These are fantastic! Someone buy that 53cm roadeo and then sell it to me in
a few years.

Has anyone seen a 52cm AHH demo? I've never seen a 52 or 54cm at HQ, but
haven't been to BHH for a long time and not sure if they ever had one. That
would be the golden ticket for me.

[RBW] Re: How much can Betty handle?

2016-01-25 Thread Mobile Bill
well, thanks, and I remain as uncertain as ever. I read that mixes, with
the three pairs of stays converging at the dropout, are supposed to
overcome some or more of the torque issues associated with typical

but I still worry I would have overloaded with the big bag, perhaps for the
reason Michael implied: That one big bag would have been floating on top of
the rack, rather than hanging off either side. Perhaps it is time to invest

Re: [RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-25 Thread Patrick Kelly
Hugh,

Well, it is almost "mine" since that's the same size and color that I
ordered. A big reason I wanted to go check it out in person.

When I decided to order one, I knew that the bars would be a question.
But I figured that if it turns out I don't like them, I'll just
replace them. Given the bargain price it seemed like a pretty low risk
thing to me. One thing I definitely do like is that it's possible to
use the forward position on them. I never felt that was really
possible with the bosco bars. The choco bars are more like the
moustache that way, but they use mountain levers which i prefer.

I can't really say much about the "feel" of the bike, and certainly
don't notice anything special with the long chainstays. The thing I
noticed about the "feel" of the bike was how cushy the ride is. But
that's basically all because of the fat, low pressure tires. Maybe
it's partially cuz of the longer wheelbase, but that's impossible to
say without riding side-by-side on a shorter bike with the same tires
at the same pressure.

I did try to do some tight turns and loops to see if I noticed a
smaller turning radius, but wasn't really hampered by the long
wheelbase. Keeping knees out of the way of the bars is more of an
issue than the length. Again, if I had another shorter bike to compare
side by side, perhaps I'd be more sensitive, but it seemed pretty
normal to me.

I'm hoping that the longer chain stays will help with my climbing. On
my current bike (not a riv) when I'm climbing, the front wheel comes
up too much, so I lose my ability to steer from time to time. My
theory/bet is that this will not happen on a joe appaloosa. :)

2016-01-25 Thread Tim Gavin
Bob-

It's nice to hear you're doing RAGBRAI again this year. We met two years
ago, on my first RAGBRAI (I have a red Riv Road/650b).

I'm not sure what my plan will be for RAGBRAI. I'm not riding the entire
week, probably just the last 3 days. If we're riding light, I'll probably
be on my new-to-me Roadeo. If we're riding loaded, I'll be on my Riv Road.

Last year's route went right by where I live, so we were able to ride from
home and do 4 days.

Your route looks pretty good from Muscatine to Milwaukee. There are
excellent trails around and through Madison, WI, and it's a lovely town to
visit.

I'll see if my girlfriend or her dad are interested in riding with you.
Your first day from Muscatine to Clinton looks nice. The Illinois side of
the river would likely have less traffic than the Iowa side, between
Davenport and Clinton.

[RBW] Re: XT Rear hub 135 to 130mm respacing?

2016-01-25 Thread Jeremy Till
It should also be noted that respacing your hub by removing spacers on the
non-drive side will require the wheel to be redished to keep the rim
centered in the frame. You will be increasing the dish and thus the
tension differential between drive and non-drive side spokes. Another
reason to maybe consult with an LBS with a competent wheel guy/gal, to see
if they think it's a good idea with your current spoke lengths and tension.

Re: [RBW] After RAGBRAI 2016 - Muscatine to Milwaukee WI

2016-01-25 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I've thinking of switching Janesville with Evansville because it's smaller,
but it'll be somewhere near there. the Fort Atkinson bit is really based on
the fact that as a youth I saw Bill Camplin play a billion times in local
bars and other venues and he and his spouse own a place there. I'm hoping
he's playing the night I go through (and I'm going to email to see if he's
even in town) and if so, may invite my HS buddies out for a evening of it.

I'm fine with gravel - having just done GAP/C last summer. The GAP was
really well maintained but when we went the C was mostly mud and gravel.
We made good time in spite of it so I don't really have concerns riding my
Friday (with 20" Big Apples at the moment).

Planning these things is really a big part of the fun as far as I'm
concerned.

My current plan is to stay in motels along the way, after a week of camping
in Iowa it'll be nice and because I can' rent my tent and such for RAGBRAI
I won't have to carry as much gear. I'll actually be shipping the suitcase
my Friday flies in along with clothes for the reunion from the RAGBRAI
start point to Milwaukee and taking as little as possible with me along the
way. After two previous RAGBRAIS I pretty much know what I need to take and
what I never actually used. I did the GAP/C with only two front bags on
my Friday and still had too much stuff, so light is good.

While I realize my Friday has nothing to do with Riv, it has been to RBW
Headquarters twice. :-)

Aloha!

[RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-25 Thread hsmitham
Hi Patrick,

I just went through your images and I have to remark, that is a sweet
looking machine or better stated a fine steed indeed. The color is
gorgeous. Very good build.

On handle bars, I've never felt comfortable with that type of bar almost
too upright for me. But one's comfort is so subjective. For an upright bar
the Albatross are still my favorite, but I've since gone back to a drop bar
on my Hilsen. Actually a modified drop the Soma Portola's. They took a bit
of adjustment but now feel wonderful, though if I was designing a new bar
I'd have the ramps shorter. Probably one of the Salsa bars is already like
that but I didn't want to deal with the whole 31.8 clamp deal. I've heard
that "Riv" and Nitto are working on a new flared drop bar but that's just a
rumor that I can't substantiate.

Anyway, this is about your Joe Appaloosa not my handle bar preference. I
love it! I love the downtube script. Doesn't it have longer chainstays? How
does the ride feel compared to other bikes?

A new bike day is something to savor so enjoy in good health and many great
miles.

Best Regards,

~Hugh

Re: [RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

I didn't make note of exactly what those tires are. They are not the
stock tires that will come with the bikes. I think they are 2.2". At
least 2.1". They looked to me to be the fattest you could possibly fit
on the bike. (Didn't get a good photo, but there is about zero
clearance between the chain stays with those tires.) I didn't pay much
attention to them cuz I know they're only on there for fun/demo.

Looking at one of the photos, it looks like they are "continental
retroride" tires.

I think Deacon has it about right. If you look at the Riv PDF Clem Brochure

Re: [RBW] After RAGBRAI 2016 - Muscatine to Milwaukee WI

2016-01-25 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Great to hear from you and yes, I remember. I can't wait to see your Rodeo.
I'll be on my trusty Friday again - at least that's the plan at the moment.

I'll be spending a day in Muscatine when RAGBRAI finsishes so perhaps we
can get together for bite on Saturday if you've time before heading back
home. Last time around I had to hop on a bus back to Omaha almost as soon
as the ride ended.

As for Madison, my fondest memory of the place is getting trapped there
with some old high school friends in the middle of snow storm after
visiting colleges Minneapolis/St. Paul. As we stayed with a guy who'd
already graduated and was attending UW Madison and worked at a pizza place
that didn't close for the snow we had a great time.

I've been told the Illinois side is likely less trafficed before so I'll
keep it in mind. I haven't really done much research on the route yet, just
a google map of possibles. Doug suggested the WI Bike Federation maps for
the WI portion and I'll be getting those soon and it should help me figure
out where to enter WI and where to go from there.

Most of the WI riding I did was in and around Milwaukee and that was, um,
many years ago. I was back about 7 or 8 years but didn't have the
opportunity for any cycling.

Aloha,

Bob

[RBW] Re: Seeking Alejandro

2016-01-25 Thread hsmitham
Hi Tom,

I was at the grocery store the other day and witnessed three young (by my
standards) folks on bikes obviously homeless, two women and man. I felt so
sad for them! I feel so blessed to have come from a caring loving family,
gainfully employed with a roof over my head. I heard recently that Los
Angeles tops out as having the greatest number of homeless in the country
as of November of 2015 according to this LA Times

article. I don't have the answer it's a tough one. When I think about the
solution, give them tiny houses I figure human nature is to say NIMBY and
on the other side of the fence you're just creating Getto's! There are
those homeless that don't want to be fenced in and refuse to conform and
then those that are mentally ill and realistically need to be in some form
of treatment.

I think it's admirable that you and your neighbors go out and help
Alejandro Tom.

I think there is an underlying problem in our country that I think gets
swept under the proverbial rug. Homelessness is just the manifestation of
that underlying issue.

Thanks for posting about Alejandro Tom and I hope and pray he's okay.

Best regards,

~Hugh

[RBW] Re: How much can Betty handle?

2016-01-25 Thread Michael Hechmer
I don't think an occasional 230 lbs will unduly stress a Betty. However if
it were me I would try to spread the weight between the front, rear and
both sides. I think repeatedly putting that much weight entirely on the
rear, especially unbalanced side to side could not be good for any bike,
even a cargo bike. Perhaps you might consider a trailer if you do grocery
shopping with it often.

[RBW] Seeking Alejandro

2016-01-25 Thread BenG
The Canada geese will be fine. They stay in our cold area year-round now, using
neighborhood ponds, golf courses, harvested fields. I didn't realize the
southwest was on one of their flyways. I would winter there if I could, too.
My brother-in-law the psychiatrist oversees all of the public resources for
psychiatric care in our area. He used to treat mentally ill folk whose
treatment is no longer subsidized. He says there is no safety net left for
many who used to get in-patient care. He also desperately needs psychiatrists,
and can't find one to hire into public care (provided at hospitals and a United
Way-funded center). Says his field is really short for help. As a specialty,
psychiatry is not attracting students.

[RBW] RR44, Will's page

2016-01-25 Thread Joe Bernard
Will has a "how working here has changed me" article in the Reader. I won't
spoil the whole thing 'cause BUY ONE, but I related to upright bars and not
being so obsessive about piling on miles. I like sitting up, going kinda slow
and just tooling around town. Rivendell's "just ride" philosophy has made me a
happier bike rider.

[RBW] Re: Back to the Drawing Board for Kid Bike

2016-01-25 Thread LeahFoy
Ok, ok, one last thing. Today was our first day commuting to school on The Red
Rocket. You guys, I'm giggling like an idiot on this keyboard as I type the
very words! Pre-Red Rocket we did this: I met the boys at school, deep sighs
from Lincoln as he mentally geared himself to pedal up that hill. Ethan and I
went at a decent pace while Lincoln fell behind, causing me to hang back and
coax him uphill. Eventually it would be too much for Linc and he and I would
have to stop and walk the bikes. Meanwhile Ethan, now blocks ahead, waited at
the top of the hill as passersby who saw him alone shook their heads and deemed
his parents negligent.

But TODAY: I met the boys at school. Lincoln said, "I'm nervous that I won't be
that fast on my new bike, Mom." I said we'd see but that I had a good feeling.
Invigorated by hope, Lincoln mounted The Red Rocket and shot up the hill,
pausing only for pedestrians and crossings. He hung with us and then broke away
at the archway, our designated watering spot. My older son (who stopped for
water) fought to catch him all the way until the final 50 feet before the
house. What a ride! We shaved 1/3 off our time. (30 minute commute, only 20
minutes today!) I think we are going to like our Islabike.

All is well once again! Thanks for all the help along the way.

If they're going to do a warranty repair, that's a tacit admission of a defect.
Is it common for a company to pay shipping both ways in this situation?

[RBW] Re: Seeking Alejandro

2016-01-25 Thread stonehog
This reminds me of a book I recently read after a blog post by Stephan
Guyenet (riv link - originally discovered him here based on Paleo
discussions). It's called Healing Back Pain, and here's the link in case
anyone here has had chronic postural muscle pain and can't seem to make
progress on a
fix: http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2015/12/healing-back-pain.html
Warning - it maintains that most back pain is psychosomatic in cause - not
caused by "lifting wrong" or "throwing your back out". Since it's an
election year and we're all geared up for controversy, this fits right in...

One area that stuck with me from the book was that modern medicine tends to
treat the human body as a machine - a physical symptom must have a physical
cause. It's hard to apply the scientific method most physicians are
trained on to psychiatric cause that may be inflicting the symptom. It's
like we just disregard a person's mental health as so much nonsense - it
couldn't seriously have anything to do with why someone is in physical pain.

It is sad that humans must go in cycles where we realize and make progress
on the mind/body connection, and then it falls out of favor. We lose so
much in these darker times.

[RBW] Re: Mid-Atlantic 2016 Snow

2016-01-25 Thread Tony DeFilippo

Great to hear about everyone else's experience with the snow! I'm still in
the 55% of unplowed residential streets in Alexandria though we do have
plowed primary and secondary streets close enough to walk to if we really
wanted to get out and about. Speaking of which I finished the re-build of
the XO-3 today. A highly utilitarian and not at all beautiful build but it
seems sound, brakes well and the studded tires are mostly not rubbing the
fenders so I'm going to say good enough! :) I made a quick ride up and
down the block (on hardpacked, unplowed snow) and did ok. Tomorrow I'm
hoping to get out and do a quick survey of my normal commuting route on the
Mount Vernon Trail before the rain comes in (scheduled for mid-day).
Federal Gov't is closed again tomorrow so I'll be teleworking but I'd like
to get an idea of whether a ride in on Wednesday is going to be feasible.
Any locals make it out on the Mount Vernon Trail? I've seen reports about
the W and Custis but no MVT reports... also curious about the 14th St
Bridge pedestrian path.

Shots of the XO-3;

Back to M-bar's seems fitting on the XO. Since I have more garage time
likely tomorrow afternoon I'll try to improvise some mud flaps for this
build and decide what luggage is going to be put in use. I'm fresh out of
Wald 137's so I'll need to fix that once Amazon starts delivering again.

Nokian/Suomi Mount and Ground 26x1.95" tires saw a bit of use last season
but not a whole lot. Still have nearly all the tread indicators attached
firmly.

>From yesterday, I don't know the cyclists but they were doing fine along Mt
Vernon Ave (different from the trail!) with regular tires.
