RE: [RBW] Summer Starts.
Addison, mid-June sure seems like a late end to the school year! I retired from teaching a year-ago-May. Retirement is a much better break than summer. While teaching, my summers (and I'm imagining most who have commented) were the time for teaching summer school, taking summer classes, attending workshops or helping run workshops. And always in the back of one's mind was the ongoing analysis of how the previous year had gone, and what might be tweaked up a bit to change or improve the next time around, while trying to decompress from the school year. My current activities (besides constant grass mowing) include, gardening, cycling, hand tool woodworking, blacksmithing, helping my Mom after recent heart surgery (she's doing fine). Riv content: I had a nice 80 miles or so on the Riv yesterday, with some rain here in s.w. MO. Fenders were nice. Too warm for a rain shell, so you just enjoy the rain. I wear a visor (cut up ball cap) under the helmet. It provides shade when sunny and keeps rain out of my eyes. I notice I hardly drink any water when it's cool and raining. Also, I'm usually nibbling on food out of the handlebar bag, but zip it closed during rain. Yesterday's food; swiss cheese and pecans. I'm trying to eat less carbs - including when riding - and I notice that on long rides I have much less tendency to bonk. Enjoying the endless summer . . . Re: [RBW] Re: Google behaving badly
Chrome light and fast? It's the biggest memory hog out there. Maybe light and fast if you have 1 tab open only. But if you use a lot of tabs it's worse at memory management than the other browsers. Firefox is more efficient when you've got a lot of tabs open. That being said, I have 16GB of RAM and recently got a 750GB SSD and nothing is slow anymore, so I am using Chrome and just taking the memory hit in stride. Re: [RBW] Summer Starts.
Yeah, we went to a balanced calendar this year so instead of 10 weeks off in summer it's more like 7. The up side...a week off in October, 3 weeks in winter, and a 2 week spring break! [RBW] Re: Tire lending library?
I'm with Doug, I think that this would warrant its own group to keep things cleaner. We could start with donated tires that are half worn or better, not necessarily new, which gives the opportunity to see how the tires will look/last/fit in the long run. I have been thinking about posting a wanted add for a set to see how large of a tire I could fit under a new frame, and this *library *would be perfect. And I agree, one set at a time. Maybe we could throw in a couple of bucks to get the thing started, or a couple of bucks per transaction and shipping is shipping, so as long as the library stays intact, everyone pays for shipping on the way out. -Andy On Thursday, June 12, 2014 2:05:50 PM UTC-7, dougP wrote: Interesting idea. One rule may be only 1 set at a time. dougP On Thursday, June 12, 2014 10:16:31 AM UTC-7, William! wrote: Anyone else interested in starting a sort of tire lending library for the list? There are quite a few tires I've been curious to try (or to even see if they'll fit) but the cost has prevented me from taking the risk. I'm imagining a tire lending library would: - Start by letting all list members vote for the tires they'd want to see in the library - Allow list members to join the library by purchasing or donating a set of the tires on the 'most wanted' list. There may need to be some sort of additional donation or buy-in given the range in tire prices. - Let a library member 'check out' a tire by paying its current holder the price of shipping them. A library member could use the tires for a reasonable amount of time (a week?) or until the tires are requested by another member. - Keep track of who's got what on a private Google doc or a simple web app. Maybe also let people share their reviews of a tire they've checked out. If there is enough interest I'd be happy to organize and possibly build a simple web app to power it if Google docs isn't sufficient. Thoughts? Tenkara fly fishing intrigues me, much the way SS intrigues me and I now love it. Simplicity. No reel, but a well crafted pole and line. All collapsing very small and portable and easy to set up. If I was to fish again, I think that is what I would do. With abandon, Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar steerer too long?
Thanks for the reply! I didn't want you to think I was being snarky or dismissive at all. Just a thought that the frame looks big in the pic based on the lack of seatpost and height of bars. Especially as Hunqs have a sloping top tube. But if your top tube length is the same as other bikes... well, don't know what to say then! Cheers, David it isn't a contest. Just enjoy the ride. - Seth Vidal On Thu, Jun 12, 2014 at 7:09 AM, Ginz theg...@gmail.com wrote: David, Thanks for the input and your statement is fair. I think that part of it is the angle of the photo. Part of it is the 2.5cm of headset spacers and part of it is that the spacer stack leaves the already tall Bullmoose bars a bit too high. It seems that all my complaining about low bars and short head tubes has come around and bitten me in the tail! On paper, the top tube length and other dimensions are like most other bikes I ride. The difference with the Hunqapillar seems to be that the front end is much higher via a tall headtube and long steerer tube. When I look at photos of Hunqpillars across the internet, some saddles are high...some are low some bars are jacked way up...some are not. I've thought about going for a 47cm Atlantis but the top tube would be really short for me to use with a sweeping handlebar. I already have an Albatrossed bike and a hardtail mountain bike. Drops are out of the question. That's why I'm thinking I should trim this fork by about 15mm...maybe even 20mm... I do have a spare cro-mo Albatross lying around and...maybe I should try that first. It's just that the Bullmoose is so nice on bumpy trails. Thanks for any input, everyone! Ginz -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: NIB Dura Ace 32 Hole Rear Track hub
As most of you have seen I've set up a 2x2 bike. Double chainring with a double freewheel. I kind of backed into the frameset here on the group, but the concept around the build was fully baked. Enough so that I had pulled together a good chunk of the build kit. Thing is, my concept was that I'd be building around a used Quickbeam or simpleOne. So, one of the things I picked up was a NOS NIB Dura Ace rear track hub, 32 hole, low flange. The frameset I ended up with has a 130mm rear end and came with wheels, so the likelihood that I will use this Dura Ace Rear hub anytime small is pretty slim. Anyway, I got it for $100 shipped, which I think was a good deal. I'm offering it for $100 shipped, which I still think is a good deal. The specific model is HB-7710. Contact me off list if you want it, or have questions. I could take pics, but it's really this: http://images.esellerpro.com/2375/I/507/158/hb7710ars.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: I would rather ride my Rivendell thank you
Sorry about the loss of your job. I know how it is to lose a job. However I've learned being funemployed isn't bad also. I've picked up the best new knowledge and experiences during my funemployment and was able to use it to land another job in an unrelated field. Good luck with another door opening. I'm certain it will happen. On Thursday, June 12, 2014 4:53:34 PM UTC-7, blakcloud wrote: Today I was called into a meeting where I was met by HR, management and my union reps. I told them I had my bike at work and I was going to ride it home. They didn’t understand this. They suggested I put the bike in a cab and go home but again I declined. Losing your job is one thing, but not being able to ride my Rivendell home is even worse! The ride home was blissful. I love my bike. P.S. They did give me a pretty good package, so not all is bad. Plus after dealing with 3700 sex offenders against children in my career so far, I might relish a change. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: I would rather ride my Rivendell thank you
Dear Blakcloud, My heart goes out to you in terms of what the future may hold. But your attitude, but not being able to ride my Rivendell home is even worse!, inspires me. Thank you for that. I cannot imagine what you had to do to accomplish what you did. Whatever good you could do with the people you worked with is acknowledged. I don't know how you managed that and dealt with it, but it is sincerely appreciated. Our dear friend Hugh has it right. Things are put in our path for a reason. And there is always the possibility it's going to be better. That WILL happen.
