[RBW] Re: Velocity Service!

2014-08-31 Thread ascpgh
I've had the same experience with Patagonia. The shop where I worked had a
dedicated warranty person who kept the line open with all our brands to
give the best result their products could in the face of any problem. That
is how you built unconditional, repeat customers for your brand or your
business.

Most companies are very reasonable when approached reasonably. Their
generosity is often the acknowledgement of a reasonable approach and
interaction with them. Kudos to Velocity for holding their word!

I also value greatly and support businesses and manufacturers that offer
lifetime warranties of defects of their products . Of course, lifetime
generally means lifetime of the product under normal/intended conditions.
Each manufacturer has their own ideas of this, so it's best to know the
 policy .

Many outdoor gear and clothing manufacturers have these also . I
especially appreciate Patagonia's warranty service because the quality of
their work is outstanding. I've had them repair multiple items over the
years and they stitch so well they leave no trace of what was defective .
Real craftspeople , and I appreciate that !

Good to know Velocity has some great service .

then why
not get them for the next set?
Nit picky, I know, but trying to optimize for my next set of tires.

32 vs 42? Not even close. Right up there with bringing a knife to a
gunfight. 38 vs 42, much closer, but let me tell you a little story.
There was a time a few years ago when I switched my Saluki from 38s
to
42s. Just before the switch, I went on a gravel road ride. Long
downhill,
I felt like I was out there at 9 tenths, descending at maybe 12 mph.
Not
totally terrified, but it really felt like I was out there close to
the
raggedy edge. I put on the Hetres and around 3 weeks later, I do
that very
same ride again. This time I'm going down that same hill feeling
very
assured and comfortable, no more than 5 or 6 tenths, and I look down
and
find I'm taking that same rutted, rock strewn descent at 20 mph. So
some
of that might have been that I had some experience, I'd been down it
and
lived to tell the tale, etc.; but the difference in how comfortable
it was
and how relaxed and in control I felt at how shockingly much faster,
that's
 the tires.

I was thinking the Loup 38's, but thought I could even go to Cypres
32's.
I just ride roads/MUPS. Definitely want normal casings. Not the extra
 legers.

  *Was thinking about these issues:*

*1. Which, in theory, has the least likelihood of punctures (tread
 thickness and inflation pressures)?*
Tread thickness on Loups is 3mm.
Tread thickness on Cypres is 3.5? (I think the same as the 3.5
 tread Hetre?).
Can both be ridden at 50psi? Compass site doesn't say inflation
ranges of
 the tires.

Depends on your weight. Google BQ Tire Pressure Chart.

Sounds like both the same likelihood of puncture of they can be
ridden
at 50psi for less debris hammerability into tread?

*2. Cushy, soft, road-buzz-dampening ride.* Loup is higher volume
than
the other, so in theory, the Loup should be more cushy, but don't
know if I
will notice a diff between the tires, being as they are both wide and
if
they can both be ridden at 50psi.

If you think you will not notice the difference between 32 and 38 all
I
can say is Ha Ha Ha Ha! My VO Randonneur has 32s. My 650B bikes
have 38s
or 42s. Not even close. .38 special vs .45 ACP.

  Any info is appreciated.
Also interested to see what a sub-300 gram tire (Cypres) feels like
to
 ride.

The Cypres is a lovely tire for a 700C bike. Right in the sweet spot
for
 that size wheel.

Not sure if any of this will even make a difference for an un-racer
like
 me.

You will ride with comfort and pleasure on unpaved and badly cracked
and
broken up pavement where your friends on their racing bikes will be
cursing
on the raggedy edge of pain and loss of control.

It is neither. The seagull is flat. Flat is maybe 1,000 feet of
elevation for 100 miles. The IH100 has 2 1/2 to 3 times more elevation
gain than that. But by real-world standards, where an average century
has between 5,000 - 6,000 feet of elevation gain, the IH100 is
comparatively easy, having roughly half that much elevation gain.

If you are worried about the full IH100, there's a 100k option; or, if
you want more than that, it's easy to make your own shortcut 80 mile
version that eliminates most of the elevation gain. I had to do that a
couple of years ago when my right hand shifter failed, and was only
willing to give me two clicks' worth of travel (even in friction mode!).

Re: [RBW] Re: Velocity Service!

2014-08-31 Thread George Schick
OK, thanks for the photos and info. First of all, my Velocity OC's were
made in Australia. As I said, I've had 'em for about 10 years, by have no
idea how long they might've been sitting around in the retailer's stock
before building. Secondly, they do not have ferruled spoke holes like the
ones in the photos - they're just plain holes drilled through the rims.
Can't remember what they look like on the inside since it's been a long
time since I've had the rim strip off (if ever). Finally, I didn't find
any cracks around the spoke holes, but I find what appeared to be vertical
cracks on the rim's brake surface so I went all the way around both sides
with fine 400 grit sand paper to remove brake pad residue and get a better
look - they all turned out to just be shallow scratches from something.

Was there a time frame when the Velocity people produced an excellent
quality product and then a period where they when down hill for a while and
then back to normal again at a later date?

[RBW] Re: Velocity Service!

2014-08-31 Thread George Schick
My bad. After taking a look at the pic's from you and Steve and another
look at my rims (and a bit of Web research) I realized that I have the
Velocity Aerohead OC rims, not the Synergy. Can't recall exactly what
happened, but the labels got removed from my rims some time ago.
Apparently, the Aerohead's did not have the same problems as the Synergy's.

George: The crack was in the rim sidewall. By the way, I rode the new
wheel today and it was fine.

Bruce - exactly where on the rim did this separation crack appear?
Around the spoke holes? I have an OC that's been on the rear of one of
my bikes for about 10 years. Don't know how many total miles are on it,
but I'll need to check it for cracks if this is a known problem.

Two weekends ago, while changing a worn tire, I noticed a
rim separation crack in my Velocity Synergy OC rear wheel. This wheel had
6,000 or so miles and had not shown any prior problems. I contacted
Velocity and answered a few of their questions about the type of use and
typical loading. In a day or two they got back to me with a return
authorization and I sent via UPS after removing the skewer and cassette.
They received it last weds and yesterday it arrived back at my house. The
rim was replaced with a new non OC rim, they put in new DB (DT Swiss)
spokes and new brass (nickel plated) nipples. The rim spins true and the
guy who built it put his sticker inside too. His name is Bruce :).

Fast service and they did not ask for payment for the other items beyond
the rim. I am very pleased with Velocity's response. (I have velocity rims
of one model or another on 5 sets of wheels.)

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-08-31 Thread BSWP
Thanks, all, especially for the links to beautiful frames.

I'm deducing that 42mm tires will fit past the pads on Paul Racers. Anyone
run wider tires than that with those brakes? They're probably not a first
choice for mountain bike setups... 38 is pretty wide for me, but I could
consider 42-45 for some situations.

I have a B17 Flyer with a Carradice saddle bag strapped to the saddle loops.
I am wondering what works well with this set up. Thanks.

I like the ubiquitous plastic grocery bag. Hoard a few before they are
outlawed everywhere.

Hey group,

So I thought I loved the Albastache bars but realized I love the Albatross bars

180mm or 225mm quill length if you happen to have that stuff laying around.

Thanks,
