[RBW] Re: Roasting Robusta

2018-02-25 Thread Ray Varella
Leslie,
Green beans keep at least 4-6 months like Patrick says.
They will gradually lose some of their fruity and spicy undertones and nuances
over time and you will be left with really smooth and delicious coffee.
Some island grown beans are actually aged for a couple years before they are
sold.

and when you have a few different varieties left and not enough of any of
them to make a full batch, mix them and roast them.
As long as you start with good coffee the results will be outstanding.
A blindfolded chimp could make a stellar blend, keep that in mind whenever you
read flowery prose in a coffee shop. The blindfolded chimp would get just as
good of results as any meticulously careful roaster.
Trust me, I’m that chimp and every random blend I have ever made was
outstanding

[RBW] Re: Rusted lugged frame still in heavy use pics.

2018-02-25 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't think you were trolling. I do think the bike in question is not
very Rivish: skinny skinny tires, carbon wheel, saddle rails, & fork, aero
bars, radial spoking, STI shifting, huge saddle to bar drop and no way to
raise the threadless stem, racing gearing and geometry. Apparently the
frame was built by the owner and broke at least once. It's not completely
clear but it appears there may be a significant crack at the top of the
seat tube where it meets the seat stay. Might be due for another repair.
And while I am the last person to criticize patina, this to me is bordering
on neglect/abuse ( I get the "rusty patina" thing, and that it has been a
topic, and some Riv bars have gotten the treatment, but still) . It could
certainly be an interesting bicycle to some people on this list, but I
don't think it has all that much relevance to the focus of this list. (Cue
the "of course it's relevant" contingent;^). That may be why it got the
"troll" reaction. Not a capital offence, but probably a better fit over on
iBOB or some of the other forums around town.

Re: [RBW] How avoid sore throats from riding in cold weather?

2018-02-25 Thread EasyRider
Patrick, for me the benefit of the Neti pot is that it clears out my nasal
passage so excess "stuff" isn't slowly draining. It also seems to head off
stuffy ears. Generally, it makes me feel better. You'll want to use distilled
or boiled water and a saline solution or it will sting a bit and could
introduce pathogens.

I had a cold a few weeks back and noticed that if I drank a cold glass of water
or Gatorade, my throats would hurt almost immediately, and/or I would cough
right away. I googled it, and What I read was, cold irritates the mucus lining
of the throat, makes it shrink, and makes the throat more vulnerable to
irritants and pathogens.

I too avoid antihistamines. Perhaps sipping warm water or honey tea while
riding, or sucking a lozenge, might help counteract the effect of cold air?

Re: [RBW] How avoid sore throats from riding in cold weather?

2018-02-25 Thread Ray Varella
Patrick,
I use something similar to a nettipot but rather than passively
pouring the solution into your nose, this is a soft squeezable bottle with a
tube that goes to the bottom.
You put it in one nostril and squeeze hard, then do the other nostril the same
way.

It’s called Niel Med. it comes with little envelopes of a powdered solution of
salt and baking soda. IIRC
You dissolve one envelope into the bottle filled with warm water.

The allergy doctor that suggested it to me thought the guy that came up with it
should have received a Nobel prize.

The first couple times you use it, you’ll have flashbacks of the first time you
jumped into water and didn’t know you should hold your nose.

For me, it works great. I have seasonal allergies and it’s exceedingly rare
that I need anything other than the Neil med.

It flushes out your nasal passages and prevents all the gunk from dripping down
the back of your throat.

Our lung functions are reduced by about 35% when we are lying down and that
also prevents us from expelling mucous that we would while awake and standing
or sitting.

Re: [RBW] Re: 29 x 2.3-2.5 Knobby Tire & Rim Recommendations for Clem.

2018-02-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Regarding wide tires: I agree that adding significant weight on the
perimeter of the wheels is a good way to slow down both acceleration and
handling, but I have to say that compared to the 360 gram 50 mm F Freds, the
new-to-me Big Ones on the Matthews -- 440 grams!!! (well, I've seen them
range from 420 to 460) for true 60 mm!!! -- float over sand better, and
roll even faster on pavement, at least to judge this latter by the feel of
maintaining cadences in given conditions. Really wonderful tires! Besides,
they give the already somewhat industrial looking Matthews an even more
agressive, intimidating appearance, and that's what we all want, right?
(Before you get all indignant, consider whether this remark is earnest or
not.)

OTOH, I look forward to the day, perhaps, when I'll get a second wheelset
to run skinny Snoqualmie Pass tires tubeless, or perhaps even Barlow
Passes. But for local conditions, fatter is better, ceteris paribus.

[RBW] FS/T: Brooks Cambium C17, VO Porteur Chaincase

2018-02-25 Thread Jeremy Till
(x-post from iBOB, apologies to those seeing it twice)

Two items for sale or trade. Pictures are here
.

   - Used Brooks C17 Cambium, black. Bought used by me in September last
year, and ridden for a few months on my mountain bike (so I was standing up
a lot). I've once again come to the conclusion that Brooks saddles don't
really work for my anatomy. In very good shape, only signs of wear is some
almost unnoticeable fraying around the edges of the saddle at its widest
   point. $75 shipped.
   - Velo-Orange Porteur Chaincase. These are no longer produced by VO,
but a local LBS had one in back stock that I bought impulsively as I was
building up a bike specifically for commuting .
In the end I decided not to use it, so I thought I'd make it available to
the general public. The perfect item to finish off your constructeur city
bike build, or maybe your Frank Jones Sr? $60 shipped. Includes all
   hardware.

I would entertain offers for trades, partial or whole. Items I'm
interested in:

   - WTB Pure V (aka "Pure") saddles, especially Team or Pro models,
especially ones lacking seams in the seating area and silly graphics.
   - Good, fast, 700x28 tires, skinwall preferred. Soma Supple Vitesse or
Panaracer Gravel King Slicks would be ideal.
   - Good, fast, 700x38-42 tires, similar to above. Soma SV, Panaracer
Gravel King, Compass Barlow Pass, etc. Don't care about sidewall color on
   this one.
   - B Secula Plus for Fender, or other similarly modern LED fender
mounted tailight compatible with a Luxos U headlight.

I am located in Sacramento, CA.

Re: [RBW] fixed-free hubs & chain line

I have an 1/8" chainring, cog and chain on my SO.
With the stock BB I experienced some "grunchiness" and observed some odd

I replace the BB with a Phil unit and got the chain line as straight as I
could. It's been great ever since.

I'll be setting up another single speed soon and am considering my options
for hubs/wheels. Though I've never used a fw on my SO, I'm thinking I may
want easy flipping fixed / free on the new bike. I like the allen bolts,
high flanges with cut outs, etc of the Paul hubs, but I'm thinking having a
different chain line on the fixed and free sides of the hub might not play
well if I stay with 1/8" chainrings and cogs. On the other hand the fw
would still be 3//32" so perhaps the chainline being off when I flip to
that side would be fine.

[RBW] Re: 29 x 2.3-2.5 Knobby Tire & Rim Recommendations for Clem.

2018-02-25 Thread David B
My thought was to get the widest possible tires to fulfill my desires for a
plus bike. I've sort of resolved not too buy another bike for a long while
and ride what I have. I also was pondering this idea in the middle of a big
snowfall. All snow is gone now, however the river trail I ride floods
regularly and leaves the trail very muddy at times and I prefer wider tires
for that type of thick mud.
However, it's all sort of moot now as it was warm enough for Clem to take
back his typical duties, going for rides with my son on a rear set. I did
pick up a set of Ardents that I might play around with next winter.

Re: [RBW] How avoid sore throats from riding in cold weather?

2018-02-25 Thread Patrick Moore
With me, the drip is either allergies or native, since I have had it all
the time, as a youth and in age, even when in bed or sitting at breakfast,
and not only when exercising -- which is why the first few miles are always
devoted to "blowing out the pipes." I know that it is this that "tickles"
the lungs and I hear that it is this that inflames the throat, but I expect
there is an immune system factor involved, too, since I am far more likely
to have the trickle turn into a sore throat when I am tired or stressed or
have exerted myself too much. I smoked cigarettes (and pipes and cigars
too, for that matter) for ~25 years; and as a boy I recall riding hard up
hills in the wake of black-smoke-belching buses and trucks (in 1971, at 5K+
feet, in Africa, many of your buses and trucks put out barely more
horsepower than I did, but put out opaque black clouds of exhaust, and I'd
pace them up long hills, inhaling the crap).

And, though I have the same trickles in warm weather, they don't cause me
sore throats then; I pop Yin Xiao only between November and March.

Covering the neck -- religiously wearing a scarf -- and staying out of
drafts seems to help; or perhaps it's the other way around: leaving the
neck exposed to cold and wind, and standing in a cold draft, makes a sore
throat more likely.

In any event, such discussions help me think through the matter, and at
least clarify what might be and what does not seem to be a cause.

winter riding (granted we’ve has a wimpy winter in terms of snow depth). My
Hunqapillar handles better with liteskin 2.1” ThunderBurts than with wider and
heavier tires. On my QB now (the only bike I’ve ridden since November), 38mm
Steilacooms are brilliant. Where the line is for a given
bike/rider/terrain/riding surface is going to vary significantly, but there is
a point of diminishing returns. With good riding skill, the number of places I
think “I wish I had a wider tire” is near nothing vs. the distance I ride in

2018-02-25 Thread masmojo
I was running some wide knobbies on my Clementine for a short time, but I
didn't like them so I took them off. The bike is a bit heavy & running some
heavy knobbies just accentuated that feeling. I finally settled on running a
2.1ish knobby up front & a Big Ben out back.
Now when I was biilding my Surly Ogre up, I bought a set of wheels that came
with premounted Continental Race Kings. I anticipated that any tire that came
on an economical set of wheels would be terrible, but to my surprise they were
really great & I think they would excel on a Clem as well! They don't feel too
heavy & the sidewall is really not too stiff, so they handle very well on most
surfaces.

I feel the same way, however I know for a fact that the MUSA stuff is a net
money loser. As I mentioned in the hail mary thread, they have to buy
full runs of each size in minimum quantities, and lots of it languishes on
the shelf. Look how long the small and xxl shorts have been on the sale

is a labor of love and probably not feasible under current circumstances.
I sure hope there's more eventually, though.

I would like to see Riv make a bigger commitment to their entire clothing

I've pretty much hit a wall in terms of hardware needs. But I'm always in
the market for practical, unracer clothing that's suitable both on and off

morphing into LL Bean, but the fact remains that I have zero need for

Anyway, I'd buy a Hunqapillar t-shirt if they made one.

Re: [RBW] Re: fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread Patrick Moore
I wish I could get even close to concentric! I find that Pro 5 Vis rings in
particular -- or perhaps it's the spiders -- are always very eccentric,
despite juggling; more so than all the Sugino 110s I've used. But I've only
had 1 really egregious Pro 5 Vis ring, that practically had an eliptical
orbit, that threw a chain when the chain was too loose -- this after 15 or
18 years of using this stuff.

Re: [RBW] fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread Patrick Moore
BTW, I agree with the others that 3/32 cogs and derailleur chain works more
than fine for fixed and ss applications. What's neat is that you can use,
say, a 10 speed chain for your 3/32 track cog and join the ends with a 8
speed masterlink (all of which I've done).

[RBW] Re: fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread BSWP
I'm running a 1/8 chain on my QuickBeam, which has a single ring in front,
and a Dos Eno and fixed cog on the rear. My chain line is not "perfect" but
I'm not seeing any unusual wear on the cogs - that is, the wear seems even
on both sides. What I find more critical is getting the front chain ring
perfectly concentric with the BB spindle. This takes time and patience, to
achieve uniform chain tension through the entire rotation of the big ring.
When it's just right, it's delicious!

[RBW] Re: fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread Jeremy Till
I'm not sure what you mean by "normal width gears" but I ran flip-flop hubs
for many years with 3/32" chains (usually SRAM 8spd ones) and the
chainlines on each side of the hub were always close enough. Honestly, I
was never precise about measuring rear chainline. I just tried to get my
chainring as close to 42mm as possible, that being the nominal chainline
for the "standard" flip-flop hubs I was using (Formula, Phil, Surly). I do
remember that Paul hubs used a non-standard chainline, something like
44mm?

Unless you're doing a build that completely uses track components (in which
case you'd be less likely to be using a flip-flop hub with freewheel), I
feel like 3/32" is the way to go for real-world single cog setups. Many
more options for crank/chainring choices, easier/cheaper to find
high-quality chains, more tolerant of slight chainline error, etc

[RBW] fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ted, the details of chainline and all the factors that go into it are lost on
me. I work with Rivendell to guide me through it in setting things up. However,
I’ve learned that many single/fixed freewheels/cogs that aren’t track specific
say they are designed for 8 or 9 speed, especially Dos ENO, Dingle Cogs, etc.
Everything I’ve seen says 1/8 chain is not what it used to be, so the arguement
of longer life is moot. I just ride 9-speed chain, which is designed to have
some flex in chainline, so the minor differences in a singlespeed or fixed set
up will be no big deal, especially compared with a 9-speed cassette and triple
chainring. Not sure if that helps you or not.

With abandon,
Patrick

Yes, or one using the art that a list member recently shared for a poster,

Stocking the sizes, colors, then print costs, etc. you don't really make

[RBW] Re: Unsafe helmets

2018-02-25 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Since I've said the same thing to a number of group members who contacted
me privately:

February/March has been a tough month historically. It's when comments
seem to suddenly turn caustic and umbrage taken in excess of what is
appropriate. It hasn't played out for a few years now, but event back when
we numbered in the hundreds and this was an email-based group, it would
rear up, making good & calm individuals suddenly edgy and flippant. Then it
would spiral in intensity until needlessly nasty words spilled out. We'd
have to do a bit of a hard reset.

The best way to end a thread is not respond to it.

The quality of this list is dependent upon the members. A good signal to
noise ratio depends upon good signal levels.

Thank you all for your continued contributions to this group.

[RBW] BUY A FRAMESET OR JUST SOME PARTS

2018-02-25 Thread Jon Dukeman,central Colorado
Everyone here knows Rivendell means quality as well as comfort and quality
performance. They sell what they ride and it just works.
Now is the time to buy a frameset that you have always wanted. If not for
now maybe to build up later.
If you can't swing a frameset.Stock up some parts for your existing Riv
bike. You are going to need at some point chains, chain rings,
cassettes, new cables and housing, tubes & tires. How about those cork
grips, bar tape? They would look good on that special handle bar you have
always wanted to try. If you have a front rack you should try one of those
Wald medium baskets with a basket net to hold your shop sack in place.
Now is the time to get parts for your salty commuter bike and be ready for
spring.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Reimagined

2018-02-25 Thread Austin
Beautiful build Tim--your post in a word is: Inspiring!

Part of my affliction, (er "hobby") is reimagining how my bikes are
configured. Having 3 bikes, I am constantly swapping out parts, testing &
learning. riding, and standing back to admire what I've created. It helps
to keep my n+1 desires in check and is very much in line with Patrick's
sentiment. One of the things I like about Rivendell in general and the Sam
in particular is how well these bikes take to my tinkering. And outside of
truing a wheel or making frame repairs, I'm a self-sufficient bike mechanic
as a result. I learn so much and get so many ideas reading post from people
on this group.

If it ever stops raining here in Maryland today, I'm getting out on my
identically-framed 2TT 62cm Sam. Until then, I'll be out in the garage...

Cheers,
Austin

[RBW] Sam Hillborne Reimagined

2018-02-25 Thread Tim Bantham
Hello Riv Friends, Not long ago I posted about possibly replacing my Sam
with a Roadini. I had switched my existing Sam to an upright touring rig
but missed riding my drop bar bike. I ended up buying a new Appaloosa to be
my touring/camping bike and I rebuilt my Sam into a sporty road bike. We
had a rare break in the winter weather so yesterday I took it out for a 15
mile ride. It was glorious! As I was riding I was thinking about Deacon
Patrick's advice of having gratitude for what I already own. Of course his
words were much more eloquent then that but the basic premise of his
message was the same. I am so thankful I listened to DP because the Sam is
just about the perfect bike for going out on my version of a fast road
ride.

Build Details:

62cm Sam Hillborne 2TT
Wheels - Alex Rims - original stock
Tires - 38 mm Compass Barlow Pass
Fenders - 45 mm Velo Orange Hammered Aluminum
Cranks: Sugino 175mm 48x34 rings
Brakes: Paul Racer with Paul Moon Units
Cassette: SRAM 12x34
Chain: KMC X9
Saddle: Brooks B17 Special
Saddle Bag: Sackville X-Small
Bars: 46cm Nitto Noodle
Stem: Nitto 8cm
Pedals: Shimano PDA600

[RBW] fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread ted

I would like some advice please.

>From experience I've found that a 1/8" track ring/cog/chain drive train can
be particular about chain line.
I've noticed that the chainline for the fixed and free sides of the Paul
high flange hub are different.
So now I'm wondering, is that typical for fixed-free hubs?
Does the thinner cog on a single speed fw afford enough slop that one can
set up the fixed side precisely with 1/8" stuff and the fw flip side will
be fine?
Should I stick with normal width gears if I'm going to use a fixed-free hub
on a one speed?

thanks for any help

ted

They would be nice to collect.
