Re: [RBW] Re: Custom bike

2017-09-11 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I definitely had fun with the Rasta Paul skewers, but the other key
features are credited to Mark Abele who worked with Mark Nobilette to not
only implement the ideas but make it a work of art.

Check out the front fender which Mark kept in place under the rack to
maintain a beautiful curve.

The dynamo wiring is meticulously organized and the rear wiring is not
shown in the blug but has beautiful wire guides that are tastefully hidden
from view when looking from the rear.

Look at the rear cable stop in the last blug pic--wow that sure beats a
cable hanger any day :)!

Mark had the idea to put some extra braze-ons for the pump. I was a little
skeptical because my frames tend to be a tight fit, but the pump fits
beautifully. I should have had a flask holder too ;)!

The paint is so beautiful I had to get a kickstand to protect it! I am
definitely loving every minute with the bike!

Hi Jim,

If your friend uses a zero setback seatpost, he might gain an extra cm or
so. I needed to do that when I needed to decrease seat height for my kid.
Of course the seat may be pushed forward a little more, which could cause a
different issue.

Use a straight seat post with separate clamp. Rotate the clamp so that the

[RBW] Seatpost Question

Hi all,

I have a question about seatposts that I was hoping someone might be able
to help me with.

I have a friend with short legs and a long torso. I suggested to him that
he buy a larger frame to accommodate his long torso. But it turns out his
legs are unusually, remarkably short, such that, even with the seat post
slammed, he wants things a cm or so lower.

The saddle is a Brooks B17 - I know he could get a less-high saddle.

But it's a great saddle. Does anyone know of a seatpost, preferably with
setback, with a lower than normal profile? I think he has a Velo Orange
Grand Cru in there right now. Nice seatpost. But lots of this seatpost
can't fit into the seat tube.

Thanks in advance of any expertise.

[RBW] Re: OLD FS Posts

2017-09-11 Thread Hugh Smitham
I generally update a post with what has sold and what is available as well
as any price drops. The last big purge I did once everything sold I deleted
the post so I wouldn't receive inquiries and to unclog the list.

It's a good practice.

2017-09-11 Thread Ryan Fleming
Hi Tim...you make a good point about not shoving the saddle back and my
other Rivs are not in the least twitchy but this one with Chocos , to my
mind, is and this is after Mark tweaked it by swapping in a longer stem (12
or 13cm) and cutting off 14mm off the choc. bars. Riv graciously gave me
my choice of what I wanted to do. so I went with that option. One way or
the other, I'm still a few millimeters from Nirvana but I'm also thinking
that the configuration is just not what I'm personally used to. I haven't
ridden an upright bike since I was 13 or 14. Totally fixable , though, I am
sure

BTW not using this forum to criticize Rivendell who could not have been
more accommodating and who built me a gorgeous bike.

[RBW] Re: OLD FS Posts

2017-09-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
I imagine our email-only users have it even worse. Typically our email
users make a FS post, and then when the item sells, they don't reply to
their own post. Typically they just email a new post that says "Item X is
sold, thanks" in the subject line which starts a new, separate thread for
all the rest of us who view the list as a webpage. I imagine those folks
get a lot of emails saying "is Item X still available?" because there's no
way to know that it's sold when you search the history.

[RBW] Re: FS Brand New Lugged S84 Seatpost

2017-09-11 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Maybe this is a dumb suggestion, but couldn't one simulate cutting off the
Choco bars by gripping them a bit further forward from the ends. I say this
because I'm guessing that the "twitchiness" you both describe (a description
I've never heard about any Riv) maybe is due to the increased leverage from
gripping the very swept back Choco bars at the end (the natural place one would
grab, of course.) It seems the swept back bars are, in essence, a lever, and
the further away from the axis of rotation, the easier (twitchier?) it is to
turn the wheels. If you notice less response when you move your hands in, then
shorten the bars. I'm thinking that by moving the seat back, more weight goes
to the rear wheel, thus the twitchiness could get worse. Full disclosure: I am
about as far from an engineer or bike designer as I could be. In other words,
my opinion and 4 bucks will get you a latte, and nothing else.

I like when the old FS posts are left up (with a final SOLD post), for two
reasons. Three reasons.
1. It helps people price their own hard-to-price for sale items.
2. Seeing the "This message has been deleted" on a grayed-out post
distresses me. It usually means someone was WAY out of hand, but sometimes
people seem to just delete their posts for no reason. Bugs my OCD.
3. Many FS posts spin out into very interesting comparisons and deep

I couldn't begin to imagine how it worked, so I looked up this video, if

It's hard to imagine that the wheel/brakes are just attached to the fork by
those 12 bars of bent carbon fiber. Amazing!

[RBW] Re: Favorite Platform Pedals

2017-09-11 Thread ChrisB
Hi All, I have wide feet and prefer a thin, flat sole in my shoes. The RMX
pedal that Riv sells is good but the best I've found is the Hope F20 Flat
Pedal. It's well made (the bearings seem fantastic), thin and light for
such a large pedal (100mm wide and 110mm front to rear). It has a very
shallow curve (almost flat), no right angles to dig into soles, and the
machined ridges work well in wet weather without pins (never put them in
through many wet commutes). Overhaul kits are available and, to my eye, in
the silver-anodised color, they look as good as any pedal out there. Like
most good things, though, they aren't cheap. Regards, Chris

FYI, tires aren't that great. Lots of tread (really, I didn't ride this

[RBW] Re: 200 miles on 10 bikes, an essentially pointless self-challenge

2017-09-11 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wow. If I were trying to conjure the most UnRiv fork
 imaginable, I wouldn't even get here! I
admire your quest to find the do-it-all disc fork. Also envious of your
sabbatical and your 10/200 challenge. It should put you in good stead for
the Marin Mountains 200. (I thought a while back you claimed to be more of
a mechanic than a rider?! Perhaps I mis-remember.)

I will say that I recently did a ride with similar challenges, the D2R2
.

For various reasons, I elected to do the 115k, not the full monty180k.
However, the shorter version still featured almost 8,000 feet of climbing,
and 90% on dirt roads, about 7% singletrack.

After considering doing it on my Trekendell (poor man's Atlantis?)
I tackled it on my 1970s mongrel
Takara, which I suppose could be considered a poor man's AHH (same tire
clearances, OLD [after spreading a la Sheldon's 2x4 method], chainstay
length, relaxed geo). Actual Riv content includes Baggins bag, Newbaum's,
water bottles (not shown). Of course I did have my magic Merrell sandals. I
can say for me, this bike and its 70s-era technology was more that
enough--comfortable, great handling on the sometimes hairy decents, as fast
as I could wish.

Best with your 200 challenge and your 200 brevet.

Thanks for all the great pictures, John. I'm really glad to have met you
and everyone on the ride--what a nice group.

I wasn't able to get past the first 8 miles of "hills," so I turned back
about 8 miles in. That's 8 miles of uphill, only steep in one area--the
last--, but never ending slight incline the first 7.5 miles. I ride in
flat, flat Philadelphia and am not used to inclines. Deacon Patrick, I tip

Still lots of fun and good conversation. The ride and the day was great
for us up "north." I hope no one in the south was hit too hard with Irma.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pleased by longish life from tires and chain; chain life under the pure paraffin regimen

2017-09-11 Thread Ron Mc
Patrick has it. Since I've switched to Wippermann stainless chains and
molten speed wax, I won't be doing anything else, with exception of using
Clean Ride bottle lube to extend me to the next clean/wax cycle. The
$18/lb for Molten Speed Wax sounds expensive, but if your chains are clean
(ultrasonic) going into the wax bath, a half-pound is good for waxing 8 (or
more) chains - so I've estimated the pound will get me over 15,000 mi -
almost 3 years.

The quick answer is to figure where your saddle would sit on a 54cm seatpost,
then determine if you can reach the bars you like with that virtual toptube
measurement. I have a 79ish PBH and ride a 52cm Clem L with the same reach with
chopped Boscos.
