[RBW] FS: Brooks, Stems, shifters, wolftooth, cassette, rack etc

2019-06-16 Thread Drw
What’s left

Shimano bar end shifters- 10 speed, index rear, friction front. Very good
condition, some minor rubbing on the black part. I bought these off eBay listed
as dura ace, but I can’t see anything on them that says dura ace or the model
number-55$ shipped

-wolftooth tanpan- for mating 10 speed road shifters to a 10 speed mtn
derailler. under 75 miles- 35$ shipped

-Shimano stem shifter- one of the nicer ones I’ve seen. It indexes a 6 speed or
frictions more. Good shape- 15$ shipped

-nitto technomic stem- 25.4, 10cm extension(I think). I cut this down so that
the quill is the same length as a tallux. If you want a tallish stem but have a
short headtube and don’t want something insanely tall, this would be helpful.
-25$ shipped

-Nitto dirt drop stem. 8cm 26.0. Really Excellent condition. Just traded for
this but ended up not needing it. -40$

-tektro v brake levers- brand new- 12$ shipped

[RBW] Re: Gus pre-sale

2019-06-16 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
BBDD--No need to worry about me needing a bike SOON. Although I do not
currently own a Rivendell, I have an entire fleet of Rivalikes, including
my 1946 Bianchi 650B step through city bike, which does Clementine duty.
I'm okay with either of the current colors, but I favor the bronze green,
though the blue is reminiscent of the Blue Mink Raleigh Professional, which
I've always liked.

Ed & Patrick, thanks for the reviews, very helpful.

Garth, I mentioned first gen Clem because I remembered they changed the
wheels. Just checked and mine are the Alex 18, so a full 6mm narrower. I
run big rubber on narrow tires all the time, and I do have a set of Atlas
rims, which are slightly wider at 20, so I guess I would use those to
start. When/if I go to the full 2.8", I will probably build a second set
with wider rims.

One other little high class problem is size. With a 73cm saddle setting
most days, that's a height that appears in all 4 size ranges. Throwing out
the small and the x-large, that leaves Med and Lg. I know Grant would
suggest a Large, and I do like big frames just fine--no worries with this
design regarding top tube clearance. But I feel like the handling gets a
bit more staid, lines tend to lock in more, with the fatter 700c tires, so
I am leaning toward the 650B if only for that reason. I had a Jones SWB
complete for a bit and I liked the handling on that, road and trail. (Sold
it in anticipation of re-acquiring a Riv for the same riding duties. Not a
huge fan of discs and push button shifters. Bike was a lot of fun, though,
no question about that.)

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse rene crankset ultegra chains?

2019-06-16 Thread David Carner
Toby,
I installed a Rene Herse crankset (double 44/28) on my Riv Road about a
year ago. I don't think the pinned and ramped rings were available in that
size at the time, so I have the standard 5-10 model. Since I was staying
with 9 speed in the rear I used a new SRAM PC 971 that I already had on
hand. In the process of updating the drivetrain I installed a Shimano FX-70
FD from Rivbike. I was frustrated to find that I could not adjust the FD
to keep the chain from rubbing the cage on the inner rear cog. I checked
my chain line and it was within a mm. of perfect. Then I realized that the
CX70 FD is marketed as a 2 x 10. I bought an Ultegra 10 speed, CN-6701 and
that solved the problem. I use indexed rear, friction front and it would
seem difficult for either to shift more smoothly than they do now.

[RBW] Re: Latvia, Estonia, Finland bike trip suggestions?

2019-06-16 Thread Sean Kline

Hi Michael,

Your trip to Latvia, Estonia and Finland sounds great.

My wife and I took our Sam and Cheviot to Helsinki two summers ago to
attend the Flow Music Festival and then bike + ferry to Stockholm before
ferry-ing back to Helsinki. Our modest credit card cylcotour loop was
Helsinki, Degerby, Fiskers, Tammisaari, Teijo, Salo, Turku, Stockholm,
Helsinki. I'm happy to share our detailed itinerary. Salo was nothing
special, but the other towns were very cool.

Most of Finland is very flat and, for the most part, easy to bicycle. We
were a little disappointed it wasn't warmer (60s) and that it rained some,
but we had a fun time. Finland has a pretty short tourist season from the
beginning of June through mid-August. So, some things start to close or
slow down around August 16th. Most of the major & minor roads are tarmac,
however there are quite a few that are gravel, which were fine (fun!) for
our 38 and 42 CM tires. I recommend cycling the Archipelago if you can:

Two worthy bike shops in Helsinki:

   - Pelago bicycles: https://www.pelagobicycles.com/kauppa
   - Classic Bike; Mechelininkatu 15, 00100 Helsinki, Finland

[RBW] father's day bike

2019-06-16 Thread Will
It's Father's day. I gave my son (who is a father) an Appaloosa. No pics.
It's a standard Riv build. It needs fenders and will get P65s or B65s.

It is definitely a beast. We dialed it in for him this morning. He took it
out and said: "It's like riding on a cloud. It floats on the road".

It replaces his 1981 Trek 613, which was also nice: 531 lugged. But we're
talking almost 40 years old. The Appaloosa is nicer in every respect. Lug
work is beautiful.

Biggest surprise: the choco-moose bars. These are big, wide, bars.
Comfortable is an understatement. Second biggest surprise: huge tire
clearance. The bike will take 700x55s.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: MIT Atlantis 53cm

2019-06-16 Thread Lester Lammers
FWIW, I have a 53 MIT Atlantis. I'm 5' 71/2" 82 ish PBH 71 cm saddle height
110mm stem with Billie Bars. Riv recommended a 50 but I told Will that most
riding will be on the road and went 53. Glad I did. I can still use drops
with a short stem. Stand over is fine and the bike feels perfect. Running
42mm tires and could also use 47's.

[RBW] Re: Gus pre-sale

2019-06-16 Thread Garth

Mark, if your rims are Alex DM24's you're fine as they are 32mm outer/24mm
inner. The only other suitable rims I'm aware of are the Cliffhanger and
Ryde Andra 40 and Big Bull.
_

If I get a HillyBike I'd ride it as I ride my 60cm. Bombadil which is
mostly on road which ranges from smooth to patch paved asphalt over once
gravel roads. I ride 700x50 Big Bens this year and the ride is terrific on
the road and the occasional ATV paths I follow around. I wouldn't hesitate
to ride 60mm Big Apples or something like that with the HillyBike on road.
I wish there was a 60mm Big Ben. There's not a whole lotta such tires above
60mm at this time though. Just because a HillyBike can take 2.8" tires
doesn't mean it's a requirement of course, I'm sure a 60mm tire rides
great.

I get the HillyBike is being marketed as offroad but that's just marketing
as to market you gotta start somewhere. That doesn't mean it's limited to
that, or by it. It's a BIKE for goodness sake, and one rides a bike
wherever one rides it.
Hmmm ... I've heard this marketing before . oh yes ... *When the
Bombadi was introduced it was marketed as a Mountain Bike, over hill 'n
dale we go ! *The talk was the same, about chest thumping "stout tubes"
(hear the echo of Tarzan here) and how this assists carrying your
truckloads of bananas from Costa Rica. I never thought of it anything but a
Bicycle that I ride.

I'd kind of like both a 59 Susie and a 60 Gus frankly, at least to try.
Besides tubing, I don't know if the Susie is smaller scaled Gus in overall
dimensions or simply a shorter seat tube. Compared to a Clementine oh
ask a million people and you get a million different answers. I'd rather
have a 64 Clementine in dimensions(long F-C and tall HT) but with a 60cm
ST which his where the XL/60cm. HillyBike fits in as the front-center
is very long and front end very high, at least from the XL demo photos that
Riv had for sale. Plus 3 sets of bottle mounts is to me a basic
necessity,, Gus yay, Clementine nay. A Clementine complete is great if the
parts are what you really want, if not you end up spending much more later.
