He's well known in motorcycle circles, too; wrote for a free monthly
motorcycle paper, City Bike, out of San Francisco for many years (I haven't
seen one in a while). He has a downbeat style of writing that fit the paper
well, but seemed a little off in the Readers. His last couple Reader pieces
about aging, and aggressive drivers, were more "down" than most. It was
clear that several forces coalesced at the same time in Tucson to create a
less than lovely moment in his life.

Doing a overnight trip with my BoyScout troop the Friday to Saturday, most
likely going to miss the Rivendell Garage sale. Might make the ride if it's

Diablo is nice and close. Maybe dirt riding back down?
Any suggestions?

I actually laughed out loud at that Kelly.

As per Grant's comments,
One day there will be a party that is fiscally conservative but not
antedeluvian. Until that day I'll be voting democrat pretty exclusively. How
does that affect which companies I purchase from? I'm not sure. I still don't
buy from Nike because they pretty much led the slave labor movement. I'm sure I
have other examples. If Grant had said he was happy Bush won (specially the
first time) I'd probably not have given it a second thought.

2012-11-07 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Yes, back in the 70s they were planning to build the (ill-fated) Tocks Dam
and create a massive reservoir/recreational area. It thankfully never
happened, and in the mean time the Dept of the Interior had bought up all
the cabins/houses within the reservoir's planned 'footprint', forcing
people to move from the area. To this day it's still very remote (and
virtually abandoned) thanks to the displacement of all those people as a
result of the Tocks Dam project.

On the Jersey side is Buttermilk Falls, a beautiful cascade in the woods,
that sits on one of the dirt roads in the Water Gap Recreational Area.

I will begin planning this... perhaps for April?

Peace,
Bobby

Re: [RBW] Tokyo Cycle Show ( Picture Set )

2012-11-07 Thread Tokyo Crank

Not my bike pictured but it's an Alps I found on the web with the same
design. The mudguard is a standard Honjo type, cut in half just aft of the
brake bridge. A rectangular metal tab is affixed to the front half of the
mudguard, using the same nut that holds it onto the bridge. This is never
moved. The remaining half of the metal tab pokes out, and has a threaded
hole. In the picture, you can see that the rear mudguard has been removed
and the locknut replaced for safekeeping. The locknut has a leather washer
to prevent rattles and metal fatigue :

The only other attachment point for the rear half of the mudguard are the
stays. The dropouts are standard but the mudguard stays are attached with
spring-loaded bolts. These just need a push, and the stays are released :

A small picture set is here http://flic.kr/s/aHsjCKQBcy

Apologies for not taking my own pictures and to the originator of these
pics.

I should add that after a couple of years, the spring in the push-release
bolts on the dropouts became loose. The resulting noise was painful, so I
asked Hagiwara-san ( of Alps ) for advice. He gave me some standard,
Philips-head bolts to replace the spring loaded ones. No further issues.
The allen key I carry that fits my brakes has a Philips screwdriver on the
other end, so it's no extra bother, and I value the silence !

The "Easy Rinkou" by Grand Bois shown at Cyclemode 2012, from the original
photo set, has a similar design to the Alps, though it appeared to be more
machined.

2012-11-07 Thread Peter Morgano
Again, an issue with politics nowadays is the arguing of facts. I believe
Richard Nixon and the Southern Strategy was not in the 80s, but then again
I do have a degree in Political Science from University of South Carolina
so maybe they led me astray. But dont trust me, trust our find friends at
Wikipedia, or have they been infected by the liberal media?

"The passage of the Civil Rights Act of
1964was the
event that finally moved the majority of Southern states to the
Republican Party. From the end of the Civil War to 1960 Democrats had solid
control over the southern states in presidential elections, hence the
term "Solid
South " to describe the states'
Democratic preference. After the passage of this act however their support
on a presidential level shifted to the Republicans"

Re: [RBW] Re: Wood

2012-11-07 Thread Steve Palincsar
Back in the 70s they were saying they were going to let Old Mine Road
"go back to nature". I remember it as being exceptionally nice. I
think I recall us crossing the river into PA and going up to some falls
-- Silverthread, perhaps? -- on the ride. Details, of course, are long
gone, as it was 40 years ago, but some 20 years later on a drive up to
NY we went on PA 209? and stopped and walked up one of those side roads
to see some falls. It was January, I think, bitterly cold, and
everything was frozen, stalactites and stalagmites of ice everywhere.
Just breathtaking.

And speaking of which, a few years ago we did a tour from Front Royal
VA, 4 days self supported, that stopped at and visited Luray Caverns and
Shenandoah Caverns. It's an excellent tour.
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2078
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2079
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2077
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2076

The only thing I'd modify on these routes is to use a dirt road rather
than the paved road that goes by some large resort on day 2 or 3. The
paved road was \/\/\/\ and we got stuck into a huge exodus of traffic
from the resort, which was most unpleasant.

You set up a Delaware Water Gap tour and I'm definitely in. I'll bet
Joan would be in as well. She's resisted the Riv Rallies for a couple
of years but has now decided she's in for them, too.

Virginia went Democratic in both the Presidential and Senatorial

Mayoral election and all the City Council spots.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wood

2012-11-07 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Steve:

The Delaware Water Gap actually is a great choice for a 2-day ride,
light-touring credit card style. I did it one weekend 2 years ago, where
we started at the Water Gap (on the PA side), rode across the Rte 80 bridge
to NJ, then up the historic Old Mine Road to Milford PA along the Delaware,
which is a rolling combo of very rural rough pavement and dirt roads (about
40+ miles in total for Day 1). We spent the night in Milford PA (where
there are plenty of B&Bs and Inns). Day 2 we rode back into NJ, and up
through High Point and Stokes State Forest, before jumping on the Sussex
and Paulinskill rail-trails (which are mostly dirt, some gravel and
virtually no pavement). The Paulinskil is very pretty (largely used by the
equestrian community), and brings you all the way back down to the Water
Gap. The 2-day total distance is roughly 90 miles, and it's definitely a
worthy ride with very little traffic. This really highlights some of NJ's
hidden beauty.

Whether we also do a Virginia location for the May Riv Rally, I'd be glad
to host a Water Gap ride in the Spring. Definitely an excellent (and
challenging) ride with beautiful scenery. Thanks for suggesting it.

Peace,
Bobby

French camping bikes, I've seen the term 'campeur' used too, had that sort

it is possible that there was some influence.

Re: [RBW] Cygolite mounting questions

2012-11-07 Thread Kerry Kunsman

John,

If you want to mount with mid-fork braze-ons I think you already
received some good suggestions. If, like me, you don't have a
braze-on where you want the light, I have tried a couple of clamp-on
types. If you can find them the old style, round, tandem "Stoker
Stubs" work good. The other thing I've used with good success is the
Minoura Besso
LH-50.
.
Unfortunately, it looks like Minoura is discontinuing these. Two
other options I found were the Profile AirStryke Computer Mount, and
the ISSIMO Nob XL. These might work for a generator light, but I
didn't feel they were strong enough to be dependable, especially if
you have a light with the extra weight of an internal battery.

2012-11-07 Thread Peter Morgano
That is true but sadly most people just watch the network that they watch
and that is thier source of information. I do love the rise of independent
media on the web, gives way different perspectives than you would ever get
on the mainstream media. I am obviously a liberal but try to not just limit
myself to their media sources and I try to take a good look at the issues
and don't just block vote. For instance I live in NY and did not vote for
Cuomo since I find him repulsive but did not vote for the conservative
lunatic either, there were better 3rd party candidates on the ballot.

2012-11-07 Thread Peter Morgano
Be that as it may, the thing I hate the most about the media is the false
equivalency that is measured against all politics. In some cases one guy or
party or belief is just wrong, and we live in such a PC society that no one
in the media can just come out and say it. When you watch old news casts
from the civil rights era or Vietnam war news people were not afraid to say
what they thought, they actually had passion and weren't trying to sell
"infotainment" to the masses. I agree that politicians need to work
together but to say "both sides are at fault all the time" makes it worse,
not better.

the reason the two parties worked together when Grant and I were kids was
because there were four parties. North/south democrats, and east/west
republicans. Coalitions would form over issues of common interest between
the four regions and two parties. Ending in the 70s, people changed
parties and polarized, so now, it's the major urban centers against the
rest of the nation - if you look at last night's EC map, it will show you
that. The parties will not work together as long as each side keeps
fear-mongering the beliefs of the other. The media feeds on that
fear-mongering, because they must spin every news story to last 360 hours.

Oy, a political conversation breaking out on a bicycle discussion page,
nothing good can come of this. Thankfully the fine people at Rivendell

Lets at least not tell people what they believe or quote things in such

Re: [RBW] Tokyo Cycle Show ( Picture Set )

2012-11-07 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks, Paul. I used a 46/26 TA Pro 5 Vis for a while off road, then
switched to 44/30 (home brew 14 or so -34 9 speed) for faster shifting and
a slightly lower range on the big ring, but the SunTour shifter shifted the
larger gap fine, if a bit slower. I ran the rings on the inner two
postions, largely because of chainstay requirements, but it also had the
happy result of letting me use a shaped triple fd.

Can I persuade you to give us in words and pictures the details of the
quick-release fender portion? One annoying thing about fenders is how they
interfere with stuffing a bike into the back of a small motor vehicle. Your
arrangement may be a solution.

in bikes made the dude feel chummy with GP, and that initial chumminess made
the "betrayal" on political philosophy even more profound.

My shop is in a blue-collar area of South Minneapolis, which is a pretty
diverse place. I've learned a lot about people, but the most useful thing I've
learned is that a common interest in bikes does not mean two cyclists have
ANYTHING else in common.

Oh yeah. I walked to my poll twice (registration issues), but only voted once.

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-07 Thread islaysteve
Grant, I echo your sentiments. I'm a "displaced" Californian, but I'm
fortunate to live in Maryland where I was able to vote for marriage
equality, among other good things. The results were pretty much the same
as my ballot all around, so I'm happy here too. Thanks for sharing, don't
worry about that guy, and enjoy the California weather. Steve

2012-11-07 Thread Eric Platt
We did not ride to the polls after work today. A combination of a later
time off work, light drizzle in the low 40's and more traffic made me
decide to just keep driving the carpool to the polling station after work.

Re: [RBW] Tokyo Cycle Show ( Picture Set )

2012-11-07 Thread Tokyo Crank
Doug

The cassette is an Ultegra 12x27. The rear derailleur, to anticipate a
question, is the long cage Dura Ace 7700GS. The original tyres were Mitsuboshi
Trimlines. It is currently wearing Michelin World Tour 650 x 35A. Could only
find an ancient review of these online, where I believe they were memorably
described as "pitiful". They are certainly sturdier than the Mitsuboshis, but
although I may have felt they weren't as fleet as foot at first ride, I suspect
it was psychological : I'm not any slower. They were a $&¥£€%##^ nightmare to
fit on the rims, but once on, I have no complaints. No punctures, no dramas,
and tread still looking good after 2 and 1/2 years use. World Tour indeed.

The sanity of all mail in voting... I heard King Count was expected to get 86%
turnout.

The whole vote by mail thing was championed and put together by my favorite
Wasington republican Sam Reed. My ballot was so sad and one-party without him
in there.

I spent election day building up my new to me Ram. Had trouble with the metal
fenders and front rack so I took the vo rack back and ordered a Mark's rack.
Hope it works!
