[RBW] Re: front rack recommendations

2017-02-06 Thread Bin Chen
Hi Scott, yes though its technically the Nitto NR-21 (exactly the same except I
think 21 is meant for cantilever brake setups). And yes, Ultraswift bag size
small. It's quite stable as a saddle bag and perfect for grocery runs because
the rolltop expands so much.

The specialized "CG-R" aka "cobble gobbler" post is actually pretty cool. It
has lots of layback and you can feel it has some extra suspension. That link
about how iPhone changed orientation of photography is interesting and explains
why I am having that problem and I have noticed others on this forum keep
posting upside down pictures as well.

[RBW] Pacenti Pari-Moto "Gravel"

2017-02-06 Thread Eric Norris
I think these tires were mentioned on this list …

Anyway, forgive me for asking a dumb question, but are *all* Pari-Motos made
with the “gravel” casing? It’s hard to tell from the descriptions online:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/campyonlyguy/albums/72157680012676975/with/32353300930/

I’ve been having a very unlucky run with the Pari-Moto on the back of my
650B’ed Rivendell Road (3 flats in 3 rides), and I thought I read on this list
that the “gravel” casing is different and more flat-proof.

Thanks. Good to know! The "no-tool" approach is what sparked my interest on
these hubs. Your 1.5 years of use w/o maintenance under mixed conditions,
assuming average mileage use, is pretty good on anyone's standards. I
repack my cup and cone on my commuter every 6 months or so but not because
they need it. When its time to be serviced they (the hubs) will let you
know as those pawls in them will become louder.

A metallic grey Atlantis? Welcome to the club! (It's obviously not very

I did want a non-stock color on my Atlantis. I did not want to break the bank,

way to be a little bit original is to choose a 'stock option' color from
Waterford. He pointed me to about a dozen color choices on a webpage, and I
picked a metallic grey. He said all of those Waterford stock option colors are
small upcharges, like $100 or less. I'm not completely certain what the final
price will be, but I'm convinced that Rivendell just passes on whatever expense
they have to lay out to make it be the color you want. If it's a Waterford
color, it's fairly easy and cheap. If it's a D paintjob, it's hundreds of
dollars. If it's a Joe Bell paintjob, it is even more.

[RBW] Thanks for Breaking on a Dime Tip!

2017-02-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Since getting my new rims on the Hunqapillar, I’ve been fiddling with the
toe-in and squealing all the while. Then I found in Evernote the tip from
someone here to use a dime on the leading end of the brake pads to set the
toe-in properly”! After commandeering my two wee-est daughters to be my third
hand … silent brakes! Delicious! Great tip! Thanks!

With abandon,

Does the intended bike have eyelets that go all the way through the fork
blade? (like the fork on the left)
The Duo requires these for mounting. The Long Haul Trucker has these
eyelets, but not too many other bikes.

[RBW] Re: New Cheviot build shakedown ride

2017-02-06 Thread panog
Thanks. I dont anticipate going to 42s yet. Most of my time is spent on
paved roads or packed dirt trails, so mostly on 32s and 35s, maybe
occasionally on 38s. I specked the bike for 42s+fenders to have the
flexibility in the future if the need develops.

I looked briefly on the Gran Cru for another project I was doing but could
not find enough long term reviews about them. The one I found indicated
issues with the seals on that particular unit. However, one review does not
define a product. Have you ever had to change the bearings on them? Much
riding in the rain?

Re: [RBW] 650B Tires

I rode soma Caz tires from oakland, ca up the coast then went the 199 thru
southern central Oregon up to Portland OR /Vancouver WA via 99 with zero flats.
Even stopped by crater lake. All pavement miles, those tires are fast.

Patrick, thank you! Always inspired by your intrepid riding. My compliments!
You are the poster child for Hunqapillar ownership.

Orange Seal could be used for sealing inner tubes and is very effective doing
so. Scroll down this
http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Things_that_Roll/Tires/Sealant_Test_-_Part_1_4147.html
 and this
http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Things_that_Roll/Tires/Sealant_Test_-_Part_2_4155.html
for test results on Orange Seal.
It is latex based so has a tendency to dry out as part of it evaporates so
periodic replacement is advised. Also tends to clog the valve cores so keep a
couple spares with you.

Patrick and other Orange Seal users: I want to try this in my daughters
bike, which will soon be converted to 650b, with tubes and Maxi Fasties. I
assume I will need tubes with removable valves (Presta). I don't think any
of the tubes I have, have those; can you recommend some please? Thanks,
Steve
