikes I have
that will allow this are my Rivendells. Thanks Grant.
 High bars and fluffy tires,

I don't understand a damn thing you just said, but as to the question in the
subject line, my answer would be yes.

I've been using the Nitto 176 Dream bars on fire roads for the past 4 or 5
years. Haven't snapped yet (knock on wood). From what I understand, the 176
and 185 are basically the same materials/construction, just different reach
and drop dimensions. So the 185s should be fine for moderate off-road use.

[RBW] Re: Cross levers on 46cm Noodle bars?

2011-07-02 Thread William
I discovered interrupters in 1999 when I set up a cross bike for myself. It
was kind of an epiphany for me. I started setting them up on every bike of
mine. They just made sense to me. The reverse epiphany happened last
summer at Riv HQ. I was test riding a Hunqapillar with Noodles and SRAM 500
levers without interrupters. The action on those levers was so pure and
clean, I knew I wanted to reproduce it. I put those SRAM lever on my
Bombadil when I set up a drop bar cockpit, and it's awesome. I then removed
the interrupters on my go-fast, and radically improved the feel of the
brakelevers. So for me there was a trade-off. Interrupters were light,
cheap, and made sense, but no interrupters is light-er and cheap-er, and my
drop bar levers feel a lot better.

I don't understand how the feel of the brake lever would be any
different with or without the presence of interrupter levers. Nor do I
note any difference in lever feel between the various bikes I have with
and without interrupter levers, all of which have the exact same brake
levers.

Mos people mail order for this stuff since it is the rare LBS that stocks them.
However, any bike shop with an account with QBP (which is most bike shops) can

[RBW] Re: Stem sizing for Albatross and Moustache bars

2011-07-02 Thread rw1911
Thanks all for the feedback. It sounds like I would need a very short
stem 6-7cm for the M-bars and probably a 12 for the A-bars...

All this talk of instability at speed has me now questioning the
Albatross, which I was favoring. Perhaps I should consider a
straight(ish) bar or maybe something with a little more flexibility
like the Jitensha bar (which appears to be an abbreviated, somewhat
cross between the two)?

FWIW, I have the Noodles just about level with the saddle.

Thoughts?

good bar for a fixed application.  Hitting my top cadence in their upright
position was interesting to say the least. Also, I almost crashed when
reaching all the way down there for a bottle. All this has me fondly
remembering my more flexible lower back of years past.  I now have my 48

Re: [RBW] 650 vs. 650B

2011-07-02 Thread Horace
The problem isn't with the 650 part of the sizing. If you stick 650x18
tubes into 650x36 tires, yes, the tubes will seem thin.

Re: [RBW] 650 vs. 650B

2011-07-02 Thread Horace
650C and 650B are certainly close enough in diameter that you could use the
same tube; but most 650C tires are narrow racing tires, so that's probably
all the bike shop had. You probably want something like this:

http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/inner-tube-650b/10-066

But someone else also mentioned that you can use a 26 tube and that would
be pretty close too.

[RBW] Re: Where can I find Riv Baggins bags for sale?

2011-07-02 Thread grant
I'll bring this up once every 20 months or so, at most.

Frost River stole our designs and calls them their own. The guy there
is nice enough, but got desperate, and did this. He goofed up too many
bags in major ways, and was 3 months behind on delivery. We lent him
money, did all the right nice things, and he didn't respond in
kind, not at all.
I don't want anybody to scold him on our behalf. Please don't, I don't
want him to go out of business. I don't think we're selling any fewer
bags because of him...but why'd he have to do that.
I'd LIKE it (don't demand it, even if I could) if we-as-a-group don't
promote Frost River bags here.

The bags were fine, the fabric was fine---is fine---but the current
fabric (Sackville and Brand V) is truly the best fabric I've ever seen
for this kind of bag. It is drier to the hand---it don't pick up dirt
and get black. It's air-tight---probably 25 percent tighter than any
other fabric except Carradice, and is at least as tight as that. It is
far more waterproof than any Duluth or FR fab.

Those are nice bags, both, and I swore I wouldn't promote our products
on this free-for-all conversational/informational forum. But I can't
for the life of me understand the attraction to the older bags when
the newer bags are so groovy. The name? Baggins Bags? OK--hard to beat
that one!

Over and out and calm as a placid pool now.

[RBW] FS: Paul Components Cross Levers

2011-07-02 Thread ekoral
For sale is a pair of brand new Paul cross levers for drop bars. They
were only mounted, and maybe got 50 miles on them before I changed my
bars. They have a 26.0mm clamp, so they clamp to the sleeve or bump at
the center of the bars. They're quite beautiful, brushed sliver color
and also have the ability to be used with long pull or short pull
brakes (v-brakes or cantilever/caliper)

Check em out!

[RBW] Pics of my new Hunqapillar...and a question about handlebar bags

2011-07-02 Thread Geoff
Hi,

Summer is finally in full force, here in Northern California, and I've been
loving my new Hunqapillar! What a great bike! Thanks, Grant, and thanks,
Rivendell! When I first posted here about ordering my Hunq, I promised to
post some pics. I apologize, ahead of time, as I'm not a very good
photographer. But, here they are:

My new 2011 54cm
Hunqapillarhttp://ImageEvent.com/gyuenfamily/geoffs2011hunqapillar

I also have a question for my fellow Rivendell bike owners and fans,
regarding handlebar bags. I already have a Sackville Saddlesack(xsmall),
and its high quality and good looks really complement the Hunq. But I
realize that a nice fitting handlebar bag would be very convenient for quick
and easy access to stuff like snack bars, gu, cell phone, etc. The
challenge is that the vast majority of handlebar bags are designed to fit
handlebars with a straight section...something that my Nitto Bullmoose bar
doesn't have. Has anyone here with Bullmoose bars found a handlebar bag
that works well with it?

Thanks in advance!

Geoff

Hi Kelly,

Congrats on your beautiful Bombadil! Great pics, thanks for sharing them!
Seeing the conditions that you ride in is inspiring.

I've just posted pics of my new Hunqapillar, and they should be up before
long.

[RBW] Re: Stem sizing for Albatross and Moustache bars

2011-07-02 Thread charlie
Not necessarily that short but tall..way tall so that the grip
area is level or higher than the saddle. Due to the head tube angle
going higher also brings the bar back toward you so don't get too
extreme just use some common sense. As far as the 'instability' idea
that's just an idea (actually more like an interpretation) my word was
squirrely and what I meant by that is that it put my weight too far
back making the front end light which made me less confident. I don't
use a front rack or load the front end heavily and I am heavy in the
gut so too much rearward weight distribution made my bike (not a
Rivendell) feel light in the front end. I prefer more equal weight
distribution in regard to riding position and that depends on several
things. I would personally not use any straight bar and prefer a bar
with a handshake position option of the hand on the bar. My favorite
bar however is the Nitto Randonneur bar. This is a narrow bar with
the hoods being only 36cm wide but I like it and it helps me now with
my shoulder being injured after crashing on the ice. My drop bars
Rando and Noodle (two different bikes) are both several cm above
saddle height and that works for me YMMV. What works for any rider
depends on their anatomyI have short arms relative to my leg
length so I take that into account whereas a long arm and torso but
short legged rider might have a completely different comfort position.
