[RBW] Re: I like MTBubbe, but this build's not quite there yet.

2017-09-07 Thread Paul Clifton
Thanks y'all.

Bill, how does yours climb? I suspect it feels a lot different with the
saddle much higher and drops. But that puts you even farther back over the
back wheel, so I'm curious whether yours encourages taking it easy uphills
also.

Patrick, I have a feeling the climbing has a good bit to do with the handle
bar position. It's my fault, not the bike's. I just can't comfortably get
up over the front wheel with the bars so high, and I can't get 'em lower
with the stem I have. I'll update when I swap stems and/or bars. I do enjoy
honking on occasion. Good link too. Imagine a stick figure with hands at
chest height and butt just in front of the seat. Kind of like a stairmaster
position. That's how it feels right now.

But it does climb easily. Like Ron mentioned, I've got a lot of gears,
which makes it about as easy to ride up a hill as I could want.

I don't think that it's a theoretically perfect set of gears, but it's nice
to be able to stay on one ring and pretty much always find a gear that
works. I'd try a 1x setup, but I've got a triple crank and three rings, so
I doubt I'll mess with it for a while. It's a 28/38/48 front and an 11-34 9
speed in back, for what it's worth.

I'm pretty sure I could load this bike up pretty thoroughly, Davey. But I
haven't had the occasion to carry much of a load in a while. I've gotten
groceries on my Trek 720 a few times, but these days it's nice to have a
few bikes with just enough luggage for an all day outing. I have an old
trunk sack I might put on this bike if I find the right rack, but I may try
a frame bag of some sort. When I had an LHT, I always felt the need to set
the bike up like I'd ride around the world. I don't feel like I want to try
to do that anymore, and I don't have that bike anymore. I definitely need
to add bottle cages and lights ASAP, because I do feel like riding this
bike all day and getting back after dark.

Rich, there are some fun roads in SW Atlanta (some unfun ones too). And the
westside beltline is worth the ride itself. I'll definitely show you around.

Deacon Patrick, looking at your photos (really nice blog BTW), it looks
like our bars are at about the same height. But yours are a good bit
farther forward. Does the albastache swoop as far back as the albatross?
Maybe I'll make it by the co-op in the next couple days and dig for a
longish no-rise stem.

I'm mostly just wondering where to ride next...

Re: [RBW] Re: New Clem L

2017-09-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Update: I replaced the stock Kenda Kwick tires (good, solid commuter
workhorses, but they're notorious in all wheel sizes for a dead ride) with
Fatty Rumpkin Force Fields. What a revelation! Even though they're narrower
than the Kwicks, they still deliver a plusher ride while inexplicably also
feeling more nimble. And lighter! They definitely feel better with the motor,
but I made sure to pedal unassisted, too, so I could compare to when I've
ridden the Kendas the same way.

If you own a Clem or any other Riv with Kenda Kwicks, I strongly recommend
better tires for your fine bicycle. The difference is noticeable and wonderful.

[RBW] Re: Paul Racer front brakes with fenders

2017-09-07 Thread A CT Cyclist
I have used Duramas in the past but the clearances are tight hence the
desire to try the Sheldon Fender nut.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words .

This is the back of the brake with the recessed *bolt *that threads
directly into it, no nuts involved.

This photo shows a recessed area that the head of a bolt could sit in. The
head must sit absolutely flush because any protrusion would interfere with
the brakes operation. If you look at the first picture you can see that
there is no room for a nut that isn't absolutely flush. You will also note
that the bolt is threaded about half way then the bolt becomes a bit wider
so you cannot thread it any further into the brake as demonstrated in the
picture below.

Even if you could thread the bolt all the way through you can see in the
photo below that the nut sits proud and would interfere with the brakes
operation.

Finally, I demonstrate the way the fender nut is supposed to work with the
brake bolt coming from the front of the fork, allowing a M6 bolt to be
threaded into it for fender mounting.

The only solution I can see is to use something like the extra long bolt
kit for converting the Racer brake to a non-recessed brake. At
$14 plus shipping from CA to CT I think it would be cheaper to go the local
hardware store.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Technomic Standard or Tallux Stem. 25.4mm clamp - 12cm or 13cm

2017-09-07 Thread David Banzer
Looking for a Nitto stem.
Specifically the 225mm quill height versions.
Either the Technomic Standard or Tallux (what Riv sells) will work.
Need 25.4mm clamp.
Either 12cm or 13cm reach.

I can pay outright, or have a few stems to trade, all are 225 tall:
Nitto Technomic Standard - 10cm, 26.0mm (have 2)
Nitto Technomic Standard - 11cm, 25.4mm
Also can trade for more than your share in Willow chainrings

Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Cheviotlantis

2017-09-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Erl and Kai,

I have added some quick and truly not very good pictures to the Flickr
album:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/21182339@N05/albums/72157679795615453

Let me know if that does not show something needed. The brake cable run
from the cable stop nearest the head tube is not perfectly straight but it
does bypass the lower stop, going directly from the top stop through the
pump peg to the brake cabling. The cockpit cabling is a little ugly (i.e.
longer than needed) these days as I switched from Albatross bars to
MAP/Ahearne's (which are perfect for me and this bike) as well as changing
from stem mounted shifters to bar mounted Paul Thumbie / Silver shifters
(another great change) and never re-did the cabling.

I will add that I think the cable stop locations changed a bit over
iterations of the Cheviot. I am thinking the routing for center pulls got
even harder on my version so it may be easier on earlier editions.

As to still using the pump peg, I think the answer is a qualified yes.
That said, I would want something that fit really well (not something too
big crammed in). Also, the cable stop braze-ons, especially the top one,
are such that the right pump would, I think, be needed. I do not use a
frame pump on this bike, choosing to carry something smaller in the
saddlebag. I like frame pumps(!) but I just don't have anything that works
well on this bike.

One thing this did remind me of is to maybe apply some "helicopter" tape to
the head tube. Cable rub there is always a problem, at least with any
bar-end or bar-based shifters.

Let me know if any of this does not make sense or needs more pics or
whatever.

I might take better pictures outside today or several bike things, then
delete these, so let me know and it shall be pictured if possible.

Thanks,

Bob

P.S. Just as a teaser, just because... I will be posting pictures of the
best project bike I have ever put together (a 650B conversion). I am no

[RBW] Re: Paul Racer front brakes with fenders

2017-09-07 Thread ascpgh

I have those brakes and fenders on my Rambouillet. The trick of that image
is that it is the rear of the caliper set. Here's the pubic side of the
front and rear when installed:

I chose to use a daruma bolt
http://www.santucci-cycles.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/VO-Fork-Daruma.jpg
on the fork to bring the front edge of the fender forward as much as
possible. It hangs on the brake mounting bolt.

On the rear I have used the Problem Solvers Sheldon Nut to mount the fender
support bracket:

What's not obvious to the imagination without a picture is the extension
from the recessed nut seat that is required to have the secondary threads
and bolt for the fender support bracket in line and on top of the hex
socket to tighten the recessed nut on the brake bolt.

[RBW] I like MTBubbe, but this build's not quite there yet.

2017-09-07 Thread Paul Clifton
I finished building my MMM/Rosco Bubbe L/MTBubbe late Saturday night and
have gotten in a few shortish rides (3 to 10 miles or so).

The bike is indeed lots of fun, as I expected. It's the kind of bike that
I'd take if I'm just heading out the door for whatever. It's wonderful and
really close to what I imagined, only better/smoother/lighter and more
relaxed.

As it's built though, it's not quite ready for single track. I think
swapping the stem, and probably the bars, will get it in the sweet spot of
a fun bike that goes where I point it, but still responds to a kick.

My shakedown ride, Sunday morning, was to my dad's house:

I got a flat on the way because I tried to use tubes for 26x1.5 or so. They
both blew up. So he picked me up in the truck, and we went to the bike shop.

The build is based around what I had on hand:

   - Crank - Shimano XT M730 (from my brother in law)
   - RD - Deore (from the list)
   - FD - Sachs New Success (from my friend who didn't use it any more)
   - Bars/Stem - Albatross/Kalloy (from list)
   - Pedals - VP-Vice (from that time they were irresistibly inexpensive)
   - Shifters - Shimano 8 speed bar ends (from the list)
   - V-Brakes/Levers - Avid Single Digit 7 and Speed Dial (new from the
last place that had them in stock)
   - Wheels - Atlas/Deore/SP (new from riv)
   - Tires - Panaracer Gravel King 650x1.9" (48mm) (new)
   - Seat/Post - Rivet Imogene (new) / Nitto 65 (list)
   - BB - UN55 (new)
   - Cassette - Shimano 9 speed (new)
   - Headset - FSA (installed by riv)

First off, it's a good thing I like friction shifting, because I really
can't seem to match components for some reason. Even so, the shifting is
the smoothest of any bike I own, the smoothest I've ever used (including
Silvers with Shimano 600). The New Success derailer is a pain to set up,
but it shifts really well, so I'll keep it on until I come across something
else.

The main thing though, is I can't get the bars any lower or farther away,
and even in the forward hooks, I can't get up over the front wheel and dig
in. I'm keeping an eye out for a 100 mm or so stem with no rise to try out.
If that doesn't quite do it, I'll try another bar that doesn't come back as
far or at as much of an angle (like the Jones bar, if I come across one).
I'd try my original mustache bar, but that would take different brake
levers. Maybe I'll flip the Albas ... maybe not.

These fancy v-brakes are the best brakes I've ever used. The speed dial
thing on the levers makes it easy to adjust the modulation, so my front
brake squealed once, the first time I wanted to go slow down a hill, and
hasn't made a peep since. They have plenty of modulation but will lock up
both wheels immediately if I need them to.

On my second ride, on Labor Day, I rode along a section of the Atlanta
Beltline that's still under construction:

It's old rail bed that they've graded, but haven't paved yet, so gravel and
dirt. I met up with the paved section and rode up to Westview Cemetery. I
like to take new bikes here because there are lots of fun short hills to go
up and down, and lots of things to think about:

>From there I rode along MLK and through Florida Heights to the PATH that
runs through Lionel Hampton Park, which is basically just a big chunk of
forest, with 2 paved paths, 1 unpaved path, a creek, and a giant
high-tension power line cut through the middle of it:

Some deer wandered out right after I took this picture, but they were too
far away to snap. Lionel Hampton park, as mentioned, has a creek running
through it, so all roads leading in are fun, steep, long downhills (of
course leaving is the opposite). In the park, there's a little mixed
single/double track along the creek.

This is as rough as it gets, but there are a couple short climbs:

There were a couple big rocks. I

[RBW] Re: Cheviotlantis

2017-09-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I bought my Cheviot when in Denver and my greatly skilled bike person at
Queen City Cycles, Ethan, had the steady hand to drill a small hole in the
rear pump peg. This allowed a straight through cable routing for the rear
Paul centerpull. He also suggested the reverse/underside mounting of the
rear brake and it has all worked perfectly. I still stand in a little awe
when I look at the set-up...

I know there are other ways as well. Bottom line is it can be done and can
work really well! That said, another approach is to use a Paul on the
front and stay with the Tektro sidepull in the rear, avoiding the problem
with the routing around the pump peg.

[RBW] Howdy from central Wisconsin!

2017-09-07 Thread Pondero
When Instagram buddies re-meet on the Riv forum...delightful.

One of the most important rules of this group is that you must post pictures of
your new Hunq when received. If you thoroughly document the box opening and
build, you get extra credit. Welcome, buddy, and enjoy the new ride!

Hi! I too follow your Instagram account. In fact we had interacted recently
about how awesome Sackville bags are. Welcome to the group. I think you
will find that there are a great group of very friendly and helpful folks
here. I am very much interested in seeing your Hunqapillar build as it
comes together. I am pretty certain this will be my next bike.

Howdy, Stephen!

Nice to see you're joining the bunch! I, too, have enjoyed your Instagram
postings. Really looking forward to seeing your Hunqapillar and reading
about your adventures together; whether it's long walks on the beach or in
some far off locale!

[RBW] Paul Racer front brakes with fenders

2017-09-07 Thread EasyRider
I don't see why not? Sheldon fender nuts are designed to replace the recessed
nut on caliper brakes that use that style. Paul Racers also come in a non
recessed version, if that helps.

[RBW] Paul Racer front brakes with fenders

2017-09-07 Thread EasyRider
Paul Racers are available in a non-recessed version (nutted) and that is
probably what you want if you need to used a Sheldon fender nut. There are
pictures of the non-recessed brake on the Paul site.
