Re: [RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-25 Thread Jay Connolly
Joe, it seems to me that when I followed the standard instructions, my
experience was much like yours. Then I wanted to take them off, which I
managed by opening a gap between the grip and bar with an 18" zip tie and
squirting in some soap and water, then working the grip. It took a while. I
used the soap and water again to reinstall them. There can be some play
until the soap evaporates, but it was much easier. I'm a chronic tinkerer,
but the Jones grips make me think very carefully about what I want before
making the commitment of installation.

Re: [RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-25 Thread Bill Lindsay
The pro way to install grips is with compressed air. Your basic $50
compressor comes with a narrow blower nozzle. With that inside the grip you
pull the trigger of your compressor nozzle and the grip slides on literally
on a cushion of air. Before I could afford the $40 to buy a small
compressor, I'd always go back to my old bike shop to blow grips on.
Tubeless setup is also far more likely to work if you have a compressor
with that blower nozzle.

The worst, impossible to install 'grips' back in the day were Grab-Ons:

Those things were impossible.

I am lucky to live in a part of the world where I see a lot of Rivendells.
I have seen this small Glorius Mixte a dozen or so times at my local

talked to you and your son or Nephew once. Anyways the other day I saw the

and wish I had my green Cheviot to line up with them.

[RBW] FS - 2016 Sam Hillborne 58cm orange frame

2017-10-25 Thread Bruce K Jamison
For sale Sam Hillborne 58cm orange frame that I bought in June 2016. $750
plus shipping from Houston (The bike didn't get flooded! My neighborhood
was fine). Bike Flights is usually the cheapest option.

I treated it with frame saver and built it up a couple of ways, but it's
too close to my other bikes so off it goes. There's a paint ding on the
non drive side "R", otherwise it's pretty clean. It came with a seat post
(not pictured) so I'll add that if you want.

[RBW] What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-25 Thread Bill Lindsay

I was at Riv HQ yesterday and had a longish chat with several of the
staff. Will, Corey, Roman, Mark, and I waved hi to Vince. They had been
paying attention to my 10x200 thing, and we talked a little bit about that,
and we also talked about the Marin Mountains 200k that had been a big part
of the focus of my training. That ride was scheduled for Oct 14, but got
moved to the 28th because of the fires, so it's just a few days away.
I was telling Will about the bike I'm going to be using, with it's carbon
fiber shock fork and disc brakes. Here's a link to the photo for those who
didn't see it before:

NINER

I made the comment to Will that it's probably my least Rivvish bike,
meaning that it's aluminum, with a carbon shock fork, with disc brakes,
etc. It's 'modern'. It's 'contemporary', etc. Will disagreed. Will said
he thinks it is totally Rivvish, because I've considered every part on the
bike, and decided on what will work for me, with zero consideration about
what others expect me to run. This fork works for me, so I'm running it.
I want shifters on the steertube, so I made a shifter mount. I think
hydraulic discs are the best, so I'm running them. I think brifters are
lame, so I'm not running them. I want 650B wheels on a Niner, so there. I
want a dynamo hub, even though I'm running 15mm through axle. I
commissioned a custom lamp mount. Etc etc. The upshot is that "being
Rivvish" does not mean blindly following Riv's style. It means freeing
yourself from style-following.

Since Will is young, pale and bald, I thought we should paraphrase spoon-boy

Do not try and bend the *style*, that's impossible. Instead, only try to
realize the truth...*there is no style*. Then you'll see that it is not the
*style* that bends, it is only yourself.

2017-10-25 Thread lconley
They are the standard 23.8 mm OD in the grip area, so yes they should be
able bar ends. The problem is usually with upright bars with smaller OD
(22.2 mm) in the grip area which requires thinner wall tubing in order to
use bar end shifters.

[RBW] Re: Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-25 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Melanie, I found with swept bars, it's best to rotate the trigger shift
lever up, so the throw is about 45 degrees downward. (If looking at the end
of the bar, rotate the shifter clockwise so the paddle is higher. It's
easier to shift this way for me, and I have carpal tunnel and I am ulnar
positive (birth defect where my ulna is longer than the radius, which gives
me hand issues). Give it a try.

[RBW] Continental Sport Contact II 650b x 42 vs. GB/Compass 650b x 42 by riders of them both please.

2017-10-25 Thread RandoNate
Well, I haven't compared the 650 sizes, but I do have lots of riding time with
the 700 versions (sport contact ii 700x42 and compass 700x44 extra light). I
did a 1500 mile road tour on my sam with the sport contacts and commute daily
(also on my sam) with the compass. I've found the compass to be much more of a
pleasure to ride, though much more susceptible to flats. The compass makes the
rough roads of Oakland feel like butter, while the sport contacts feel
noticeably stiffer. Both feel about the same in terms of speed, though the
handling seems lighter with the compass. I get a flat maybe once every month
and a half on the compass, whereas I did not get even one flat on my tour with
the sport contacts. Hope that helps!

[RBW] X post 650b. FS: Stan's Grail 650 Prototype

2017-10-25 Thread Hunter Ellis
Hi All. Sorry for the cross post from 650b (and iBob in passing...)

I have a pair of brand new Stan's ZTR Grail rims in 650b 32h...yes they
really are 650b, and no you can't find info on that :-) They were made
special for Bruce Gordon and I got them a couple months ago for an upcoming
build (have decided against using them...for now). They're ridiculously
light and take 38's - 42's no problem (I wanted a little wider so I got
some wider rims)

$110 shipped to list members. Pics on request or Craigstlist ad
here

2017-10-25 Thread Karl
I’m having trouble not justifying a plane trip from the east coast to pick it
up. It’s an incredible deal

[RBW] Re: Another orange bike - Holey Hillborne Build

2017-10-25 Thread lconley
I am sure about the weight. I have a Park DS-1 bike scale. I weighed it
when I took the photos. I coated the inside of the frame. The wide B-68 is
heavier than a B-17, The stem is steel. The 105 rear derailleur has steel
parts. The Noodles are the widest width I could get. It has 44 mm wide
tires. I am 6' tall, long torso, short legs, and fat. I could lose the
weight of several complete bicycles and still be overweight, so I don't
really build bikes to be light. Durable and comfortable is important to me.
Due to the proportions of my body, I love bikes with relatively long top
tubes and high handlebars, probably one if the reasons I like Rivendells so
much. I have tried all sorts of handlebars but still prefer drops - I have
been riding them since my 1970 Schwinn Varsity Sport and feel funny sitting
too upright.
