[RBW] Re: Hubbubhubbuh tandem report

2017-10-02 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Gorgeous Hubba build, smartly appointed. Great rider photo on the Santana!
Aside from the Riv-like ride, the wide fit ranges are another big plus with
the Hubbubhubbuhs. What size is yours?

My son and I also ride a Santana--a 26" that I Rivved up with the fattest
tires possible (2.1", inhibited from larger by the vestigial tail some
unicrown forks have) and some Boscos in back, Albas in front, and the
lovely blue back o bike bags. We've been moving the crank extenders down
but the seat is still slammed. I suspect he would fit fine on a Riv. (He'll
be 8 next month but is tall for his age.) My brother recently moved to
Great Barrington. Maybe we can do a tandem ride one day. Would love to know
some good roads out that way.

Re: [RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-02 Thread Patrick Moore
We need a sliding scale. Me:

Assembly: 10/10 Felix
Choice of components: 10/10 Felix
Adjustment of body-supporting parts: 10/10 Felix
Modifications: 9/10 Felix
Gearing selection: 10/10 Felix
Drivetrain upkeep: 9/10 Felix
Other moving parts, upkeep: 8/10 Felix
Dirt on the frame and shiny bits: 7/10 Oscar

And it depends on the bike. I keep my Riv Roads cleaner than my (dirt road)
Matthews and certainly than the Hon Solo, which still has mud on the
underside from a months-ago ride in our flooded bosque (as I noticed when I
turned it upside down this morning to wire the tail light).

Chris,
You're welcome Sir. I think 2.6 would fit...might have to let some air out
to get 'em through the brakes but pretty sure they'd work.

Thanks for posting the clearance pics! I've been following some of the
online chatter on dedicated MTB's and many people think the industry is
going to settle on 27.5 x 2.6 tires rather than full 3" tires. It looks

Here's a better pic of the crown and an attempt to show the brake

wood to clear the cables.

2017-10-02 Thread MountNormal
Keith,
The pic of the crown is misleading, I think there would be room for fenders.
The brace between the seat stays is pretty close though, and with a 2.4 tire,
the brake cables would be an issue. My plan is to get wooden fenders and I'll
be able to "shape" them to fithopefully.

[RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-02 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am a Felix converting towards an Oscar. Dirt bike drivetrains stay clean and
lubed and big chunks of dirt/mud are removed from the frame, racks, wheels.
Road bikes are kept much cleaner, but not immaculate like in days past. After a
wet ride, I spend 15 minutes wiping and lubing, 10 minutes or less if I chose a
fendered bike. The Rivendells
get more attention, the Surlys and Jones get much less.
