Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue
This just in: from the VO blog. Obviously rigorous, high and pure science. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNedIJBZpgMfeature=youtu.be Seriously, if not exactly rigorous or pure, still interesting. (The rigor is at the level of the BQ observations: anecdotal, but still informative.) For my own particular purposes, the key remarks are at the end: forget racing, but when you ride fixed, or even if you tend to mash rather than spin, or hells, even when you are spinning hard as you accelerate, you not infrequently find yourself pulling up rather hard, or at least, pulling around with some energy. Certainly you do so when climbing steep hills, but also simply when accelerating, seated as well as standing, as when, sitting, you accelerate hard to make a light. At least, I myself *do* pedal in circles to some extent when, sprinting to make a light or trying vainly to impress onlookers. On Thu, Jun 11, 2015 at 4:28 AM, Richard rlh3...@gmail.com wrote: You said it Patrick, the ability to move ones feet while riding is a huge benefit. Even slight movements make a big difference. I don't get BQ's opening the lid analogy, nor do I understand this statement When my feet are firmly attached to the pedals, I may not actually pull up, but I am using the pedal that is moving upward as a fixed point to push against with my downstroke leg. What? How can the upward moving pedal be a fixed point to push against? I'm not against clipless, I used them for many years, but the arguments in favor of, aren't convincing to me anymore. I know I'm in the minority here, but switching to platform pedals with pins has changed my mind about the need for foot retention for any type of riding. Just my experience, take it with a grain of salt. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Question re Decal Removal
That's Grant's thing. The flash studio they did a couple years ago in San Francisco had what has to be the most scratched up Rivendell in existence hanging proudly on the wall (I think it was Spencer's, as shown in an early Reader). [RBW] How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
Hi y'all, Want to try a Shimano 7speed cassette with tight spacing I like on my Blue Sam. How can I tell if I need a 4.5 spacer or not with my freehub? It's an RBW stock 650b wheelset Velocity hub with a Shimano compatible freehub that came stock with 9 speed cassette, then I went to 8-speed. [RBW] Re: How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
You'll need the spacer. 8-speed is almost identical spacing to 7, they simply lengthened the freehub and added a cog. From there the spacing got narrowed as the 9th and later 10th cogs were added so that all three fit on the same body that started with 8. Shorter version: We have 7-speed freehubs and 8/9/10-speed freehubs. Re: [RBW] Re: Searching for a cheapo saddle with B17 like fit
I just picked up a shockingly immaculate '98-ish Bianchi Osprey mtb (welcome to Marin County, where thousands of mountain bikes were ridden once, then put away in nice, temperature controlled homes), and it has an equally untouched WTB Speed V..droop nose, 145mm width, looks like every SST I've ever seen. Re: [RBW] Stem length considerations
Stem length, or rather effective reach, is affected by bar height and by bar shape as well. A few years ago, after having ridden for years with Nitto 185 (short reach, deepish drop) bars on 8 cm stems 6 cm or so below saddle, I switched to Maes Parallel bars with a much longer reach (115 versus 90) and shallower drop (125 versus 140) 3 cm below saddle. The reach from saddle nose to points of brake hoods remains almost the same, and I am just about as far over the tire when on hoods or in hooks, but I'm also more upright. Also, as you move from flats to ramps to hoods to hooks, your weight moves forward. I'll add to the fit equation: get the right frame, then *get the saddle in the right place: up and down/fore and aft;* and in third place choose your stem for the right bar position. FWIW, my 2 remaining Rivs are perfect with 8 cm stems and the Maes Parallels 3 cm below saddle. [RBW] Re: In praise of the Big Apple 26
When the Big Apples wear out, I can recommend the Super Moto, much like the Big Apples but lighter and faster because there's no puncture protection layer. So far I have had no problems with my 26/559 mm tires - there's no thorns here, but I do a lot of fast riding on sharp gravel, long sections with fist-sized blocky rocks, and tarmac with broken glass. No punctures so far, and I'm on the third (or is it maybe the fourth?) year of riding. I was planning to buy the Big Apple, but the Super Moto had just been available and I went for it. For me, where I live and ride, puncture protection seems unnecessary for tires 42 mm and the lower pressures that comes with them. I once tried 32 mm thin, lightweight tires without any puncture protection and got 10 punctures in 14 days (always small glass pieces). With Grand Bois Hetres I had one puncture in two or three years under the same riding conditions. Re: [RBW] WTB: 56 Double Tube Sam
IIRC, the tt on my single tt 56 cm SH was 59 -- that must be right, since my normal road tt choice is about 57 and I know that I had to put the bar on the SH much higher than I like to get the bar close enough to fit (many variables here, but the long tt was one reason I sold the Sam). I'm not knocking 2X tts; just asking what purpose it serves on a 56 cm frame (or 58 or 60, for that matter), for the sort of riding most of us use it for? I do recall riders of larger 2 tt Bombadils describing the nimble feel of the bike. Meshing this thread with another recent one, stem length and weight over front wheel and handling: One reason I sold my SH was that, when climbing seated, without a rear load, but especially with one, the front end wagged all over the road. I daresay that one factor was my high bar, which didn't allow sufficient front wheel weight. At any rate, if the SH could take 60 mm tires, I'd probably still own one. It would have made a nice alternative to my Fargo in that case. (Even with 2 tts.) Re: [RBW] How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
I ran a home-made 7 sp cassette on a 8/9/10 sp Ultegra hub by intalling spacers at each end (near spokes and near lockring). I think I just used spare spacers from my cog box, 7 or 8 speed ones. It worked fine. Note: sometimes if your spacers (or cassette as a whole) are a wee bit too thick, you can get by if you choose a lockring with deeper threads. Torque IME gets everything back to normal width specs. That's what I do with my current home-made 9 sp, where many of the cogs are thicker 7 or 8 sp types. Re: [RBW] WTB: 56 Double Tube Sam
I own a 2TT Sam Hillborne and have had a single TT. Both worked great. My 2TT SH works better than all my other Riv bikes. Less handlebar shimmy for sure. Maybe those 2TT provide less flex. Another benefit of the 2TT's is that you can place a full size frame pump between the tubes and it doesn't get in the way when you pick up your bike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Skimming through the thread I picked up on SST. I nabbed a cheaper OEM takeoff at my LBS a while back. I'm definitely not in the camp of likers. [RBW] Re: How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
Basically any freehub currently sold will be 8-9-10 speed compatible or 11-speed if it is higher end road. 7 speed freehubs were only produced for a short period of time, so unless you're buying a used wheelset it's unlikely you'll end up with one. A wheel stocked LBS should have a spacer specifically designed for this purpose, for when they have to replace a wheel on a 7 speed cassette bike. Wheels Manufacturing makes one.
