Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders wear for wind-stopping hats for helmet-less winter riding?

2018-11-25 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
My cold weather head protection does not appear to have been mentioned yet.
I tape-cover the holes of my helmet. This can be varied for different
temperature regimes by taping just some of the holes. For instance I
currently have just the top two lines of holes taped over, with the side
holes still open for ventilation. This works well for temperatures from
35-50F. As we head into December I will cover all holes. For rides below
25F or so I add a headband, a thin wool hat underneath, or thin balaclava.
For my ears, I use earbags.

Joe, a mirror and winter tape make my helmet essential riding gear which I
think is never a bad thing, Ramey in GJT

Just to follow up on this thread, I picked up the Sunrace 11-40 8 speed

shifts OK, but is a bit slow and noisy. I haven't tried it on the trail

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders wear for wind-stopping hats for helmet-less winter riding?

2018-11-25 Thread The Snag
Thanks for the tip Karl! Those look nice but currently no ear flaps in
stock. I'm pretty close to Portland so I'll have to check out Rivelo
sometime soon. RandiJo is also localish and
they just released their new line of caps
: waxed canvas, wool, ear
flaps and not. They look great and I just ordered two, stoked to support
small-scale craftsmen/women making quality goods.

Patrick, on the Oregon coast our precipitation generally does not freeze
and so I am concerned with keeping it out (I know, wool is wicking...until
it's soaked). I do see your point, I have a waxed canvas Filson hat that
can become a moisture trap on hot days, but our hot days are limited and
the RandiJo caps have a lining that I imagine will be effective at limiting
bogginess.

Haakon, stoked on the coast.

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding

2018-11-25 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Lyle, Wow. 48x18 is impressive for trail riding! I ride up in my either a 44x21
57” gear (Quickbeam) or 34x22 47” (Hunqabeam). Coming down, I’m in “high” gear
generally, 71” 61” respectively), but on snowy trails or bikepacking I stay in
low for the extra torque backpedaling. My bikepack gear for trail riding
(Hunqabeam) is 34x22, 42”.

Mark, 28x18 is quite low gearing, and is roughly my lowest gear for trails when
bikepacking. Rather than going up incramentally, what if you jumped to a 60ish”
(2+” tires) or 70” (38mm or so tires) gear and see what that is like to ride,
so you learn the other end of the spectrum. I think you’ll be plesently
surprised how much you can ride with a bigger gear, then you may end up
splitting the difference around 50-55” for dedicated trail riding.

Patrick

Patrick and others - thanks for the very thorough answer to my question
about pedal retention. I tend to ride with the middle of my foot on the
pedal so no clips or straps have ever worked well for me... And I haven't
missed them. I do like the heavily spiked VP platforms on all my bikes
though. I'm glad to hear that it may not be required for safe fixed riding.

I'm going to throw a set of VP's and a new chain on my ANT and try fixed
this week... I'm looking forward to it, thanks again for the info and
inspiration!

[RBW] Re: WTS - Acorn, Baggins, Ostrich, Walnut, Surly bags | Surly, Carradice racks | Trangia kit | Nitto RM013 Dirt Drops

Both Acorn bags, the Baggins bag, and the Carradice rack have been claimed
and/or pending payment.

I have to add another item in that I forgot:

*Nitto MT Campee rear rack - $85* - I believe this is the model meant for
26" wheeled bikes, though it fits just fine on my 700x42c'ed All City Space
Horse Disc. I have some cut down but long top struts for it but I'm missing
the mid-struts that came with it that had ends that are meant to mount on
canti-bolts - I think I gave them away to someone on this list. I added
pictures to the album of this rack.

Riding without retention, but with spiked platform pedals sacrifices highspeed
spinning and low speed climbing some, but if your focus is trails, the ease of
on/off may well be worth it. On trails, this generally means only losing a
small amount of steeper hill climbing.

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding

2018-11-25 Thread Patrick Moore
48X18 is a good pavement ratio; mine are 70, 69, and 76 gi. For off
pavement, I find low 60s best for a single gear for my terrain which
involves sand and mostly rolling terrain (Rio Rancho) with only short steep
sections. I'd rather walk more on hills than spin futilely on flats.

If I were to build a ss mountain bike again, I'd probably consider 2
ratios, a road ratio and a technical singletrack ratio. Or just use
multiple gears. Wait! I just did that!

Seriously, I went back to multiple gears with my Fargo for dirt road and
off road use, my first bike with multiple gears in 10 years or so, and
continue the trend with the replacement Matthews. But just the other day I
was thinking about an off road single speed ...

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding

2018-11-25 Thread Lyle Bogart
Kevin Mulcahy--yup, 48x18 seems a bit stout, but it's different on a fixie
;-) The same gear on a multispeed bike does seem harder. Maybe it's because
the fixie is so much lighter and maybe it's because of the rotational
inertia caused by the direct linkage of the drive train that seems to help
in climbing and forward progression generally. For some of the more
technical tracks I've got my eye on for this winter and spring, I may drop
down to a 44 on the front.

Cheers!

The photo of the baggins bag with the baggins patch on it is just with the
leather patch resting on top of the tinkers patch. The bag didn't come with
any straps to attach to the bike per my recollection, but I can include
some natural color leather straps - if I have any straps that match the
leather on the bag I'll include them, but I think I only have the natural
straps in surplus.
