Here's the bike with the fattys on it.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7267/6860650144_3fd1cbb6d8_c.jpg That's a beautiful bike for sure! Nice metallic color. I'm a fan of Fizik Microtex bartape, usually over their gel pads and there are a couple of metallic colors that would look fantastic on that bike. Try the metal red or blue, or maybe the light blue. [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
I always felt they kinda missed the boat with the Bombadil. Originally I figured it would just be a slightly altered version of the Bridgestone MB, maybe with more braze-ons and heavy duty tubing. The TT lengths seemed exceptionally long for the given sizes and the clearances didn't seem to be as wide as they should be. The extra tubes seemed odd at first but now I'm fine with them. The Hunqa seems a better thought out bike in terms of sizing and clearances. I realize a lot of this is subjective. All that said, about 2 yrs ago I was close to pulling the trigger on a Hunqa, had the funds and green light from my wife, but instead went with an LHT. I've been happy with the LHT but there are times I wish I had gone with the Hunqa... --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
LHT is perfectly functional bike, very well balanced, but not the lugged goodness of the Hunq. I dont think the Bombadil was ever intended as a DH or all terrain bike especialy since its a fully rigid frame and all but more of a rough stuff bike. It is strange that the clearances werent at least in the high 50s but for my usage its great. I do still have my MB2 however if I ever want to go all MTBing, which the older I get is less appealing. [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
They killed the Bomba with the Hunq really. With a $500 difference between it and a full custom, why not just get the custom and tweak it exactly as you want ? BTW ... the TT really isn't that long. The Hunq TT is even longer, at least comparing the 60cm Bomba to the 62cm Hunq. The specs page was incorrect, according to what Keven told me.Either way the TT's are perfect for upright bars, where you need a longer TT and stem . The original Atlantis frame had a longer TT than the current ones, they should have kept it as it was :) All that said, they could have kept the Bomba as a production bike . It started out at just over $1000, then just skyrocketed to 3K. Head scratching lol. Just saw the note. It is good that they are keeping it on a limited basis, I think it is a cool bike. [RBW] Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
Don't know if Grant and Co. will ever produce a tandem, so in the meantime will be getting one elsewhere. Seems like most tandems out there follow the skinny tire theme, with the exception of R+E in Seattle and Bilenky in Philadelphia, and even their tire clearances don't seem to push as far north as nearly all Riv singles. So wondering if there are any tandem riders here and what tire widths they prefer. On my Sam I ride 33/35mm tires often on marginal roads. [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
LHT wouldn't really be ideal for what I would want a Bombadil for, which would be a singletrack trailriding bike. I asked Brian a few months ago (before I ordered the Roadeo) about getting either a Hunq or Bomb. He said he rides his Hunq all over the trails and it does great. I may go that route when I get the money to get another Riv. I may just save up for a custom mountain mixte in 650b though. That would rock. Re: [RBW] Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
I much prefer wider tires - our current Bushnell is running 26x1.5s - but that's nothing compared to how much my dear stoker prefers the wider tires. The real issue is having it designed to actually play well with those wider tires - just increasing the width on a bike designed for 25c tires whacks the handling. -Ken On Thu, Feb 7, 2013 at 12:53 AM, Salween owen%livingrivers@gtempaccount.com wrote: Don't know if Grant and Co. will ever produce a tandem, so in the meantime will be getting one elsewhere. Re: [RBW] Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
Anne and I have a Co-motion Mocha, a model built with road geometry and 26 wheels. We run Panaracer Pasela 1.75 on everything from pavement to mild singletrack and they work great. There's room for slightly bigger tires or fenders--it's not built with tons of clearance but it ain't bad. CoMotion's experience with twofers really shows-it rides and handles a lot nicer than the old Cannondale MTB tandem we had. If you want fat tires, maybe a disc braked, 700c model would make for a good 650b conversion? It's an idea I've toyed with... [RBW] Re: Thinking of changing up the All Rounder - or spring fever??
Now, that's a Rivendell. I wouldn't change a damn thing - totally dialed in. Woodchippers would give you more drop, but if you find the Moustache bars acceptable, they provide many more hand positions. With drop bar MTB bars, you're in the hooks almost exclusively. RE: [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
Nah, the Bombadil ain't the MB, and I don't think of it as a road bike OR a mountain bike...it simply ain't like any other bike... True of a lot of Rivendells, it seems to me. Bomba, for sure. The (I-hope-still-on-the-horizon) Appaloosa, for sure. Quickbeam, for sure. But even the more conventional Riv bikes are in important ways different from (and for me, better) than their genre and sub-genre counterparts. [RBW] Re: Thinking of changing up the All Rounder - or spring fever??
I'm with Esteban-- I love how the All-Rounder looks with Moustache bars. If you're comfortable on them now, I'd say keep 'em. Consider yourself lucky--a lot of people just don't find them comfortable. Woodchippers are cool bars for the right bike (something like a Salsa Fargo, Singular Gryphon, or custom Matt Chester drop bar fixed gear monstercrosser) but aesthetically I find them a bit weird, they don't jive with the classic level TT design of an early Riv. In any case, as others have pointed out, it can be difficult to get them to play well with certain quill stems. On Thursday, February 7, 2013 8:57:35 AM UTC-8, Esteban wrote: Now, that's a Rivendell. [RBW] Re: Twin Hollow odd rim well performance question (the rim, not the question, ha ha!).
Actually, this is a fairly common design for single-wall rims. With such rims, you don't need rim tape that goes from wall to wall, just one that is wide enough to go between the two hollows and cover the spoke heads. That provides a somewhat even platform, but in any case I doubt it has any significant effect on tire performance. Tubes are flexible enough that they fill pretty much any space without any problems or change in feel, for a given tire pressure. As far as I know, the only rim parameter that does change how a tire will feel is rim width, as this changes the profile of the tire significantly. Well, a typical single-wall rim is lighter and flexier than a typical double-wall rim. For all the talk about frame flex, planing, etc, not to mention tire weight and suppleness, perhaps something could be said for a similar batch of effects from flexy single wall rims. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Sadly my Ibis Touche won't take much wider than a Jack Brown. I have Jack Browns on there now, and a set of 35mm Paselas in the stash. If I could wave my magic wand at the rear triangle to make room for 45mm tires, I would. The fork is ready to take fatties. I guess all I need is to move the bridges and squish the chainstays, which is a maneuver any number of framebuilders could execute for me. [RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
We like Pasela Tourguard 700 x 32s for most of our tandeming. Our old Co-Motion Speedster from 2006 accepted those tires with fenders but not 35s. To run bigger tires we recently upgraded to modified Co-Motion Java. They changed it a couple of years ago from a 26/559 wheel model to 700c/29er. Rides great with the same 700 x 32s, but can take up to 700 x 50mm+ if we wish. Co-Motion bills the Java as a touring/offroad tandem. We added a lateral tube to stiffen the frame some more, though Dwan said the Java is already stiffer than the Speedster. The ride is still pretty nice, and it doesn't flex as much when we stand up. [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
The Bridgestone MBs weren't designed around suspension forks. I had an MB2 for years with a Softride suspension stem which was great. I never expected the Bombadil to be a bike for a suspension fork, just expected it to be different than what was released. I liked the original prototype that was posted in one of the RRs. As for clearance, I seem to remember that it couldn't handle a 2.25 tire. Perhaps I'm wrong. It just seems if you were gonna make a mountain bike you'd want it to be able to handle a tire that size with clearance for mud. And yeah, as I said, the sizing stuff is somewhat subjective. The Hunqapillar works better for me than the Bombadil, especially for running drop bars. [RBW] JBK Haleiwa Metric Century 2013
Aloha all... I'll be riding in the JBK Haleiwa Metric Century again this year at the end of April. For those who may not know it's a ride around the north shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The route is generally lovely, mostly flat, and one of my favorite places to ride - I do it fairly often without the whole group thing. Thing is, I got to chatting with a friend and now he wants to do it and is probably going to ride his fixie (not a Rivendell but he's getting closer and closer, his fixie now has a basket). I've ridden the route (with and without the whole group bit) many times on my Quickbeam, my Bike Friday NWT, and never on my Hunqapillar (though I've done other long rides on it). If I ride the QB I'll more or less match my friend. If I ride my BF I can say I'm working out the bugs for my second RAGBRAI later this year. If I ride my Hunq it'll be a new experience. Just for fun I threw together a survey and decided to give everyone a chance to pick my bike. To be fair I'm sending this to the Bike Friday list as well. ;-) Help me choose my bike...(with pictures) Bike Choice Survey http://www.statrix.com/whichbike.htm Aloha! -- Robert Harrison Honolulu, HI rfharri...@gmail.com statrix.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. *And yeah, as I said, the sizing stuff is somewhat subjective. The Hunqapillar works better for me than the Bombadil, especially for running drop bars. That being said, I do agree that the Hunqapillar is a killer bike which offers all of the awesomeness of the Bombadil, so the lineup still has the O.G. mountain bike category covered even without the B. [RBW] Re: Thinking of changing up the All Rounder - or spring fever??
OK...well the woodchippers are crossed off. I took a trip across town today to visit a LBS that carries a bunch of Salsa / Surly goodies and they had several bikes set up with the WC bars. I really liked the top position, and the hoods, but the drops were way outside my ideal. Too wide and too angled toward the ground. I might try to find something with a Midge set up and check those out. I like the idea that the drops are shallow, but basically level. The brake hoods should still offer a good flat position and effectively widen and pull back my hands vs the mustache. It would also add the comfy top position the m-bar lacks. I'll never part with the mustache because I do like it tried and true. BUT I had a flat bar set up I liked before I tried the m-bar, so it's always good to try new things. So far, the mustache has won out against; Noodles, Soma ARC, Bullmoose, and Albatross configurations. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Some were even shoeing Neomotos in there in the 2.1 variant, but it was very close and tight. When the Bombadil was revised into the diagonal version, the clearance was greatly increased. I've run 2.3 Neomotos with SKS fenders and still had lots of clearance. The Bombadil's clearance is now massive. Here's an early pic, before I adjusted the fenders... Yep. I had an early Bomba and the Quasi-Motos were max cap for the frame. I had no plans to run fenders so it didnt matter to me, but if I had whacked a rim out of true...well the rubbing would commence. Check this photo set.http://www.flickr.com/photos/42027576@N00/sets/72157622638063409/with/4087204970/ I already had a Bleriot when I added the Bomba planning to use it more off-road. As it turned out I could never come to terms with the Bomba as MTB. For whatever reason I wrestled with it going up technical ascents. Tried a few different bar set ups with only minor improvement. That said it became just a beefed up version of the Bleriot. Ultimately I sold both and ended up on the All Rounder I have now. My impression? 650B arguably is the perfect All Round size. I rode my Bleriot very comfortably on pavement and pretty rough singletrack with Fatty Rumpkins. Did I need the extra beefyness of the Bomba...not really. Would I have liked a bit more clearance to run an optional full fat tire? Yep. When I looked at at the two bikes, I always kept wanting to mix them. The simpler frame of the Bleriot, the canti bosses of the Bomba, but with a bit more room. The All Rounder I'm on is pretty darn close, and I often wonder how it would feel with 650b. But with it's gobs of clearance, I can stick a full on 2.3 in there and bounce down the trail so the fun is all. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
I'll say this much for the Bombadil, I like the name most out of all the LOTR inspired names. It seems perfect for a mountain bike, one designed not so much for ripping down trails at mach V or hitting jumps, but for rambling around in the woods. The headbadge is great too although I like the Hunqa's headbadge a little more. That's great that the tire clearance on the Bombadil was increased. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
If one is on a timetable, Co-Motion is turning tandems around relatively quickly. With a number of custom modifications and couplers, ours got to us in about 6 weeks after design approval. We have friends who are getting a 650b custom tandem for use with Hetres from Co-Motion, also expected in weeks. We have other friends who have waited more than a year on their 650b Bilenky tandem with no progress yet. Our Bilenky was designed and set up for touring. We run Marathon Racers, 26x1.6 and really like them. I highly recommend Bilenky's work, and, if you are getting a tandem definitely go either 26 or 650b. Our fully loaded tandem, with us on it, weighs well over 400 lbs and handles like a dream. [RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
We recently bought a used Mercian that has marathons on it which I think measure a touch over 40. Not much clearance, how many mm do folks consider minimum clearance? The bike rides very nicely. Those stout schwalbes are not supple fast tires but we aren't fast either and the ride is quite comfortable. I asked the seller about the smaller tires that seem so prevalent for road tandems. We concurred that that was just crazy. On Feb 6, 10:53 pm, Salween owen%livingrivers@gtempaccount.com wrote: Don't know if Grant and Co. will ever produce a tandem, so in the meantime will be getting one elsewhere. So wondering what that might translate to on a 700c tandem? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: No Bombadil????
I don't think of my Bombadil as a mnt. bike, more like a park bike. For the way I ride it it works great. With 200 bullmoose bars on my 52 frame the reach is good, so for me the top tube is none too long. As others have noted there are two different flavors of the Bombadil. After the Hunkapilar came out the design changed to a diagatube and the extra seat stays were added. The tire clearance was opened up quite a bit too. One part of the clearance puzzle was a new crown which I don't think had been developed when the Bombadil was first developed. I believe the steep price increase traces to the added seat stays that meet the diagatube at the seat tube. There is significant extra work there. I was talking to one of the guys there a while back and was told that Waterford refused to keep doing the stays and that joint, so they had to send the frames to Mark N to geat em completed before sending them to paint. It's a couple of months off so once I see which way the vote is trending I'll spend more time on that bike. But I really won't be training for it as I ride daily anyway and often ride several miles out of my way just because. ;-) This is one of those rides that is a shame to speed through anyway... Re: [RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)
I use them on my bikes. I assume you have the daruma already in place and the original flat metal washer + rubber washer, correct? The wedge replaces the metal washer and should fit inside the fork steerer (narrow diameter section) and the thinner edge on the front to help, accomodate the fender's curvature, although in my experience on the Riv bikes you still need to pull the front upwards a bit. If your bike has canti brakes it'll fit perfectly. If your bike has center pull brakes, you'll need to file the front section of the narrower circle as the long nut that tightens the brake pushes it forward and prevents it from fitting inside the steerer. Depending on the clearances, you'll use the black rubber washer or others to close the gap. Let me know if still have questions. Re: [RBW] Re: Rodeo-danna!
I always carry a big Western bandananananana in my jersey or rear pant's pocket: summer for sweat, winter for that awkward nose appearance (my nose comes from my Filipino half and, as my perfectly and entirely WASP father used to say, you don't have the nose to hide anything). I get mine for $1/each at Walgreen's or at Goodwill. But I'd pay a slight premium for a Rivendell model. On Thu, Feb 7, 2013 at 9:40 PM, Manuel Acosta manueljohnaco...@hotmail.comwrote: Pretty good. Re: [RBW] Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?
Having looked for a long time at R+E tandems I have to ask... Why wouldn't you go with them? The price point they seem to be able to hit for a semi-custom tandem frame is pretty fantastic. Why not get one and enjoy it? We have 32mm panaracer's on our burley paso doble. That's a tight fit with fenders but it is doable. I'd love to move to an R+E with either 650b wheels or able to comfortably fit a larger 700c. -sv On Thu, Feb 7, 2013 at 1:53 AM, Salween owen%livingrivers@gtempaccount.com wrote: Don't know if Grant and Co. will ever produce a tandem, so in the meantime will be getting one elsewhere. So wondering what that might translate to on a 700c tandem? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB
Hey Group, Up for sale is a used 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB. Its Toyo built, if that means anything. Repainted Butterscotch. Its 'creamier' in life than in the photos. definitely used, never abused. It has some paint chips here an there that i covered with nail polish. Some chainsuck chips and a little wear on the inside left chainstay from tire rub I guess. I sometimes squeezed 42s, so that is my only guess. There is also some shellac residue on the headtube and a little on the DT and TT. Headset is FSA almost brand new, oldish BB but still is smooth.Asking $1100+ shipping, which is now way less than half of the newly priced AHH frames which would be roughly $2500 including tax :) Would like to sell in the Bay Area if possible.-Mike http://www.flickr.com/photos/92673144@N02/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
