I personally do not miss the flare. They are really nice, simple bars that fit
my hands great. And the reach/position of the levers is just right

I usually put no more than 5kg of load in my saddlebag.
With my 54cm Hunq, the saddlebag would rub the tire if used without a rack,
so probably 90% of the weight is supported by the rack.
No problems so far.

[RBW] Re: Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread Bill Schairer
Friction for durability, flexibility and I know how to make them work. I never
could get the hang of servicing indexed and I had two brifters go bad but never
a bar end. Then, ‘will this work with that?” is really never an issue - swap
wheels, cassettes, freewheels, chainrings etc with hardly a thought. I’ve
heard plenty of noisy indexed drive trains and missed shifts.

[RBW] Re: Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread Pancake
+2 for both indexed and friction.

I have Microshift shifters on my Sam, they're friction on the front,
switchable to friction or indexed on the rear. Strongly recommended.

They call these "friction transferable" meaning you can switch between the
modes. It requires an allen key, super easy even on the road. My chain
broke a few weeks ago, had to reassemble it with about 8 missing links
which screwed up indexing. Quick switch to friction mode got me home
happily.

[RBW] RTP-like econo options: opinions wanted

2019-04-09 Thread in Dallas nick
I have the Power Blocks, the Maxxis

'Drop the Hammer' DTHs and also the standard RTPs.

The standard RTPs are right at 450g.

The Power Blocks and DTHs are about 100 g's heavier at about 550 each.

For my mainly street riding I think the the

PBs and DTHs are a tie.

I too prefer the tread on the DTHs over the PB's.

Not sure why , they both seem to roll about the same to me.

Both are folding tires and mounted easily for me.

My DTHs are the black sidewall and I  don't particularly care for the bold
yellow lettering on the side but they roll very well for me and very few flats
if any on them and since I have multiple 26'ers I can't justify running RTPs on
all.

The RTPs are definitely in a different and higher category.

Why get an e-bike when you can get Rene Herse tires for much less, well a
little less.

Ha! Just kidding.

I think I'd still be slow on an e-bike.

I would be interested in hearing of other 26 tires that are in or below that
550g weight class.

Gosh, I sure use 'about' a lot, but I'm not about to change as it requires
being more specific.

I am about to sign off here though.

Paul in Dallas

PS,

Not 26" but I installed a pair of 700x42 Soma Vitesse  XL

a few days ago on my Schwinn  Passage.

Found them pretty cheap on Ebay.

They roll super fine, seem quick.

385g  each. Dang their sidewalls are thin.

Will be interesting to see how they hold up.

I need to check Soma for 26" offerings.

That's about it.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

2019-04-09 Thread oldmangabe
I've been riding a Galibier for about two years on my randonneur bike. It
took me (170lbs) quite a while to break it in. I almost gave up and swapped
it back for the Aspin, but a combo of rainy and sweaty rides finally did
the trick.

For me the S/G works best with bars below saddle, while the Aspin works
slightly below, at, and above saddle heights.

I like both models equally. I decided to try switching to the Galibier
because the bars on my rando are 2-3 inches below my saddle and I've come
to appreciate less pressure on the backs of my thighs on rides over 200k.
It feels similar to using a Flite or a Fabric Scoop saddle. Though the
Aspin is a great all around saddle for me as well. YMMV

Re: [RBW] Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread jack loudon
I agree with Patrick, and for pretty much the same reasons. My 1x10 has a
friction thumby and the 2x9 has friction bar-ends, and I have no desire to
go back to indexing. The lateral play in the derailleur jockey wheel makes
the chain self-align with the cog to a certain extent, so missed shifts are
rare. Though I wouldn't like friction so much if I couldn't keep both
hands on the bars while shifting, so friction on downtube shifters seems
borderline dangerous to me (although that's all we used BITD).

[RBW] Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread Joe Bernard
I change my mind on this every 3 months, so good luck with my advice!

I was back to index (rear), then got a new Atlantis with 9-speed Shimano
bar-ends and XT derailer that just doesn't want to index cleanly. I did a bar
swap last week and the only thing I had around was a vintage 7-speed Suntour
thumby, so I mounted it and put in friction. Perfect! For street riding* it's
actually easier to guess the travel and snick into the next cog without pushing
through a click and hoping the chain doesn't rattle. Ask me again in 3 months!

*Does not apply on singletrack. You need index for that.

Re: [RBW] Re: Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread Patrick Moore
You are right, indexing might well be a better choice for rapidly changing
terrain and conditions. My technique with friction in "emergency"
situations -- deep sand patch, for example -- is to slam the right lever to
the large cog (or at least to a bigger cogs several positions away) in
order to maintain momentum, since this reduces the need to fine-tune the
chain, and once stabilized, adjust the gear as needed. But if I were riding
technical singletrack with a lot of this sort of shifting, I'd probably
want indexing too. *And* indexing is a lot more precise and reliable now
than in the 7 speed days; I could never get the chain to track perfectly
smoothly on all 7 cogs either with XT thumbshifters or Dura Ace dt shifters.

I'm very similar. I have a 68.5 saddle height and 69.5 PBH. The 54 AHH is
at the tall end of my spectrum--I think my custom ended up being 52.5. My
inseam is 30 inches and the standover height with 38 mm Soma Xpress is
about 30 inches. The new 54.5 AHH might be too big for me. The 51 should
be fine for me, since it has a slightly more upward sloping top tube.

I have both friction and index. I've personally found friction to be great
for more gradually changing terrain that gives you some time to fine tune
the paddle placement before really cranking down on the pedals without
fully losing your momentum. However, when I am dealing with highly varied
terrain that changes very quickly (i.e. singletrack and poorly maintained
forest service roads), I've found that I am not good enough with friction
to get the shifts just right without the rear derailleur not being in the
right position and the chain consequently jumping around when I apply the
torque (or break, which only happened once!). As such, for my 2x9 speed
Clem I've moved to indexing in the rear as I've been on the trails more and
more. However, If I were to mostly stay on the road, I'd keep with friction
both front and rear.

Hopefully my anecdote helps, and good luck with the build!

After riding with STI brifters for many years, I thought that friction
would suck, but it is smooth and I don't miss my STI shifters a bit.

You can get Shimano levers with indexed and friction modes and you can
decide if you like friction or not. When indexed works, it is great, and
there is no reason to use friction, but if it doesn't work, then it sucks
and I hate to mess with quarter turns of the cable to shift properly etc.
and would rather avoid the hassle and just use friction.

8-speed derailleur with 5-speed shifters (741x, Bar Cons -- relevant
because modern shifting systems require more pull to move between cogs,
allowing a certain greater precision) over 10 (mismatched) cogs is quite
easy with practice; in fact, when I do mis-shift, it's not because the
system isn't precise enough, it's because I shift too gingerly and end up
not pulling *enough* cable.

2. It's simple and requires almost no maintenance. I hate fiddling with
indexing; learned that hate back in the 7-speed XT days.

3. It allows you to mix and match.

4. It discourages unnecessary shifting. I *like* having to ride at a wide
variety of cadences and torque levels. That said, I also hate large
mid-range jumps; "large" means more than 1-tooth differences. Inconsistent,
but still true.

[RBW] Re: Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread Daniel D.
Indexing in rear, friction in front. I like the convenience of indexing.
But not really needed in front and you can easily trim the front derailleur.

Re: [RBW] Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-09 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have and enjoy both. Friction is more “classic,” and requires a bit of
finesse and thinking … something like shooting a manual camera. Indexing is
easier to shift (think of an automatic point-and-shoot camera). Some prefer the
added control.

Theoretically, indexed shift levers are more likely to fail, due to the small
parts inside. In practice, I’ve never had a pair of indexed levers malfunction.

One plus for indexed shifting is that when you’re tired, or are struggling
uphill and trying to find a lower gear, it’s nice to just move the lever and
wait for the click.

Yes it works great. I had one on my old Sam.

If you need it to support more weight, then a longer strut to the dropouts

I never probably never had more than 10 - 15 pounds, so not a lot of

[RBW] Berthoud Saddles

2019-04-09 Thread David Wadstrup
I really like Berthoud saddles. The Mente to me is the best saddle for
very upright riding positions. Mainly because I don't have to ride with
the nose super high like I do with the Brooks. I also like the Aspin for
bikes with drop bars. I've been wondering, though, what the
Soulor/Galibier is like. It's a narrower, racier saddle. Does anyone here
have any experience with this saddle? Is it too narrow? Noticeably less
comfortable than the Aspin?

Hi John,
I was looking through this thread with interest and don’t intend to speak for
Tom but as an owner of a pair of the exact same model of repurposed military
surplus bags I thought I’d try to help answer your question. They are from
Jeff Potter of OYB(Out Your Backdoor) and were made from Swiss medic bags. I
use them often and they are perfect for small loads... a dozen eggs just barely
fit in the bottom with a little effort for example, I’ve fit two dozen in
cardboard cases though fit was a little too tight. One currently holds a
roll-up, diaper bag/changing pad when riding with my son. Jeff offered them
with varying sized rack clips made to order so maybe Tom could verify rack
compatibility but mine fit great as low riders on a Surly Front rack
