Re: [RBW] Panniers vs Bikepacking bags

I'd be very curious to see front random bag vs rear saddlebag. I think I've
heard in the past that a rando bag acts as a faring and is more
aerodynamic.

After riding the Divide with 4 Panniers, a handlebar bag ( all Ortlieb)
and a Little Joe saddle bag, arriving a few minutes earlier on a 60 m.
day would not be a worthy reason to buy a new set of bags that were much
less convenient for access. For me easy access is a huge plus..Though I
pushed my bike up many hills, the panniers were not a huge impediment. Nor

Re: [RBW] Re: Panniers vs Bikepacking bags

2017-04-28 Thread Robert Keal
DP,

I think the claimed handling benefits for a bikepacking setup generally are
only benefits for those who want to ride aggressively on an off-road tour.
My bikes definitely handle more naturally and with less forethought
required when I'm using a basket/seat bag/frame bag setup, but the point of
bike camping for me isn't really to "shred the gnar" so much as to spend
time in the woods in the company of friends (or myself), so these handling
"benefits" don't matter much to me.

My experience with an intense hike-a-bike was with Ortlieb Sport Packer
Plus panniers mounted to a rear rack. It was about 3-4 hours total, and we
must have lifted our bikes up and over 20 fallen trees all while gaining
and losing elevation at a dizzying pace--in 100 degree heat. The panniers
caused me to have to push from an awkward angle. For the first half hour,
it didn't matter. After two or three, though, the awkward position caused a
lot of strain in several areas of my body. Front panniers may have been
easier in some ways, but they present different issues. Namely, each log of
any size requires one to lift or otherwise support the front wheel and bags
up and over, whereas rear panniers allow one to employ the ol' drag method.
:)

Ultimately, I think a front and rear saddlebag with full frame bag setup
might work best for me for off-road touring (and a rear saddlebag with
front panniers for road tours), but I'm going to give the seat bag at least
one more go before I rule it out.

[RBW] Re: OT: Japanese Woodworking

2017-04-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
My general approach has become far more clear. There is plenty of
information available on Japanese tools, but not much on joinery specifics.
Thus my plan is:

-- use Japanese tools because they are designed for using on the floor
(angles, cutting on the pull rather than push, etc).
-- use standard western joinery that I can find easily as I learn Japanese
joinery as I find it.

This is likely a good thing as just looking as some of those Japanese
joints boggles me poor wee brain. Sardonic grin.

Eric, the place in Maine no longer Japanese joinery.

Takashi -- I'd imagine you grew up with "floor living"? (and likely just
considered it "living).

Garth. Ha! Aye, all cultures floor lived, until their royalty sat in chairs
and other emulated it. Grin.

Mike -- thanks! Fascinating looking book.

[RBW] Re: Panniers vs Bikepacking bags

2017-04-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Maybe the fact that I'm ogrish with monkey arms makes a difference, but
I've not ever had an issue bikepacking with my panniers and LCG. I have had
challenges with a moron with vertigo and a fully loaded bike trying to
balance on steep skree trails traversing at insane grades up insane slopes.
But my panniers were never in the way.

Other arguments I've heard for frame bags: 1) center of gravity and
maneuverability on technical trails. Having bikepacked trails I've also
ridden without a load, this is bunk -- different handling and speeds
required, but still a non-issue; 2) ease of getting through tight brush and
bracken. Nah. If I can fit, either on the bike or off, my panniers can fit.

To me it's just a lot of reason to have gear that is frustrating to use
because it carries so little and is difficult to access. Panniers and
saddle bags and read racks for me. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

You are welcome. I realized that my tires are not 650B, but I couldn't

Re: [RBW] Panniers vs Bikepacking bags

2017-04-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Very interesting; thanks for posting this. I was particularly interested to
see that he found very little difference between front and rear panniers;
IIRC, BQ claimed that fronts dragged less than rears. Am I right, or am I
not remembering correctly? At any rate, this matters to me, because based
on the belief that fronts drag less than rears, I installed my front
lowriders to accommodate my Sports Packers, hoping for lower drag than rear
rack with Rollers. If this is not the case, I will remove the lowriders and
reconfigure the Sports Packers to fit on the rear rack, which has to stay
in place since it holds the rear light and wiring.

Too bad he did not include rear saddlebags or front rando bags. Can anyone
extrapolate usefully to saddlebags or rando bags? Will I be 35.1172% faster
with a Saddlesack Large instead of those Roller Packers?

And: He could probably enjoy the convenience of Ortliebs f and r without
penalty by swapping those Marathons for Compasses.

[RBW] Panniers vs Bikepacking bags

2017-04-28 Thread Bob K.
Thanks for posting this, Will. It's definitely an interesting read. To me, his
testing proves that bikepacking bags don't make all that much sense for a
relaxed tour that will generally be on tarmac and/or relatively well cared for
gravel roads. If the time penalty for front panniers vs. bikepacking bags given
the same amount of effort over the course of 60 miles is just a measly 15
minutes, why not go with panniers? Again, this only really applies for road
touring, though, because panniers (front or rear) are pains in the butt on
off-road hike-a-bikes with lots of elevation change. That said, his test
assumes the same weight for all setups, which generally wouldn't be the case
since most folks, myself included, would take a few more things given the extra
cargo capacity of panniers.

One side note: I've only taken one trip since buying a Porcelain Rocket Mr.
Fusion seat bag--my setup was front low rider panniers, a few small dry bags
(tools, rain gear, etc.) in a front basket, and the PR seat bag--but I would've
rather used a traditional saddlebag like my Carradice Super C, mostly because
it's so much easier to access the contents vs. the PR bag. I'm waiting to make
a final call on this, though, until I take a couple of wholly off-road trips
this summer. I might find that the benefits of the seat bag will outweigh the
small annoyance of packing and unpacking.

Hopefully I didn't digress too much here. Looking forward to hearing others'
thoughts.

[RBW] New charity build

2017-04-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)
Here are some pics of a new build for a fundraiser auction at my daughter's
school. I built a Clementine last year, but thought I'd try a Mixte frame from
New Albion Cycles this year. I had broken the front dropout installing a
headset a couple of years ago (stupidity!), so I bought a chrome replacement
fork from SOMA. Riv content: Extra long reach Tektro sidepulls, and Sneaker
Pedals. The rest of the build is pretty eclectic, and all from the parts bin.
The floral pannier is from Basil, and yes, the bell is matchy-matchy. Gotta
get bidders' attention!

Re: [RBW] FS: 93 stumpjumper frame, cockpit, crank, brakes, carradice.

2017-04-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm only familiar with the high end steel predecessors -- '90 SJ Comp and
'92 SJ Team -- but if this one handles like either of those, it's a
wonderfully neutral handling bike.

Is the tt only 57 cm? Mine were 18.5 or 19 and IIRC they had at least 23"
tts. But if the 18.5 really does have an actual 57 c-c, it will make a
wonderful candidate for a drop bar. I did drop bar my '91, but it took a
severely upjutting T-Bone stem.

The jpgs didn't come through, at least on my computer. I'd like to see,
although I'm not in the market for one.

[RBW] Re: OT: Japanese Woodworking

2017-04-28 Thread Garth
I too have been living this for years now, but I don't associate it with any
country or anything like that. I found I rather like being on the ground rather
than faulted on a chair. I have made do with own makeshift tables which are
just Ikea shelving parts I had leftover and placed on some leftover plastic
storage containers. I was going to get a table top from Ikea, they have one
that is modular so you can just buy the top and raise it any way you wish, or
not at all! But, I just have not been around there since last summer, maybe
this summer I'll drive over. Lowes and Home Depot also sell 36" pine rounds
that you can raise any which way too.

I went for a nice spring walk barefoot today and oh my, how cold can wet field
grass feel in the springtime in the early morning ! Endless blades of grass
massaging the feet and between the toes, so refreshing , woo hoo !

[RBW] Re: OT: Japanese Woodworking

2017-04-28 Thread Mike Packard
I love this list; I am now interested in both Japanese Woodworking and
floor living.

Any good blogs / photo sets about floor living out there?

Mike

[RBW] Re: OT: Japanese Woodworking

2017-04-28 Thread Takashi
Not furniture, but here are videos of traditional-style carpenter:

I think required techniques are similar between carpentry and furniture
craft, only different in sizes.

BTW, I also live on floor. I am typing this sitting on floor, my computer
on a low table.

[RBW] Re: OT: Japanese Woodworking

2017-04-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thank you, gents! Update: I've talked with both Hida Tool (excellent
resource and my choice for tools). They suggested I talk with the guy who
only comes in Saturdays, so I will. and Japanese Wood Worker (now owned by
Wood Craft, so kind of like getting help on timber framing at Home Depot).
Eric, I'll check out woodworking Magazine and the Center for Furniture
Craftsmanship in Maine. I've also made contact with Jay van Arsdale and Hap
Stanley (of shapton.com sharpeners), so we'll see where that goes.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: FS: 2017 MUSA Shorts - Medium

2017-04-28 Thread Broccoli Cog
I know that the list is not really designed to be a classified site so I
won't keep bumping these to the top. Instead I am going to offer them up
one more time at a rock bottom price of $50. The bottom line is that I
purchased them a size too small and I am trying to recoup some of my funds.
These really are great quality made in the USA shorts. If you think these
will work for you this will be a great deal for somebody. If you've been
eyeing these on the Rivendell site and don't want to wait for them to come
back in stock here is your chance. Let me know!
