[RBW] Re: Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?

2012-11-25 Thread Matthew J
Another consideration is where the savings on the lower priced options
derive.

Traditional leather tanning uses organic compounds that used properly do
not pollute the environment or harm the people tanning the leather.
Organic compounds cost more to obtain. Implementation is more labor
intensive and takes more time.

Modern chemicals and methods are available. Most likely the leather in
less expensive saddles come from modern factories. Leather tanning
factories in China (source of almost all lower cost leather tanning) are
notorious for the pollution they spew in a country where pollution is
generally accepted. Who knows about the long term health of the workers.

Re: [RBW] Lock question

2012-11-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Pitlocks are pretty easy to defeat. A downward whack with a blunt object will
knock them out of the dropout. Hopefully you didn't file off those lawyer
lips.

Of course, all locks are defeatable if you have the right tool and know how.

Personally, I think the best strategy is to use a decent lock (or 2, if I'm
nervous) and park my bike in a thoughtful way - never leave it in the same
place too long or at the same place/time everyday, and bring it inside with me
when possible. Also I don't go to NYC. If I do those things and my bike still
gets stolen, that's amazingly bad luck. But life goes on, it's just a bike.

[RBW] Re: Fenders and Rams

2012-11-25 Thread Leslie
Correct: the 539's are updated 538's, that have a bit of a lock on the
quick-release on the caliper.

I just switched my 538's for a set of 559's from RBW, so that I could
switch to 650b's on my Ram as an experiment.

But you're right, most important is, ride it and enjoy

fine. I'm getting an extra 5 mm of clearance by getting the p45s and the
new brakes are known to work just fine with them. I might get sheldon's

I can't wait to ride this bike into the ground!

[RBW] Re: Stem sizing question

2012-11-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I believe in trial and error, and starting with what you have. If you're set on
the Alba/Oxford, it won't cost as much to try it with the stem you have. Of
course you'll need a shim - I'm so glad the 26.0 handlebar standard is
(nearly) dead.

Try with the stem you have and then you'll have a better idea on how much
change you need out of your new stem.

Of course, a cheapie Kalloy dirt drop style quill stem isn't much more than a
Nitto handlebar shim. The Kalloy stem only comes in 100 mm, which simplifies
things.0

I found the following 3 saddles in the hoard:

1. New B17 - $80 plus shipping - bought several years back, hasn't been
mounted, uses copper rivets, has thick leather.

2. Used B17 Special - $60 plus shipping - Rode it for ~1k miles on my Bleriot,
thick leather, some scrapes on back.

3. Used B17 - $30 plus shipping - Purchased used online, broken in, likely has
several thousand remaining miles.

Planning to use USPS flat rate boxes and will only ship domestically shipping
should be $12.

Re: [RBW] OT FS - Three Brooks B17 Saddles

Item #3 is sold

B17's don't work for me. I've switched to Brooks Swift saddles as I seem to

The recent discussion of Brooks saddle reminded me (and my sponsor) that I
still need to address my hoarding problem of Rivendell bicycles and related
 components:

I found the following 3 saddles in the hoard:

 1. New B17 - $80 plus shipping - bought several years back, hasn't been
mounted, uses copper rivets, has thick leather.

 2. Used B17 Special - $60 plus shipping - Rode it for ~1k miles on my
Bleriot, thick leather, some scrapes on back.

 3. Used B17 - $30 plus shipping - Purchased used online, broken in, likely
 has several thousand remaining miles.

Planning to use USPS flat rate boxes and will only ship domestically shipping
 should be $12.

Oh, the USPS www site is something to behold. Doesn't give one confidence
 that they can survive.

[RBW] Re: Happy Thanksgiving...oops!

2012-11-25 Thread rob markwardt
I'm fine...and embarrassed to admit that I crashed again the very next
day, in the very same manner. Going down hill on a slick trail the
front tire slips out and I face plant into the mud. I was wearing
tights and a rain jacket the next day so it didn't look quite as
messy. I didn't tempt fate today. The sun was out today but I stuck
to the roads anyway.

Re: [RBW] Re: Stem sizing question

2012-11-25 Thread Minh
I also use noodles with an 80mm stem. Brass right at seat height and would
describe the fit the same way, just about right. On my quick beam with Albas I
use a 110 stem and they are just about perfect.
