Re: [RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-25 Thread jason
I agree that the classic Atlantis is / was a perfect bicycle.I find it so
perfect that I now own three of them for no good reason other than my Deep
appreciation for the classic design. After riding a 61 for 14 years I wondered
if a 58 would fit me slightly better and bought bill Lindsey’s. It rides
especially well for me on the trail. I still prefer the 61 though for touring.
After I heard about the redesign, and stumbled across a good deal on a used 61,
I bought that too as an insurance policy in case I ever found my original 61
stolen and couldn’t purchase the original design. I now have three of
essentially the same bicycle.

For those who have an unhealthy relationship to the current design like I do, I
believe I’m a living testament to the fact that options do exist for those of
us with strange attachement to the current designs. They show up used from
time and it sounds like the original design isn’t going anywhere soon, just at
the current price.

I suspect I will try and buy the new design as well, like it, find some absurd
justification for keeping all of them, and bring my total Atlantis collection
to four.

I say no need to worry about the new long chain stays. There are options for
those of us with “issues.”

[RBW] WTB/ Double kickstand recommendations (non-pletscher)

2018-03-25 Thread Deacon Patrick
We decided that unless it’s a solid built-in kickstand like on the Haul-a-day
or Bakfiets, it wasn’t worth the risk. We do everything while straddling the
bike, holding it up ourselves. Limits some options, but, at least on our uneven
terrain around here, we think it was safer that way. Besides, that’s what older
kids are for — hold the bike up while we load your sister. Grin.

With abandon,

I’ve bumped mine quite a few times and there is no visible sign of having done

I was also careful not to over tighten the mounting nut so it has a very tiny

tight as to distort the fender.

All in all, I’ve been very satisfied with the light.

The 1983 850 is my favorite all time mountain bike. I bought a 520 in 1983 and
really wanted the 850 too. They were notable in having better to my liking,
anyway) geometry than other MTBs of the day - steeper angles than the klunker
bikes (but not NORBA steep), but still long chainstays. The color scheme was
fantastic too. I bet it rides great with Rat Traps.

I wasn't able to afford a second bike until 1987, when I got my 830 Antelope. I
love that bike, and still have it, but always wished I had the '83. I'm jealous!

[RBW] Riv-ified Trek 850 Commuter.

2018-03-25 Thread David B
Got a box from Riv and finished up a build of a bike that jumped around on the
iBOB list. I bought it, sold it, it spent some time in Portland, then headed
back my way.
1x7 drivetrain, new wheels, Rat Trap Pass tires with room for fenders, Wald
basket.
This was the first year Trek offered a mountain bike and they basically made a
touring bike with 26” wheels and gobs of clearance.
This one’s a 62cm. If Rivendell ever offered a tall Atlantis with 26” wheels,
it be pretty darn close to this.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB - Old / used / cheap 650B tires

2018-03-25 Thread Tom M
This doesn't help you with used, but Riv does sell Continental basketball
tires in 32mm
(https://www.rivbike.com/collections/tires/products/tire-650b-x-2-continental-basketball?variant=3669081161741),

which are available. Amazon sells Nifty Swifty tires, which are slightly
wider
(https://www.amazon.com/Panaracer-Nifty-Swifty-32-8mm-Black/dp/B001AH5WRI).
I have these on my 650b conversion, for the same reason as you—I doubt my
frame will fit anything much wider than 34mm. Even with the compromise in
tire size and quality (compared with, say, Compass), I'm pretty happy with
the conversion. The 32mm tires are better than the 26mm I was running for
the roads where I live, and the lowered bottom bracket height makes the
bike more stable for me.

Good luck with you project,

[RBW] crack of dawn Alamodome sprint

2018-03-25 Thread Ron Mc
I have photos worth posting today.
First, got my 100 this week, and Randi and I had a great ride yesterday -
she chased me 35 greenway miles and did respectably well in my favorite
stretch-out climb; stop for great Thai food at mile 28. Seems to be really
good Thai, but tough to say after you've just burned 2000 calories - it may
be terrible and we'd never know it. The cucumber soup stands out, and the
fish sauce was so good we were dipping lettuce in it to keep grazing.

Meeting again before dawn this morning, asked Randi if she was mad at me
for yesterday. Said no, she felt great, but was too tired to do anything
else yesterday.
This morning we couldn't get to the Alamodome because of Final Four, so we
changed the sprint route just a bit to land nextdoor at Sunset Station.
I finished 3rd in a very aggressive and tight lead group, and of course
John was number 1. Not too condescending, John asked me if I had been
eating my wheaties - no, I blame my reserve strength on Miss Annie's Pecan
Brittle (he doesn't remember I smoked him last week on my '74
International).

That's the Alamodome in the back (I analyzed weld failures on the
suspension gussets when it was under construction)

 Sherrie and
Randi

Ed debuted his 30s Durkopp track bike, and Tad on his pretty chrome Lygie

a good group joined us for coffee, and Francesca looking sharp in her
Italian shoes

when we were arriving for coffee, another bike boom classic arrived - can
anyone identify this Supreme 12? - I got some decent photos of Ed's new
beauty

wood rims, red anodized hubs (yes, they did that in the 30s) with flip-top
oil port, soldered spokes, sexy drivetrain

didn't get good photos of Tad's Lygie, and sorry, my attempted macro of the
solid-link chain on the 30s Durkopp didn't get focus.
When we left the coffee it turned cold and light rain - wasn't supposed to
happen, so I got back in the zone to keep warm and blew everyone away
climbing back to Alamo Heights.

[RBW] FS Sackville and Brooks

2018-03-25 Thread Steve Butcher

Hello, I'm offering for sale my size medium Sackville Saddlesack in the now
discontinued dark gray/brown leather color scheme. I purchased it new
about a year ago and used it on my Rosco Bubbe for my short commute to
work. It is in excellent condition and always stored indoors. It has been
in a light shower only once or twice. Included is an extra 17 inch
Sackville leather strap. I've decided to carry my stuff in my Clem basket
and sack on the front. Also, for sale is my lightly used Brooks B67. It
is in excellent condition with only some scratches on the black painted
rails from mounting. I have had it about 2 years and treated it a couple
of times with VO saddle treatment. It has always been stored indoors and
has never been wet. I've decided I prefer the C17 on my commuter bike, so
don't need the B67. I'd like to get $200.00 for the Saddlesack and $100.00
for the B67. Both include shipping CONUS. Please PM me with questions.
Thanks for looking.

2018-03-25 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I've tried really hard, twice to like the bars, first with the OE, then the
Stache. My problem is with the brake levers. No matter how I set them up,
brake access sucks. I have a weird ulnar positive issue, with stiff
wrists. I have to drop my elbows and rotate my wrist too far to reach the
levers quickly. Original WTB-Nitto dirt drop bars work for me. They have
enough flare and drop.

It's Really Not. No one's hand is shaped like the curves. You use the
outer half of the curves, and then it fits hands perfectly, but the sweet
spot is on the wide hoods (actually, palm resting on bar, loosely grabbing
the wide hoods). No one seems to be lukewarm on these bars, it's always
love or hate, but I think the latter has to do with putting hands in the
center of the curves. . .

Joe,

I had them most recently with a Technomic. What I’ve found is I just don’t like
to be upright and so I found myself grabbing the very front part of the bar,
which as you know doesn’t give you much to play with.

One of these days I am going to pop in at RBW and try the Albastache on a demo.

[RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-25 Thread Ruben Flores
Well I have one (actually two) of these in my hand. it replaces the entire
upper portion of a headset, I have no idea how it will work.

it has a cup that will be pressed into the frame but does not have a
"race", on top of that a bearing cage then a cone nut (the only threaded
part in the whole assembly) then a metal ring with all the locking holes
then the plastic top cap snap in.

Seems very odd, but as my long time riding buddy said "it's Shimano, it
will work perfectly to it's design. You may not like the design but some
engineers studied this forever"

Ruben with his fingers still crossed

[RBW] Sackville Banana Sax

2018-03-25 Thread Bradley Waffa
For those with experience with the Sackville Banana Sax, have you had any
issues with it rubbing your leg, particularly when climbing out of the
saddle, or is it fairly well-tucked behind the saddle? I'm looking for a
reasonably sized saddle bag for gravel brevets, but trying to avoid the
need for a separate saddlebag support system. Thanks for any insights!

Brad

[RBW] Stolen Bike

2018-03-25 Thread Tom McIntyre
Early morning Wednesday March 21 someone entered our lower level at 449
Buena Vista Ave E. The most valuable item stolen was my wife Laura's
bicycle, a Rivendell "A Homer Hilsen in powder blue. 650CM wheels, 54 cm
frame. Like this picture but with a single top tube. $500 reward for
recovery.
"https://www.rivbike.com/collections/framesets/products/a-homer-hilsen. I
have reported this information to the police.
Whoever stole this would probably rather have $, any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks

Joe, I've been following your different approaches and ideas for the
Cheviot and it's been literally inspiring (and technically helpful). Thanks
for thinking out loud and the compliment.

Those Yepp Maxi Next (I think?) rear seats look perfect. I have about a year to
figure that out for her. Seem here:
