[RBW] Afternoon ride from home into the mountains and back on my Sam

2019-01-10 Thread Pancake

Great riding after the rain in the west Napa hills on a used but new-to-me Sam
Hillborne I got from Riv a couple weeks ago. Switched on Albatross bars,
Compass Snoqualmie tires (great recommendation by a friend), and tuned up.
Still messing with the bar setup but it’s getting an alternate dropbar setup
next week.

Thanks for all the great ideas from this forum, this bike is just a blast to
ride (and fun to tinker on)!

2019-01-10 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Happy you scored multiple beams. Way to cover your bases, I searched for a
68cm Atlantis or 68cm Custom for 2-3 years. Ended up with 3 within a month.
Moved one back then; with another possibly on the move now that I added a 67cm
single top tube AHH.

[RBW] Re: Possible issue with Nitto Tallux stem and Nitto Albatross bars

2019-01-10 Thread Scott McLain
I put on an alba setup last year and had the same issue. I have an aluminum
Alba bar with a Tallux stem. I assumed that I let grease between the bar and
stem. So I cleaned it off and added a little blue lock-tight and I think I got
it!

I also used blue lock-tight to get my seatpost to stop letting my seat pop a
wheelie. It worked!

I just noticed the Blug states that the silver/blue Legolas is the
second-to-the-last and they have one more set of decals left. Someone
still has a chance to get the very last Legolas!

I think it also has to do with manufacturing. The Legolas is made by Mark

It's not so much the line breaking mid-hill. It is the lack of being able to
repair a misshap while on tour. A line could get cut or broken for a number of
different reasons and likeky never when actually being ridden. A new line and
the right oil woukd be hard to find most places and bleeding the system
requires a fair amount of specialist equipment.

A bike tourist who came through town was riding his, heading for the west

2019-01-10 Thread Ian A
When I was cycle touring in Colombia, I met a Belgian couple with Magura
hydraulic V brakes on their bikes. I questioned the husband about the logic of
hydraulics on V brakes and he claimed they were superb. Easy to modulate, very
sure and required little to know hand strength to brake violently when needed.
I asked him if he wasn't concerned about somehow cutting or braking a hydraulic
line and he felt the risk was really low. He'd been using them for years and
also had hydraulic discs on their mountain bikes.

Wouldn't be my choice, but apprently Magura brakes are expensive and excellent.

2019-01-10 Thread Philip Williamson
That's a shame about the "only one Legolas left," unless you already own
one. They are one of the most beautiful Rivendell bikes, in my opinion.
Delicate and strong looking.

The idea that no more decals means no more Legoals makes me wonder if
Rivendell changes model names when they run out of decals.
"Well, we're out of Quickbeam decals, let's call the bike something else
now."
"We've only got 40 Rivendell decals left, let's stop promoting the
customs."
"Ah man, we've still got boxes and boxes of Atlantis decals. Let's paint
the new bike teal and call it an Atlantis."

Hello RBW-OBers,
I took the chainring listing off my webshop without accounting for time
zone differences so a little earlier than expected, and had a couple people
looking to get in last minute orders.
I put the listings back up in my webshop - I will remove at 4pm CST today.
They are on eBay now, at higher prices:

If you ask nicely moving forward I could probably send a Paypal invoice at
the prices listed below, but I won't be advertising them here moving

pics above.

[RBW] Re: Recommend a Non leather saddlebag straps

2019-01-10 Thread Tom Wyland
I ordered a bunch of straps from this site years
ago: https://www.strapworks.com/default.asp Just get the width correct.
They have buckles galore, just be aware which ones are fixed and which are
sewn on.

Note that the thickness of the straps varies. Nylon straps are what I think
of as "dog leash weight." Polypro straps are thinner and lighter like a 1"
belt that may come with a pair of nylon shorts. I hope that helps.

[RBW] WTB 56cm Bombadil

2019-01-10 Thread jamison brosseau
I had really good luck in my search for a 60cm Quickbeam, so lucky in fact that
I ended up with a 60 and a 62. Gonna ride them both over the winter and see
which I prefer.
Anyhow I would really like to find a 56cm Bombadil as a complete or frame set.
If you have one and you are thinking of parting with I would love to know about
it.
Thanks
Jamison

Re: [RBW] How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-10 Thread Lester Lammers
I have a C19 carved on my 53 MIT Atlantis and love it. I had a Berthoud
Aspin with the cutout on it but the C19 is much better on this frame for
me. Bike Tires Direct has the C19 with cutout for $87.50 and free shipping.
Riv does not carry it.

[RBW] Silver Legolas on the blug

2019-01-10 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wow. I don't really covet bicycles that I don't own (well maybe a little) and
I'm more of a Clementine guy these days, but I sure wouldn't kick that Legolas
out of my bike closet! Something about a bicycle with traditional sized tubing
and cantilever brakes and nice lugs. Plus that silver paint with gold lug
lining. And it's the penultimate Legolas, as decals are then gone.
