[RBW] Eastern Oregon Teaser
*Tommy and I were lured to lands east of the Cascades by The Dalles Mountain 60 (it's not a race, not an event, just a bike ride, 60 miles of mixed surface riding over hilly terrain). When we got to the start it was more of a thing then what we were expecting, so we decided to head off on our own and improvise a route. Most of the day was spent semi-lost on rural roads of northern Wasco County, Oregon. It was a nice mix of dirt, gravel, and asphalt. They work fine. In fact they worked wonderfully with the reverse pull LX rd that came with the Sam Hill -- best shifting rd/shifter combo I've used, except for the fact that it worked in reverse. Great pics Smitty Tommy - that is a beautiful area - I do the Gorge Ride every year: Dalles to Mosher Tunnels and back via Rowena Crest and last year the day before I rode out 8 mile road as a warm up. It is a beautiful route. BTW the Gorge Ride is sponsored by the Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway. It is on June 15th of this year. The Friends have done a great job of restoring and preserving the old highway with the goal of providing a route that will be completely off Rt 84 from Troutdale to the Dalles. Sorry for the commercial - Riv content: the rides were done on my AHH. Re: [RBW] pedal across wisconsin?
Seth, No experience with this group in particular. Flat is a relative thing when it comes to bike rides - to me most of Wisconsin so far is 'flat' but that's because I'm judging it against long, sustained climbs. I don't think I've done a climb that was much longer than one mile yet (though I knowere were there are a couple.) I think the difference between the maximum and minimum elevations for the state is only something like 1,000' so there obviously won't be any really extended climbs. Some areas have lots of short, sharp climbs, though - I did a ride down around New Glarus a couple of years ago and actually had to use my third chainring! If a route follows one of the meandering rivers it's a good bet that it will be relatively flat. Crossing from one river to the next can involve a little climb. A bigger deterrent to riding here is the wind, which can get pretty monotonous :( That being said, though, I love riding here. The county and other back roads are an increadible gift to the cyclist and the drivers have been much more corteous than they were in Washington (caveat - I live, and mostly ride, in a pretty rural area here and I lived in the Everett/Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia corridor there.) -Ken On Sunday, March 10, 2013, Seth Vidal wrote: Hi, Does anyone on the list have any experience with: http://pedalacrosswisconsin.com/ I'm a little curious about them - though I must admit - doing 50-60 miles/day for 6 days feels like it could leave me a bit tired - I'm curious just how flat this really is and other experiences. [RBW] Re: pedal across wisconsin?
I'm not familiar with that organization, but I can vouch for Wisconsin being a nice state for road riding, with a dense network of good quality, low traffic alphabet roads (the county roads usually have names like A and QQ). Personally, I find the area around Madison to be a little dull (mostly flat to rolling through farm fields), but the state in general is not terribly flat. There are plenty of grueling climbs just west of where this ride appears to be routed, but in general the areas listed are more flat. [RBW] Understand your limitations.
Good time riding to nowhere and back. Doing my first Populaire last year I got to riding with Esteban who told me when nearing the end of his 300k and there's a zen feeling with nothing around you in sheer darkness. It was a humbling opportunity to ride with so many strong and experience cyclists. Some highlights. -Riding with miles of wildflowers. - Tagging along with Ian's group till River Rd. - The beautiful rolling hills after Healdsburg. - Coastal tailwinds all the way to the Marshal Store. - Riding with and talking to Jenny Oh about her aspirations in finishing a Randonneur Series( good luck to her) Good sense of learning happened. -Always jump on the tandem train. They can take you to wonderful places when you are hurting. - Riding in sheer darkness on a quiet road by yourself is zen-like. - Jump in groups to break up the monotony of riding alone. - Let groups go when you know your cooked. - Understand the wonderful healing properties of Slim Jims. - You can and will get dropped by everyone riding anything. - Bring extra everything. Food, clothes, gloves, lights, stories, smiles. You know the essentials. - Getting stung by a bee sucks. Specially when you get stung near the saddle area... Pictures Proved that it's pretty at nowhere: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjEhBB7R -Manny What there's no burrito place open at 11 at night? Saw your pics. I am envious. All those miles of beautiful road and scenery. (Speaking as a resident of NYC.) (I wouldn't call that nowhere.) [RBW] Re: [Randon] Does anyone make a small, simple helmet light?
If that's what you're looking for, you'll be better off looking at your local hardware store (as one other responder suggested). You might also try Big 5 or another discount sporting goods store--REI and other sports-related stores tend to offer nicer, higher-priced items that have more features. --Eric campyonly...@me.com www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org Blog: http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com Twitter: @campyonlyguy On Mar 10, 2013, at 9:50 PM, NormC normc...@gmail.com wrote: These are exactly the sort of lights I'm talking about. Not one of them, as far as I can tell from their web sites or visits to REI, have a single brightness level and a simple on-off switch. Small, light, held on with elastic straps. (can put velcro on behind the straps for more security. They also usually allow angle adjustment. And some even have a red led if you think that'd be useful. Stop by REI some time, they have a decent display and selection of them. -- Ian On Sun, Mar 10, 2013 at 7:54 PM, NormC norm...@gmail.com wrote: I like a small lightweight lamp mounted on my helmet for close-up use at night - reading cuesheets, fixing a flat, finding something from the bottom of a bag. For me, the best helmet light is very small, very lightweight, only bright enough for arm's-length or be-seen use, and has two settings, on and off. Unfortunately, such a simple device seems almost impossible to obtain these days. All the small and well-made helmet lights seem to be over-engineered, providing several brightnesses, including constant and strobing modes, and with a requirement to cycle through the modes every time you turn on, just to get to the dim setting one wants. The market seems saturated with fussy multi-featured lamps while not offering something simple. Does someone make what I'm looking for? Thanks for any pointers. -Norm -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups randon group.
