Re: [RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-25 Thread Sean on Bike
Honestly, if my bike gets stolen then it’s opportunity for an upgrade...

But when in questionable areas, I use the Sheldon Brown method that locks the
back wheel to a post with a (Kryptonite) mini U lock.
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html That’s usually all I travel
with.

This saves both the rear wheel and frame with just one mini U. If desired, he
front wheel is lassoed with a cable to the U lock. It’s worked for many years
on my bikes. Not no need to upgrade quite yet!

Ah I see that now. Shoulda read the whole thing. I have an analog stem that I

That particular bike (the owners bike, that has a few other "custom"

I wonder if these are done in conjunction with Analog based on the (W)right
stems? I think they were the re-instigiators of the minimal offset stems.

Didn't Grant once say that the fillet brazed version of Gus was going to be

were fillet brazed, and then Gus stays around as a longer-running,
production, tig-version. That's total speculation though.

I sure wish some of you in the Bay area who have the opportunity to see and

Regarding the namesIn general , I find the gendered names of the frames
a little annoying. I always cringed that the earlier mixte was the Betty.
Applying masculine names to the other "normal" bikes is equally
problematic.
I love the names Atlantis, Saluki, Cheviot, Hunqapillar, etc. Love the
name Appaloosa, I would be happier without the Joe in front. Same goes for
the Sam.
I think Clementine is an awesome name and I wish both the L and H were

cannot fit anything wider than 54mm according to their specs. I wanted to
make a canti RTP bike, but with fenders these cantis would not work either.

[RBW] Atlantis evolution: Deja vu all over again

2019-04-25 Thread tc
I read a 2-page excerpt from RR #21 (thanks to Jim!) with title "Atlantis
Review & Update", and was struck by the similarities between the move from
the All Rounder to the Toyo Atlantis, the move from Toyo to Waterford
Atlantis frames, and now the move from Waterford to Taiwan. Always finding
ways to make a bike better and less expensively ... and by all accounts
succeeding!

[RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-25 Thread masmojo
Ash, those are NOS & offered by someone with an inflated opinion of their
value; occasional searching will turn up more reasonably priced used sets.
Appearance wise they hold up well over time and any I buy, I am intent on
using, so NOS means nothing to me.

Of course they fall into that category of components that I should stop
extolling the virtue of, because it just drives up demand and prices!

Damned indeed.  That's some mighty serious money they're asking for
them.  They weren't just MTB: I had them on my Santana tandem, where
they worked just fine.  For that money, though, there's simply no way
I'd choose them over the Rene Herse cantilevers.

[RBW] Re: Mystery bike in April Blahg

2019-04-25 Thread masmojo
I have a Clementine & of any issues I might have with it, the name is not one
of them. But, then again the first bike I ever got new, was a Royce Union
3speed in a ladies step through! My friends made fun of me for a week or so,
but I could wup any of them on their Stingrays in a race, so that diffused a
lot of their comments.

To a Rivendell enthusiast the names are just what they are, but I did get a bit
of pause from the police officer when I told him the name of my stolen bike
was a Rosco Bubbe.

The average Joe is going to assume a girls name on a step through frame denotes
a ladies bike. When the giant Clem L's came out I sent a link to my very tall
friend; without even looking at the size he responded that his wife didn't need
a new bike!

Preconceptions are hard to undermine.

Of course you can wish and let it be known !

I really LOVE bikes that have distinctive color. When the 64 Clem-L came
out (it's hard to even say that silly name, it's like naming your daughter
Pete-L !) when I saw it was colored Grilver my heart sank to the
floor. It was like offering the Coookie Monster a box of plain ol'
crackers . Not num num ! The heart wants what the heart wants and and
all "reasoning" is powerless in It's Presence .

Of course it coulda been repainted Orange or whatever and renamed
Clementine but at a considerable extra expense with shipping. Nah !

I was greatly tempted to buy one of the last remaining decal-less green 65cm

too indulgent and I just couldn’t (and still can’t) justify the expense for a

Aye, Garth. None of my lassies or wife wants a Clem L, but they all want a

The general idea is that this is referring to a male and female version of
the Hilly Bike, like the Betty/Gomez and Clem/Clementine-His/Ladies. Yes,
the other frame likely the Anniversary one.

My own comment about the male/female names It's a darn shame Riv caved
in for whatever reason and changed Clementine to Clem-L. Clementine was and
is the best name ever for that bike. Oh m' darlin' Clementine where
art thou m' darlin' Clementine ? !There's no polite way to say
it.Clem-L just plain sucks ! Ahahahahaaha !
