[RBW] Not so permanent Basket + Rack

2018-08-30 Thread Vincent Tamer
Anyone got any ideas for a detachable wald setup? I love baskets in the
practical sense but I think my favorite Riv Bike setup is med Saddle sack in
back and a track sack up front. It has a classy feel.

Do you think some kind of strap, either Irish or Voile/ski strap, would make a
good way of securing a basket for light and even med loads? This way it can be
removed or installed easily. I’m gonna try it this weekend but I’m curious if
any one else has.

I will certainly be careful in light of all this nitto basket rack hubbub

Andy, I didn’t realize the Braemar had pit zips? I don’t see this detail on

I’d like it more if the D-rings were positioned in such a way as to allow

benefit from that as well and would see a ton more use in my case. Just park
the bike, detach bag, put over the shoulder and go to the office / meeting /

2018-08-30 Thread Garth

Oh heck, I don't mean to diminish the idea of such a group Lum . It would be
great if every part, no matter what it was, was offered in the colors you
wanted without having to compromise at all in any way. I find myself saying
that as if it's not possible, but says who and who made them any sort of
authority on "everything" ? The so called local-authorities, only speak to
"save their own ass", to keep up the facade of knowing anything more than what
they see and hear locally. Like a computer can only tell you what it was
programmed to put out, whether it's universally true or not it could never know
for again, it's "knowing" is limited to what it's told to "know".

So just what is possible, what already exists beyond one's own belittling
beliefs of limitation ? No man knows or will know, that's for sure. Infinity is
Infinite, afterall and that is undeniable 

Life Rocks !

[RBW] Re: Shimming middle chainring of sugino XD2 for 10 speed chain?

I had a shifting problem with an XD2; I wanted larger chainrings. Then the
chain was dropping between rings. I tried different rings of different

small aluminum shims. Plus, I had some shims off another crank. I measured
them with a micrometer to use all matching thickness; Finally, problem

[RBW] Sackville BagBoy

2018-08-30 Thread Pondero
One of the reasons, I like Sackville bags is the shape. The materials and
details are excellent, and they help make the bags enjoyable to use. But
the shape seems to work well for me in terms of "packability". In other
words, it seems like some bags (frame bags for example) that have lots of
cubic inches just can't hold some things. But that new BagBoy, with its
boxy shape look like it could hold all kinds of things. For me, that makes
it look like it packs bigger than in is. Kinda like a ShopSack. I'm
seriously considering the BagBoy.

[RBW] Re: Would it be fun to have an all SILVER group?

2018-08-30 Thread Garth

Fwiw , As noted by Rich @riv the hubs are no longer offered. The only thing
I see a possibility of is maybe a rim for the upcoming mtn. bikey. The
parts they do offer seem more out of necessity , even the crank as it is
offered in lengths unavailable from Sugino, and XD isn't that great of a
crank at all frankly.

As for the rest I don't see it happening for 2 reasons: 1.
Cost(manufacturing, R, lots of parts to $tock, etc.) and 2. Already
existing alternatives.

I'm at the place in my life where I really don't care if all parts are all
this or that just parts that work/fit well. I spend about 0 hours
contemplating "the looks" of bikes ... no knock on anyone that does.

[RBW] Would it be fun to have an all SILVER group?

2018-08-30 Thread Lum Gim Fong
So far they have made:
Hubs, crankset, brake calipers, chainrings, Shifters.

All we need now are brake levers, headset, bb, rims, cassettes, seatpost,
stem (maybe the lugged NITTO qualifies).
That would be neat to have an all SILVER build on a Rivendell!

I have a chainring and DT Silver shifters on my bike.

Anyone have the whole group from the first line above?

[RBW] Re: Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-08-30 Thread Lum Gim Fong

I run my 132.5 dropout Rambouillet at 135.
But it is funny how I have had two sets of 135mm rear wheels and one
required me to pull out on the 132.5 dropout/chainstays to fit, the other
fit right in without any chainstay manipulation necessary.
Both were LX hubs, iirc.
The newest one fits just like it was a 132.5 hub. No spreading or pinching
necessary. Maybe cold set from the first hub I used on there? Maybe LX hub
width has a 2.5+/- tolerance?

[RBW] Northeast Riv Unmeeting 2018, Interest/Headcount, Columbus Day Weekend

2018-08-30 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Hello Northeast Rivs!

There's been hints at getting something going for people in the northeast
this year. This is the "official" invite. Weigh in if you have interest
and we'll make it happen.

The general plan:

-Meet in Pittsford, NY

-Day 1 Ride ~30 miles (+/- roughly 1,000 ft elevation) of mixed
path/gravel and secondary roads south to this park on Canandaigua Lake:

http://townofcanandaigua.org/portfolio_page.asp?id=2

(Former YMCA camp, bunch of cabins available right now so I don't think we
would have any issues making reservations)

-Day 2 ~30 ish mile loop around one of the other lakes, lunch, maybe take
in a local brew haus...route TBD. Return to the camp/cabins.

-Day 3 ~40 miles (+/- 1,000 elevation) back north along a different route.
Again a mixed bag of secondary roads and gravel/paths.

Mix in plenty of rest stops, taking in the scenes, leisure, snacks, general
merriment.

Could be 10/5, 6, 7 or 10/6, 7, 8 depending upon who has Columbus Day
off/group preferences.

Here's a very general route using default google maps routes to give you a
flavor of the area...https://goo.gl/maps/3sgU1mjBvM32 Our route would be
a little more discerning.

In general I like the cabin idea as it makes the Just Ride ethos very easy
and accessible for everyone. Same with the mileage, 30-40 mile days are
accessible for most people even without any prep. There could always be a
more camping "epic" fully loaded jambaroo some other time.

Sowhat do you think?

At 102 years old I play to convert to upright bars on most of my large

Does height make a difference, since my BPH is 99.5 it would be good to know if
I might need to make the transition before 100 or after 105.

[RBW] Re: How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-30 Thread Kieran J
I would NEVER ride any bike that was special to me in the winter on salted
roads, wet or dry. That is a death sentence for your drive train, and
possibly your steel or aluminum frame over the long run. If your commute is
22 miles, your bike will suffer. It takes no time for the lower half of
your bike to get coated in brine, and that's with fenders.

My years of commuting year round in Toronto have given me tons of aversion
to subjecting a bicycle to winter road conditions.

Wow, I could have started this exact topic.
I commute on a Canti-Rom with drops and ride recreationally on other bikes
with drops and one with a Bosco. Neck pain got so bad two months ago that I
stopped commuting and I haven't started up again. I just purchased an
Albatross cockpit from a list member but I have yet to install it as I'm
still holding out for the fountain of youth to return (I'm 54). After all,
I do see riders older than I in drops all the time.
As I was ramping up my riding this spring I did lots of stretching but
never thought to stretch my neck. Now I know. Sure, I read about neck pain
on the Rivbike.com but I always thought, "That would never happen to me."

Re: [RBW] Hilltrek Ventile Cotton Analogy Sale

2018-08-30 Thread ascpgh
I didn't option my Braemar with side zips, I get how they could be helpful
when getting out of the smock/anorak. Available on the customization
options for 50 BSP. As airflow is concerned, with my neck zip down and the
pit zips opened up, ventilation is not an issue. Certainly not for the
complication and $65 of the option. I vote with entropy; avoid unnecessary
complexities to assure prolonged baseline function.

I am very pleased with my garment and simply ecstatic to have found
something that is not synthetic, crunchy, stiff, and noisy. My experiences
with technical shells has been highlighted by inferior water repelling
performance, poor vapor ventilation, and lack of sustained function or
durability under regular use. I think my 2-3 year cycle of disappointment
with shell jackets is over now.

I picked red as Patrick did for the visibility practicality. I have both a
reflective mesh Nathan safety vest and reflective Tuvizo belt/shoulder
strap rig to wear on top if my visibility concerns are greater than that.

Re: [RBW] Hilltrek Ventile Cotton Analogy Sale

2018-08-30 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
John, I found the zips to be of minimal use and annoying on the bike, having to
tuck the front flap under to prevent flapping with each pedal stroke. The
standard smock easily bunches up a bit at the waist in front, still being
longer to cover my rear. My newer red smock does not have them and I prefer
their absence. Ventilation via neck and wrist openings works well.

I of course still sweat when riding, so repenting on temp, under layers get
damp (similar to a cotton long sleeve shirt on a hot day), and dry out quickly.
At temps below 40, a fishnet baselayer goes a long way to aiding this moisture
management.

With abandon,
Patrick

I ask because I have a bike with 10 speed indexing in need of a new

Re: [RBW] Shimming middle chainring of sugino XD2 for 10 speed chain?

2018-08-30 Thread Patrick Moore
With a 10 speed chains, I've only used Sugino and Vuelta, and there is no
difference in their performance.

Note, I use a 42 in the middle position and a 28 in the granny/inside
position; no outer (there's a guard there instead). But no problems
shifting between the inner 2 rings with 10 speed chains.

Patrick, have you found some chainrings better than others on on your Logic

work best. I don't have the 42t ring I need so I figure it can't hurt to

For example, Sugino sells quite a few triple cranksets with 110mm x 74mm

[RBW] Re: How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-30 Thread ascpgh
Plenty of road treatment in the winter precipitation here, it's cheaper
than plows to clear the accumulation and less damaging (read: less costly)
to patched roads come springtime. Dry salty winter roads are a momentary
status quickly overcome by the effect of the next precipitation or cycle of
thawing temps and sunshine.

I bought a sacrificial anode Disc Trucker commuter for those special
purpose, and put VO Zeppelin aluminum fenders on it. I add the Schwalbe
700x40 Winter Marathon tires for the very slippy conditions. No fears about
fender binding so far. Had the same set up before using a Karate Monkey
frame with drop bars.

Re: [RBW] Hilltrek Ventile Cotton Analogy Sale

2018-08-30 Thread john Bokman
Thanks Patrick and Andy for your assistance. Very interesting about the
coloration of cottons. I had no idea.

I’m not one who would wear “neon” green or yellow, but I’m partial to a “warm”
color like orange or red to be seen on the road.

Guys: Do you have size zips for your smock? I would suspect they’d not only
help with removal but with allowing more airflow?

I assume with the weight of the smock being over 2#, I would only need a thin
layer underneath and I’d be plenty warm. Most of my rain season (8 months a
year) riding is done at (wet) temperatures between 35-60 degrees.

Any additional comments on your products and use are welcome as I try to make
choices. I’m sick and tired of burning through plastics, no matter how
“advanced” or “improved”.

2018-08-30 Thread ascpgh
John, that's the item I have now, their Braemar smock, in red.

Fluorescent colors in fabrics are a bit more susceptible to UV degradation
of the pigments that produce the fluorescent color effect. The base fabric
dictates the necessity of chemical characteristics of a coloring dye,
cotton is one of the hardest to accommodate. If interested:
https://www.aatcc.org/media/Read/Newsletter/archive/2013/01A/The_Perils_and_Pitfalls_of_Dyeing_Neon_Colors.PDF

Back in my late '80s outdoor retail days, when fluorescent ("neon") colors
ruled ski gear, we had a one day in the window policy for displays. They
were rotated to even the exposure and the merchandisers had worksheets that
were kept by the displays near the UV blocking windows because we observed
fade from brief display in direct sunlight despite the glass choice, even
non-fluorescent colors.

Re: [RBW] Hilltrek Ventile Cotton Analogy Sale

2018-08-30 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
John, the “clear reason” for me to go with cotton analogy is it removes
moisture via capilary action. Otherwise, I agree, all cotton would be
preferable.

With abandon,
Patrick

I wouldn't call either 30 or 56 "old."  I'm 76.

How is a Clem giving up? :) Mine has a surprisingly spritely ride. The fat
tired and strong brakes are a big plus.

[RBW] Re: Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-08-30 Thread Fullylugged
For a few years, RBW sold models with 132.5mm rear spacing so you could use
130mm or 135mm hubs. Steel is flexible enough that you can spread even a 126mm
vintage frame open for modern 130 hubs. You can also have a frame cold set if
desired but I have never needed to.
