[RBW] Re: My Rosco Road Fatty build

2017-03-14 Thread Gabriel Bruguier
Thank you all for the kind words and the welcomes!

Patrick asked about the st and tt: the measurements are 58cm and 57.5cm
respectively. Also, I took a look at the Compass tires. Very tempting.
 One Atala photo below.

EasyRider asked if I had chain drop issues. I have not. I have two other
bikes set up with 1x drivetrains, all with Sugino chainrings, and haven't
had dropping with them, either. The rings aren't ramped or pinned, so I
think that contributes to their chain retention. And I do plenty of curb
jumping and other riding that jostles them quite a bit. I've actually
taken to "jumping" the Riv off curbs when I get the chance, it is a blast
on those Cazaderos!

[RBW] PSA: 56cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-03-14 Thread Christopher Murray
I'd guess that price is pretty fair if the bike is like new as described. I
think it is fair to assume the QB frameset today would be $1300 like the other
imported, lugged frames (and would be Taiwan built vs Japan built). If it was
my size and I was looking for that bike I think I'd go for it. I'd hate to lose
the bike I wanted that's no longer made for $50-100.

Hopefully it works out for you! Post pics if you get it!

Cheers!
Chris

Just placed my order for a Rivet Pearl. Excited to see if it makes it here

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Vs Clem Smith

2017-03-14 Thread Davey Two Shoes
Thanks guys! appreciate the insight. I think I'll go with the Clem. This
chapter of N+1 was sparked while riding my mountain bike on the street and
I thought, wow this would be a nice riding position if it weren't for the
ungainly mountain bike beneath me. Seems like the Clem hits it better. I

Re: [RBW] Is it possible to 'lengthen' cable housing?

2017-03-14 Thread Scott Blouke
I think a lot of people stick with bars they aren't the happiest with
longer than they want because of the cost involved with swapping them out.
 Housing/Cable/Grips/Tape not just the bars.
I just glued grips on a bar and I really want to slip a 8 speed thumb
shifter on replacing a downtube shifter but i don't want to buy new
grips... Ughhh its always something.

You could get new cables because they probably won't be long enough and try
blakclouds ferrule to ferrule temporary fix maybe find a spacer at home
depot/lowes that the ferrules will just fit into and then heat shrink it in
that spot so the junction didn't kink under load...

Re: [RBW] Is it possible to 'lengthen' cable housing?

2017-03-14 Thread Ash A
Foks,

Much appreciate the info.

The LBS said replacing the housing is the only option. Now I know I'm not
the only one with the crazy idea of adding an extra piece of cable hosing.
That said, perhaps the LBS doesn't see a great value in doing the
extension by means of inline adjusters. Because 4 adjusters cost almost
same as new cable set.

Just learned bike part lingo for the 'coupling' in question is 'junction
ferrule'. They are buck or two cheaper than barrel adjusters. I'm going
with barrel adjusters because they are better value than junction ferrules.

I was a hoping for a cheap sturdy piece plastic pipe that you could slide
two pieces of cables housings into.

2017-03-14 Thread Patch T
To answer your question Ian, I had them on a Trek 850, a 26" mtn bike from
1985, converted with Paul Motolites.

Wayne is right, these would be great. The rear hub spacing is 135mm on the
wheelset, so will fit the Atlantis. Beyond that, I can't think of any other
specs you should be concerned with.

[RBW] Re: Decisions, Decisions... Too few? Too many? Just right??

2017-03-14 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks Dave and all who have contributed. I will go find that book! I
have to laugh when I realize how much thinking and information I have to
catch up on. It seems I should get out more... :>)

I do think people walk into a bike shop (maybe), sometimes the biggest they
can find *because* of the perceived choices, and are in the end, totally
confused. Even in a small shop, they know of varieties they have read or
heard about, and so they ask and the sales person goes through at least
some of the buzz types of bikes. And since buying a bike is actually a big
decision for most, the people walk away to think and research. They go
home to do that research, read about the 100's (?), of varieties,
categories, brands, philosophies... then do nothing. They are officially
confused, tired and afraid of making the wrong decision. So they decide to
decide later, or easier yet, decide to not decide at all.

I suppose I am indeed the luddite, or maybe not, but I do admit to hating
seeing people not do something, not have fun, not take a chance, not
live(!), because they are confused or afraid. Time to commit I think, time
to try new things, time to smile a bit more, experiment, be brave.

I will go find that book, and others... I have some catching up to do!

This is indeed an interesting subject that has been covered by many writers. I

Trader Joes is a good example of a store offering *less* choice but selling

2017-03-14 Thread BenG
Interesting, and thanks, Bob. I visited a local bike shop last night for tuning
help with an 11-spd drivetrain for my son in law. Taken aback by an e-mountain
bike display. Discussed e-bikes and progress with a thoughtful senior employee.
He sees that change will occur, trials will sort errors, and the aging
generation will be served. I humbly defer to stronger pedalers, but won't be
happy to get out of the way of an e-bike climbing past me in my 26-34 crawl.

[RBW] Re: Is it possible to 'lengthen' cable housing?

2017-03-14 Thread blakcloud
I have done this same thing when I was experimenting with different bars. I
added a second piece of housing and butted two ferrules together to get the
length I needed. It worked like a charm and even indexed with no problems.
When I had it dialed in I replaced them but I had used it for months before
I did this.

I used this approach because it was all I had on hand at the time. The
inline barrel adjusters mentioned here sounds like a great solution.
