I'm basically talking to myself here at this point, but I bought it from
the seller's website.

Sale price was $50.00 cheaper, shipping was $40.00 cheaper, and I got a
$20.00 off coupon for signing up.

So yeah, two cents shy of $930.00 delivered.

Well, no worries about the handlebars dinging your top tube(s). Jim, what's
the story with the shifters perched way on up top of the brake hoods? Have
you set up other bikes like this? Are they modified Kelly Take-offs? Is
this a thing that passed by my notice and I'm the only one in the dark
here? I don't think I would worry so much about the aesthetics of the stem,
since those thumbies tend to draw the eye. I'm trying to imagine how I
would shift, for instance, the left one in the position it's in now. I
gather the idea is to not move off the hoods, similar to Ergo/STI? I like
the purple accents.

I didn't see any rattles, so perhaps rat snake as you say. Heck, I've not
have been as retiring hand I known that. But long and fat!

For the next couple of miles I started at each fallen branch in the road.

This reminds me (onlookers rushing for cover) of finding a spitting cobra
in our woodpile and calling the snake park to come and catch it -- young
Brit on crutches with graspy stick.

On another occasion, evening, the dogs were frantic and we went outside to
see a fat, green pit viper (?) crawling down the driveway. The askari
bludgeoned it to death with his knobkerrie and my brother, 11 or 12 at the
time, stuffed it, poorly because it started to stink.

Well, I don't have the expert feather in my cap either, but I dont think
that ones a rattler either. ONLY because we have tons of them out here in
Colorado, and I see them constantly. Eric is spot on, they are noticeably
fatter given their length. That said, we do get some big ones like that too
and they love to sun themselves on the hot trails and paths. FREAK me out
every single time.

Rattles are pretty obvious on a snake that big.

I'm gonna guess a rat snake, which has a triangular head but is not a

Not an expert, but I used to catch snakes (including rattlers) when I was a
kid. That there looks like your garden variety gopher snake. They often get
the business end of the shovel owing to the confusion. They are harmless to
man but helpful with rodent population control.

2019-05-17 Thread lconley
Once the handlebars are two inches above the seat, esthetics have kind of
gone out the window anyway.
I use Dirt Drop (10 cm - the 8 looks* too* funny with the different
diameters) and Lugged stems on most of my Rivendells. The Dirt Drop is
preferred on the commuters and off-roadish bikes because I am fat and it
gives me more clearance when I am straddling the top tube. All of my
threadless bikes use LD stems for the belly clearance also (except
Hubbuhubbuh). But the Guv'nor needs a traditional Technomic or lugged
style stem. Bottom line is the practical bikes get the Dirt Drop, the
stylish bikes get the traditional stem. If I only had one bike - it would
probably have a Dirt Drop. My custom will likely have a lugged, but the
long top tube will give me the belly clearance.

Laing described ways to avoid having bulky hardware inside the fender at the
places the fender attaches to the rear brake bridge and fork crown. In that
description, he repeatedly used the word "stays".

I think we're misunderstanding each other. I wasn't talking about clearance at
bridges. I was talking about fender stay hardware. I think 'fender stays' are
an actual thing. These are fender stays:

[Image result for honjo fender stays]

Fender stays attach to the fender at one end and near the rear drop out or fork
tip on the other end. The typical hardware that is used to attach fender stays
to the metal fender is one or two daruma bolts. The daruma bolts that come
with Honjo, Velo Orange, and Berthoud metal fenders have a fairly tall height
inside the fender. Depending on the vendor and the setup the internal daruma
hardware will be 4mm to 8mm tall, inside the fender. Often, when I correctly
install metal fenders with correct equal spacing to the tire all around, the
place most likely to rub the tire will be the fender stay hardware touching the
tire in this area. One could re-shape the fender to not have proper clearance
at the fender stays, but that can cause other problems: it looks bad, you have
more front TCO, and you increase the risk of sucking a stick into a big gap
that decreases as the wheel rolls. The "falsehood" I was spreading was just a
statement of fact: most metal fenders come with round fender stays. Most metal
fenders come with daruma bolts to attach the stays to the fender. Unmodified
daruma bolts intrude on the interior space of the fender at the fender stays.

Plastic fenders have a flat piece of metal pop-riveted to the fender,
protruding only 1mm or 2mm into the interior of the fender. This area is where
I think plastic fenders always have more clearance. If there is a good
solution for attaching fender stays to metal fenders with no interior hardware
I would be interested to learn about that hardware. I imagine I could design
and fashion a fender stay mounting object that replaces darumas that has this
feature, but if there is already a part or an established method to solve this
area, I'd be happy to learn about it.

Possibly the easiest method would be to run Berthoud brand fender stays. Those
are typically squished flat at the point that they attach to the metal fender
and drilled for bolts. Run a pan head inside the fender and a nut outside.
That solves the interior hardware problem, you just have to buy extra stays (or
always buy Berthoud fenders). It's only money.

Re: [RBW] PSA: Bikeinsights.com: great geometry resource

2019-05-17 Thread Eric Daume
I think the Riv lugs hide the extension better than the plain head tube of
something like the New Albion. Plus, the extension on a Riv is actually
functional, in that it lets you get the bars higher. On a threadless bike,
bar height is really dictated by the steerer length (carbon forks excepted)

This is a Rivendell trend too, starting with the Road Standard around 1996

more comfort. My earlier '95 Road does not have an extended HT (which is one

[RBW] Re: Aesthetics Issue

2019-05-17 Thread Ash
I like the looks of Technomic/Tallux stems, but never understood the point
of a tall stem with downward angle. If it had a 90 deg or slight upward
angle I wouldn't have to raise it so high. So, while the stem itself is
pretty, overall cockpit setup does not look all that great.

If there was a dirt drop (and in black) with 120mm reach I would gone with
that instead of Tallux.

[RBW] Vintage Mountain Bike site

2019-05-17 Thread tc
Wow, there are some nice bikes here:
http://www.vintagemtbworkshop.com/the-collection.html

Riv's take a couple of cues from the old Ritchey bikes in that they have a
point at the top of the seat tube (which I didn't know was a Ritchey
calling card), and of course a modified Bullmoose bar. And take a look at
that 1978 Breezer Series 1 - simply awesome!

It's also interesting that so many of these had negative-sloped top tubes...

I wish people would stop using "infamous" incorrectly. Or at least I hope
they are:

"*Boasting their infamous style, design and quality craftsmanship, this is
the epitome of bicycle culture."*

Designating a particular bicycle as the "epitome" of something as broad and
nebulous as "bicycle culture" also makes little sense. Nice color though.

1. disreputable, ill-famed, notorious. 2. disgraceful, scandalous; nefarious,
odious, wicked, shocking, vile, base, heinous, villainous.
