For all the fetishism around handmade, it seems to be a common excuse for
sloppiness and poor quality control. That said, I enjoy my Brooks saddles, and
tolerate their quirks.

I believe the 55 has a shorter 57.5 cm effective top tube versus the 59 cm top
tube on the 56. I'm not 100% positive on those specs however.

I own three Brooks B17-type saddles. Two have developed deformities in the
leather. I still ride them, but they are clearly deformed. My next leather
saddle will be from a competitor, maybe a Berthoud, if I can wrap my head
around the price.

David said it. Get rid of the Tektro front brake. I know people say they should
work with those fenders, but the reality is the clearance isn't there.

I love the look of metal fenders and hope to have them one day, but hearing
installation discussions like these terrifies me. I take long enough to put on
the sks longboards, cursing and adjusting along the way.
Give me a ten minute bike job and I'll make it an hour,

Edwin, it's true that aluminum fenders take a lot more finessing to get
right than SKS chromoplastics, or Planet Bike polycarbonates, but because
they're malleable you can actually get them to do what you want. I can't
ever get a perfect fender line with the plastic fenders, and have to rely

Yep. The deal there IMHO
I believe you are correct. The chainstays on my early model 56cm Atlantis
(over 10 years old) measure about 44.5cm. I've always thought that was a
little short for chainstays on a touring bike, so making them a little
longer was probably a good idea. That said, I've never had a problem with
First off, this isn't necessarily Riv-related, or even bike-related

Yeah, 46cm chainstays on the 26 Atlantis would bring it in line with the 26
Hunqapillar and 26 Surly LHT. I did read on this site that 700c chainstays
are now 47-48cm, so I guess it would make sense to lengthen the 26 models as
well.

Thanks, all. I will probably try to have it sewed, either someone else with
a heavy machine, or do it myself by hand with button thread. Two pop rivets
would fit, but would look odd.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to strike a balance really, and I do enjoy
