[RBW] Re: Pedaling the upper Mississippi

2017-07-11 Thread Eric Langley
Looks like fun!

How did you arrange the bike accommodations on the Amtrak from Union
Station?

I was under the impression that only the downstate Amtraks from Chicago
allowed you to bring a bike on the train without being boxed up.

Rumor has it Rivendell will not be offering the Sam Hillborne after their
current run of production frames sell out. This is your chance to get a
classic Rivendell frame in "as new condition" with the double top tube. The
new price is $1000.00 shipped.

[RBW] Re: Atlas-like but tubeless

2017-07-11 Thread Jeremy Till
Sounds like you're convinced already, but just to add one more data point:
I'm runnning 40mm tires (wtb nano's) on the 700c cliffhangers currently and
it works great. As others have said, the wide rim spreads out the tires
profile, maximizes its volume, and makes it ride and handle really nice,
IMHO. I constantly feel like the 40mm tires on that bike outperform their
width in terms of traction and smoothness, compared to similarly sized
tires on another bike with more standard width rims (CR-18 and Dyad)

Re: [RBW] Medium Saddlesack w/out rack

2017-07-11 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I'd rode my new medium without a support and found that it would start
rubbing when I hit bumps after a while when loaded. I have a 62cm Appaloosa
prototype and I thought I'd have plenty of room with my saddle height and
big frame. Guess not.

Here's a picture of it loaded where it looks like I should be fine, but it
ended up rubbing anyway after a while:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BV0_t9fhmXu/?taken-by=hunqaloosa

You can use a John's Irish Strap on the lower d-rings and around the saddle
stays to lift it up. Although, it's kind of a bummer to take the extra
step. Not a deal breaker though. Eventually, I think I'll get some sort of
support for mine. Maybe a Mark's rack.

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] Re: (GIF) Don't know how this can be explained

2017-07-11 Thread RJM
Oh yeah, 'bents can be super efficient on flats and downhills, but point
them up and their advantage quickly goes away.

There is this ride that happens in Missouri every year and the wife and I
attend; It's a super flat route that is perfect for a bent. If I were to go
for a course record on that route, I would do it on a 'bent, no doubt.

Fastest I've ever ridden a bicycle on the flats I was drafting right behind
a tandem with a strong team pushing hard. I could not believe the speed
they (and I with their help) were going, but as soon as a hill happened
their speed decreased greatly and I would drop them.

Interesting. I did not realize you could still get a Legolas.

Man, I could totally see getting a Legolas for cyclocross racing if it has
the right geometry for it, and it should since it is a cyclocross bike.

sell my Kona Jake the Snake for that.

[RBW] Re: Atlas-like but tubeless

2017-07-11 Thread Garth
About the only time a rim is too wide is if the rim is wider than the tire
! I recall back in the day riding on Specialized 1.5" tires on Araya 7x
rims which are 32.2mm . Wider rims give better tire profiles than narrow
ones. In pro road racing for example, they run rims that are near the same
width as the tires for the least air turbulence. We're talking like a
23/25mm tire on a 23mm rim or a 25/28mm tire on a 25mm rim. Of course this
doesn't matter for us but offering this as an example of just how close rim
and tire width can be. No longer are the days of running the narrowest rims
you can find to run a tire more than twice it's width.

Hi All,

Long shot but wondering if any one had a 4 bike rack hitch mount for 5/4"
hitch I could borrow for a week 7/14-7/23.

Happy to compensate you in cash, beer, bike parts even.

I live in San Francisco, but happy to pick up in the Bay Area.

Many thanks,

[RBW] Re: WTB Clem Smith Jr H Style 52

2017-07-11 Thread El Sapo
Wow, you got a ridiculously great price, I think I paid $80-90? The 650B's
were rare, I got them straight from Schwalbe USA. The defect was that each
of tires I got had a noticeable bulge at the area where the rubber was
joined. So pronounced that you could see it and feel it when riding.
Schwalbe was very easy to deal with on the return and credit. I'd buy from
them again. I have a bunch of their tires. They told me that the high
performance tires are more susceptible to manufacturing defects like that.

You are right they are great tires. I didn't have them on the bike long
enough to get the pressure really dialed in perfectly. But I took enough
rides to experience how fast they were. I kept remounting them over and
over trying to eliminate the bump. I thought it was the tube or something I
was doing wrong. Schwalbe doesn't make bad tires. But the 2 I got were
defective.

I'm 87 PBH, 5'10" and have a Craigslist-found 61 Homer. The ~2cm standover
(which is what you would have) is less of an issue than I thought it would
be; it's totally unnoticeable during actual riding. The seat is pretty low,
such that even the small Riv Saddlesack rubs the tire and interferes with
brake caliper.

The upside is that it is the nicest riding bike I've ever ridden. So that's
something. :)

You'd almost certainly be able to sell it again at little to no loss, so it
seems pretty risk-free.

[RBW] Medium Saddlesack w/out rack

2017-07-11 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Anyone successfully done this? I'm thinking about it for my 56 cm Sam w/75 cm
saddle height.

That would replace the Carradice Super C I am currently using. I'll do a proper
FS post for that and a couple other items when I have time this weekend.

Jay

[RBW] Re: Delight of rain

2017-07-11 Thread ascpgh
Patrick,

A wonderful take on your ride in the rain and afterward. Its the sort of
content that motivates me to keep fenders on my bike even as summer. A ride
in the summer rain is a real treat, each as different as all those
different words that those native to the higher latitudes have for snow.

[RBW] Re: Atlas-like but tubeless

2017-07-11 Thread drew
Ok leaning toward cliffhangers. They won't be too wide for a 46mm tire, right?
I'm thinking I'll run compass sbh or wtb horizon for most regular riding and
then have the option to put something bigger on for off road trips.

You had a grand adventure but just scratched the surface. I live and ride
around La Crescent which you passed through. It's outstanding countryside
for bicycling. Tim Petersen.
