Re: [RBW] Re: Is 7 cm the shortest Tallux extension?

2018-09-06 Thread lconley
My 225 - 50 is a Technomic after all. It is forged however, it says so right on
the stem. The main difference appears to be the clamp bolt and the finishing is
slightly better on the 190 Tallux. And of course is says Technomic instead of
Nitto.

Whoever raced on these obviously doesn't read BQ or believe what they say.

I am sure RBW isn't pleased that others with no production stake in the
tires are going to undersell them.

[RBW] Re: The ups and downs of my Clem Smith Jr

2018-09-06 Thread Adam Leibow
I didn't read anyone else's replies so apologies if this is double
information - if you can find an ultegra 8s bar end shifter, you can use
this with a paul thumbie for an indexed 8speed thumb shifter setup. this
being said, a while back I ordered an 8spd thumb shifter from rivbike.com
- it was either sunrace or microshift, can't remember, but it worked
flawlessly with an Altus RD.

I just bought a nitto UI-12 (31.8 threaded stem) and Sycip JJJ mountain
bars. Going to put these on my clem. The nitto UI-12 stem really opens up a
lot of bar options, and Sycip and Hunter have some great silver bar options
with nice sweep and rise that would be great on a Clem. I'll post pics when
I receive this stuff in the mail & get it installed.

I saw the various Jack Browns and Fatty rumpkins mentioned @ the two

I've ordered stuff from them before, uneventfully perfect . The prices
fluctuate often, and shipping fluctuates wildly ! If it's really high one

[RBW] Anyone own a Clem H & Clem L?

2018-09-06 Thread Joe Bernard
David; I've owned a 45 H, and 52 H and L models. I put Bullmooses (original) on
the 52 H, which made it much more mtb-ish. I think a Bosco'd L and Bullmoose
(or Wavie) H will end up feeling like quite different bicycles, and is worth
the effort. Aside from the bar/tire differences, I found the L to have a
slightly softer ride due to the missing triangulation in the tubes..a bit of
noodliness through the frame, if you will. Turn that Clem H into a dirt bomber
and have fun!

They even have them with fun colored sidewalls. I'm gonna guess the ad copy
is tongue-in-cheek. It's pretty easy too find 'em on google. They say,
"Recently we were able to strike a deal with Rivendell cycles to take over
their tyre range including the Fatty Rumpkin, Maxy Fasty and our favourites
the Jack Browns." Does anyone know any specifics of that? Did Riv ever say
they were getting out of the tire business.

I can post some links or just company names if nobody objects, and if
anyone is interested.

[RBW] Re: Sharing a 52 Clem L with my much shorter spouse. Feasable? Crazy?

2018-09-06 Thread cam starnes
Oops. You’re right. My wife’s PBH is 2-2.5 INCHES lower than mine; several more
than 2 centimeters. I’m between 83 and 84 cm, my wife is right around 77. Also,
“slammed” is probably not a helpful term for me to have used - probably more
accurate to say that we set the saddle (Cambium C19) low enough for my wife
(77PBH) to be able to ride the 52 Clem that I would be surprised if someone
with 74PBH could get the saddle low enough to work. But I could certainly be
wrong. I suppose, as was pointed out, that if 74 is within Riv’s range it could
work. My Clem is an H, as well, but stand over height is not an issue for my
wife even then, and the L eliminates that as a concern altogether, of course.

[RBW] Anyone own a Clem H & Clem L?

2018-09-06 Thread David B
I ordered a Clem H in the intial pre-order group when Clems were originally
announced. I liked mine, got my wife a 45cm Clementine.
Mine was originally setup in commuter mode, but the past couple of years
it's been a kid hauler and in that setup I've wondered if I should've
gotten an L originally as I have a rear mount child seat which makes
mount/dismounting difficult.
I really like the swoopy seatstays, and have been waiting patiently for an
earlier 59cm Clem L with swoopy stays in grilver to pop up for sale. Well
one did on this list and I bought it.
So, we're now a 3 Clem household. I'll move everything over from my H over
to the L.
Now the question is what to do with the H. I have an attachment to it, but
it seems a little silly to have 2 Clems in the same color.
I'm thinking of putting big knobbies on it and tossing around the idea of
putting on bars other than sweptback bars. Maybe wide drop bars with a
short extension stem, maybe bullmoose or Wavie bars when they're available.

Anyone else have 2 Clems setup differently? Or I guess noticed any
difference in ride quality from H to L?
Suggestions on building up my H as a mountain bike?
David

Re: [RBW] Re: The ups and downs of my Clem Smith Jr

2018-09-06 Thread Jim Bronson
Jeffrey,

A list member was very kind to sell me his set of 8 speed indexed SunRace
thumbies for a very reasonable price. So it will be staying 8 for now. I
don't really feel the need for more gears on this bike as others. I like
to have a lot of gears on my brevet Rivendell so I can match effort to
desired pace as closely as possible, but on the Clem, well, I'll get there
when I get there.

In case you were curious though, the standard derailer on the Clem
completes is Grant's favorite derailer, the big-jockey-wheel Altus M310.

2018-09-06 Thread Jim Bronson
That is so true Joe! You don't get the clackety-clack when you are a
little off like you did in the days of old. Back when I was rocking my
Schwinn Collegiate, there was no question if the gear lever needed a little
more trim or not. The feedback was highly audible. Surely I don't hear as
well now as I did when I was 12 or 13, but I'm not so deaf as to miss some
clacking from the back of the bike.

No the failure mode with modern friction shifting when the lever's not
trimmed right is your chain jumping all over the place. At least it is in
my case. Maybe we just need a cassette with straight cut teeth like the
old ones. The new cassettes have all sorts of CAD created funny shapes and
angles to aid in index shifting.

Hey Jim -- I don't know what RD came with the Clem but I can't imagine why
