Do the platform mounting points align with that of a marks rack? Meaning could
I use a Marks rack platform.

Without the little leg extenders from the dropout mounting point, is the rack
definitely too short? I know this will vary for wheel size, but generally, are
the non extended legs not long enough?

[RBW] Re: Law professor, Riv Rider

2019-12-09 Thread Joe Bernard
My impression/memory of riding the demo Susie is the orange was ever so
slightly darker, a little more rust in it. Which looks spectacular, I think
you'll love it.

"Without more discussions and debates among common people I do not see how this
deep polarization and escalating mutual hatred can end."

I tried to address this in an earlier post but it came out - not like I'd hoped
- so I deleted (it's still in the emails version of this group): Studies (or at
least one I know I read) show that people who have friends on the opposite end
of the ideological spectrum tend to soften the most extremist edges of there
points of view.

I've found this to be true in my own experience of being pretty tight with a
few conservatives. For instance 10 years ago I was probably quite absolute
about 2nd Amendment stuff and just wanted them all confiscated, melted, get em
outta here. Now I'm more tolerant of the "for protection and hunting" POV,
although my friends and I probably still differ on how much regulation is
acceptable.

I've seen this mellowing on their end, too. It's a product of actually knowing
a real live person you disagree with instead of carrying a caricature of "those
libs" or "those cons". You are forced to understand why this person you respect
and care for comes to their views and sometimes that light goes off, "Right. I
haven't reached that conclusion, but I see how they did." It's a better way to
live than this virulent polarized morass the country seems to be in right now.

IN MY OPINION.

[RBW] Re: Law professor, Riv Rider

2019-12-09 Thread Ash
Over the weekend I ordered a Susie in orange. Looking at this picture I
hope that it is going to be the same shade of orange!

PS: This has been a good thread, IMO. During the rides or when I hangout
with bicycle people, we talk other things beside bikes. To me it is better
that way. We have folks disagree big time not just on the political front
but also on types of bikes, dietary preferences, rice vs wheat, Mac vs
Windows, iPhone vs Android, Pit bulls are good dogs/bad dogs, some love
NFL, some want it banned..

Mostly we annoy each other. We also occasionally learn new things from
such chats and broaden our perspectives I feel. Without more discussions
and debates among common people I do not see how this deep polarization and
escalating mutual hatred can end.

2019-12-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
Related to this topic: I just went to check inventory on rivbike.com for
the basket rack. The way you 'check inventory' is try to add 100 of them
to your cart, and the site will tell you how many you can add. I tried to
add 100 and it said I can only add 1. Last one! Who's going to get it?
I'm tempted to run it backwards, with the low tombstone in front, so I can
use the two underside tabs to run a pair of custom bent struts to my MIT
Atlantis fork crown, avoiding the diving board part altogether. I don't
know for sure it will work, and I don't have the $250 to run the
experiment, so it looks like I'll miss out on this batch. No doubt by the
end of today they'll be out of stock

[RBW] WTB: Ram or Hilsen fork, 260mm steerer (for resurrection)

2019-12-09 Thread Teague Scott
Hi Riv folks,

I'm trying to resurrect a Sequoia I just came upon. Sure, not a Riv, but
very, very Riv-ish... The original fork is a little tweaked but is likely
alignable; I just don't have any leads on reputable frame benders here in
Boise.

Figured I'd see if anyone has a suitable Riv fork sitting around that
they'd want to pass along for a reasonable price. If not I'll have to ship
it off somewhere to get worked on.

Seems to me like a Ram fork would be an excellent fit. Hilsen would
probably be next best. A Roadini fork wouldn't give me the clearance I'm
looking for.

Thanks!

 Hi All,

Thought some of you would be interested that despite the fact that
internet says you can’t mix shimano Dyna-sys rear derailers with anything
but Dyna-sys shifters I am successfully running them with shimano ultegra
 8
speed bar ends in friction mode. The shifting not only works it works
amazingly well. The longer cable pull allows for finer trimming and a
greater “sweet spot”. Shifting is crisp and direct which I think is the
result of not having that floating pulley. I am running it with and 8
 speed
cassette, 8 speed chain, and a triple front. Hope this information is
helpful. And yes, I can shift across the entire cassette.

 Thanks,

Patrick,

The only reflective areas are the printed logos. TNF on the left front and
back right shoulder, then "apex" on the bottom left sleeve.

Pit to pit: 21.5"
Bottom collar to hem front: 22"
Bottom collar to hem back: 27.5"
Shoulder to shoulder seam: 18.5"
Shoulder seam to cuff: 25.75"

If so, can you tell me the pit-to-pit and bottom-of-collar
seam-to-bottom-of-hem measurements? (I'm sometimes a medium sometimes
a large depending on the maker and cut.)

If it doesn't totally disappear after dark and is big enough, I'm interested.

Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Closet purge! Filson Barbour Woolrich Holubar Rockmount Pendleton Giro Shimano...

2019-12-09 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Cross post on some Rivvish, heritage type leathery wooly waxy cottony
goodness.

The great closet purge of 2019.

Unemployment makes you take stock...wow...I hang on to stuff WAY too long.
Most of these I outgrew or replaced, then just never moved them on.
In hindsight, I've been wearing bobish stuff for quite a while it seems.

For reference, I am 5'9" 155lbs 38r and fall somewhere between smalls and
mediums. See descriptions for fit. I CAN wear them all, but some bigger
than I'd like.

Hit me up for shipping, as these will be all over the board. Will combine,
and bargain on multiples. I'll throw in some ACW swag with each order too!

*SPD Shoes* - These both were worn exactly one time. I have foot issues and
these just did not work. I wear a 9 in almost everything, these fit fine.

GIRO Rumble Size 44 - $45
Shimano SH-MT34B Size 43 - $30

*Shirts:*

Pendleton wool camp shirt Size medium - $20
Some little pinholes here and there. Fits me well, just can't do wool. MUSA

Rockmount Ranchwear short sleeve Size 15.5 - $15
Fits loose small, more like medium. Light material. Cool diamond snaps. MUSA

*Vests:*

Filson Type 8 game vest Size 40 - $50
Had this one for a LOOONG time. Well worn, small holes and stains and
fading. Far too big on me now, but will probably outlast me. MUSA

Triumph thermal vest - Size Medium - $30
Made for under the moto jacket. As new. Too big for me, fits like a 40

*Jackets:*

Filson Tin Cloth Cruiser short jacket Size Small - $200
This actually fits me great, but I have a waxed cotton trucker I prefer.
MUSA

Barbour International A7 trials jacket - Size 38c - $200
These fit pretty baggy. More like a 40. Consequently I replaced it with a
34! and it's my favorite jacket. Made in England

Woolrich Shirt/Jacket? Size Medium - $40
Really nice wool blend, thick heavy material. I used it as an overcoat.
Boxy fit more like large. MUSA

Holubar vintage shell Size Small - $40
WOW. I wore this hiking in the 80s. It's showing some wear on the cuffs,
but still super solid. One of the beefiest zippers I have ever seen. Fits
like a medium. MUSA

Northface shell Size medium - $25
Fine shape. Fits true. Not what I would call a rain jacket, but used it for
light sprinkles while riding. Just too big on me now.

Tourmaster Lawndale leather motorcycle jacket Size XS 38 - $200
As new motorcycle jacket. True to size. Nice 3/4 length. Added shoulder and
elbow armor. Has pocket for back armor.

Vintage Horsehide cafe racer jacket Size 42 - $80
Another oldie. My first moto jacket. Bought new in a honda shop @ 88.
Unbranded. It's well broken in, lots of color fading and mottling. Beefy
zippers. Never crashed.

Gap Field jacket Size S - $30
New. Fits me great, just not my thing. Has a hood in the collar.

[RBW] Re: President and Mrs. Carter's Rivendells

2019-12-09 Thread Christopher Cote
Joey, I'm glad to hear that. I was afraid it might be something like "Yeah,
they had these old, heavy steel bikes with kickstands and paperboy handlebars.
Didn't even have indexed shifting. The new Globes were a huge upgrade. We
played dumpster toss with the old bikes until the frames were unrideable. Took
a long time, though!"

[RBW] Re: President and Mrs. Carter's Rivendells

2019-12-09 Thread Joey Robinson
I heard back from Pete from Outback Bikes. They said that the Carters were
replacing bikes that they kept at the Freedom Park (Carter Center) location
and the Rivendell bikes were kept in Plains, GA.

They also mentioned they've been servicing the Carters bikes in Atlanta for
some time and the Carters generally donate all their old bikes to other
members of the community.

So my plans to acquire and restore these bikes were dashed, but at least
they're in a good place.

As a result if this thread, I just ordered some VP Vice pedals off eBay for
$30, though these JG Bike models look tempting as well.

I rode our December Populaire (100KM) Saturday on my ‘95 Riv Road. One of the
tricks I used to get the weight to 18.5 lbs is these very light pedals from JG
Bike. I really like them. Plenty of weight distribution, good grip without
pointy spikes messing up shoes, and very light. They have a titanium spindle
and thin aluminum platform. And CHEAP too. I want to buy several for my other
bikes but I can’t justify the waste of the pedals already on them. (V-O and
MKS).
