Hi Deacon Patrick,

Which specific model of Hilltrek have you tried for your cycling activities?
Would you recommend their waterproof trousers (pants)?

[RBW] A Genuine Pretend Anniversary Mixte

2019-09-29 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
A Genuine Pretend Anniversary Mixte

Ever since the sketch and the mention of a 25th Rivendell Anniversary Mixte on
the Blahg, I have been waiting like a kid on Christmas. The bikes I love are
the mixtes/step-throughs and what an honor that a mixte was going to be the
bike representing Rivendell Bicycle Works on their 25th. Since then, I’ve
haunted the Blug and the Blahg, checking my traps for any hint of the rumored
mixte coming to life. The fancy lugs, the Rivendell decal, the wispy, light
ovalized tubes, the “One Bike To Rule Them All” decal I was jockeying to get
Rivendell to place in some secret spot on the frame...I can’t forget about it.

In a recent e-newlsetter, the AM was mentioned but then seemingly tabled. It’s
inconceivable to me that this project may not happen. The lugs have been
designed, and they look to have a hummingbird cut into the lugwork. And there’s
no bird I love better than a hummingbird.

I was discussing (despairing) online with friends from the List and one of them
said, “Why don’t you just get this in a custom? They might even make those lugs
for you.”

I am not a custom kind of gal. I love the stock Rivendells I have in my garage.
But if the only way I can get an Anniversary Mixte is to make it out of a
custom, well, there’s an idea.

A Genuine Pretend Anniversary Mixte.

Grant is 65. The Gallup bike and the Longbolts bike are ahead of the AM in the
queue. The lug maker is going out of business. It could be a very long time
before the AM is in production. If ever.

I can’t be the only one whose heart was set on having this bike. Would anyone
else want a Genuine Pretend Anniversary Mixte? Would it be over the top if I
ordered it as a custom? Would anyone else do the same? Would we have a batch of
them ordered? And if so, can I choose the color? RICH RED WITH SPARKLES AND
CREAM ACCENTS. Jewel-toned, like a hummingbird.

This might be impossible. Too expensive, maybe Rivendell won’t agree to it,
maybe it’s a bad idea - but I’d at least like to explore it. Reply if you have
thoughts about it. This is fun, even if it turns out to be a pipe dream.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires for Clementine

2019-09-29 Thread franklyn
It seems that a plush ride is of value here. One trick that I use and one that
has been mentioned on this list before is to put tubeless sealant in the tubes.
This way you can enjoy the supple Compass/RH tires while not worry about flats:
have the cake and eat it also.

2019-09-29 Thread Julian Westerhout
Update:

The 2nd Gen Candybar is sold pending payment.

I'm told that the big saddle bag is likely a Hoss (two boxed 26" tubes fit
in each of the side pockets, and the bottom measures ~ 13.5" x 11",

And the medium saddlebag is likely a Little Joe.

Yo Jake, I'm running RTP's. What are they, 2.3's? And there's still plenty
of room. Using VO 60mm fenders and they are about even with the edges of
the RTP's. I was running 650x42 Hetres and Gravel Kings but wanted to try a
fatter tire. First experiment was with 47mm Switchback Hills. They fit but
there was about 2-3 mm distance from the top of the tire to the seat stay
bridge. Deal breaker. Arizona monsoons are no fun without fenders. It's too
bad RTP's and Natchez Pass tires are the only good ones offered in 559. If
Jan ever decides to discontinue tires in this size we're screwed. See what
happens when you get spoiled.

[RBW] FS: Assorted Rivendell Baggins Bags, plus Acorn handlebar bag and Velo-Orange seat bag

2019-09-29 Thread Julian Westerhout

FS: Assorted Rivendell Baggins Bags, plus Acorn handlebar bag and
Velo-Orange seat bag

My good friend Mike (whose 66 cm Rambouillet I recently posted and sold to
a Riv lister) has also been a bit of a bag hoarder (as I am, too!) over the
years. He still rides, but not as much, and is in the process of
“de-accessioning” — he now has 2 bikes and is keeping a few bags, but has
decided that these should go be enjoyed by others instead of sitting in a
closet. As he’s not list-active I’ve volunteered to find them new homes.

I’ve described them as best as I can — I’m not positive I’ve got the
Baggins model names correct — Mike doesn’t remember them, and my own memory
is fuzzy, too — so if it appears I’ve misidentified any, please let me know.

All prices do not include shipping. Will charge actual shipping cost.

Rivendell Baggins Hoss? Saddlebag —this is a large saddlebag in good used
condition — some patina, but lots of life left. $125

Rvendell Baggins medium saddlebag — not sure of the name. Well used, with a
lovely patina, and some dirt on the bottom, but in good functional shape
(and I love the leather’s look on this one!) $75

Rivendell Baggins Candybar bag 1st generation — this and the medium Baggins
saddlebag are probably the most used ones, but still with lots of life left
— see photos. $35

Rivendell Baggins Candybar bag 2nd generation — a bit wider and shorter
than the 1st generation bag, this one is essentially new, with little to no
use. $60

Rivendell Baggins Pa Cartright panniers with Arkel mounts — He added Arkel
mounts on a plate to these to make them easy to attach securely and remove
quickly, but the mounts are attached through the Baggins grommets, so can
be removed with no trace if desired. I think these originally had an over
the rack flap — that’s gone missing. A bit discolored, but clean and in
good condition. $175

Acorn medium handlebar bag - brown, excellent condition, with little use.
This is designed to strap on the handlebars with cords to the brake levers.
$80

Velo Orange seat bag (copy of Berthoud, IMHO) with Klik Fix saddle rail
mount. Back, fairly lightly used, with a bit of dirt. $50

prices.

Re: [RBW] Smaller tires on Cliffhanger rims? Snoqualmie (44mm) or small as 38mm? Sam Hillborne 700c

2019-09-29 Thread Pancake
Good tips John, thanks. I am leaning toward hand built wheelset, but now
that I've seen these Velo Orange Voyager
rims I'd a good reason to
get anything different.

Their size (38-60mm tires) is right between Velocity's Atlas (isn't
tubeless compatible/ready, tires 25-45mm) and Cliffhanger (tubeless ready,
tires 45-65mm) at a similar/lower price and similar/lower weight. And they
are silver vs. the black Cliffhanger (though the polished version is nice,
it's quite a bit more expensive and not well stocked).

I think you convinced me that Sapim spokes are worth considering, though
I've had great luck so far with 4 wheels built with DT Swiss 14/15/14
double butted spokes (2.0-1.8-2.0mm). Rich Lesnik seems to use the DT
double butted spokes and he sure knows what he's doing. I'll look at the
Sapims again, though 2.3-2.0mm is super beefy for what I'm after. Good
"Choosing Spokes Advice" link.

I forgot about the Rene/Panaracer sealant
, seems like a good match
with the Rene/Panaracer tires. I noticed that Orange sealant seeps a bit of
orange residue on tan sidewall tires and I'd rather avoid that if the
performance of the sealants is about the same.

I'm guessing that the tubeless stems are all about the same, just need the
right length for the rim size, right?

[RBW] Re: Bike with Riv-like geometry for kids - gravel

2019-09-29 Thread Ed Carolipio
For brand new, another vote for a Brooklyn. I got a Clem L for the wife but
it was still too big for her, so I got her the Willow 3 instead. Geometry
and ride are very Riv like, though not as "sharp" so I replaced some parts
to tighten up the ride. Frame's not bad though to build on, and they're one
of the few manufacturers of city bikes who use cromoly, at least in the
Willow. (Careful with those entry level bikes as "steel" is not synonymous
with cromoly.)

Still, if she fits a Riv, I'm with Joe and check out the used market. It
may seem pricey but depreciation on a well kept step thru is not bad and
I'm sure the net "loss" of owning it would be worth the expense. Also, step
thrus have a wide PBH range for fit: that 50cm Cheviot in theory could
tolerate her growing another 5" or so.

Sorry to here about your predicament. I also have an Appaloosa and just got a

I sold all possible bikes, frames, etc...prior to the Clem arrival to free up

Let’s do something to keep Clem with you. Petition? 100 posts to this thread?
What’s gonna win the day?

[RBW] Re: Clem L 64cm Size Range

2019-09-29 Thread Garth

Dave, I had ordered a 64 on Friday but called later in the day and
changed it to a 59. I'm 6'3', 92cm pbh . I have a 60cm. Bombadil which
fits me perfect. Out riding the other day it occurred to me that with a
4cm. taller seat tube , my thighs could rub on the seatstays. If the 64
Clem had the socket type seat lug it would have been alright as it places
the stays well rear of the seat lug, but it uses a lug that places it
forward, just like the Bombadil. My saddle is always as far back as
possible. This is just my thing, I prefer no rubbing of thighs on
anything. I was already 50/50 between the 2 sizes but the thigh thing gave
me a clear choice.

One thing that hasn't been spoken of about the new Clems in how much
longer they are in top tube and front-center, about 4 cm. Plus the head
tube angles are 69.5. I had asked Will for the dimensions. The *59 and 64
Clems are now 68.5/70 TT and 75/76 FC*. Even I wondered if the 64 would
be so high-front that I'd have use a -73d stem, which I really dislike. My
Alba bars are already high enough and I use a 90's Zoom 0d 130mm stem.
With the 59 Clem I may try Billie bars and the Hi-Riser stem. These are 2
inches more swept back than the Albas which with the extra TT length may be
about the same reach as my Bomba with Albas. No Bosco, too little usable
had space.

What you may prefer could be entirely different , maybe you like
oversized bikes, maybe not. Gotta know your self !

[RBW] Re: Offroad Mountain Clem-L’s

2019-09-29 Thread jeff perry
Hi all. New member here. I thought I'd share my thoughts on a 64cm Clem L
that I got last night. I also have a 62cm Appaloosa. The Clem L is a
trip! The frame flexes noticeably compared to the Appaloosa (which I
suppose some might view as a negative), but it's just *crazy* how smooth
the ride is over bumps. Seriously, small to medium sized bumps just don't
exist anymore. No hyperbole here, it makes the Appaloosa feel harsh in
comparison, and that bike is like a sofa compared to most bikes. I took it
for a ride last night over a trail that has a lot of raised tree roots and
bumps, and the bike just cruised over stuff that would have beat me up on
the Appaloosa. It's like riding a steam roller! It has to be due to frame
flex (and maybe the longer wheelbase) because I'm running equivalent tires,
bars and saddles on both bikes. Yet despite all the gooshiness, it seems
to accelerate at least as well as the Appaloosa, although I'll put that to
the test this weekend. Amazing. It's just a blast to ride...pure fun!

For touring or longer distance road riding, the Appaloosa would be my first
choice and I'm not going to give it up, but for blasting around for fun,
the Clem L is fantastic and I'm glad I got it. My only regret is getting
green instead of blue!

I was able to fit 2.6 Maxxis Ikons on my 59cm H frame. Plenty of clearance

My girlfriend also has an older 52cm H frame with the swoopy seat stays.
She is running 2.35 G-One Speeds on her bike with fenders, plenty of room

Schwalbe touring tires can last quite a while and typically measured in
distance. Reports I’ve seen vary between 6-10k miles, depending on terrain,
weight, etc.

I’ve used Big Apples. Very plush. I did have a staple go right through one
time. If I had been on my Marathon Plus, I’d have just kept going. If you
prioritize flat proof over everything else, I’d highly recommend the Marathon
