ways to save $40 a month if you are working and living in the US. I
 waited
for years before buying a Riv because they seemed so extravagant. Buying
the original Sam at $1000 in 2009 felt like a super-splurge bordering on

Hope I don't sound preachy, and perhaps your finances are more dire

[RBW] Re: OT Anyone have experience with this trailer?

2013-03-06 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I've seen the BOB used many times on trails (for trail maintenance),
hauling tools, chainsaws and gas cans.. some heavy-duty gear for sure, and
it works great!! It's best suited for offroad navigation where you don't
want 2 wheels tracking over uneven terrain, possibly causing the trailer to
capsize. If this is your intended use, the BOB is tough to beat. But it is
pricey and it is heavy. I don't need all that in a trailer, so I converted
a used Schwinn kiddie trailer into a cargo trailer... I removed the seats,
added a thin plywood floor with lightweight aluminum angle bracing
underneath. It's lightweight, sturdy (will hold 100 lbs), it's
weatherproof, the wheels are easily removable and it folds for storage. If
I were hauling bigger heavier loads, I'd definitely consider the Surly or
the BOB. The Surly is one serious trailer, and looks like it could haul a
refrigerator, but because it's a 2-wheeler, I doubt it can go where the BOB
can go.

Bike trailers are definitely evolving.

I have one. Like it a lot. Great for camping. You can ride single track
with it. I was told the Forest Service uses them to haul stuff around on
back country trails.

Your bike should have a reasonably stout rear triangle however. The trailer
works well with my trail bike and with my mixte (those extra stays are
great). It does not work well with my old Trek 610 road bike. The Trek
wobbles if the load is over about 25-30 pounds.

OK, the Public is removable, and it has a handle, but who wants to haul
around the actual basket?? It's way too klunky and unstable, especially
with a heavy bottle of wine. For me, a bag (or bags) of my choice will

OK, the Public is removable, and it has a handle, but who wants to haul around
the actual basket?? It's way too klunky and unstable, especially with a heavy
bottle of wine. For me, a bag (or bags) of my choice will always be
preferable, AND it will further protect my stuff when I place it in the basket
(that is BTW zip-tied to my rack). No... my basket stays put, and I use
whatever bag I happen to have with me. With the $40 I save, I could add
baskets to a few more bikes, or get myself a pretty snappy bag... :)

Peace,
BB

[RBW] Re: Does anyone have any experience with the Public bikes basket on a Nitto M-12 front rack?

2013-03-06 Thread Minh
i just borrowed a public bike this past weekend (from the hotel), just
looking at the rack on that, the platform looks a lot bigger/wider then an
M12, size is more similiar to a pletscher, so i'm not sure how this would
clip on to an M12, Bobby has the best suggestion, just learn to love having
a basket on all the time and using a canvas bag.

I teach courses on Tolkien's sources and fictions, and these Riv references
add new dimension to LOTR for me. I don't know enough about RBW and its

those of some products, but of course a general sense of elvishness is
clear: elves make things that are beautiful and useful. As Wlliam Morris
said, Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or
believe to be beautiful. And that may be said of certain bicycles, indeed.

[RBW] Re: V-Brakes and wide 700c tires w/fenders

2013-03-06 Thread Tom Harrop
Hi Owen,

I use Shimano V-brakes (107 mm arms), 700C Big Apples (57 mm actual width
on my rims) and Berthoud 60 mm steel fenders. It works great, although it
was necessary to put a dent in (or should I say cold set) the fenders to
get the housing stop/quick-release thingy on the V-brakes to clear. With 50
mm 700C Marathon Supremes (around 46 mm on my rims, from memory) I had nice
clearance on the fenders and no denting was necessary.

I think Tektro V-brakes are available with longer arms, and I've heard that
the arms on Paul Motolites are 114 mm but that measurement isn't given on
their website (anyone got a set they can measure?). You would need to have
the frame clearance and racks could get in the way. I intend to find out
about the Motolites and consider switching at some point.

[RBW] Sackville (Baggins) Reference

2013-03-06 Thread Aaron Young
Jim is right. If I recall correctly from some interview he gave, although
the LOTR connection was appreciated by Grant, the attitude and philosophy
of RMW was what he really was modeling. He wanted to run a company like
RMW, but with bikes. But as later product names attest, perhaps the Tolkien
became more of an influence. I think it's fairly clear that the way RBW is
managed differs from the norm in a positive way, which is another reason
I'm happy to support RBW.

Just curious, does anyone know if RMW had products with LOTR names or is
that more a RBW thing?

[RBW] Midge, again

2013-03-06 Thread PATRICK MOORE
A woman on this list declared her intention a month or so ago to
install a Midge. I'd be interested in hearing her opinion of it, and
learning how she set it up.

Me, I am still of mixed minds. (Howzat for a weird metaphor.) On the
one hand, it is, both overall one of the better compromises for on-
and off-road; the hoods are better than those of the 46 cm Noodles
(which were too damn' wide) and the hooks, tho' even wider, are as
comfortable because so much nearer and shallower. Compared to 42 cm
Noodles, the Midge is as comfortable on the hoods (this is where, for
me, the Midge shines) but considerably less so in the hooks -- again,
width and, also, because you simply can't set up the hooks to be
parallel to the ground: they are far too shallow and short.

OTOH, the 42 Noodles were useless on anything except firm surfaces,
while the Midge is wide enough even at the hoods to offer considerable
leverage and, in the hooks, gives all the control you need.

My problems with the Midge are (1) the great width in the hooks and
(2) how the slanted hooks make my very sensitive left palm suffer.
This last may be helped with even more added padding. As to the first,
I am wondering if I should lower the bar (currently ~2 cm above
saddle) a cm or two and use the hooks, not the hoods, as the cruising
position. But this means that, off road, the hooks will be hard to use
on steep drop-offs where you need maximum grip and braking.

Perhaps the solution is to have a separate off-road bike that I can
set up without any compromise for road riding ...

others using the BOB. Those touring with it like it. I'm just a pannier
guy but would have no problem loading heavy and using a trailer. Then
again I usually carry 70lbs of gear pannier weight included.

I used a Yak back in the late 90's early 2000's down the California coast a
couple times and really liked it. It was the early model where the front
fork part would swing around entirely into the inside cargo area, so it
took up a lot less space in my garage than the later model that couldn't do
that.

[RBW] Re: Does shellaced tape feel crusty?

2013-03-06 Thread M D Smith
By no means do I mean this to be snarky, but the following statement
gave me a little chuckle:

However, I successfully reused some [handlebar tape] on a kickstand where
I wasn't very concerned about the aesthetics.

I also like the feel of shellaced bar tape. I particularly appreciate how
long the tape lasts as compared to untreated cloth tape. One thing,
however, is that on really hot, humid days or after rain, the shellaced
tape can feel a little sticky. No worse than cork or foam or regular tape,
but worth noting.

All in good fun- Mike in Htfd CT

Re: [RBW] interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and innovation

2013-03-06 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Nice interview of Ritchey. I'll have to set aside time for the video.

Ritchey pops up in RRs every now and again-- clearly an influence to GP and
the industry. I'm interested to see how Ritchey's prediction of
simplification plays out. I see more 1-by-X's around, and SS, and fixies.
(Maybe b/c I'm in an urban environment? or flatter land area?)
Appaloosa/Mystery bike's 1-by-X (or stick-by-X?).

Then again, I checked out the SRAM XX1 Ritchey mentioned, having no idea
about these modern groups, and... wow $425 for an 11-speed cassette! (XX1
chain's $58.)

Re: [RBW] Re: OT Anyone have experience with this trailer?

2013-03-06 Thread Bill Gibson
Different bikes work better or worse with the BOB. If your bike is
flexible, you may wobble when heavy. But, if your bike is robust, and you
carry less than the maximum, it's the best I've ever used. I've also used
the original Cannondale bugger, and the Burley delite in a couple of
versions. Your position on the bike will affect the stability, too, but the
low center of gravity, the hub level hitch, the rolling resistance of the
one wheel, and the in-line aerodynamics all make it the best commercial
trailer around. I've heard of some customs that were better, but that's
another world.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT Anyone have experience with this trailer?

2013-03-06 Thread Christopher Murray
I have used it pretty extensively from quick overnights to cross country. It
works great Nd is super easy to pack- no worries about load balancing. The bike
is incredibly stable towing it and after using it for a few days the bike feels
strange without it. I have used it on a variety of bikes from touring bike to
my Bike Friday and it did great. The downsides? It adds weight and if you are
the only person with a trailer you are going to work harder to keep up. It also
means one more wheel- flats, etc. It is a pain to travel with and can make bus
and train trips a major chore. It will also be one more bag to check if you are
flying.

Overall it certainly has its upsides but if I were starting from scratch- with
the cost of shipping and airline fees- would lean towards panniers.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: V-Brakes and wide 700c tires w/fenders

2013-03-06 Thread dougP
During my research on V-brakes I found arm lengths all the way from 85 mm
(maybe even 80?) up to 107 mm. Of course not all brake posts are located
in the same spot on the frame relative to the rim. So you'll to do some
tedious measurements of your bike and research to figure out exactly what
will work. With fat tires, fenders, racks, etc., it can become quite a
puzzle. Then you get to the cost issue. There are perfectly serviceable
$30 brakes and equally serviceable but wonderful looking $150 brakes.

Brake levers also become an issue with V-brakes. Most flat bar MTB style
levers pull enough cable but for drop bars you need Tektro's long pull
lever. Brifters require a Travel Agent cable adapter if using longer arm
Vs as you would need to clear fat tires with fenders.

I think Tektro V-brakes are available with longer arms, and I've heard
that the arms on Paul Motolites are 114 mm but that measurement isn't given
on their website (anyone got a set they can measure?). You would need to
have the frame clearance and racks could get in the way. I intend to find
out about the Motolites and consider switching at some point.

Re: [RBW] Re: V-Brakes and wide 700c tires w/fenders

2013-03-06 Thread Eric Platt
Not on a Rivendell, but have Berthoud 60mm fenders and Schwalbe 50mm tires
(26) on a Surly Long Haul Trucker and the Shimano Deore V brakes work just
fine. Not sure I have a rubber boot on both, though. Can't remember. The
bike hasn't been out for a while as I decided not to put studded tires on
it this winter and we ended up with a snowy one.

[RBW] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-06 Thread iamkeith
I've been thinking about the midge for an off-road bar lately too. In
some ways it seems almost perfect, but my problem is that the
short lower drop extensions seem way too short to fit my hands
securely. So I found a product called Terminators from Control
Tech ( http://www.controltechbikes.com/english/examples/a_endplugs.php
) that might fix THAT problem by adding length, but at the expense of
being able to use bar end shifters. So then you'd have to use
brifters or, my favorite, Take-Offs by Kelly (
http://kellybike.com/2nd_xtra_takeoff.html
) with silver shifters. I'm just not sure the later option would work
due to the angled brake lever mounting position. I'd sure love it if
you would try this combination out and report back, though! ;-)
