[RBW] Looking for a 700 x 50 commuting tire

2020-03-12 Thread Drw
I don’t remember what the highest level schwalbe marathon is (supreme?) but I
found them quite comfortable in the 700x50 size. Kinda heavy but pretty plush.
Rode them all over the place and never got a flat.

[RBW] Looking for a 700 x 50 commuting tire

2020-03-12 Thread Andrew Turner
Now that spring is around the corner, I'm looking for a tire to run sans
fenders this year.
Currently I'm riding Schwalbe Marathon HS 700x38s and they're wonderful. My
commute involves a lot of that rocky, glass-riddled, junk slurry you find
on the side of the road so the tires still need to have some sort of flat
protection. My current contenders are Soma Cazadero's, Big Bens, and Maxxis
Torch, but I've got a feeling sticking with Schwalbe might be best for the
extra protection...but then that opens Pandora's box of Schwalbe options
which I know nothing of.

If anyone has some recommendations, I'm all ears!

A bit more about my commuting. It's probably 80% well-paved roads but I'll
take the gravel and/or no road shortcuts whenever possible to avoid the
monotony.

Cheers everyone and wash those hands!

- Andrew

The best wide double for an Appaloosa is the Silver wide double. 38/24.
Everything you need. Nothing you don’t. Nobody needs a 46t ring on an Appaloosa
unless they insist on running a 14t smallest cog. If you run an 11-32 or an
11-34 or an 11-36, that 38/24 is perfecto. You can’t pedal at 40mph with a
38x11 it’s true. Enjoy coasting at >35mph.

Very good to hear, maybe this will be my next tire ... for now I've got the
38mm G-one speed tires arriving in the mail today (hopefully). Very helpful
to know (1) the 48mm Shikoro fits and (2) they flat less ... my Snoqualmie
pass tires got too many goathead flats which lead me to get them setup
tubeless, which lead to this tubeless failure from too high pressure and/or
too worn tires. 44mm seemed great size for the Sam, but I'm curious to try
"narrow" 38mm tires again for the first time in several years.

My current setup is the Snoqualmie tires with tubes, I'll wear them down
until May when I'll try the g-one speed tires on my second Century ride
(Santa Rosa Wine Country Century for anyone who might be there too!). I
keep 2 oz of Panaracer Smart Seal tubeless sealant in the tubes for the
goat heads now that I'm not tubeless anymore.

I have a set of resist nomad 700 x 45d in skinwall which came off of my Sam
> Hillborne that I that I would sell. Total dark horse in this category and

I've never heard of these (please PM me a price shipped to Napa, CA). A
quick googling about showed some positive reviews about these significantly
lower price tires ($23 new currently). Though, as you said, not available
in skinwall anymore .. but they are available in all black or *bright red*

What are you paying for your $1500 custom Joe?

I think the asking price is very fair. Seems like a good way to *save*
$1500 on a classic Rivendell to me. The BG cantis alone ran $300+, not to
mention the rest of the build. Lower the saddle and bars (looks a little
goofy that high) and take some nicer photos and I think it would sell.

It's true you lose a lot as soon as you ride it home, but strange that this

Why hasn't it sold (other than it's too expensive for the state it's in)? I
thought the 26 all-rounder is everyone's dream bike.

I asked and it fits 2" tires which sounds perfect.

I'm so tempted to make an offer.

[RBW] Re: Widest wide range double chainring setup? How wide is too wide?

2020-03-12 Thread MAP
Pardon the post resurrection. I think Patrick's "avast, heretic!" comment
alone, back on 3/6/10 justifies it :) I was thinking of this and Google
brought me right back to the RBW group.

For my new Appaloosa I'd like to go 2x over 3x because with 3x creates a
situation where the middle ring can be used as much as 80% of the time and
the small and big are each used as little as 10% of the time. After
wearing out a middle ring this way, I tried to use my big and small rings
more, but then I end up shifting a bunch just to spread the wear across the
3x.

I'd like a 2x for lower speeds and faster speeds. The cassette in the back
helps "fill in the gap."

And 2x over 1x so I don't need a special cassette and also because I think
front/chainring shifts are great when on quick up-and-down transitions,
like on trails.

So instead of a 44/34/24, the best option that I could find for me is the
VO Grand Cru 50.4 BCD crankset.
https://velo-orange.com/collections/cranks/products/grand-cru-50-4bcd-crankset-mkii

It comes as a 46/30 and I'd like to have a smaller small ring. 28T is the
smallest it can fit, and VO informed be I can get it from Peter White Cycles
https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/ta-chainrings.php#pro5

I'll probably first try the 46/30 before spending more money for likely
just a marginal change.

If anyone has chainrings they'd like to swap for 46/30 (I understand I can
change out both big and small rings on this), I'd be happy to go for a 44T
big and/or a 28T small.

And if anyone else has found any better options since this thread was hot a
decade ago, please let me know.

Thanks
-Matt

Haha! I was changing the rear derailleur on a 1st gen Clem last night and had

[RBW] Re: Rear derailler hanger threading issues

2020-03-12 Thread Ian A
Probably worth chasing the hanger through with a tap. Your LBS or co-op will
have the 10mmx1mm tap needed.

Make sure the derailleur is not going to pull out of the threads - it's under
quite a lot of force from the derailleur spring. I had one pull itself out of
what seemed to be compromised but okay threads and launch itself into the back
wheel. Broke the derailleur, bent the hanger and even after rebuilding the
wheel, left a hop in the rear rim.

I used a Problem Solvers "drop out saver" sleeve and it's been fine ever since.
When drilling out the threads, I actually used a round file and made the hole a
fraction undersize to achieve a press fit.

The sleeve is not a perfect solution as it can protrude enough to interfere
with the smallest gear depending on clearance. I had to file the dropout saver
flange a touch on my bike to clear the 9th cog in 130mm OLN spacing (not a Riv).

[RBW] Re: Rear derailler hanger threading issues

2020-03-12 Thread ian m
I don't believe it's cross threaded, at least not all the way through.
Derailler is, or seems to be, flush with hanger. The main problem was the
first quarter to half of the threads, the hanger bolt couldn't get any
purchase on the hanger threads, and as I backed it out about 2 dozen times
there would always be some metal shavings on the hanger bolt. Guess I'll
find out the situation when this derailler bites the dust!

Tom, thanks for the suggestion. Glad to hear something like that exists!

Re: [RBW] Re: Vaughn's custom for sale

2020-03-12 Thread Mark Roland
My understanding is that this is essentially a Susie but with a straight
top tube and some customization. I've heard the "they will sell a ton of
them" before--for instance, with the Legolas. If people are pining for
almost level top tubes and don't like longer stays, there are lots of
companies making that style of bicycle. From what I observe, Rivendell is
not the kind of company that responds to trends, or even caters to what
people think they want. They come from a somewhat different
objective/perspective. Even when you order a custom, the process is
different than working with a custom framebuilder directly, and you are not
guaranteed to get everything you desire.

I think it's important to acknowledge that we are in a serious echo chamber
here on RBW Owners Bunch. On the other hand, what do I know. The bike in
question doesn't have discs or a motor, so maybe folks at Rivendell will
jump on this crowd-sourced business advice. If you think that might be the
case, get our your postcards and start anagramming "Vaughn Custom" !;^)

Look at how fast old Hunqapillars usually sell on the used market.

Two versions of this bike as a production model with Gus/Atlantis/Appaloosa
