2018-05-12 Thread Adam in Indiana
I have to agree, having a brazed on canti hanger "hanging" there unused while
using v-brakes would bother me for whatever unsound reason...

I have one of Surly's cable hangers, very similar to Nitto's. They really do
an elegant job of the whole thing.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog and Coconut Oil

2018-05-12 Thread Austin B.
Good point about doctors knowing so much that isn't true! How many times
does the medical guidance flip-flop on coffee? (and I love my coffee!)

My doctor did admit there was little research available on the health
benefits of coconut oil, despite his hesitations. It's one
easily-replaceable food to let go of. He didn't try to get me off the low
carb eating--how could he, all my other numbers were up!

I will continue with my low-carb eating ways. It just works for me on so
many levels.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog and Coconut Oil

2018-05-12 Thread Dave Small
I've done my own research on cholesterol and agree with Deacon.

I've been keto since last June. I pig out on meat and eggs and low-carb
vegetables, and don't count calories but keep my daily carb count below
about 35 grams. During the first 6 months or so I lost weight, rapidly at
first then more slowly until it leveled off and has been remarkably
consistent over the past 3 months or so. I now weigh more than I did in
high school but less than I did in college, which I never ever thought
would happen. I feel better, look better, have more energy, and the belly
I carried with me for 40 years is gone. I could go on, but it's all in the
same vein. The only downside is that I've had to buy all new clothes, but
I can live with that.

I was scheduled to go in for a physical about a month after I started keto,
and postponed it 3 months so I'd be stable on keto when I had my blood work
done. All my blood lipids were well within the "normal" range, and my
total cholesterol was lower than it's ever been. I've never had a total
cholesterol concentration that was above the threshold for "high," but it
was typically not far south of that. It's 35 points lower now, and well
within anyone's definition of normal. It's counterintuitive that all those
ribs and sausage and eggs and hamburger would lower my cholesterol, but it
did.

I've come to believe that most of what we've been taught about diet is
wrong. Cholesterol has long been one of the medical community's boogymen,
and I just don't buy it. I don't see that eliminating coconut oil will do
anything, but if you want to try it then it certainly won't hurt anything.

Dave

[RBW] Nitto rack on the Big Step-through

2018-05-12 Thread MartyG
I think this came up a while back: The Granary Bicycle Company selling
custom Nitto front racks for cheap. (as in $49.00) I took a chance and
bought one, hoping it might work on one of my Riv bikes. (Well, that and
it's my namesake rack for pete's sake!) Turns out it works great with Paul
cantis with the Paul rack bolt - something that has defied every rack I've
tried because the brake with rack-bolt sticks out so far. A little minor
tweaking and it dropped right in. Bigger than the standard Nitto mini, with
a headlight mount and fender boss. I like it!

Your application may vary, but for Paul brake bikes this may be the ticket.
Still available at $49.00.

[RBW] Eat Bacon Don't Jog and Coconut Oil

2018-05-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Great job! Cholesterol isn’t what doctors think it is, doesn’t mean what
doctors think it means, and cholesterol blood work doesn’t mean what they think
it means. This is the conclusion I came to based on personal experience as well
as a variety of research, which is well summed up in various posts on Mark
Sisson’s blog. https://www.marksdailyapple.com/?s=cholesterol

My suspicion is that a body that has been high carb for a lifetime and become
low carb takes time to adjust, so number may spike in the first year plus. Mine
spiked, freaked out my doctor, but I told her I wasn’t going to change anything
and I was not going on any meds. She’s since shrugged, acknowledging doctors
have a lot they don’t know but think they do (like what to do with people like
me!), so no reason to test further unless I want to know my numbers. I don’t.

When I was in for emergency surgery at some point, we had to constantly monitor
that they did not sneak glucose drips onto my IV. They were baffled by my
ketone numbers, thinking I had diabetes (nothing even close), and they kept
trying to slam water into me thinking I was dehydrated (I wasn’t). I just
fasted the whole time I was there (that really freaked them out!). Pretty sure
they were happy to see my dressed backside head out the door. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Betty's an eBike Now

2018-05-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Hi KC, I'll PM you about specific kit stuff, but will address the bike
candidate question here.

All things being equal - especially with the absurdly powerful motor I'm
running, this thing would get me tossed out of Europe - a bike with v-brakes or
discs like your SOMA can run is a better idea. My Cheviot is a great platform
due to the stable handling, long wheelbase and low stepover, but it's my eRiv
because I wanted a Cheviot and started it as a regular 2-speed bike, then
decided it would be fun with a motor. I'm an experienced ebiker who knows how
to avoid getting into braking situations that aren't healthy, and just added
those funky red pads to increase the calipers' grip, but realistically this
bike is underbraked for the application.

For anyone who really likes Rivs and really wants an electric one, get one of
the long-stay canti/v-brake models. A mid-drive MIT Atlantis would be
fantastic!

[RBW] Eat Bacon Don't Jog and Coconut Oil

2018-05-12 Thread Austin B.
So I've been doing the low-carb Eat Bacon Don't Jog thing since the
beginning of the year. Over the past several months I've experimented found
some good, low carb eats. A few of my go-to's:

   - Frittatas with ham, sausage, bacon and/or veggies
   - Fake pancakes (from EBDJ)
   - Coconut "cereal" with greek yogurt and macadamia nuts (also EBDJ)
   - Almonds
   - Bacon!
   - Eggs of all kinds
   - Salmon with avacado, fresh chunky salsa, pepper, cheese and a
hard-boiled egg as a brown-bag lunch at work
   - 85%-90% Dark Chocolate as a dessert treat
   - And others...

I've also been doing a large glob of coconut oil + heavy cream in my
morning coffee for breakfast. (I've gotten to prefer it that way). Based on
EBDJ chapter, it looked like it had many benefits--and I had also done some
research that it can increase LDL (bad cholesterol). But it would also
keep me going until lunch pretty consistently.

The results?

   - Eating significantly less processed foods
   - I've lost about 13 lbs.
   - I don't get hunger pangs/cravings, etc. and can easily turn away
   snacks.

However, just back from the doctor yesterday with results of my annual
blood panel. My LDL (normally very low) had risen just over the "high"
level of 126 and my total cholesterol had risen as well. Had a conversation
with my doctor about it and he convinced me to abandon the coconut oil. I'm
now trying a pat of butter + cream in my coffee as breakfast now.

All that said, my other markers were all improved and my blood glucose
decreased a good bit (blood glucose + weight loss was my main reason for
starting all this). I will continue my low-carb ways minus the coconut oil
and continue to research ways to get the LDL number down.

Curious what others do on this diet, what they've learned, and what their
results have been. Please share!

[RBW] Re: GDMBR with Adventure Cycling

2018-05-12 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Hey Bill,

Have a BLAST on the GDMBR! Looks like you have prepped very well.

Will the ACA allow you to start from Jasper, this being the 20th
Anniversary of the GD? The ACA is supposed to have the map section for the
Canada portion updated to have the new terminus in Jasper (vs. Banff) by
June 15th or so. An additional 387 miles, through some of the most
gorgeous scenery on the planet. My wife called and their website says June
15 but verbally they are not committing to any specific date for public
availability of the revised map section :(

My wife and I are headed back up to Butte, MT late June / early July. We
are northbounders. Last year we departed Puerto Palomas (alternate
end/start) and made it to Butte before the first snows hit in
mid-September. We hit the pause button in 2017. So, we are hitting the
re-start button and maybe we will encounter you later this year? When do
you depart?

Best regards,

Jeff

[RBW] Re: Betty's an eBike Now

2018-05-12 Thread KC
Joe, you have obviously converted several bikes to ebikes. Looks like we
may be moving to a hilly area that may warrant conversions to get us
through a few areas. Not sure if I would convert my Cheviot or Soma Groove
(assume it can be converted and then I wouldn't be messing with my
favorite). Can you help with input on the process and determining if a
bike is good candidate? Please feel free to respond off the list if more
appropriate.
thx

Definitely not waterproof, which would likely make them hot and
