Obviously, a frame will do the trick, but that's something I don't have have, and probably won't anytime real soon. Meanwhile, just about every other part of my bike was bought from Rivendell. Tires, saddle, bar, grips, bar end Silvers, brakes, fenders, double legger kickstand, multiple straps, a Saddlesack, and many of my favorite wardrobe items. Bar tape and one or two accessories weren't ordered from Riv, but are the brands sold there. There's twine wrapped in more than a few places. I've read, recommended, and loaned both the latest RBW catalog and *Just Ride.* A hatchet and some camping bits are likely to be ordered soon. Is there a component percentage or a ratio of parts by mass that determine how Rivvy a bike is? Now, I'm sure I can call myself an iBOB, but as Google Groups go, the tone here is more comfortable. No one will quibble if I lurk or occasionally suggest that if Riv describes a hunk-O-cheese as a good thing to put in a Sackville pannier, then cheese should be On Topic, but am I a Riv Owner? Not exactly, but I'd like to think that if I mailed a postcard to HQ, they'd reply with the same. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Fantastic, Tony! Your Saluki is looking a wee bit like those old Australian outback sheep sheerer bikes! Strap on your bed roll and you're all set. Grin. Re: [RBW] Re: Under-biking the Saluki
Patrick that silky saw looks awesome (if a bit spendy!). 18-20 diameters are pretty impressive work! The bow saw definitely could have handled the tree faster, I did use it for the felling cut but I chopped out the hinge. I'm a total novice at this kind of thing but I'm enjoying myself. Eventually I'll have a shed up and my full size tools like those strapped to the bike will just live out there. At that point I think some smaller peices like your silky saw and a smaller axe will probably be my bike companions! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Under-biking the Saluki
If your chainstays are on the stiff side, don't know since I don't own a Saluki, you can run a BOB YAK trailer. These work really, really, well for poking around the woods. You can do single track with them. Anyway... if you have a YAK, you can get this: http://www.amazon.com/BOB-Tool-Rax-Ibex-Models/dp/B000RH94XK It's a tool rack for the trailer. I have one. It works great. I first saw these in a state park system. The park's trail maintenance crew had Trek Antelopes with Yak trailers, and these tool racks. They were hauling axes and chain saws for clearing chores. They were very happy with the setup. The biggest advantage to the trailer is that you can use a regular bike. The trailer attaches or detaches in about 20 seconds, making the transition from road or trail bike to work bike very simple. So you tend to use the system a lot. I use mine regularly. Re: [RBW] Re: Under-biking the Saluki
Will that is awesome! I was thinking about trailers but mostly the dual wheeled varieties like the super-tough looking surly models. I'd forgotten about the BOB trailers. That might be a great option, though perhaps pulled by one of my B-stones rather than the Saluki. Not that it can't handle it but I'm already leaning on it as my daily commuter, go-fast, light tourer and everything else... :) I'd love to have seen those park rangers rolling out on Antelope's w/ Yak trailers... makes alot of sense. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. A few minor updates to the S.H. which actually make it feel like an entirely new bike. Going to lose the Albatross in favor of the Albastache in a few days. Just need the right stem for that..(so if anyone has a 8cm, 26.0mm technomic or otherwise, let me know) The RnR's feel great, so supple and you hardly can tell it's a knobby on pavement. It's steep for sure, but considering a current complete used Rivendell will run $1500 on the low end, and even X0-1's are fetching 2k...it's a nice complete bike in a big size that would stand in for an Atlantis for someone not ready to spend 3-4x the entry fee. Re: [RBW] Riv Owner Qualifications
This isn't my list, so my thoughts on the matter are to be taken with the appropriate grain of salt, but I'd be inclined to say that interest in the topics discussed on the RBWOB list is probably all that's required to participate. The conversation revolves around Rivendell Bicycles, bicycle components, and riding in the Riv-way, but I have never encountered any form of exclusivity from participants with regard to the particular bicycles posters are seen standing near or riding. I'd say that being willing to just ride should be good enough. That's not an official response of course, but it's one that aims towards the sort of inclusion that I've always felt Grant and Co. like to foster. So anyway, I decided to try and make the Saluki into an off-road axe/saw hauling utility vehicle to access some family property in Winchester VA. I'm hoping to spend alot more time up there in the next couple years and think a dedicated off road bike (dare I say fat bike?!?) is in my future. Bottom line was I didn't bring the 4wd vehicle so I was either riding or hiking in. I particularly wanted to finally demo the sweet Hultsfor Bruk American Felling Axe I picked up off the list a month or so ago but hadn't gotten any use out of it and my 36 bow saw. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_GEGvqJlSyg/U6j7Pnx9YII/EdY/I0pyjUMc2iM/s1600/DSC_3898.jpg Yes that's surly junk straps and old toe clip straps holding the axe and bow saw on. I'm not endorsing or suggesting anyone else try this! I will be doing some more garage work to figure out a better, safer and more secure way to mount these things for the next iteration (and probably on a knobbier tired bike w/out fenders). It did, however, get the job done. My 'ride' out to the site I was working on is less than 1.5 miles and there was so much mud early and then hill after that I hike-a-biked most of it. The way back was easier to ride... I'm amazed how difficult I find starting up off-road hills from a dead stop. Re: [RBW] Any recommendations on a Atlantis wannabe?
Or many late 80s to early 90s rigid MTBs can fill the role adequately. Look for the top-end models for nice tubing and geometry. Most sizes of Atlantii have 72 degree head and seat tubes and 44cm chainstays, for comparison purposes. Some vintage MTBs have strange tech dead-ends, though. My '88 Schwinn KOM has chainstay U-brakes and a Uniglide hub, for example, and no braze-ons (because race bike). If I hadn't already named my KOM the The King (of 'Merica), I'd consider Dr. Strangebrake, or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the U-brake. The U-brakes work great with new cables and Kool-stop pads, but they never stop being inconvenient to service. I'm pretty thrilled with the Esbit and use the titanium bowl that Riv offers to heat water. [RBW] Re: Losing Bike weight vs. Rider weight. Which one more effectively makes you go faster?
Patrick, I'm doing the keto thing in the hopes that I can reverse my recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetes, lose some weight and be able to spend more time riding my bicycle in interesting places. I'm encouraged by your experience with a ketogenic diet but did you experience a transition phase where things were difficult? When I get on my bike, I literally feel like I've already ridden 15 miles. My legs are just dead weight. I know this is a side-effect of ketosis but I'm wondering how long it might take for it to pass. I'm only on day eight. Blood sugar is holding steady below 100 and ketone strips are showing large concentrations of ketones in my urine. On Sunday, May 11, 2014 1:45:02 PM UTC-5, Deacon Patrick wrote: Rework the engine. It's far cheaper and better for your health. I used to weigh nearly 300 pounds. I now weigh 190. I'm now on a full time ketogenic diet (high fat, very low carb). I can ride all day without food and far less water (processing carbs takes a LOT of water). I'm riding string, better, and farther than ever and feeling far better doing it. No muscle soreness after long rides (that's a ketogenic thing apparently). Of course, I'm doing the go light thing as well, so it needn't be exclusive. But I focused on the engine first and am delighted. With abandon, Patrick On Sunday, May 11, 2014 12:31:59 PM UTC-6, Michael wrote: Assuming the 1-manpower engine stays the same. But I am not sure how these mechanical things work, so I was wondering. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Losing Bike weight vs. Rider weight. Which one more effectively makes you go faster?
Och! I'm sorry. I sent it via the web interface, so have no record of it. Perhaps Chris can forward it to you? One thing I meant to put in but don't know if I did or not is that measuring ketones via urine is not very helpful. As you becomes keto adapted, your body will hold on to ketones, recognizing them as fuel, and so you need to measure blood ketones. So ketones in the urine can be zero even though you are fully keto adapted. For example, when I first shifted, my urine smelled sweet (ketones) but doesn't anymore even through I'm burning almost exclusively fat/ketones. Re: [RBW] Grand Bois Cypres tires, a review.
Ann My own experience is the same as yours. 60 psi rear and 55 in front. Faster downhill on coarse roads and surprisingly good to climb on. On Sunday, June 22, 2014, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.com wrote: I got back yesterday from Sierra to the Sea, a 586 mile supported bike tour from Lake Tahoe to San Francisco. I used the Grand Bois Cypres tires. I now want to report that they were splendid. We encountered some roads with terrible pavement, as I knew we would since this was my second year on the trip. The tires are marked for 75-95 psi, so I initially tried 80 psi. After a day, I let out some air; around 60 psi ended up working well for me. Others would slow down on the bumpy downhills, but I just zoomed. My buddy with narrow tires was constantly crowing about how great his tires were. When I followed him on some bad stretches of pavement on the flats, I grew tired of his weaving around trying to find a good line, whereas I just rode straight with no trouble. No flats, no problems. I still think that there ought to be a standard way to measure bike tire width, so we can compare tires from different vendors. But these tires (which still measure 30mm wide on my bike) performed admirably. -- -- Anne Paulson It isn't a contest. Re: [RBW] A ride report on my summer soltice ride
Nice recovery. Lack of sleep lethargy is hard to overcome, especially when you tack on all the riding above your comfort level on the first day. I wish the 2nd day of the 600K I rode this year was easy like Sunday morning. Instead, it was straight into the teeth of a 25mph headwind after the passage of a front. I made it to the turnaround control with 3 minutes to spare. OK, so the return trip was easy like Sunday morning at least ;) one of the few times I have wished for a bigger gear than 46 in front.
