[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for saddle covers?

2014-09-01 Thread Kyle Brooks
I have a lot of Brooks saddles on a lot of bikes, and I use a couple
different solutions. I got an actual Brooks rain cover when I ordered one
of the nice, super-deluxe, titanium-railed Brooks saddles -- it was packed
in the box, along with a little tin of Proofide. I keep that cover rolled
up in one of the pockets of my Carradice saddle bag on my commuting bike
and slip it on if it starts to rain. But I only have that one official
cover. Otherwise, I keep a plastic shopping bag and a couple of big rubber
bands tucked away on other bikes. They roll up compactly into a saddle
pack. It doesn't look as nice as the official Brooks cover, but it works
just fine.

[RBW] Re: Velocity Service!

2014-09-01 Thread WMdeR
Dear Mike,

6,000mi is not my typical rim life!

If I don't whack a rear wheel on a rock or pothole or something, it takes
two or three years (20-30,000mi) to wear the front brake track to
half-depth for a bike used on roads (paved or otherwise). Rear rims are
basically along for the ride, and get replaced when I wear a front rim out
due to caution on my part.

The 650B Synergy OC rims have a known cracking problem (a problem not
shared by the A-23 OC rims in 650B or 700C). Building the rim into the
wheel is part of the expense of using a rim--why shouldn't they make you
whole for a known defect, while making sure that the build meets their
build specs (to prevent a repeated warranty claim with a presumably fixed
product)?

I've got a set of cracked 650B Synergy OC rims, but those cracks appeared a
few months after build, and haven't gotten bigger in two years of
mixed-road riding. They're on my guest bike now, so don't see much use.

Best,

Will

2014-09-01 Thread 'peech1...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch
Aardvark (I believe that is the brand name, and I believe that is what
Rivendell sold) is what I use. When I transport my bike in the rain I
cover with the seat with the Aardvark, then cover that with a plastic bag,
then duct tape over the plastic bag to prevent the Aardvark from blowing
off. In heavy rain I'll ride on the Aardvark but generally one doesn't
have to do that if you stay seated. Aardvark works well when the bike is
parked in the rain.

[RBW] Re: Replace 27 wheels with 700c or 650b? Brakes = Silvers

2014-09-01 Thread Peter Adler
I'm attempting a similar 27-to-650b conversion at the moment, with Silvers
on a 1972 Raleigh Super Course. Early indications are that 700c is fine,
but there may not be enough reach to make it out to 650b. As for the nutted
brakes: I picked up my recessed Silvers at a Riv garage sale a couple of
years ago (missing the attachment fittings for the QRs, which I
cannibalized off salvaged brakes from bike kitchens). At the last Riv
garage sale in July, I found several pairs of huge Tektro sidepulls that
Grant IDed as parts for some abandoned project; Tektro lists them for beach
cruisers. Fortunately, they had nutted bolts, and Riv was selling them for
$5/pair. The bolts were not easy to get out of the brakes, but they fit the
Silvers just fine.

On Thursday, August 28, 2014 5:12:13 PM UTC-7, franklyn wrote:

Actually, the Silver/Tektro 559 might not work with 700c wheels, unless
the reach for 700c on the frameset is longer than 55mm. So you really need
to determine the wheel size first before selecting the brakes. Also, unless
you can score brakes that uses nut instead of recessed allen, you will have
to drill the frameset to use most recess-allen-equipped brake calipers. I
tend to use center-pull brakes for these conversions for easy and
inexpensive sourcing, as well as better braking power.

[RBW] Re: How the Heck Do I Attach Photos?

2014-09-01 Thread Call Me Jay
Jim,

To the extent that it helps others, I think that I discovered the source of
my newbie posting woes. My Safari browser was somehow loading the mobile
iOS version of the site on my Mac. Not sure how this happened (maybe it
was syncing to my phone) but after I searched for the site and then added a
new bookmark for the Bunch, all of the functionality that you described is
now visible and usable. Thanks again.

On Friday, August 29, 2014 1:34:30 PM UTC-4, Cyclofiend Jim wrote:

Recently, there have been a number of new group members (and some
silverbacks...) who have been flummoxed by the non-intuitive way you add
images (photos) to a post. In addition to the posts I've passed through,
there have been several each week for the past few months.

In the past, we had a socially agreed upon tenet of _NOT_ posting images
directly to the group, as many members accessed the group through email and
dial-up connections. It impacted connection times for many members
needlessly, as some folks simply didn't view the images on certain threads,
yet had to wait while they downloaded. While email-only access is still a
widely-used choice, the latter has become less and less of an issue. Of
course, mobile devices do keep this relevant.

I still don't think it's particularly courteous to other group members to
inflict a slow-churn of downloading 8 or 10 high resolution images by
attaching them to threads they may or may not be following. In my mind,
new bike images, epic ride chronicling and things like that should be
posted separately to Flickr (TERAbytes for free!) Picasa, Google drive,
cloud storage, etc. There are so many posting options now, it's kind of
 mind boggling.

But one or two teaser images, with a link to the rest, seems alright to
 me.

I strongly feel that FOR SALE images should be shared in that manner (i.e.
NOT attached, but with a link to the images) as well. Again, not a
stamp-my-foot-and-delete-a-thread opinion, just that most group members
aren't interested in what you have for sale. A link to images seems much
 more appropriate there.

However, as we are having more technical discussions, often members are
supplying specific phone-snapped images which provide an excellent answer
to the question. And it's these which deserve to be in threads, enhancing
 the discussions.

With that in mind, here's how you do it. Illustrated with images

Step One - when you post or reply to a post, you should see a little
skuemorphic paper clip doohickey. To the right of that will be the magic
 words Attach a File

 Click on that.

Step Two - you should get an upload window, and you can drag and drop
(with certain...well, most... browsers) and an option to select from your
 computer.

Now, some of that functionality won't necessarily work from iOS or Android
OS's. So, there's that. Maybe someone can share an image to this thread
from their iPhone, iPad or Android device.

 Hope that helps!

 - Jim / list admin / cyclofiend.com

Re: [RBW] All Rounder available - help me before it disappears

2014-09-01 Thread cyclotourist
Bill beat me to it:

Larry, can you confirm the PBH of 59? 89 would be more appropriate for a
59cm frame.

The bike looks to be a Waterford built All-Rounder. Great bikes, but they
don't command the price that Stark/Nobilette/Goodrich-made, Bell-painted
custom frames do.

Someone correct me if I'm off, but I would guess $1200 if it has Asian
components, $1500-$1800 if shiny bits with the name White, Chris, Phil or
Paul on it.

Some shops do indeed have a reputation for charging a premium price and not
budging on it. That of course is their prerogative.

[RBW] Re: All Rounder available - help me before it disappears

2014-09-01 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey there Larry -

Re: your second point - I'm guessing you mean you have a 89 cm PBH? That
would put you in the 59 cm frame range. That's a pretty safe guess for
the frame size on that model.

From those photos, it honestly looks a little bigger than a 59 - the
perspective of the images may be playing a trick on my eyes, but that head
tube looks a little long for a 59. Also, the saddle would be a take-off
for me (and it doesn't look expensive). And it may be the resolution of
the photo, but I cannot really see a rear or front derailleur on that, so
it looks like you are just getting the frame.

The A/R is close to an Atlantis, in terms of geometry, if that helps in
sizing. There are about five A/R's posted in the Gallery, if that helps:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/cc-maker.html#rivendell

And some more early model background here:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/gen1/

What is he asking for it?

best of luck!

 1. Solely from talking to other bike shops it seems the proprietor has a
reputation over-pricing his used bikes. With the understanding that
various regions and markets value bikes differently, what would be a
reasonable price for a 1995 All Rounder on the east coast?

 2. I can't for the life of me find a sizing chart for the All Rounder. I
 have a 59 PBH. Reading this http://www.rivbike.com/kb_results.asp?ID=41,
which is very general, indicates that I could fit a 59cm but it would be on
the small side. Any help with sizing would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

So if he is charging more than the year of your birth, ask for the

The shop owner said I could have it for a birthday price, same price as

He said I could bring the oldest person with me that I could find and he'd

2014-09-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
I see no reason to use a cover while I am riding in the rain, after all, I
am sitting on the saddle so how wet can it get. I use a cover when
transporting a bike, bikes, or the tandem. So I want the most waterproof
and least likely to come off. I have found that both the stretchy type RBW
sells and tied on plastic bags can come off, especially on the tandem which
rides on top of the car. The Brooks covers have both a compression cord
and and a velcro loop that goes under the rail. Totally waterproof
stable. Riv should sell them.

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2014-09-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
Bill, a lot depends on what size tires you are using. I converted my Ram
from Ultegra side pulls to Paul's Racer Ms and was very happy with the
outcome. Setup and maintenance is a similar amount of effort, Paul's get a
slight nod for power and modulation, but a big plus for fender clearance.
I have studded Racers on the Tandem. They work well and seem to require
little attention, but they are limited to about a 38 mm tire, unless it is
deflated. And they have only 55 mm of internal space specced for a fender,
although I have gotten them to work with 60 mm VO fenders.

You'll get lots of subjective feedback but Paul's CPs have beefier arms
which have to be more rigid than a side pull and the brakes will last for
ever. Paul sells pivots and springs independently so it is easy to rebuild
a brake.

My favorite brake, hands down, is Paul's Neo Retros. They excel in every
way. About the only negative I can think of is that like all cantis they
get dirty.

I respond to this portion. I made this exact swap from Silver side pulls

had from a Bleriot. They set up SUPER easy, look great and I used up to a
42 width knobbie (IRC XC Slick 700x42) that I could still squeeze past the
pads with little effort. I only upgraded to the Pauls thinking that with
all the hype and expense, they HAD to be more powerful and would open
wider. I tinkered with those things more than any other brake I've ever
used and never got them to feel as good as the Silvers, and if anything
they opened up less as I had to wiggle the same tire set up pretty good to
get it through. They certainly weren't horrible, look kind of industrially
cool, and have the USA factor included in the price, but based purely on
performance and set up I would choose the Silvers no question.

[RBW] Quickbeam 52cm?

2014-09-01 Thread DS
Leaning heavily towards a Quickbeam for my next bike. Pending finding one
in my size that someone wants to sell of course. Trying to figure out:

1. sizing - What size quickbeam for an 80 PBH? I see a few links around
that have PBH and frame sizes but they tend to be bigger frame sizes and
pbh. After some searching I seem to remember seeing someone with a 52cm
frame and an 80 PBH.
2. availability - were the 50 and 52 frame sizes only available in
Silver/650b? Did any of the other production runs include those sizes? I'm
drawn to the Orange color, but don't want to get my hopes up if it was
never made in my size.
3. Sam Hillborne - would this be a good alternative to be built up as a
similar 2 speed single / fixie like a quickbeam? I guess this question is
very subjective and no reason I couldn't, but would it need a tensioner?
What are the disadvantages other than having to use spacers and possibly a
tensioner?

On a side note, if anyone has a 52cm Quickbeam they're thinking of parting
with let me know. I can buy now, but early next year would be better.

On a total side note, best overheard line this weekend while out riding:
So you're telling me I also need a *single speed* cross bike too? #$@!:

According to my geometry chart (not sure where online I captured it from),
the 54 is the smallest listed, and it has a stand over height of 79.2. So
you should be find with a size 54 cm and then play around with the stem to
get your reach right. Top tube is 56. I am similarly fit to my 66 cm
Quickbeam, with a PBH of 90 and a stand over height of 90.6.

According to my geometry chart (not sure where online I captured it from),
the 54 is the smallest listed, and it has a stand over height of 79.2. So
you should be find with a size 54 cm and then play around with the stem to
get your reach right. Top tube is 56. I am similarly fit to my 66 cm
Quickbeam, with a PBH of 90 and a stand over height of 90.6.

pbh. After some searching I seem to remember seeing someone with a 52cm
 frame and an 80 PBH.

Silver/650b? Did any of the other production runs include those sizes? I'm

 3. Sam Hillborne - would this be a good alternative to be built up as a
similar 2 speed single / fixie like a quickbeam? I guess this question is
very subjective and no reason I couldn't, but would it need a tensioner?
What are the disadvantages other than having to use spacers and possibly a
 tensioner?

On a side note, if anyone has a 52cm Quickbeam they're thinking of
parting with let me know. I can buy now, but early next year would be
 better.

So you're telling me I also need a *single speed* cross bike too? #$@!:

I am fairly certain that at least one run of quickbeams included a 650B 52cm
frame. If you search you will find photos. I suspect they are rare as hens
teeth though. Probably worth calling RBW to make sure they don't have a
leftover hiding in the attic.

I ride trails with mine all the time and have a blast. Never had an issue
because of the frame being on the tall side of my riding window, and yes,
I've needed to hop off a time or two. Here's proof of the fun:

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam 52cm?

2014-09-01 Thread JL
I have an 80cm PBH and ride a 54cm Quickbeam. To my measurements a 52 would be
too small and cramped for drops and certainly so for upright bars. I think all
the runs of the Quickbeam included a 54cm size. If you decide to change your
sizing up you will have access to the orange models and 700c wheels.
