2016-02-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Back about 1995 I used to carry 2 NiteRider Cyclops lights, 15 watt
halogens each with a 2-lb battery. My Edeluxe I provides better road
illumination from 2.4 watts. And the newly ordered K-Lite dynamo light puts
out 600 lumens on Low and 1200 on High with a claimed 10 minute standlight.

FYI, at least some of the Motels 6 will kick you out and cancel your

apparently prositution busts are a regular occurrence at least at the midtown

[RBW] The joys of modern lighting... we've come a long way!

2016-02-10 Thread Julian

I came across a little book entitled "Cycling," by RC Shaw, printed in the
UK and copyright 1953. It's a neat window into the past.

In one section of the book, after a page or two outlining the drawbacks of
the comparatively primitive battery and dynamo lights of the day, Mr. Shaw
writes that “Although there is no doubt that, for reasonably long journeys
in the dark, the best kind of cycle lighting is that provided by acetylene
gas lamps, they are now very rarely used except by a minority of
enthusiastic riders who are prepared to give them the care and attention
essential for their proper working.”

And to think I've been glad my current LED battery and dynamo options work
so much better than the lights of only 10-15 years ago!

Preparing for a crisp commute in the bracing 6 degree F. air, but not
worrying much about the efficacy of my lights on the way home tonight, I

Just to clarify: the MUSA line is being scaled way back, not dropped. That

Whatever is kept, we will definitely be selling at Rivelo.

Doug,

You make an excellent point and believe me, I have thought I'd just pulling the
trigger and buying it. Hugh has always bought and/or created some of the best
high quality products and he takes great care of them. So it has crossed my
mind a few times. With that said, I already own 4 bikes and have been only
riding 2 of them frequently. I'm currently trying to decide whether to keep or
sell my Hillborne and Rodeo. Great bikes but they are not getting a lot of use

[RBW] Sorta FS post: Bags in Martexin Ranger Tan fabric.

2016-02-10 Thread David Banzer
Hello RBW-OBiers,
I have a lister interested in a bag in Martexin Ranger Tan waxed canvas to
match an Acorn bag: http://acornbags.com/
I'm looking into seeing if others might be interested in bags made of the
same fabric, either to match existing Acorn bags, or just because they like
the color.
So, for those interested, I'd offer any of my standard model bags:
treetop.bigcartel.com - to be made of the ranger tan waxed canvas, at the
same prices of my standard bags made of water-repellent canvas.
Martexin waxed canvas costs a lot more, so I'm offering this as a sort of
pre-order. Bags would ship within 4-5 weeks.
Ideally, I'd need at least 5 pre-ordered bags.
Contact me offlist if you're interested.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Stripped CLEM dropout braze-on

2016-02-10 Thread masmojo
For what it's worth, I have assembled almost every bike I own (which is a fair
number) & in my late teens I worked in a bike shop, so I probably built a
hundred or so bike during my stint there, but my Clementine was by far the most
difficult I ever had to deal with. A myriad of small little nit-picky, annoying
problems; aside from the tread issues mentioned above, I had a bottom bracket
that just did not like the theading on the Clementine BB!? The 135mm spacing
and log chainstays make mounting a rear rack somewhat challenging, some
eyelets seem oddly spaced, the wheel skewer hits on the derailleur when
removing the rear wheel, and a half dozen smaller little things that I don't
remember now.
On the plus side, when I got to building the second one, it went much
smoother! ;-)

What a beautiful machine, and I believe it would fit me perfectly. If not
for the fact that I still haven't finished building up my Clem frame that

Good luck selling her; can't wait to see its replacement.

Oh yeah, dropping the rear wheel out involves removing the nut on the skewer
because it gets stuck between the derailer and Breezer-style dropout. The
Clem/Clementine look and ride great, but they're definitely a challenge to

As I've been locking up my Clem around town, I added a security-type skewer

Re: [RBW] Re: My girlfriend just got a job at a bike shop!

2016-02-10 Thread Tim Gavin
I doubt that the bike shop will cover her expenses alone; she also serves
at a local brewpub (the excellent Lion Bridge brewery) and will continue to
do so for at least a couple nights a week.

I'll be paying my half of the rent and expenses as well, which helps.

Also, her grandfather just died (he was 94, so not a shock) and left her
the money which will be the down payment.

That said, property in the middle of the country is much less expensive
than on the coasts and/or major cities.
She's getting a 1600 sq/ft house for $130k (built 1911, just totally
refurbished--including a brand new 2+ car garage!)
Many of my friends have bought ~1100 sq/ft "starter homes" for much less
than $100k (built 1950s-60s).

Around here, the farm land is comparatively expensive. It is among the
best in the world, after all.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis vs. Sam

2016-02-10 Thread Mark Reimer
Between the two I'd say definitely get an Atlantis. An Atlantis can do
everything a Hillborne can, but not the other way around. You'll never be
bummed to have more clearance, but it always sucks to find out you can't
run a tire/fender combo because of a lack of clearance. The Atlantis is the
Riv crown jewel in my mind. Classic, timeless, beautiful, endlessly
versatile. With Barlow Pass 38's, my Atlantis isn't sluggish. It's no
spirited race bike mind you, but neither is a Hillborne. Point is, you can
be comfortable spinning away all day on that bike without feeling like
you're fighting against the frame. Just get one!

Update on Thunder Burts:

I've ridden the "light skin" TBs for about a week now and have been
surprised how much more supple they are than even the "snake skin". THat's
testing them out on the gnarly frozen slush on a walking trail, so it's
rougher than most and they are noticeably smoother than the snake skin
casing. No flats for a year on the snake skin for me last year, so I'll see
what they do this year. But ordering from Germany is well worth it. For six
tires we paid $36.33 a tire including shipping from

Thanks, Tim. I had all manner of spacers ready to go for the chainstay

I'm a tinkerer too, but much of it takes place in my mind. Actually doing
it can take a long time to get going. And as I say, I'mnot willing to set
aside as much time for it these days--would rather spend it riding with my
son. Though I will say that most of my favorite rides of the past 10 years
have been used frames that I built up from scratch. In fact, I have a
weird--it's not exactly an aversion, but a weird relationship with a brand
new bike, whether complete build or new frame and fork. I suspect
installing that rusty old stem shifter on my pristine new Clementine helped
alleviate my new bike phobia a little.

pump, Blackburn rear racks, a pair of 27" wheels, a boxed Suntour Cyclone
Mark II front der, misc chainrings, Thule rack and two upright mounts for a
Volvo XC90, (might have to trade +$ for that) Wald medium woodie basket, a
long-reach stem-mount for a Paul Flatbed rack, etc. All the fun stuff!
