[RBW] Re: Interesting refutation of Gary Taubes' obesity ideas
I can dig it Scott.and I have to tell you I have been inspired by your determination. Your willingness to keep at it day after day, especially while enduring the negative and sometimes even smug comments from others. I know what gets me fat and I know when I'm weak. I've been enduring the comments at work for months now and I have had to leave the lunch room at times because I'm having a bad day and I just want to say 'F' it and take that one piece of somebodies birthday cake or join in at the potluck. That's the psychological part that gets to me and it is lonely (sometimes) making choices that others don't get and can't or won't understand. Sometimes I think they want you to stay fathere try this, just one little bite, it won't hurt you just do it in moderation, everything in moderation (love that) but its B.S...mostly though its been good and I don't crave things too often when I stick to 'my food '. My wife is a real creative cook and is doing this with me and makes me eat my veggies, even the yucky ones. She's definitely not an enabler in a bad way, thank God. My first 24 pounds was with no exercise amazingly and my next goal is to incorporate some cycling because I love it and some weights which I actually did pretty hardcore for nine years in my twenties. As an aside, I managed the 23 mile commute to work in 1 hr and 18 minutes. That's some pretty hardcore traffic jamming for me on my 30+ pound touring bike. It burns calories but its not why I ride. I like getting somewhere under my own power and I like the way it makes me feel when I ride. What I am eating and what I am not eating is what has been making the biggest difference. Its rather annoying to read comments sometimes from folks that (presumably) are not battling the problem and I don't mean 20 pounds of winter fat I'm talking a lifetime of obesity. Think of it in the reverse..picture a super skinny guy who can't put on muscle no matter how much he eats and exercises and if he does manage to gain a few pounds as soon as he stops, he loses the added muscle and becomes the 98 pound weakling again. I would defy anyone to strap on 100, 200 maybe as much as 400 pounds on their body and just try to walk up a hill...the heavy people who exercise put out a whole lot more effort than any 160 pound man merrily spinning away on his bicycle. Re: [RBW] Re: It doesn't look bad without fenders, no?
It should work fine. The problem with the angle of mine results from a hack to remove the crown mounting tongue from between fender and crown (for more tire clearance) and shortening and bending and drilling it for the caliper mounting bolt. I got the tongue a bit too short. As for fenders, once I did this I had no problem with rub on the Kojaks; it was the rear that rubbed, and only on the sides. Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting refutation of Gary Taubes' obesity ideas
A man at our church was hugely obese, probably 400 lb at about 6', for years until he told himself, eat less and be more active. I think he just took daily walks on a strict high veg diet. He dropped an amazing amount of weight, in under 2 years, to about 200. OTOH, there is the rather well known instance of women in traditional, well to do Somali circles being sent at marriageable age to special spas where they are fed large amounts of fattening porridge to make them fat and more beautiful. My point in saying this is to say that I expect that Taube is right at least as far as that some people, and peoples, are genetically more inclined to be heavy; but on the other hand, that overeating and under eating do cause weight gain and weight loss for some. [RBW] FS: 60cm Rivendell Quickbeam in Orange
hi all im selling my quickbeam. every bike has a story and heres is this ones. at some point in in its life it has had a schlumpf crankset installed. this requires a modification of the bb shell edge. a 45 chamfer is cut into the edge of each side o fthe bottom bracket. this edge is for the schlumpf bb to bite into. as it relates to normal non-schlumpf cranks, you must use a bb with a tall flange on the drive side.one that sticksk out past the ouotside radius of the bb. alternately you could use a phil wood style bb that has 2 seperate retaining rings. this quickbeam has neither. just a regular shimano from the lbs. it does not have the high flange and goes in a little more than normal on the drive side. consequently it doesnt go in as far on th eother side. i have ridden this bike for a year in 40x16, 40x14fixed, 32x16, and 32x14 fixed with no problems whatsoever. nitpickers will fix it, those who arent wont. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EY2Q-Eht350/TlhbGFkYKSI/AAU/oeucgVMNV-k/red%252520nikon%252520pics%252520129.jpg also, at some point in time something has dented the down tube ever so slightly. i mean just barely. right above the water bottle, as seen in the photo. parts are: original wheelset- araya rims and the cool suzue free/free high flange hubs. currently has 14t cog and 16t freewheel. panaracer pasela 700x35 nitto tech dlx 10cm aluminum albatross bars cork grips old shimano mtn levers shimano cantilever brakes sugino 40x32 quickbeam crank crystal fellow seatpost i would like $1200. buyer pays paypal fees and shipping to the conus only. thanks for your time joe rex kelly -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Interesting refutation of Gary Taubes' obesity ideas
With the variety of people and eating habits exercise habits success and failures with fat-gain/loss, it is easy and normal for the discussion to lapse into we're all different, because in so many obvious ways we ARE that. The hope that Taubes offers is based on how we're all similar...and evolution has seen to it that in many ways, we are all similar. One way is that excess insulin, in all of us, makes us gain weight. What constitutes excess for you might not be excess for me, and that's where some honest-to-goodness differences come in. Different ethnicities tend to respond differently to sugar and insulin, and a reasonable explanation is that their ancestors have had more time to adapt to it. Israelies tend to be insulin-sensitive, TEND to tolerate carbs better than...most Native Americans (who got agriculture late) do. (You WANT to be insulin-sensitive...it means you produce less insulin in response to high blood glucose, because a little insulin does a lot) Insulin-resistance may not be the only thing that leads to fat gain, but it is certainly a key factor for many. Insulin resistance can start in the womb (as Taubes notes...let me make it clear that I am reiterating, not making this up and not speaking from knowledge gained in the lab). Obese women (who are insulin-resistant) can pass on their insulin-resistance to the gestating baby, making it easier for the baby to become overweight as an adult. Exercise helps weight loss not because it burns calories, but because muscle is more insulin-sensitive than fat. Calorie restricted diets help weight loss because they reduce your carb loadso while the calories are cut back some, the carbs are cut back hugely. You can count the pre- and post- calories or carbs, and see the diff. Most people attribute the loss to the cut in calories, when there's plenty evidence that it's the carbcut that should get the credit. One quick story, then I'm outa this (interesting) thread. Robert Bailey, the Riv-guy who got his legs chopped off by the tractorish thing, was gaining weight and getting fat and not (as you can imagine) getting a lot of exercise. In the last 6 months or so, he's lost 50 pounds. He has 25 more to go. His 50 pound loss cannot be the result of burning off the excess calories through exercise, because (although he recently completed RAGBRAI), he is not, by any standards, a vigorous/hard exerciser. He says he cut way back on carbs. It's not EASY, but restricting carbs offers hope based on science. Losing weight by overexercising and undereating has a lousy success record. Although I have never been (by most standards) overweight, I have the normal adult male concerns and struggles, and my own standard---which, I understand---does not win me much sympathy, when I feel fat when I don't look it. But we ALL have a standard, and most of us are keen to our own bellies. For me, the only way the unsympathy-engendering amount of fat comes off is by not eating grains. If you can do it by exercising hard and long, and will power, and calorie restriction--- and you can maintain that without feeling like the fat-wolf is at the door---that's great. If it doesn't work for you, read the Red book and get inspired by the science of fat accumulation. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: My first S24O
I can't remember which bag it actually is - what is the difference between the mini bar and the kevens? It looks to me like a kevens bag, so that's why I call it that. Purchased it a few years ago when it was on sale I think. The use of the bag was definitely one thing that I learned - it's nice to have an easy place to grab stuff out of the bars when riding (snacks, wallet, phone, and camera, which I will indeed take out of the bag more next time). The slickersack would benefit from a little zippy pocket on the part of the bag that faces the rider I think. As it is, the addition of that bag on the handlebars on my setup was nice. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: What Bags work with Nitto F-15 Bar Sack Bag Rack?
Wouldn't be a handlebar bag if it required mounting to a low rack now would it? I have the barsack/f15 combo and think it is the bee's knees, I love the magnet closure and the way I can get into the bag while still riding. I used to use an Arkel handlebar bag which worked fine, didn't really love the mounting on it (it is a unique proprietary mounting system) and it was all red (I prefer the olive/leather color of the Sackville bag), so I prefer the new setup. I don't take the bag off at all, just keep it on the Sam at all times, and in that respect the barsack is great. Nobody is going to walk off with it unless they have a screwdriver and a little time. I generally ride the Sam with my tools, tubes, pump ect in a XS Saddlesack and keep food/windbreaker/sunglasses/camera/cell phone/paperback book and wallet in the handlebar bag. [RBW] Orange 66cm Quickbeam for sale
Adding another bike to the for sale list... I posted on the list earlier this spring, to try to sell this bike. But it didn't end up working out. Clearly. I wanted to lower the price, and try again. A little bit about it: I bought it in the fall of 2008. It was one of the floor models at Rivendell, and I bought it built there. The only change I've made is attaching a fixed gear, making the rear hub fixed/free. I've had it here in Omaha. NE since then. I don't ride it with snow on the ground, and I've kept it mostly indoors. Otherwise in the garage. I have another bike I use to ride around town, so I haven't ridden the Quickbeam as much as it should be ridden. [RBW] shorty striped socks or similar
Does anyone have a source for the shorty striped socks that rivbike used to carry or any recommendations if not? The shorty's were thick(ish), cozy and soft, and I think wool or a blend of wool. Probably not so silly, if you think about why someone would want such a thing. To move bulky, heavy items short distances? Tim, I use the interrupter brakes on my noodle bars and have found that rolling the mat up and sticking it crosswise through both drops of the h'bars works well. [RBW] FS: Nitto made Softride Suspension Stem from MB-1
I have a Nitto made Softride suspension stem from a 1994 MB-1. It is in very good condition. It appears that on ebay the going rate for these is $80-$100. I will take $75 shipped for it. Perfect for restoring a Bridgestone MB or just to get a softer ride. It does work very well. 22.2 I also have the original Nitto straight bar. [RBW] Re: Question about the World's Best straddle wire hanger (Tektro CR720)
My take: I think these are indeed the best straddle hangers out there. Here's why. You position the hanger for optimum/even pull from both brake calipers, then you set the screws and secure the straddle wire so the hanger remains perfectly positioned; without it the hanger can float and eventually the pull on the calipers will become uneven. I use the philips head screw just to hold the straddle wire in place (in the hanger) enough to unhook it from the caliper and to tighten the allen bolts (which generally DO require unhooking the straddle wire to get an allen key on the bolts, particularly with a rear rack). SO, the allen heads make perfect sense to me, to hold the straddle hanger in place after setting it up to pull evenly. The philips head holds the cable in place while you disconnect the hanger wire, enabling you to then set the allen bolts. Beautifully designed... [RBW] Re: Carrying yoga mat on your Rivendell?
If lashed to a saddle bag the long slender weight of the mat will likely put too much torque on the leather straps and the whole thing will sway too much, at least in my experience. For short trips you can lay or strap it on the top of the drops behind the hoods as well. If using a mat it is my thick heavy Munduka, and requires a pretty solid lashing as well as the fact that it is kind of bulky for sling cary. Lashed to my bagman as previously posted works well, but it can also be lashed longways to any rack. Paniers work well too, just leave it sticking out of the top. Where ther is a will there will be a way. [RBW] Re: Question about the World's Best straddle wire hanger (Tektro CR720)
The argument that the Tektro hanger is the best...is a funny argument at some level, because any decent one from the pas 70 years is 98 percent as good as any other, including this. The Tektro *wins*--my opinion--the final 2 unimportant percent, because if for any reason (can think of two offhand) your cantilevers aren't opening evenly, then the set-screws allow you to shift the hanger off-center and keep it there to compensate. It is a nice-looking hanger, in any case. Tektro is a neat company. They don't wait, they don't copy, they know brakes and they innovate. They made the long-reach sidepulls (Silver and R556) when Shimano wouldn't even respond to the inquiry, and neither did Dia-Compe. Tektro listened, understood, and DID it---and figured out the wide-opening q/r that we requested. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
