[RBW] The Betty Foy Project
I was cleaning up my bike stuff and my wife saw my Albatross bars that I have hanging around and said she loved those bars as they reminded her of the bike she grew up with in Japan. That gave me an idea why not build her up a Betty Foy. I am between bike projects for myself, so I ordered a Betty Foy that is suppose to be here next week. I started the parts collection. So far I have the Stronglight crank in 165 from Riv, Shimano XT rear, Ultegra triple front, MKS pedals, Nitto stem and seatpost, Dura Ace bar end shifers, XT cassette, Brooks saddle, Silver brakes, SRAM 991 chain, Marks front Nitto rack, Wald basket, Pletcher kickstand, essentially everything but the wheels and tires. The question is what do I do for wheels? Should I just buy pre-built wheels from Riv and call it a day? The amount she will ride it (5-10 times a year) says this is the most cost effective. Since I went with the best on everything else, should I really buy custom built wheels? Hubs are an easy choice but what rim would compliment that bike? Should I build them up myself? I have never built wheels but I just bought the Park 2.2 wheel truing stand and really how hard can building a wheel for a 100 pound woman be? I am mechanically inclined, never taking my bike to a bike shop for anything but pressing in a headset. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. I someone has a set that they think would be appropriate to sell then let me know, I might consider it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: FS: 1984 Trek 620/ Price reduction
Having found no buyer for this wonderful bike, I have decided to reduce the price before moving to Ebay. Re: [RBW] The Betty Foy Project
I've been generously given a set of wheels (thanks, Kelly/Tom) for the Ram but, if you can't get a freebie, I'd vote for building your own. (Incidentally, traded the donated one for a set of Open Pro/Ultegra ones from my brother, who wanted a sturdier, wide-rim set for a 29er.) OTOH, I had the budget wheels on the Sam Hill I briefly owned and they were perfectly good. [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
Proves my argument from our Trout Unlimited chapter board meeting yesterday. Texas has one chapter, Guadalupe River, it's also the state council, has 5000 members and is the 3rd largest business unit within the national organization, behind Michigan and New York state councils. Somebody said we could save money printing newsletters by forcing people to opt in if they want to receive printed newsletters rather than online. No, opting out is great, but if the choice is to opt in, we lose communication with 4000 of those 5000 members, and that communication is part of our directive. They need to know that we're working to restore native Rio Grande cutthroat trout in McKittrick Canyon. [RBW] Cycling computers
Hi all. Thought I'd ask all of you who use computers for recomendations. I've been on the fence about using a computer to track mileage for some time now, but I believe I'd like to try. The criteria: 1. It has to be very simple to operate and easy to read. 2. I don't need or want heart rate monitor or anything like altitude or anything complicated. 3. I'm just interested in tracking mileage (how far was my ride today? I seldom know - which is not always a bad thing, but I get curious). 4. I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm thinking I can do this for $30 or so? Thanks. John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Cycling computers
Hi John. Do you have a smart phone by any chance? If so and if you already take yours with you when you ride then you already have a cycle computer. I use a app called Cyclemeter but there are many more options out there. I turn it on when I head out on a ride, put in my bag and forget it. But you could get a handlebar mount for your phone and go that way. These apps are so intuitive they make traditional cycle computers obsolete. Nothing against not having a smart phone of course. There are great deals out there on the more traditional cycle computers. My most recent experience is with a Cateye Wireless. I wasn't happy with it. Very confusing to program. If I were going that route I would look for a cheap, wired Avocet 35 from back in the 90's. I found their operation simple. Never needed all the cadence and heart rate stuff. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I just use a wired Cateye. Older model, but basically similar to this one in terms of function http://www.rei.com/product/838365/cateye-cc-vl520-velo-7-wired-bike-computer I've found my old Cateye to be very accurate for distance readings. Mine isn't waterproof in an extended downpour, so now I'm in the habit of putting a small plastic bag over it in rain. It would be better if waterproof. I prefer wired instead of wireless, due to battery life. Something that is hard to find on a cheaper computer is illumination. In addition to basic function, illumination for me would be the most useful feature, I only use the computer for longer rides (touring and randonneuring. ,For commuting, I don't find a computer useful. My favorite is my actual PC !! Yes, if/when I wish to know how far I rode, I just go to google maps. I have my home destination coordinates as the start page, then I simply click to add destination points as needed, as a simple point A to B often chooses the fastest route for cars, not necessarily the one I chose. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
Point of Order: There are 2339 members as of today, 4/28/13 Separate from the accounting, I like to think of this list as a focused resource. Now that the archiving bugaboos have been largely sorted out by google, the information which you can access from previous list posts and discussions is pretty significant. I do think that for all the basic questions which pop up (and just to be clear, basic questions are great!) there is some noticeable search activity which goes on as well. I don't think we are at all unique in that we have a smaller number of actively posting members. Where I like to think we differ is in the quality of the discussion. We don't need to argue that this year's drivetrain system is better than last year's, nor do we need to vouch for why the newest wrinkle is now and forever the latest/greatest. It can be a bit disconcerting to dive into a discussion which has been going on a while. (I mean, there are folks on this list I've been crossing paths with online for nearly two decades.) The common experience in an internet discussion is to raise a hand only to get it slapped back down. We're an exception to that. There are a whole host of reasons why folks join lists. Private notes now and again indicate that a good number of people greatly appreciate the quality of information and discussion here. Bicycles are simple tools. At least the ones which we seem to be collectively drawn to. Done right, they simple in the sense of violins or guitars - capable of realizing works of great complexity and beauty. And as they say, if you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own... ;^) Jim / list admin / cyclofiend.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Though new to this list I felt a common Rivhood with the participants and have learned immensely in my short participation. I also belong to another group and for the most part just read and learn and don't feel I have anything to contribute to that list. With the Riv group if I have a question I'll make a post and have always received helpful information. My favorite posts on this list are the ride reports with images included, they are always inspirational and get me out to do the same! Michael's question is interesting to ponder, however I am happy with the current state of the list and appreciate Jim's moderating the broad scope of topics and the polite tone. [RBW] Re: First Rivendell Siting in the Wild
If I lived in SF, or some civilized metropolis, I would expect to come across Rivendells with some regularity; here in East Tennessee/ southwestern Virginia, I wouldn't have expected such; saved from that because Steve and Bobby at MSL became Riv dealers Here in Kingsport, I've only only seen one other, a Quickbeam, but I did have an retired gentleman intercept me one day to ask about my Ram, recognizing one of Grant Petersen's designs. In Bristol, I've seen a couple of Hilsens, and a Sam or two. Over in Abingdon, on the Creeper Trail, I've met another Ram. Only Atlantis I've seen is Steve's, and only one Roadeo at MSL; my Bombadil is the only one close by of which I'm aware. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. As I have a number of bikes, I have standardized on certain components. One of which was the Cateye wired cyclocomputers - they have worked great for me. I like mileage and temperature to be features on my cyclometer. That way I can see how much temp extremes I can take for reference. Good to know so you don't psych yourself outta a ride just because you heard its gonna be 105 and humid tomorrow for your metric century. [RBW] Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.
Wanted your thoughts and experience on this issue I have been having with my Riv's. I know this sounds rediculous, but: *I am wondering if you had any trouble adapting from race geometry fit bikes you were used to riding, to the more upright-like rivendell bikes and how you got through it.* Here is what I mean: I started on a race geometry bike and rode it for 3.5 years. I was only about 1.5cm below saddle height with the drop bars. So it was nothing extreme. Always comfy, but wished I could sit more upright for better view sometimes. I wanted to sit higher, have more stable wider tires, and fenderability. I like the traditional steel type frame looks and appointments, too. Now: Got a Bleriot last August, and a new Sam in Feb. 2013. They are great rides, and comfy during the rides, but since last September I pay for it later in the day with low back pain, etc, that can last into the next day. No matter what set up I try, I seem to have problems. Noodle drop versions of the bikes. I am puzzled by this really wierd and frustrating experience. Am I just getting old (44 now)? Medically I seem to be fine, and doc seems to think my back is fine. More upright is supposed to be better for the back and neck. Maybe sitting bolt upright, or sitting low is good for the back, but anything between 40-80 degrees isn't for some? *I can only imagine that my problem is that, for whatever reason, my body just doesn't like to sit upright.* Seems like anything above saddle height for the bars causes pain. But I am happy to have the wider tires and fenderability features. Now if I could just dial in the fit. I guess I will try to replicate my race fit onto the Rivs and see how it goes. Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining. This is a valuable resource with quality posts and info, and as I have said before, *the* most pleasant bike forum I have *ever* seen. It is a pleasure to read and chat here. I like the low traffic, too. Adds to the laid back air. I was just thinking that with the few online Riv-specific resources that there are, owners aren't flooding in here just because it is one of the few to be had for them. Sure, people have lives (not that we don't). Maybe some don't have the time or the interest. Maybe some buy Riv's but just see them as any other bike to be bought and ridden and they are not that into cycling. Maybe there is something about the typical Riv owner that makes them less into using the net. Maybe they are all out on long cycling tours!! [RBW] Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
Based on my experience, the RBW universe is pretty diverse. Some Riv owners don't know or care who Grant Petersen is. Many don't know or care what Riv models exist in addition to whichever one they own. Believe it or not, a few Riv owners have no interest in meeting other Riv owners or in being part of anything that resembles an owners' club. Some just bought a Riv because it looked nice, and didn't spend any time delving into the back story or the nitty gritty enough to know there's an actual Riv cult. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. You are on the right track getting the contact points the same as your current road bike. I recently went through lower back pain and it was just having the seat to far back on the rails. I put a lugged seat post on that moved it back considerably. No back pain on today's ride..knee pain either. So set your contact points and seat in relation to pedal spindle. I don't for real high maybe 1/2 inch over to equal saddle heights. Good luck Kelly -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Question for modern geometry race bike only riders who later went to Rivendells.
Hi Michael, That seems strange. I am 52 and have had the reverse experience. On my race bike I rode with similar contact points as you are describing on your race bike, and had neck and back pain consistently. When I changed to the Riv with handle bar's considerably higher in relation to my seat no more pain. As I see it everything is connected seat fore/aft height ect... you just need to be patient and make micro changes. I've had mostly leg pain as I've worked on dialing my contact points in. I've heard leg length discrepancies can cause hip and back pain. I'm no expert on such things I hope you resolve your issues. [RBW] Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
It's normal, having a forum where 1% of the people do 90% of the talking. 90% lurk, 10% participate, 1% participate daily. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1%25_rule_(Internet_culture) If you want to see a change, post more questions, or chime in with expertise. I would bet a small amount of prestige that some old silverbacks would step back to make room, and the proportions would stay the same. If someone wants a doctoral thesis, they could graph this group's participation as an example of the rule. Master's thesis, maybe. For a Doctorate, you'd need to find an anomalous group, and explain what makes it unique and how to replicate it... To us on the list, these facts are surprising. But true. There is another guy in town that also owns an Atlantis, I run into him maybe once a year. The first time I stopped him, I was expecting a degree of friendliness based on common ownership of a steel bike in a carbonic world. He didn't seem to think it interesting that 2 guys in the same town would have the same niche bike. When we see each other, he'll chat for a moment but then must be going. I've mentioned our So Cal Riv group but he has no interest. His bike always has panniers he told me he has no car, so that's his wheels. But as to any association with other Riv owners, he seems baffled by the idea. And he's probably not alone. dougP On Sunday, April 28, 2013 8:58:22 PM UTC-7, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery wrote: Based on my experience, the RBW universe is pretty diverse.
