[RBW] Re: Crust Leather Bar assessments?

2017-06-05 Thread Chris Corral
too wide for me. I'm a skinny 5'10", and found the drops uncomfortable. The
tops are fine, but I like descending in the drops, especially on techy
off-road routes. I'm used to 720+ mountain bike bars, so I dont think it
was the pure width as much as it was the position of my wrists. I also only
rode these on the street for a few blocks, didn't get too wild.

2017-06-05 Thread adam leibow
thanks again for the nice words, everybody. the 50mm big bens fit
comfortably. Will told me he had them on his with fenders, but there is
definitely some finagling involved. I just measured them with the caliper
and it came in at 46mm, slightly narrower than claimed.

I rode the bike to work today. It rides very nice and I have a feeling i'm
going to miss the upright position when I ride my other bikes.

Ha! Yes. Well put, Kai.

My low gear (I have more combos, but really just use high and low) is 32x19
(with a 22t bail out gear I've only used climbing Pikes Peak), and I use
the 32x19 for the long steady climbs. So Roughly miles 1-5, 85-90, 98-102.
That 10 mile climb out of Deckers is interesting -- easy the first three
miles, medium steep the next 5, and "I almost need to stand and pedal"
steep for the last 2. But coming after 80-90 miles are already done, it
feels steeper than it is to a wimp like me.

[RBW] Crust Leather Bar assessments?

2017-06-05 Thread John G.
I popped in to Rivendell HQ a few weeks ago while on vacation. While I was
there, a rangy gent rolled up on 58cm Hunq. It had a stupendously wide bar on
it. After a quick chat with the rangy gent, Will hopped on the Hunq and
disappeared for a few minutes. He came back later with a big smile on his face.
I asked how large the bar was, and was told 66.6.

It looked awesome as hell, and the owner said he loved it. It completely suited
the Hunq.

[RBW] Tires for Cheviot with VO Zeppelin Fenders - Compass or Soma

2017-06-05 Thread SeanMac
Hi all,

I've finally pulled my 60cm grey Cheviot out of the box and started
attaching parts. Hopefully everything will be in place soon and I can take
it out for a ride.

A few days ago I ordered a set of 52mm Zeppelin fenders from Velo Orange.
Now I am ready to order some tires. I was all set to order the Compass
Barlow Pass tires based on all of the positive comments that I have read on
the list. Then, after doing some research, I came across Soma's Supple
Vitesse tire, which seems fairly similar to the Compass tires. The bonus
(perhaps) for me, is that the Soma tire is available in either 38mm to
match the Barlow Pass, or in 42mm - which would be a nice match for my
Zeppelin fenders.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Soma tires and, if so,
would be willing to provide some comparisons between them and the Compass
tires.

Link to Soma tires: Soma Supple Vitesse EX tires

I will be mounting the tires to Mavic A 719 rims. The brakes I am using
are Tektro R 559.

For the most part, the Cheviot will be used as an 'round town bike - a
"grocery getter" as my wife likes to call it. However, I anticipate that
it will be used on local bike paths and (perhaps) for some longer rides /
light touring -- perhaps even on the Erie Canal bike path (stone dust and
dirt, as well as paved areas.

Thanks for your thoughts on which tire will serve me best. I am looking
for something that will be dependable, fun & comfortable to ride, and
relatively unlikely to flat on a regular basis.

Thanks,

Sean

[RBW] Re: New Riv Model - Newsletter

2017-06-05 Thread Ray Varella
I've got a Mtn Mixte from the first batch and my PBH is about 78.
The bike is a great fit so don't think you need to be Roman's size to fit one
well.
I found myself just a tiny bit stretched out with standard Bullmoose bars but
with Albatross and a 9cm stem, the reach is perfect.

I ride it all the time to run errands and cruise the salt marshes.

Given the sizing flexibility, it's a great bike for friends and guests.

[RBW] Re: Sharing a few photos of my Sam with Albatross bars

2017-06-05 Thread Broccoli Cog
Thanks! Yes it is a 62 cm. I had Noodles on the bike before which I really
liked but I just couldn't get to a place where I wasn't experiencing neck
pain even with the bars raised way up.That was enough motivation for me to
try different bars. I also was thinking about the Albastache but after
talking with Will I felt that they would still be a little too aggressive
for my liking. I hear you on the expense part. I ended up buying the bars
from a list member and I tried to save money by attempting to make my
original 8cm stem work. I ended up scrapping that idea after one ride
because the cockpit felt so cramped to me. You may be different so I would
suggest trying your original stem but you will need a shim to reduce the
clamp size down to 25.4. I swapped out for a new 12cm stem and that works
much better for me. I am finding that there are still a few tweaks to be
made. i lowered the angle of bars so they are now more in line with my
wrists and I also lowered the stem much lower than I had with the Noodles.
The combination of those three things have made a difference for me. That
said I have yet to ride anything over 15 miles so I don't have anything to
go on. If your patient I am sure bars, stem or both will come up for sale
soon.

nice, i've gone through more phones than i care to admit due to water. got
tired of putting my phone in a dry bag in my bike bag, and finally got a

it's amazing how expensive it was for what seems like rubber, and some
plastic that seems like high-tech saran-wrap.

replacing them next year. Having a bike between a Sam and a Joe seems to

Hi Dave, the right brake arm will fully open while using the strut to upper

Will the right brake arm open with the strut in the way? Is that why you
have the left rear strut going to crown and right rear strut going to mid
fork?

I have a tubus smarti rack (similar to Tara but designed to be mounted to
brake posts) mounted to the high mid fork braze on . I tilts up on the 650b
bike but should be more level on a 700c model. It has less tire clearance
and probably wouldn't fit a 2" tire though.

[RBW] Re: New Cheviot Day

Adam, do you know the true width of the Big Bens on your set-up, and how
comfortably do they fit? Barely, or do you have any room to spare?
 Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Backwards stem

2017-06-05 Thread 'Stephen Kemp' via RBW Owners Bunch
There a couple of threads at the moment which touch on sensitivity of set
up in terms of comfort/handling/performance of upright vs sportier
cockpits. I have tried a variety of set ups on my bike (not a Riv) from
drops (at saddle height) through Bosco-style (very upright) and Albatross.
Although I've settled on the Albatross set up I don't think there were
major flaws with any of these combos and I've never been able to mess up
the handling to the point of "disconcerting". I guess I've just been lucky
where others seem to have to play around to get just the right bar height,
reach, angle, etc.
