Got it. Any way to secure the bag to the rack with a bungee around it,
down low? The idea at the bottom is to keep the bag from flapping outward
from the rack.

Doug, you know what? The rubber on the Specialized's tires IS dry and
brittle-feeling! We got the bike Easter of his 1st grade year and he is now a
5th grader. Yikes. Ok, I'll take it in this weekend. The Islabike is new and
should be fine. My tires are from 2012. I have wondered how I will know when
it's time. I don't think they feel as bad as the Specialized, though.

I'll take a closer look at the rack tomorrow, but I think I'm stuck. If I lower

It sits lower than the rack and there is nothing for it to grab onto. The

Re: [RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-31 Thread dougP
104 degrees, plus humidity! That's really tough. You guys are all troopers
but esp. those kids. That break in the shade looks inviting.

The loading problem is common when you have both panniers & a trunk bag or
saddlebag. The idea of the lower (second) set of rails on the rack is to
separate the side bags from the top bag. It sounds like the backabike ones
don't allow this? Do they go on the lower rail? Ideally you'd get one
kid's worth of school stuff in each pannier & have the front basket for
your stuff, maybe not have to mess with the saddlebag.

RE: kids bikes conditions: if those tires are typical kids bike tires &
they've been baking in the garage in southern Nevada for a few years it
would be wise to replace them, worn or not. Even if they hold air, the
rubber is aged & brittle. Look at it this way: $100 at the LBS is a lot
cheaper, more convenient & less stressful than a trip to the ER, and they
can check the rest of the bike over, i.e., brake cables, other crash
inducing stuff (ever seen a kid's pedal fall off?).

Even if you have to take the van part way, you & crew will be cycling away
from the madness. My wife & I do a regular ride on Wednesdays that takes
us by 2 schools. In our district, the kids are out at 1:30 on Wednesdays.
Nothing like massive SUVs and not-so-mini vans jockeying for pole position
in the kid pick-up zone.

With your exuberant, happy-go-lucky, slap-stick comedy on wheels you'll
have those cars lines down to nothing sooner than later! Grin.

You CAN use the SaddleSack with panniers, but the panniers are awkward to
access, so load them with stuff you don't mind having difficulty accessing
(aka when the saddlesack is less loaded, aka at home or school, but not
during the ride, if that makes sense). I've does this setup bikepacking and
loved it, just keeping stuff in the panniers I needed at camp.

Joe,

Thanks for the reminder to curb enthusiasm during assembly. :) I plan to
go slow and safe and make sure I do it right the first time. Hopefully, I
can stick to that plan. Also, with my AHH having the fenders, racks,
lights, etc. that were not on the video bike, I expect it to take a bit
more than the one hour dougP was able to do it in. But, it gives me
something to aspire to if I can also remain careful at the same time.

Sounds like the stars are lining up nicely. Rivendell does such a nice job
of building the bikes that IIRC all I needed was maybe some Allen wrenches
to assemble it. I know it was less than an hour from doorbell to out the
front door.

We'll be looking for full report, with pictures.:).

So, I got this email from Corey, aka BikePacker @ Riv. My AHH has
shipped! Yeah! :D Per another email, it might be here Friday. I guess I
might have a busy weekend and a very crowded living room. My folding Park

kit and a small set of general mechanics tools. My pedals only need an
allen wrench. I'm hoping I won't need any bike specialty tools to get the

And, just in time, my AWOL sold this morning, recouping a small fraction of

Update: Everything but the two wheelsets is sold. I'm giving a bump for
the dynamo wheelset before I go pull them apart to steal the hubs for
something else.

5. Wheelset #1. Bontrager Rims (32h, black with machined sidewalls +
eyelets). SP Dynamo front hub. Ultegra 6600 rear hub (130mm). DT 14/15
spokes, brass nipples. No Skewers. $200 shipped. $180 local pickup.
this wheelset is not in the picture of the complete bike.

The Rims are Bontrager Mustang. They have machined sidewalls and are
eyeleted and feature an asymmetric rear. In other words they are about as
nice as rim-brake rims ever got prior to the current situation where
rim-brakes are falling from fashion. 32 hole. DT 2.0/1.8/2.0 spokes,
brass nipples. Ultegra 8/9/10sp rear hub (130mm OLD). Shutter Precision
SV-8 dynamo front hub. Here are a few photos

There are a few more on my flickr. You should be able to scroll forward

What Jeremy says also misses the connection between low mechanical advantage
(necessitating more grip strength) and arm/hand fatigue. There's a reason why
systems only requiring one finger braking are highly prized for off road
riding, same would go for any situation in which a rider is braking often or
while fully loaded.

[RBW] Re: Behind seat tube frame pump / mount for Clementine 59

2016-08-31 Thread Zed Martinez
Hey again! I've been using a Topeak Road Morph G on mine, the provided
mounting bracket works a champ. I tried an HPX but couldn't find a
placement I liked on the Clem, and, if we're being honest, I like the mini
floor pump design of the Topeak better anyway.

Rixen & Kaul Pumpfix might help at one or both ends. Its a strap on pump
peg. I have one on the Jamis Coda and it is very secure.

Hard to find in the US though.

2016-08-31 Thread Garth
FWIW, by your stating the possibility of a 32f I assume you don't need the
second struts of a Marks rack so a M18 would also work for you.
Substantially less than a Marks, as low as $96 from Amazon.

Re: [RBW] Anyone riding the Indian Head 100 Century on Labor Day?

2016-08-31 Thread Steve Palincsar
It's a great ride. I'll be there. In fact, I'm heading up the group
that will be painting the road markings for the century later this
morning. However, if you have not already registered for the Indian
Head 100, you're too late: the rider limit was reached yesterday and
registration for the event has closed.

Looking for a Nitto front rack. Ideally a mark's rack. Possibly a 32f (though I
bought a used one a while back that never mated cleanly with any of my rivs, so
I'm slightly wary).
