[RBW] WTB: Shimano FC-6206 triple crankset 170mm, drive train components

2017-09-04 Thread Gabriel Hargrove
Looking for a Shimano triple FC-6206 Crankset 170mm in good condition, as
well as other Shimano Deer head components for a 3x9 speed Riv Atlantis
build. Opinions and ruminations on touring drive trains will also be be
entertained.

Re: [RBW] Re: Knobbie tire fender challenge

Maybe something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mountain-Bike-Clip-On-Fender-Mud-Guard-Set-Front-Rear-29er-27-5-29-650B-/192164719696?hash=item2cbde8ec50:g:O20AAOSwPhdVUQ-o

Possibly drill holes in it and zip tie it to the inside of the rear rack
(no stays) with an odl inner tube between= the the fender and attachment
points?

I’ve yet to find a good answer to the challenge of a rear fender that

 all terrains and all weathers.

I’m not looking for for perfect protection, but to protect against
rooster tail at 20-35mph in the slop.

I use the SKS Mud-X downtube fender for the front. It doesn’t keep my
front dry or drive train and feet clean, but it does keep 99% of the mud
 off my face and glasses.

Until today, I’d been using a Woody fender Chop Chort (with added stays
for rigidity) on the rear. The stay died to a twig as I LCG’d. The ride
home was much quieter — the sound I’d been puzzling over for the past
 month
gone despite all hardware being tight. Being shorter than a full rear
fender it only marginally works better against rooster tail, so minimal
benefit vs the toursacks on the rear rack being a partial fender.
 https://www.woodysfenders.com/category-s/116.htm

So, my plan is to use the toursacks as my fender and call that as good
as I’ll get unless something you all know of fits the bill. Ideas?

 With abandon,
 Patrick

Correctomundo, Bill. I "sized up" to a 52cm Clem L for the long (virtual)

towniefying old mountain bikes with "NORBA geometry": really long toptubes
connected to short headtubes.

Bosco's do reach WAY up but they also reach WAY back. If a bike is already
small for you might have your knees bumping your hands with Boscos. Since
you are just experimenting, have fun with it. Generally, when I look for a
Bosco bike, I look to start with a bike that would be too big for me with
any other bar.

Haibike makes hi-step and low-step versions of their ebikes, which correlate

"It is kinda funny though how one day they recommend this, then another day
they recommend that, and every day is different !  Thank goodness there is only
one this and one that and one day , it keeps things looking "normal" !  "

I think that the big thing that's changed is the quality and suppleness of tire
casings. In the 90s when all mtb rims were skinny, tires were all relatively
stiff and meant to be run at higher pressures (at least all the ones i could
afford, anyway). And, to a lesser extent, the rise of tubeless technology. To
take full advantage of newer / better tires, it is necessary to use lower
pressures which, in turn, requires an adequately wide rim.

Thats my experience anyway. I also think that this is an area where
riders/enthusiasts and a handful of progressive manufacturers
(compass/panaracer, schwalbe, surly/inova, etc.) are WAY ahead of the rim
manufacturers in figuring this out and in driving the market and technology.
I'd trust real-world annecdotal evidence way more than a corporate endineer's
chart.

Canfield crampons in Silver. After getting them I discovered I really like
having a very thin pedal with desert moccasins (from Crazycrow), which I
have glued on a thin layer of rubberish sole material to protect the soles
from the pins. I am back to clipless on all my bikes, but if the smoke ever
clears here in Bend, it will be my setup for bike camping. I am stuck
inside as the smoke is officially hazardous. Cough...cough.

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day--R05C0 8U883 Medium Mountain Mixte

2017-09-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
Mark explained he was not referring to the name Medium Mountain Mixte that I
used in the subject line of this thread, but was referring to Rivendell's
referential use of the term Mixte when describing a non-Mixte design

I think I understand better now. Thanks. Why would somebody who knows better
deliberately use the wrong term to describe something? Is it marketing? Is it
sloppiness? Did they forget?

If I had to guess I would say it was just convenient communication. Last month
the path of the moon was just right that observers on earth could see it block
out the sun. Almost everybody referred to that event as an eclipse, even though
everyone who knows better knew full well that it was not an eclipse but an
occultation. When you said "the eclipse" people knew what you were talking
about, and little harm was done by using the incorrect term.

These eclipse/occultation/Mixte minutiae are fresh in my mind because last
month Grant used the term 'eclipse' in a post and I called him on it, just for
fun. When I went to pick up my frame, Grant called me on using the name Medium
Mountain Mixte, also just for fun. That's the irony, that we're speculating why
Grant would use the wrong term when it was Grant correcting me for using the
wrong term.

Part of language is just trying to convey an idea efficiently. The speaker is
guessing at what words to use to get the job done. I've used the term
'step-through' for decades working at bike shops and usually when speaking and
with the bike present I still use the term step-through along with a little
pantomime motion towards the dropped top tube.

If Rivendell sometimes used the term Mixte to describe a non Mixte design, I
trust it was just to briefly point out that the thing had that step through
feature. A Facebook post, a BLUG post is an environment where writers might
get a little loose with descriptive terms. When it comes to actual NAMING of
objects, like frame decals or a product brochure I think it's right to expect
more precision.

I've got a Dahon MuXL. More cushy on Big Apples than my Wilbury on GB Hetres.
Steering feels twitchy for the first 100-200m then my muscle-memory adapts.

Just a wee bit slower than the Wilbury on my standard 15km commute.

Lack of hand positions is my only gripe. I run wrapped albatross on my Riv, so
I have 3.6 distinct hand holds. Dahon, basically 1.

Love the Nexus-8 on the MuXL too.

Feel envy every time a Brompton rider does the rear-wheel tuck 'n park trick.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-09-04 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Ann,
As you've probably noticed by now, sea mist (super fine salt water
particles created by wave and wind action) on the bike causes other
particulates (dust, grit, pollen) to stick. A rinse of fresh water every
few days and a (soapy) wipe down of the bike every week or so will keep
things from getting out of hand. "Waxing" the frame with a decent
protective product (quick and easy tends to get done more often than a
labor intensive product like paste) every month or so.

Another thought on a paint-protective-coating is that the bright sun and
reflected sunlight will age the paint faster than you might imagine.

Nickel plated chains and cassettes hold up pretty well with a regular wash.
However, remember that same salt air causes gunk to build up in the cable
housing. A few drops of teflon based dry lube into the housing (with the
bike hanging by the front or rear wheel) will prolong useable life.

FWIW, a few years ago a lab tested chain lubes with the lowest friction
(not longest viability). The four at the top were Molten Speed Wax, Squirt
(wax based), Parrafin (grocery store) and Lilly Lube (synthetic blend).

Have you talked with the local bike shops? There are plenty of hardcore
roadies and triathletes to support some quality bike shops around there.
Maybe they would share advice for the conditions.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA
